a focus on relationships

Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship. this quote by buddha is very appropriate for this issue of Pushing Beyond. the themes of health and relationships are portrayed in every article. Whether you are reading about DeKalb medical’s cancer center that offers top quality care along with a multitude of supportive, personal services, or reading about the commitment of our Foundation volunteers and donors

to support DeKalb medical’s relationship with the commu-nity, it is obvious that building and maintaining strong relationships is a focus for our organization.

relationships also play an important part in our efforts to stay healthy. check out the listing of the primary care physicians who are part

of DeKalb medical’s physician Group. by establishing a relationship with a physician who knows your entire health picture, you improve the likelihood of identifying and treat-ing potential health problems before they negatively affect your life.

as we begin the new year, the employees, physicians and volunteers of DeKalb medical wish you a happy, healthy 2013.

over 500 hearts treated With pci

The joint Commission recently awarded three Gold seals of approval to DeKalb Medical’s long Term acute Care (lTaC) facility in Downtown Decatur in three areas. DeKalb Medical is the only long-term acute care facility in Georgia to hold the certification for treatment of acquired brain injury; one of two facilities in Georgia certified for wound care; and the only hospital in the nation with a Gold seal certification for treatment of patients on ventilators who are diagnosed with respiratory failure. These certifications are based upon outstanding outcomes for patients with complex medical conditions.

in the first 17 months of opera-tion, the DeKalb medical heart and Vascular institute success-fully saved over 500 hearts with percutaneous coronary inter-ventions (pci) services. pci, commonly known as coronary angioplasty and stenting, or simply angioplasty, is a non-surgical procedure used to treat narrowed coronary arteries of the heart that can cause heart attacks.

“We saw a need in our com-munity, so we implemented this pci program and are very proud of how many lives have been saved as a result,” says patrick Green, executive director of heart and Vascular services at DeKalb medical.

before establishing the service in may 2011, patients who came to DeKalb medical in emergent or acute distress

were examined to determine their heart problem, but were subsequently transferred to another facility for a pci. now the institute provides diagnosis and treatment, which has led to much-improved outcomes.

When a patient comes to DeKalb medical with signs of a heart attack, he or she is taken to the cardiac catheterization laboratory where a diagnostic test is conducted to determine the existence and severity of blockages.

pci is far less invasive than open-heart surgery. the procedure is done with wires, stents and balloons through catheters placed in the patients’ arteries—eliminating the need for incisions. pci typically takes an hour and the patient is monitored for 24 to 48 hours before going home.

anxiety … fear … loneliness. These are three words often used by cancer survivors to describe their reactions to the initial diagnosis of cancer. because the staff at DeKalb medical’s cancer center understands the emotional as well as the clinical aspects of cancer treatment, a full range of services is offered to help someone through their cancer treatment and recovery.

services begin with a dedicated group of top-notch physicians and nurses who work as a team to diagnose, develop a treatment plan, manage treatments and provide ongoing support. in addition to quality clinical services, the center offers a navigator service to guide patients through the process and ensure all questions are answered; support groups for patients, families and children; and exercise programs designed for cancer patients. caring for the physical as well as emotional needs of the cancer patient and family members is the goal of the center.

cancer treatment and recovery requires more than just medical care, it requires emotional care as well, points out roushdy-hammady. With her family members in Egypt unable to travel to the United states to be with her, roushdy-hammady relied upon a strong network of friends to help her through her treatment for cancer. however, her family, which includes two sib-lings who are physicians, as well as her out-of-state friends, were grateful that she received the best treatment and benefited from the latest available technology.

“i was fortunate to have so many friends willing to drive me to the center and help care for me,” admits roushdy-hammady. “but i also met many new friends at DeKalb medical’s cancer center.”

individual care plans are a hallmark of the cancer center’s philosophy and a full range of services that address each patient’s diagnostic, treatment and recovery needs are offered. one of the most beneficial services for roushdy- hammady is a personalized navigator service that provides a contact person for each

individual diagnosed with cancer. not only do the navigators help patients get to the right specialist, but they also listen when patients have questions or need to work through a decision that is causing anxiety. “i was able to talk with

the nurse any time to ask questions about treatment or just talk through my anxiety,” she says. “it wasn’t just the nurses who listened either. my doctors would meet with me and take as much time to answer questions as i needed.”

roushdy-hammady’s radiation treatment utilized mammosite® technology, which enables the comple-tion of therapy in five days compared to traditional radiation therapy of six weeks. “the location of my

tumor made it difficult to place the device, but my surgeon would not give up and repositioned the device,” she explains. a commitment to providing the best care and to keep trying was something she noticed in all members of the cancer team, she adds.

although the quality of her medical care has been excellent, the support groups and cancer center-sponsored activities have given roushdy-hammady a chance to learn and experience new

The Women’s Cancer Initiative provides concierge service for women with a symptom or diagnosis of breast or GyN cancers. Made possible by a generous donation from an anonymous donor, the specialized navigator program walks a woman through her cancer journey from the first diagnostic test through treatment.

The navigators meet with women within 24 hours of contact and accompany them to the appropriate specialist, who will work with the primary care physician to put together a team of doctors. This team of experts in their specialty is dedicated to giving each woman the opportunity to achieve the best possible outcome. Throughout the treatment process, women have someone they can call immediately to get any concern they have addressed or obtain information about other cancer center services.

things—such as fly fishing. “i learned about a fly-fishing trip at the hospital,” she says. “the lessons and trip were offered by the Georgia Women Flyfishers organization and it was a lot of fun.”

Care Provided as a TeamJust as roushdy-hammady learned new things about cancer treatment and new hobbies, all cancer patients learn new things related to their cancer diagnosis—often in a language focused on medical terms they never thought they’d use.

although she is a nurse, bobbie Kelly told her doctors and other cancer center staff not to talk to her as a nurse when she underwent breast cancer treatment two years ago. “i’ve been a school nurse for 30 years, so i don’t know what nurses in a hospital know,” she explains. “i wanted everything explained in detail.”

Kelly had no problems getting her answers explained. in fact, she was amazed that before she started treatment, she and her family sat at a table with all three physicians who were providing her care. “my surgeon, my radiation oncologist and my medical oncologist sat with us and talked through the plan,” she says. “With everyone in one place at one time, i knew they were working together as a team.”

in addition to the medical treatment, Kelly

also participated in the support groups and her granddaughter participated in the children’s group. “it’s important that children understand that cancer is not always a bad thing.”

Even though she asked her doctors and nurses not to treat her as a nurse, Kelly says that her nursing training did help her in one very important way. “i recognized the empathy and understanding of everyone in the cancer center and i appreciated the environment they created to help us recover.”

Sharing with Others Creates Hopesupport groups are a key component of the heal-ing environment provided at DeKalb medical. Diane lewis, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2004, learned after her initial surgery that the cancer had spread to her lung and liver. “i did not want to go to a group meeting, but a friend dragged me to my first one,” she admits. “it was during that meeting that i felt hopeful for the first time. i looked around the room, heard everyone’s story and decided that if they could fight cancer, so could i.”

Eight years, three surgeries and many suc-cessful courses of treatment later, lewis still attends the support groups. “You get attached to these people who have listened to your fears, offered advice and been there when you needed

Initiative navigator service, call

them,” she explains. “the support group has given me a place to talk about many fears and concerns with which i did not want to burden my family.”

“people don’t realize how lonely you feel when you have cancer, but the support groups give you a chance to discover that you are not the only one,” says rosalind robinson, a two-time breast cancer survivor. although every patient’s experience with treatment differs, it does help to hear that your side effects are normal for many people or your frustrations are just part of the process, she says.

another non-clinical service that robinson and others have enjoyed is return to Wellness, an exercise program designed to help cancer patients recover from treatment and surgery. the classes also provide another opportunity to talk with cancer patients. “chemotherapy takes so much out of you and exercise helps you rebuild your strength,” she points out. “With each class, i got a little stronger and felt better about myself.”

successBuIlDING oNpatient comfort, convenience and space to grow for the future are the key goals for the renovation of the radiation oncology department at DeKalb medical. located on the ground floor of the 2675 professional office building on the north Decatur campus, the existing radiation oncology suite has served patients for 20 years.

phase i of the 14,000-square-foot renovation will provide a new lobby and waiting area, physician offices, exam rooms, a conference room and a medical library. phase ii of the renovation will enhance the radiation oncology treatment area, providing additional dressing and waiting areas as well as an enhanced work space for employees. both phases of the radiation oncology renovation will be funded by the DeKalb medical Foundation.

throughout the renovation, the radiation treatment room and linear accelerators will remain in use so patient treatment is not affected. the entire project is scheduled for completion by the end of march 2013.

in addition to supporting the radiation oncology renovation, funds raised by the current Foundation campaign, “advancing hope and healing,” also support the expansion of the comprehensive breast center at DeKalb medical at hillandale.

teenagers are often asked what major they want to pursue in college and what they want to do when they graduate. although some young people may have ideas about what they’d like to do, the best way to find out what best fits their goals is to “test-drive” a job.

the teen volunteer program at DeKalb medical gives high school students an opportu-nity to test potential careers, to get experience that might help them get into the college of their choice and to learn what it is like to work in a large organization.

Each year, over 100 applications are reviewed to fill 50 teen volunteer positions for the summer. in 2012, teen volunteers donated 2,335 hours in a wide range of departments, providing valuable assistance to staff members, patients and families.

an interest in a medical career is the reason Kateri Goodwin, a senior at st. pius high school, first volunteered at DeKalb medical three years ago. her first two summers she worked in the outpatient surgery department and the heart and Vascular institute. in 2012, she worked at the patient reception desk at the DeKalb medical

an added benefit to volunteering in a hospital is the opportunity to learn about healthcare career paths not previously considered. a lunch and learn series throughout the summer gives teen volunteers a chance to hear about various careers such as obstetrics/gynecology physician, dietitian, sleep lab technician, physician’s assistant and risk manager, to name a few. “i’ve always thought about pharmacy as a career, but i heard a presentation from a neonatal nurse and found it interesting,” says Goodwin.

What do the numbers mean?

Blood pressure is measured with two num-bers, such as 120 over 80. The top number measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats or when the heart muscle is contracting, and it is referred to as the systolic number. The bottom number mea-sures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats, or when the heart muscle is resting, and is called the diastolic number.

a normal blood pressure, as defined by the american heart association, is less than 120 over less than 80.

more than 40 percent of african-americans have high blood pressure (hbp). not only are they at greater risk to develop hbp than other groups, it also develops earlier in life.*

although higher rates of obesity and diabetes may place african-americans at higher risk of hbp, researchers have also found a gene that may make african-americans more sensitive to salt. in people with this gene, it takes as little as half a teaspoon of salt to raise blood pressure.

“the greatest risk is to have hbp and not know it—over 20 percent of people with hbp are unaware of their condition,” says Kristi Kinsey-Gotier, m.D., a DeKalb medical internal medicine specialist. because this symptomless condition can lead to heart attack, heart disease, stroke and kidney disease, it is important to be aware of your blood pressure and understand when to seek treatment. if you don’t know your blood pressure, see a healthcare professional to be tested.

if you do have high blood pressure, take these steps to control it:n Eat a balanced and healthy diet, which may

include reducing saltn Enjoy regular physical activityn maintain a healthy weightn manage stressn avoid tobacco smoken take medication exactly as the doctor directsn limit alcoholic drinks

“if lifestyle changes alone don’t control your blood pressure, a physician can offer advice on medical treatments that will help,” says Kinsey-Gotier. “Working with a physician to diagnose and develop a long-term treatment plan is the best way to control blood pressure and avoid other complications.”

With each turn of the dial and each choice of a card, you learned something new about your life.

instead, set a major goal or two and then take small steps throughout the year to reach your goal. if your goal is to improve your health, look for exercise classes, nutrition guidance or health education seminars that will help you reach your goal. be ready to land on a space with a challenge, such as “new job doubles workload—

primarY care doctors provide preventive care

it’s a nice feeling when you walk into your local coffee shop and the employees greet you by name or already know what you like to drink. Don’t you want that type of familiar relation-ship with your physician?

Your primary care doctor doesn’t need to know exactly what you drink—unless you need to limit caffeine intake—but having a physician you see regularly can help improve your overall health. a relationship with a primary care physician means having someone else who can watch over your health and recommend health screenings, immunizations and diagnostic tests that can prevent or identify potential illnesses at an early, easily treatable stage. With 34 primary care providers in 12 locations in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties, the primary care physicians included in the DeKalb medical physicians Group are focused on providing patients with an exceptional patient-physician relationship. For more information about primary care physicians in the DeKalb medical physician Group, go to www.dekalbmedical.org or call 404.501.WELL (9355).

emploYees plaY keY role in foundation

seven years ago, Monique Perry sat in a room with other new DeKalb Medical employee partners to listen to a presentation about the DeKalb Medical foundation. “I was impressed by the multitude of things the foundation supports and I immediately signed up to donate,” says Perry, a management system data engineer in the quality department of the hospital system.

Today, Perry not only continues her contributions to the foundation through PEaCh, the employee-giving program, but she chairs the PEaCh Committee and, thus, sits on the foundation Board of Trustees. additionally, she chairs the Grants allocation Task force that determines how PEaCh funds will be distributed each year, and serves on the planning committee for the Charles B. Eberhart Memorial Golf Classic.

The concept of giving also influences her master’s thesis. “I’m always baffled when employees don’t choose to give, especially when their gifts are used to provide services to our employees, patients and community; and they are tax deductible,” says Perry. “The economy makes it tough on everyone. My goal is to evaluate our employee giving

program and identify opportunities for making improvements.”Even with a difficult economy, almost 60 percent of DeKalb Medical employees support the foundation

with donations—raising over $170,000 in the last fiscal year. When asked why she gives so much of her time, above and beyond the time required for her job, Perry answers, “This is more than just a place to work. We are like a family, taking care of people throughout our community, and every little bit helps.”
