Making LinksJames Kirkpatrick,Director of Funding andCommunity Engagement

Over the lastmonth I seemto have

attended anextremely highnumber ofmeetings andevents, runninginto somefamiliar facesand plenty ofnew ones.

What this has reminded me of isthe importance of making linksboth with people and projects:

Linking and building relationswith the people in the regionwho do similar work to improvemy understanding of that work

Linking to similar projects/services as mine so that I canlearn from each them, and

    hopefully not copy othersmistakes.

Seems an obvious thing to bereminded of, but when tied to thedesk, it can be something that canslip.

The importance of building linksand relations, and staying incontact with people has also been

raised at almost all of the EMFFevents. During the Economic

Downturn event keeping in touchwith funding advisers anddevelopment officers and partnerorganisations was seen as a highpriority so that the sector knowswhat is happening with fundingsources, and changes to criteriain response to the recession.

During the recent NI7 event, theimportance of communicationwas highlighted again, makingsure that third and public sectorinfrastructure organisationscommunicate effectively withdelivery organisations and alsobuild relationships to improvetheir overall support packagesduring more difficult times.

This was also true at the Fundingand Support Speed Dating event, where a significant number ofnew links were made betweenthose that directly supportdelivery organisations, and thosethat can offer additional supportand funding.

    For funding and support

organisations having these linksis going to become moreimportant as both budgets andcriteria become tighter.

Discussions at the event considered how aware

and engaged organisations were in the NI7

process, and how both Third Sector

    Infrastructure and Funding organisations could

    contribute.

From the discussions it became clear that there

    needed to be improved communication

regarding NI7 (and other key issues and

    policies) between the local authorities,

    infrastructure organisations, and the delivery

    organisations. Making sure that

communication is making its way both up and

    down these organisations.

For those local authority areas that have NI7 as

a target it is going to be important for them to

maintain and build relationships with the third

sector, with delegates highlighting the need to

make it about more than just a funding

relationship. If it is just this between a local

authority and a third sector organisation, then

the likelihood of longer-term partnership is

    diminished.

Overall five themes were identified within the

discussions these were Skills, Communication,Representation and Networking, Learning, and

Support. A summary of the discussions are

available from the REM website at:

The network meeting looked at Local Area

Agreement National Indicator 7 (NI7), and how

this is currently understood by funding and

    investment organisations within the region.

NI7 is an indicator created to measure how a

local authority canCreate an Environment for

a Thriving Third Sector. The first measure of this

indicator has been completed by a national

survey, the results off which can be found at:

    Speakers on the day included:

    Kerrie Fletcher from 3D Derbyshire

Consortium. Kerrie provided an overview of NI7

and feedback upon research she carried out into

    Network for Regions

    Funding Advisors

    Regeneration East Midlands has

    begun its Funding Information and

    Advisory Support Programme,

    designed to promote networking and

support for workers from all sectors

who give funding advice as part of their

    role.

Funding advisors are a vital link in the

process of getting funding to where it is

most needed in the East Midlands. Formany voluntary and community groups

    the information and advice available

    through local organisations, both public

and voluntary sector, is the difference

    between success and disappointment.

    Now REM have launched a

    programme to support funding advice

    across the region.

    The Funding Information and Advisory

    Support Programme focuses strongly

on networking as a key approach to

helping funding advisors to do their

    work: sharing good practice,

information and ideas, keeping up to

date with whats going on locally and

    across the region, and working

    effectively together as a network.

    Jonny Gutteridge, REMs new Funding

    Advice Network Manager, says, The

idea is to deliver in four areas:

    promoting networking at sub-regional

    and regional levels, helping funding

    advisors develop skills and knowledge,

using a new web service to advertise

    funding advice, and showing how

    Funding Advisor Network contact

For more info please contact network

    manager Jonny Gutteridge at:

    [email protected]

    or 0115 979 2333

First steps for the programme include a

survey of funding advisors to analyse

their learning needs, and work with a

group of funders to establish a common

    understanding of what makes a

    successful application.

The programme will also involve regular

    communications to a region-wide

    mailing list and regional networking

events that compliment networking thatis already happening at county and

    district levels.

The first network meeting for this

programme will be held on 27th

January. Please see the next page for

    further details.

The programme has been supported bythe Big Lottery Fund for 4-years. If you

are interested in becoming part of the

    network or discussing the programme

further get in contact with Jonny

    Gutteridge at the details below.

Wednesday January 27th is the date for a regional networking event for funding advisors, planned to be a

genuine networking experience, with every opportunity to share issues and experience around funding

advice. Key questions expected to be discussed include:

what are the challenges facing funding advisors, and how can training and networking help?

how can we track the impact of advice on the quality and quantity of applications made to funders?

The event is aimed at East Midlands workers, both paid and voluntary, who give funding advice as part of

their job, and will also welcome others who feel they have a stake in the work of the regions funding

    advisors.

If you have an idea about what other issues the event should cover please contact REMs Funding

    Advice Network Manager, Jonny Gutteridge.
