Sunday’s Scripture Segments

Scripture readings for Sunday, August 30, 2015

The Fourteenth Sunday a er Pentecost:

Deuteronomy 4:1‐2, 6‐9 The Israelites believed the law was a divine gi that provided

guidelines for living out the covenant. Moses commands

the people to obey the law and neither to add to nor subtract from it. The Israelites are also

to teach the law to their children and their children’s

children.

James 1:17‐27 The le er of James was

intended to provide first‐century Chris ans with

instruc on in godly behavior. Here, Chris ans are

encouraged to listen carefully and to act on what they hear, especially by caring for those

least able to care for themselves.

Mark 7:1‐8, 14‐15, 21‐23 Mark’s gospel depicts Jesus as challenging tradi onal ways in

which religious people determine what is pure or

impure. For Jesus, the observance of religious

prac ces cannot become a subs tute for godly words or

deeds that spring from a faithful heart.

Sermon Title:

“It is not a pre y picture.”

Pastor Dave Daugs

The Drama c Challenge of Mark’s Gospel.

Mark’s is the shortest of the gospels and probably the first to have been wri en down. Recent evidence suggests that it was originally intended as a script for drama c, oral, live

performance. We now have a wonderful one‐man drama c presenta on of this whole gospel by award‐winning actor Max McLean, who brings Mark to life with electrifying

energy, giving us a sense of what its first hearers might have experienced. (Anyone interested in having a quick look can simply search his name on YouTube.)

In this series, led by Dr. Kurt Queller, we’ll use McLean’s performance as a springboard for inves ga ng this amazing text as a single, self‐contained, coherent narra ve.

Our focus will be on the many fascina ng ways in which Mark’s drama c storytelling teases us and challenges us.

Join us! 8:30 AM, in the Fellowship Hall.

Emmanuel’s Communica on Modes are Many!

Servants at ELC try very hard to communicate to our members, Moscow, Idaho, and beyond, of all our ac vi es that are held in support of our mission and ministries here. There is a “flavor” for EVERYONE! Digitally communicated via our website with URLs and QR codes (See an explana on below ) Posted on our Facebook page Weekly Newsle ers which are posted on our website, mailed, or emailed per your requested

preference Personal announcements on Sunday’s at worship Posters, flyers, and bulle n board displays around the church building Adver sements in the newspaper Personal telephone calls

in any way to get you connected to the communica on style

What Are All These Boxes About? These crazy boxes are a mode of communica on my

friend! I consider myself a savvy, in the now, hip kinda gal… but I had to look up

what a QR code and a URL actually was. Here is what I found on Wikipedia,

(the “Encyclopedia on the internet):

A uniform resource locator (abbreviated URL; also known as a web address, par cularly when used with HTTP) is a specific character string that cons tutes a

reference to a resource. Most web browsers display the URL of a web page

above the page in an address bar. A typical URL might look like:

h p://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of

two‐dimensional barcode (the crazy boxes). Originally designed for industrial uses, QR codes have become

common in consumer adver sing. Typically, a smartphone is used as a QR code scanner, displaying the code and conver ng it to some useful form (such

as a standard URL for a website, thereby obvia ng the need for a user to type it into a web browser). The QR code has become a focus of adver sing strategy, since

it provides a way to access a brand's website more quickly than by manually entering a URL.

What would like to do?

Here’s an idea! Make a posi ve impact on the Sunday experience of all who enter here!

In Scripture, many great encounters between people and God happen around food.

Abraham and Sarah prepare a meal for three guests who turn out to be angels (Genesis 18). God instructs the Hebrew slaves to eat a special meal together before their delivery

from Egypt (Exodus 12); every year since, Jews have celebrated the Passover feast. Elijah is strengthened with food served by an angel (1 Kings 19). Jesus shares meals not only with religious leaders but with “sinners” (e.g., Ma hew 9). Jesus’ Last Supper with

his disciples before his death has become one of the church’s sacraments and a “foretaste” of the heavenly banquet to come.

When Chris an families eat together, it’s a holy me in God’s presence, just as when the church shares Holy Communion — a true fellowship dinner!

Each Emmanuel family helps out with Sunday Morning Fellowship Privileges on a rota ng basis once every few months. A le er with the schedule and

instruc ons is sent to each family as well as a reminder postcard sent a few days before your scheduled Sunday.

If you have not been asked to serve yet, or if you had previously asked to be removed from the rota on but would like to again serve, please let us know.
