DEMONSTRATION ROUTE AND VALIDATION Dimitri Margaritis, CERTH/HIT
Andrea Condotta, Codognotto group
optiTruck conference, 2 July 2019, Brussels
optiTruck is co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No 713788
WP7 Evaluation and Impact Assessment
WP7 aimed / aims to:
• develop the demonstration and evaluation plan and the
corresponding tools
• perform the optiTruck demonstration validation and impact
assessment
• develop the business and technology roll-out
2 July 2019 optiTruck conference, Brussels 2
Validation Objectives
• Development of a common Methodology and Evaluation Plan in
order to set-up an evaluation framework for the testing procedures
based on existing methodologies
• To test in a concise and inclusive way all project developments,
through the use of common and appropriate subjective and
objective evaluation tools
• To iteratively test and optimise functionalities, HMI concepts,
algorithms through simulation and real-life tests
• To verify the system functionality, usefulness, usability and
estimate its impact to environment, economy society and vehicle
technology sector 2 July 2019 optiTruck conference, Brussels
Evaluation framework
• Common framework for the evaluation of all pilots
– Considered existing guidelines and methodological
procedures from other projects (e.g. CONVERGE)
– Specified criteria and performance indicators
– Set assessment and evaluation tools
– Designed test scenarios to cover all aspects of the project
2 July 2019 optiTruck conference, Brussels
Key performance Indicators (KPI)
Vehicle Performance
• KPI-1V: Fuel consumption (lt/km*ton)
• KPI-2V: Urea consumption (% of fuel consumed)
• KPI-3V: Powertrain maintenance (number of times the vehicle stops for powertrain maintenance)
Network deterioration
• KPI-1N: Travel time (hours)
• KPI-2N: Average vehicle speed (km/h)
Impact to environment
• KPI-1E: CO2 emissions (g/km or g/kWh)
• KPI-2E: NOx emissions (g/km or g/kWh)
Driver related and fleet manager related
• KPI-1D: Compatibility with driving tasks
• KPI-2D: Perceived effectiveness
• KPI-3D: Perceived efficiency
• KPI-4D: Mental Workload

optiTruck evaluation criteria The optiTruck evaluation criteria is based on the assessment of different
transport missions:
• National transport missions
• an International transport mission
where we compare a set of relevant indicators between a baseline truck (the
“reference case”) and an optiTruck truck (the “candidate application”).
The goal of the optiTruck evaluation is to assess the success of the optiTruck
global optimizer, i.e. to verify that the system has reached the expected
impact (20% fuel consumption).
Two approaches to evaluation will be performed:
• one based on KPIs monitoring
• one based on the evaluation of fuel consumption savings related to
Innovation Elements. 7 2 July 2019 optiTruck conference, Brussels
Matching Use Cases with evaluation
scenarios optiTruck has defined ten Use Cases (UC):
• UC01: Create new transport mission
• UC02: On-board data collection
• UC03: Cloud system data collection
• UC04: Calculation and planning of the best
route options
• UC05: Detection of deviations from the initial
plan and detection of best route related
deviations
• UC06: Cloud optimization
• UC07: On-board optimization
• UC08: Support the driver in real-time
• UC09: Measure and evaluate transport
mission performances in terms of
consumption efficiency
• UC10: Post-mission data collection for
knowledge-based mission enrichment
8
In line with the Use Cases, optiTruck has
highlighted two types of cases that allow the
optiTruck system to stress most innovation
elements.
Each case addresses a different assessment goal.
• Case 1: Assessment of the optiTruck system in
case of deviations from the initial plan, due
to external event (traffic or weather);
• Case 2: Assessment of the optiTruck system in
different road segments, corresponding to
different geographical road features
(curvature, inclination, etc).
2 July 2019 optiTruck conference, Brussels
Case 1 – Assessment of the optiTruck system in
case of deviations from the initial plan, due to
external event (traffic, weather)
9
The transport mission starts. The driver is informed by the HMI of a set of predicted travel information
Nothing happens
Comparison between sensor data and predicted data: they
correspond
Comparison between external data and data already
collected in the cloud system: they correspond
The Transport Mission proceeds as planned
Deviations are detected by the vehicle through sensors
(unexpected event - e.g. strong wind - on the road in point
X)
Comparison between sensor data and predicted data: they
deviate
Truck operational data and external environment data are
integrated
The Cloud optimizer provides the optimised speed profile
The driver is informed of the suggested new optimal speed
profile and follows the suggested changes.
Deviations are detected by the cloud system (traffic on the
road in point X)
Comparison between actual cloud data and predicted data:
they deviate
Truck operational data and external environment data are
integrated
The Cloud optimizer provides the new optimised route and
the optimised speed profile
The driver is informed of the suggested new optimal speed
profile and follows the suggested changes.
optiTruck Scenario
2 July 2019 optiTruck conference, Brussels
Case 2 – Assessment of the optiTruck system in
different road segments, corresponding to
different geographical road features
10
During the transport mission, the system performances may differ based on the different road conditions
The truck has started the transport mission: the driver receives from the HMI information related to the best
route and optimal velocity profile.
Estimation of power demand for route
Prediction of engine operating points
Estimation of emissions for specific time horizon
Optimisation of auxiliary power consumption
The on board optimisers checks the effectiveness and consistency of each function
The determination of the NOx/CO2 trade-off provides a result for all parameters. CO2 is calculated.
The on board optimization optimises fuel consumption
The driver decides to use the predictive cruise control
Different scenarios correspond to different travel
environments

optiTruck Scenario
Evaluation methodology
11 2 July 2019 optiTruck conference, Brussels
• It is not possible to define a priori which situations will occur during the real-life demonstration phase of the project and the number of demonstrations is limited
• To overcome this barrier, after the real-life demonstrations, a selection of road segments will be done in order to assess mission data related to specific scenarios
• To assess the above-mentioned cases the optiTruck project will rely on the real-life data collected during the demonstration phase and it will isolate data related to those segments where these cases occurred with a greater emphasis
• The goal is to evaluate in which situations the optiTruck system has provided a greater impact on the fuel economy

National demonstration The optiTruck demonstration
that will occur in a National
environment takes into
account the location of a
realistic National transport
mission in Turkey.
The demonstration site will
consist in the route from:
• Point A: Sancaktepe
• Point B: Gölcük
• Point C: İnönü
The average distance
between Sancaktepe and
Gölcük is 90KM and from
Gölcük to İnönü is 160 KM-
200KM.
