Scripture readings for the 11th Sunday a er Pentecost

July 31, 2016, are:

Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12‐14; 2:18‐23

The teacher of wisdom who wrote Ecclesiastes sees that working for mere accumula on of

wealth turns life into an empty game, a “vanity of vani es.” Nevertheless, he asserts in the next verse, it is good to find enjoyment in one’s work

because such enjoyment is a gi from God.

Colossians 3:1‐11

Life in Christ includes a radical reorienta on of our values. Just as the newly bap zed shed their old clothes in order to put on new garments, so Chris ans are called to let go of greed and take

hold of a life shaped by God’s love in Christ.

Luke 12:13‐21

In God’s reign, the “rich will be sent away empty.” Jesus uses a parable to warn against

iden fying the worth of one’s life with the value of one’s possessions rather than one’s

rela onship with God.

What would like to do?

Here’s an idea! Make a positive impact on

the Sunday experience of all who enter here!

Enter laughing!

Upon entering a North Carolina church, a re red pastor from Arizona

approached an older couple serving as greeters. Observing their beaming countenance,

the minister eagerly shook hands and said playfully, “I want you to know that I came all the way from Phoenix

just to shake your hands.”

The cheerful husband laughed and said jovially, “Well, now you can go back.”

Everyone nearby, overhearing the repartee, laughed at the merry dialogue.

The Arizonan entered the sanctuary giggling to himself.

The service seemed especially upli ing that Sunday, because he entered the church with a joyful heart.
