Growing up, I always had a difficult time with school. As much as I’ve always had an appreciation for learning new things and expanding my mind, the way I seem to absorb knowledge did not mend well with the traditional styles taught in American schools. My mind practically refused to wrap itself around concepts taught to me via lectures, testing, and “shoving my nose into a book”. In fact, the only times I ever really picked up on a subject and was able to fully immerse myself in it was when I was engaging not only my mind, but my hands and eyes and even soul. The most obvious subjects I exceled at for that reason was anything and everything art related. I could play instruments. I could perform dance on a stage in front of a huge crowd of people. I took a sculpture class my sophomore year of high school and having never dealt with free form clay prior, I was able to pick up a large mass of clay and with little guidance, sculpt it into a beautiful, tribal inspired giraffe. If I was given a blank canvas and a paintbrush and just told, “go with it!”, that’s exactly what I would do. It was almost as if my hand and the paintbrush (and really any drawing utensil I’d put between my fingers) had a previous, long-lasting relationship, and they just worked together seamlessly with my mind. I come from a family of artists, so it wasn’t a huge surprise that my natural talents were swayed completely artistically. I was never bothered by the fact that I couldn’t do math to save my life or was always one of the last ones to complete a test…if even completing one fully at all. I was and always will be fully content that my only God given talent was to create works of art. Whether through writing, fine arts, performing arts, photography…really anything creative. It’s what I live for. I hope that by furthering my art education and fine-tuning my skillsets, I can finally possess what it takes to become a published author with my children’s books and other books.

In Conclusion…

Page 22: Emily Schafer RMCAD Portfolio Submission

To see the world. Things dangerous to come to. To see behind walls. To draw closer. To find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life.-The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

I believe God created us to create beauty in his honor, just as he created the beauty we surround ourselves with on this earth. At least for me. I have never stopped expanding my desire to create and never will. I shall reach to all ends of the earth to be inspired and to inspire. I want my art to live on for eons after I am gone. There’s not one doubt in my mind that I was put here to create beautiful things. And that’s exactly what I will do. – Emily Tyson Schafer
