Statement of Interest Saiki Design and Emily Belknap are teaming for this fascinating opportunity to enrich Pennsylvania Park and the Emerson East Neighborhood. We feel our team has the creativity, technical expertise and experience, and a proven track record of accomplishment to advance the concepts and objectives of the assignment, within the community and neighborhood framework. This commission presents a challenge that marries site design and art, for which we feel our team is uniquely qualified to explore. Saiki Design has been an advocate and ally of public art in the Madison community, and has assisted numerous public artists by creating sites and substrates for their installations. Emily Belknap’s studio work crosses a broad range of media and techniques. As a sculptor, Belknap’s process involves a combination of drawing, writing, casting and constructing. Her sculptural work explores the relationship between urban, suburban, and rural landscapes as well as the divisions within these places. Transitional zones have been the subject of Belknap’s work for the past ten years. She brings this understanding of land in transition to Pennsylvania Park, a commuter pathway. Our project manager for this endeavor, Julia Schilling, has one foot firmly planting in both disciplines, landscape architect and artist. Julia’s design for “Shift,” a backlit art installation for an underpass, has been an ongoing collaborative neighborhood initiative between the Regent Neighborhood, UW Madison Environmental Design Center, and 1000 Friends of Wisconsin. Julia and Emily have a history of collaboration as students at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design as well as cofounders of the White Whale Artist Collective in Milwaukee, where they managed the gallery while also participating in numerous shows together. Our team has a unique perspective on land and art. Emily Belknap’s work is devoted to landscape themes. Saiki design seeks artful execution in landscape and site design and its implementation. We meet at that intersection. We are intrigued and excited about what our collaboration together, and with the neighborhood will yield, and hopefully you will be too.

Statement of Interest

Saiki Design and Emily Belknap are teaming for this fascinating opportunity to enrich

Pennsylvania Park and the Emerson East Neighborhood. We feel our team has the

creativity, technical expertise and experience, and a proven track record of

accomplishment to advance the concepts and objectives of the assignment, within the

community and neighborhood framework.

This commission presents a challenge that marries site design and art, for which we feel

our team is uniquely qualified to explore. Saiki Design has been an advocate and ally of

public art in the Madison community, and has assisted numerous public artists by

creating sites and substrates for their installations.

Emily Belknap’s studio work crosses a broad range of media and techniques. As a

sculptor, Belknap’s process involves a combination of drawing, writing, casting and

constructing. Her sculptural work explores the relationship between urban, suburban,

and rural landscapes as well as the divisions within these places. Transitional zones

have been the subject of Belknap’s work for the past ten years. She brings this

understanding of land in transition to Pennsylvania Park, a commuter pathway.

Our project manager for this endeavor, Julia Schilling, has one foot firmly planting in

both disciplines, landscape architect and artist. Julia’s design for “Shift,” a backlit art

installation for an underpass, has been an ongoing collaborative neighborhood initiative

between the Regent Neighborhood, UW Madison Environmental Design Center, and

1000 Friends of Wisconsin. Julia and Emily have a history of collaboration as students

at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design as well as cofounders of the White Whale

Artist Collective in Milwaukee, where they managed the gallery while also participating

in numerous shows together.

Our team has a unique perspective on land and art. Emily Belknap’s work is devoted to

landscape themes. Saiki design seeks artful execution in landscape and site design and

its implementation. We meet at that intersection. We are intrigued and excited about

what our collaboration together, and with the neighborhood will yield, and hopefully you

will be too.
