Led community engagement efforts to develop the Kansas City No Violence Alliance (NoVA) partnership with seven neighborhoods along Prospect Avenue, one of Kansas City’s highest violent crime corridors. Designed and conducted process to develop the Community Vision for Safety.

• Guided NoVA partners through process to prioritize and refine program and goals for community partnership to design process for engagement and implementation efforts

• Hosted strategic meetings with Neighborhood Association leaders to design and mobilize resident involvement in a community workshop with neighborhood residents, advised development of the Community Response Team, currently guiding implementation efforts

• Mentored intern (academic focus: environmental design to promote safety for african american women) to conduct research, facilitate engagement and design plan documents

• Strategies to address vacant properties/lots, microeconomic resilience, and beautification emerged as priorities.

• With the Community Vision for Safety in place, NoVA was awarded a $1M grant from the Byrne Criminal Justice initiative and hired staff to guide neighborhoods and NoVA partners through the ongoing problem solving process that builds neighborhood leadership accountability through capacity building and conflict mediation tools such as neighborhood accountability boards

Director of Affliate Program 2007 - 2010KEEP KANSAS CITY BEAUTIFUL | BRIDGING THE GAP

• Sustainable beautification- designed and managed multiple programs that engaged neighborhood leaders in the planning, installation, and maintenance of gateway gardens, rain gardens, and community gardens to manage stormwater and increase healthy food access.

• Prairies on Prospect- collaborative design and implementation of restorative justice program, in which individuals assigned community service planted and maintained native gardens at five intersections along Prospect corridor where loitering and crime are chronic issues.

• Benton Boulevard beautification project- organized a coalition of residents, property owners, churches, neighborhood associations, university resources, City resources, and volunteers to identify and map target areas for beautification, obtain funds, and manag volunteers to plant and maintain gardens along a 6 mile corridor, leading to community project such as the Benton Community Garden

• Partnered with Operation Breakthrough, a single-site early education child care and social services facility serving over 400 children in Kansas City’s urban core to design and install an outdoor classroom, a natural oasis for play and education adjacent to the main facility

• Brush Creek Community Rain Garden- worked with Kansas City Art Institute, Sprint, and volunteers to develop ongoing maintenance program for the Brush Creek Community Rain garden

• Increased KKCB budget during the 2008 recession. Organized a city-wide neighborhood based campaing in which neighbors in every Council district attended public budget hearings to demonstrate their commitment to partnership with KKCB and to cleaning and beautifying their own neighborhoods/ The City increased KKCB’s

annual funding contract during severe budget contractions as a solution to support resident-driven maintenance while city services were limited

• Led Keep Kansas City Beautiful Board of Directors and staff through 2009-10 organizational transition, providing mediation and strategic planning during a highly conflictual leadership transition for the parent nonprofit organization, Bridging The Gap

• In partnership with national affiliate Keep America Beautiful, conducted research and site visits to adapt the Philadelphia LandCare program for local use. The program is a partnership between City government, the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, neighborhoods, and community organizations. It provides employment for more than 100 prior criminal offenders and at risk youth to maintain more than 8,000 vacant lots in the City as an interim strategy for neighborhood redevelopment. Engaged Kansas City community partners in conversations that influenced development the Kansas City Land Bank program.

• Designed and developed the currently operating WaterWorks! Program for parent organization Bridging The Gap, a water conservation and education program that engages residents and businesses in stormwater management and water conservation on private property

Much of my understanding of what creates a thriving neighborhood is grounded in my working relationships with the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council. Through programs; community organizing, advocacy and education; in study and in practice; through participatory observation and as a community partner; and through my work at KKCB, GKC Food Policy Coalition, KU Urban Planning, KC Food Hub Working Group, BNIM, and the No Violence Alliance, I worked in partnership with the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council to empower community residents and build neighborhood capacity through litter cleanup, beautification, urban agriculture, community organizing, job training, microeconomic development, social justice, and community partnership.

2007 - 2014IVANHOE NEIGHBORHOODCommunity Partner

• Collaborative design and implementation of a deep community engagement strategy, guiding five neighborhoods in the development of integrated solutions that address arts and social services, healthy food access, mobility, vacant lot reuse and redevelopment, commercial redevelopment, and redevelopment of the recently closed elementary school

• Worked with the Marlborough Community Coalition (MCC) to design solutions for increased leadership and administrative capacity for the Community Coalition, leading to significant progress on multiple plan initiatives within two years. Galvanized residents and stakeholders throughout the 19-county eco-region in a long-term implementation strategy for coordinating regional efforts, supporting the home of Fort Riley, Kansas State University, and the last remaining stand of Tallgrass Prairie in the nation.
