showed a true maturity to her classmates. We will miss her every day and can’t help but think that our school is missing something without her. We extend our love, support and sympathy to Emma’s parents, brothers and extended family and although we feel our loss as a huge void we cannot imagine the desperate hole in the Medway family at this hard time. Yass P&C has organised a collection box near my office for any financial contributions to support the Medway family. I will also notify the Yass P.S community as to funeral details as they are known,. Please let me know if parents are concerned about their children as there is counselling support available if needed. Kind regards Michelle Fahey Principal

P&C have organised a donation box in the foyer of the admin block if Yass families and community members want to support the Medway family as they struggle through this very difficult time. Kinder Orientation. Thank you to all parents who visited our school last Wednesday for the Information Session. It was a lovely morning to meet new parents. Thanks to all Year 5 students who helped to make the morning such a success. Please pass the word around for any new Kinder parents to drop in and get a pack for enrolments. Gate Pick up. Parents are advised that they are required to meet their children at the back gate or front gate so that teachers know a responsible adult is picking them up and escorting them through a very busy car park with buses leaving.

Beautiful manners, a great role model to other students, tries very hard and never gives up with his learning. Beautiful smile that we see often.

Liana Deery Liana is a wonderful new addition to our Yass

Public family. She has beautiful manners and a sunny smile. She is very helpful and works

hard in class.

School Disco On Wednesday 19 August we had a very successful and enjoyable school disco to raise money for our choir girls who are performing in School Spectacular in November. We had a great attendance from our students for both the Infants and Primary sessions and they enjoyed their Meal Deal. Thank you to the girls who organised games, Brianna Vitler for being DJ, the parents who helped in the canteen, the teachers’ supervision and Mrs Curtis for labelling the dinner bags. While costs are not yet finalised, we will have raised over $900, which is a wonderful effort. Ann Waterhouse & Di Hickey

Public Speaking Grand Final On Monday 24 August Zoe Wright spoke in the Grand Final of the A.C.T. Rostrum Public Speaking competition at Radford College. Zoe was one of 8 finalists, in which 80 schools from Canberra and surrounding districts competed. Zoe spoke confidently on ‘The Importance of Pets’, delivering her speech without notes. While she was unplaced, her family and our whole school community are very proud of her amazing effort. Ann Waterhouse

Pyjama and Cupcake Day

On Tuesday the SRC held their Pyjama and Cupcake Day to raise money for a children’s orphanage in Thailand. The day proved to be a huge success with $797.00 being raised. Next Friday we will be having a visit from a lady who works at the orphanage. She will provide us with further information about the orphanage and will also tell us which project the money we raised will go towards. Thank you to those who brought in cupcakes to sell and those who participated in the day by wearing their pyjamas and purchasing a cupcake.

Book Week Parade. Wow what a great turnout of costumes to celebrate book week parade. Thanks to so many parents for coming as well to cheer families on. Many children received prizes for picking the short listed books or getting dressed up. Thanks to Mrs Bradley for her organisation of a great afternoon. The best costumes in my book were Josh “Wild thing” Banfield and Darcy “Grinch” Worthy.

Tree Planting Day 2015 There was a very exciting build up to Tree Planting Day this year at Yass Public School. We decided to make it an even more memorable experience by combining it with making a lasting memorial for Year 6. After discussion, a mosaic paver was planned as it could be displayed outside in the weather and last for a long time. Year 6 students who wished to be involved in the process met with me to plan the design and almost thirty year 6 students provided input. They decided that they wished it to look like a chalkboard in a simple black and white monochrome palette stating “Year 6 Was Here” and we added some extra bling with mirror for the writing of the year 2015. The students had a lot of fun smashing up the tiles, mixing grout and creating the paver. They did a fantastic job and I am sure we have a lot of mini-mosaic artists in the making! Well done Year Six – the finished result is a very special art piece to commemorate the planting of our Chinese Elm. Ms Marple

Regional Athletics Carnival. On Friday 21st August I travelled to Canberra to Support our District’s up and coming stars. In total, there were approximately 70 students from Gunning. Dalton, Wee Jasper, Bowning, Berinba and of course Yass Public. The day started with the 800m races which proved to be an amazing group of races. Emma Medway starred coming 5th in her 11yr old race, Chrissie Davis also ran a beautiful race coming in 10th in the senior girls. In the 11yr boys we had Will Fahey do us proud in his race as well. The day continued with students producing an outstanding effort and participating in wonderful sportsmanship behaviour. Olivia McHugh had a fantastic day narrowly missing the finals. She ran in a 2nd and 3rd in two of her race heats but missed out on the finals. I was extremely proud of all the students who came on the day. We cheered each other on and produced some great results. Thank you all for attending the day and showing pride in both your school and in your district. I would also like to thank the parents who took the time to take their children and watch them in their events.

Chess Club. The Yass chess Teams A & B competed in a competition at Goulburn Public School. The students played using skills and strategies refined during weekly chess rounds. All 8 students played fairly and were well matched to their opponents. We lost by 2 and a half points only but we felt like winners. The games were exciting and Mrs Barton was biting her nails. Congratulations to Team A Team B Selena W Caleb S Ruby M Mark B James G Malakai V Jasper P Leo K Cameron B
