Step 1 : Clarify � Dirty or Cloudy water First must be made Clear. It may be passed

through filter paper, fine cloth, or other filter. It may be allowed to settle and

the clear water on top carefully drawn. (Filtered or clear settled water should

always be disinfected before use)

Step 2 : Disinfect (Killing Microorganisms & Parasite Eggs)

a. Boiling Method - Bringing water to a rolling boil for 3-5 min. will kill most

water-borne microorganisms. However, prolonged boiling of small quantities of

water may concentrate toxic contaminants if present.

b. Bleach - Adding 1/8 teaspoon (8 drops) of fresh liquid household chlorine bleach (5-6% sodium hypochlorite) to every gallon (4 liters) of water will kill

most microorganisms. Only household bleach without thickeners, scents, or

additives should be used. The use of bleach does not address toxic

contamination.

c. Water Purifiers Sold in Stores - These can effectively clarify and disinfect water contaminated with microorganisms, toxic chemicals, and heavy metals.

Their effectiveness depends on design, condition, and proper use.

� One thing that affects the taste of water is it “going flat.” That occurs because of the oxidation that takes place as it sits. You can improve the taste by pouring the water back and fourth between containers to aerate it.

� Remember you also have several sources of water already in your home to be used for an emergency: water heater, water pipes, ice in the freezer, etc. (NOT from toilet bowls & tanks, pools,

water beds and radiators!)

� Water from a chlorinated municipal water supply does not need further treatment when stored in clean, food-grade containers.
