In law school, you learn the principles, but it’s not always easy to see how it applies in practice. The transition from the classroom to the profession is much easier with the changes that are being made. Emory is preparing lawyers to practice in today’s world.

I’ve been craving doing more work with clients, and the Federal Defenders program allows me to do that. I like working directly with clients. …To do something that directly impacts someone’s life—there is nothing like it.
My Emory Law training enabled me to hit the ground running. You get the confidence from just being there to jump in and figure things out as you go.
I’m a big proponent of the LWRAP class. It is essentially what lawyers actually do—write motions, briefs, memos… My Criminal Law class is really paying off with the habeas cases. The skills you develop in your first year—legal writing and appellate advocacy—those are really paying off this summer.
T. Brian Green Second-year student From Avondale Estates, Ga. Undergraduate College: Emory College Summer internship with the Federal Defender Program in Atlanta through an EPIC grant
AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION CHARACTER AND FITNESS STANDARD STATEMENTAll applicants must complete an Emory University School of Law application through the Law School Admission Council. Answer each question honestly and completely. Failure to do so may result in the denial or revocation of your admission, suspension or dismissal after matriculation, withdrawal of certification of graduation or revocation of your degree.
If you have been convicted of offenses other than minor traffic violations, you may have difficulty gaining Bar admission. State bar organizations often require that you include your law school application as part of your Bar admission application. Accordingly, your answers in your Emory Law application relating to these matters often will be part of your record. As each state bar has specific admission requirements, you should review the requirements for the state in which you intend to practice.
NONDISCRIMINATION POLICYEmory University does not discriminate in admissions, educational programs, or employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability or veteran/Reserve/National Guard status and prohibits such discrimination by its students, faculty and staff. Students, faculty and staff are assured of participation in University programs and in use of facilities without such discrimination.
The University also complies with all applicable federal and Georgia statutes and regulations prohibiting unlawful discrimination. All members of the student body, faculty and staff are expected to assist in making this policy valid in fact. Inquiries and complaints should be directed to the Equal Opportunity Programs Office, Emory University, Administration Building, Atlanta, GA 30322-0520. Telephone: 404.727.6016 (V/TTY).
SACS ACCREDITATION Emory University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, GA 30033-4097; telephone number 404.679.4501) to award degrees at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels.

Center“Emory Law provides both a first rate legal education and a
practical understanding of how the legal world works. The combination accelerates the ability to develop a meaningful law practice and to become a vital part of the larger community.
You develop strong connections to others in Atlanta. Being from Emory Law opens doors through your common experience with so many Atlanta lawyers, many of whom are judges, political leaders and business leaders. This network can provide a real boost to your ability to build a meaningful reputation.
“Atlanta provides opportunities to do legal work in all areas. You can work at the local TV stations and do legal work. You can work for nonprofits, like Habitat for Humanity. You can work at a large corporation, like Coke, and you also can work at big law firms.
Jason Esteves Second-year student from Orlando, Fla.; Undergraduate College: University of Miami 2009-2010 Student Bar Association President
WHETHER YOU FOLLOW the traditional law school track or take a different path, a degree from Emory Law prepares you for a job and gives you the tools and knowledge to counsel, advise, influence, teach and protect—anywhere.
In addition to an excellent legal education, Emory students have access to the resources of one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas.

A law school professor once told me, if opportunity knocks at your door and you can learn something new from it, you should probably answer. I did that with BET and Paramount, and here I am today. It’s not something I set out to do, but it’s something that I really enjoy.
