Interim Pastor’s Letter

Dear Christian Friends at Emmanuel,

Since last February Emmanuel has made important progress toward redeveloping its mission. The

interim work we have done was aimed at rediscovering what unique, merciful, and charitable mission

God has called us as a congregation to do with our surrounding community.

Since last year, Emmanuel’s Transition Team and Church Council have discerned that we are called to

explore serious support for serving those with intellectual disabilities. We are currently working on

developing a full partnership with Peaceful Living Ministries, a religious, nonprofit based in Franconia.

We have for the last twelve years served the intellectually disabled community by providing the

“Rejoicing Spirits” worship service at Emmanuel. Now we are taking a bigger step into ministry with

that community. The next year of ministry will be focused on building our partnership with Peaceful

Living by providing building space for their administrative offices, an ART Program and Community

Living Space in our parsonage.

This step into partnership is to engage our members in ministry, to focus our ministry and grow the

church numerically. Emmanuel now has a ministry focus and purpose for being the church.

All this work will require a Pastoral Leader. Since last February, we have completed a “Congregational

Profile” or description of Emmanuel Church for prospective pastoral candidates. We have identified a

“Call Committee “chair and “Call Committee”.

The church council has recently met with the bishop’s assistants to discuss the process of calling a new

pastor. Emmanuel is on the way to a new pastor.

Indeed, since last February, our congregation has experienced a renewed sense of purpose, increases in

worship attendance, revenue increases, a new confirmation class, and new staff and recovered a

forward momentum. We hope this will be a positive environment for a new pastor to begin a long term

ministry.

In April, as we prepare for calling the new pastor, I will return to part time ministry. I will focus as

always on visiting our members, and the creation of a new partnership with Peaceful Living, serving

the intellectually disabled.

God bless you and keep you.

Pastor Guiser

The Legend of Four Leaf Clovers

The four leaf clover is one of the most common

good luck symbols of the Western world. The four

leaves represent hope, faith, love and luck. This is

the most shared belief. Some say the four leaves

represent fame, wealth, love and health. All agree

that the four leaf clover is one of the most

auspicious good luck symbols around. Chances of

discovering a four leaf clover are 1:10,000. For

that reason alone we see it is lucky indeed.

Christian Legend

A Christian legend tells the story that Eve brought

a four leaf clover with her when she was expelled

from Paradise. Anyone lucky enough to be in

possession of four leaf clovers has consequently a

piece of the blessed Paradise. Four is considered a

masculine number. Four is also the number of the

cross. Taking into account how rare the four leaf

clover is, many Christians seemed to favor the

four leaf clover to the shamrock with three leaves.

St. Patrick was believed to use the Shamrock and

it’s three leaves to represent the Holy Trinity.

See the Fairies

A common belief during the Middle Ages was

that a person who carried the rare four leaf clover

would have the ability to see fairies. The bearer

could also recognize witches and potential evil

spirits lurking about. The clover in this conviction

does not seem to serve those faint of heart, but

certainly served as a precaution against all threats

they believed to be very real. This was believed to

be a true protection against the evil eye.

Four leaf clovers have been considered lucky for

centuries. This is a very old superstition.
