A C R I T I C A L A P P R A I S A L

The 33rd anniversary Emergency Medicine and Acute Care course is a 20-hour, AMA/ACEP/AAFP/AOA-approved Category I/Prescribed/2A (AOA) course jointly sponsored by Emergency Medical Abstracts and the Center for

Emergency Medical Education. The course has been presented over 400 times and has been held throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Chile, London and Paris.

The target audience for this course is physicians, PAs and NPs who practice in emergency departments and who are seeking an evidence-based, literature-focused update in controversial areas of emergency care.

After completing the Emergency Medicine & Acute Care / A Critical Appraisal - 2014 program, participants will be able to:

eDiscuss key points from the literature regarding leading-edge emergency medicine topicseDiscuss literature-based recommendations for practice improvementeEffectively translate the acquired strategies into improved diagnostics and subsequently implement a better treatment plan for their patients

Target Audience / Learning Objectives

Using primarily the Emergency Medical Abstracts (EMA) database of over 17,000 abstracts and focusing on the literature primarily of the last five years, 28 presentations, each of 30-minute duration, are presented along with four 90-minute faculty panels. The topics chosen to be addressed are determined by faculty input and feedback from prior registrants. Using largely a question/answer format, the focus of the course is the new, the controversial and the provocative. The course faculty synthesize the literature and combines it with their clinical experience to provide participants with specific recommendations regarding diagnosis and therapy related to emergency care.

Most of our faculty have been teaching the EMA course for more than 15 years. All are very knowledgeable regarding the literature of emergency medicine and most participate in emergency medicine training programs. They have been chosen because of their broad knowledge and clinical expertise, as well as their energy, enthusiasm and love of emergency medicine. The faculty, combined with the unique, literature-based content, truly make the course an exceptional learning experience – one that over 40,000 physicians have attended in the last 30 years.

Depending on the location, the courses run over four or five days. Typically, five-day courses begin at 7:30am and conclude at noon, while four-day courses generally end at 1:00pm. For selected five-day courses a day off is provided in the middle of the course. At the Vail course lecture times are from 7:30am until 9:30am, and from 4:30pm until 7:00pm daily. On the last day of the course only a morning session is held. Schedules for all the courses are emailed approximately four weeks before the course date. Note: The course manual is picked up on-site.

Panama City, Panama Monday, February 10 – Friday, February 14, 2014

The hotel website is www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/ptypa-panama-marriott-hotel/

We’ve heard so much about Panama, that we had to schedule a course there. The New York Times has selected Panama as “Best in Travel” for 2012. Our host for the course will be the Panama Marriott Hotel. This 20-story, cosmopolitan, 4-star hotel is located in the financial district and, in addition to the amenities you would expect with a Marriott hotel, there is a casino on the premises. Celebrating its 100th birthday, the Panama Canal is a must see. TripAdvisor has a bunch of very positive reviews regarding visiting the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center – it’s rated #2 of 27 other attractions. Check out http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g294480-Activities-Panama_City_Panama_Province.html for the rest of the list.

Key West has been one of our most popular course destinations for decades and it’s easy to see why. The town seems to be “lost in time” and this is what makes it so unique and charming. It is funky, quaint, very friendly and a great place to enjoy the sun and Caribbean blue water. If you’re into fishing you won’t find better. If you’re a walker, there’s lots to see -- Hemingway’s home, the most southern spot in the U.S., the harbor where huge liners berth for the day, and great window shopping on Duval Street. Our host hotel this year will again be the Casa Marina Resort and Beach Club -- the best hotel in the Keys. Located on the largest private beach in Key West, the Casa Marina combines old world charm with every amenity you would expect to find in a world-class hotel. The pool and beach area are unquestionably the best and most inviting on the island and the hotel is only a short walk to many of the major attractions of Key West.

Maui, HI Monday, March 10 – Friday, March 14, 2014

Situated in one of the best locations on Maui, the Wailea Marriott will again host our annual Hawaii course. Based on very successful trips in prior years, we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to return to this extensively updated hotel. The rooms are spacious and beautifully appointed, the amenities are first class, and the hotel features the most incredible infinity edge pool you’ve ever seen. There is a great new water park for the kids and there are plenty of nearby diversions when you get tired of soaking up the sun (aka, serious shopping, great golf courses, fine dining, helicopter tours, exploring and more). The Wailea end of Maui is far more peaceful and tranquil than the much more “touristy” Kaanapali, and is the perfect location for a mid-winter getaway where you can recharge your batteries, take in some serious CME and experience the best that Hawaii has to offer.

Las Vegas, NV Thursday, April 3 – Sunday, April 6, 2014

The hotel website is www.ParisLasVegas.com

Our Las Vegas courses are always among our most well attended - and with all of the recreational opportunities coupled with a solid educational experience, why not? Our host hotel this year is the Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino. With its central location on the Las Vegas “strip” you’ll have easy access to all of the major attractions within a short walk. In addition to the traditional “action” of the casinos, Las Vegas has a large and growing number of world-class restaurants if you’re into fine dining (Bobby Flay’s Mesa, Wolfgang Puck’s Postrio, Picasso, Nobu Matsuhisa, Le Cirque, Alize and Aureole to name a few -- and Gordon Ramsay’s new restaurant, Steak, is now located in the Paris Hotel. Plus, the hotel shows keep getting more and more spectacular - Ka, Mystere and “O” are particularly memorable. Want to experience the Southwestern desert after the course concludes at 1:00 p.m.? Hike the Red Rock Canyon, visit majestic Hoover Dam (it is truly incredible) or take in a round of golf at some of the area’s world-class courses.

We’re back in Scottsdale for 2014. Just in time for Spring training (15 Major League Baseball teams train in the Phoenix area). Scottsdale also has some of the best golf courses in the country. Our host hotel this year will be the Scottsdale Marriott at McDowell Mountains where all of the rooms feature separate living areas. You’ll note that we’ve negotiated some super prime time rates. The hotel is located adjacent to the 36 holes of the Tournament Players Club (TPC) golf course. When not enjoying this wonderful resort, visit Scottsdale’s many attractions including the world-famous Heard Museum of American Indian Culture, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Wing Aviation Museum. Old Town Scottsdale is renowned for artwork, Indian jewelry, great restaurants and it’s just a great place to stroll.

Vail, CO Monday, March 17 – Friday, March 21, 2014

For our 26th course in Vail we’ll again be hosted by one of our favorite venues, the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort & Spa. With regard to accommodations, you won’t find better, and, with close proximity to the ski lifts and Vail Village, you’ll be within easy walking distance to all of the local attractions. A true, world-class ski destination, Vail offers its visitors a spectacular variety of trails to suit everyone’s capabilities as well as its famous “back bowls” where you can cruise for hours in peace and solitude. And, in the event you get tired of the slopes, there is an ice skating rink on which to take a spin, snowmobiling opportunities abound, cross country skiing is great and there are some awesome restaurants and serious shopping available. Bring the family (the Vail ski school is among the best in the world) and friends, and create a memorable experience.

New Orleans, LA Thursday, May 1 – Sunday, May 4, 2014 (Jazz Fest)

The hotel website is www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-deals/msyla-new-orleans-marriott/

Every year we coincide our New Orleans course with its world famous Jazz Fest (NOJazzFest.com) and this year will be no exception. In support of the city, the artists performing at the Jazz Fests since Katrina have been among the world’s best and this year’s Jazz Fest will maintain the tradition. For 2014 our host hotel will once again be the New Orleans Marriott. Right on the edge of the French Quarter on Canal Street, you’ll be in the center of the action. Yet there is easy access to the sites and sounds of the Mississippi river (only a few blocks away) as well our favorite places in the Quarter - the Café du Monde for late night beignets and chicory coffee, the Acme Oyster House, some very serious antique shops, the artists and entertainers at Jackson Square and check out Mina’s right behind the hotel – and ask for the ham hocks. A word to the wise, book your plane tickets early.

San Diego, CA Thursday, April 24 – Sunday, April 27, 2014

The hotel website is www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/sanci-coronado-island-marriott-resort-and-spa

San Diego, filled with the charm of its Spanish settlers, is a vacationer’s paradise. Known as a world-class destination, it’s no wonder they call it “America’s Finest City.” San Diego is a great place to visit no matter what time of year, but certainly, as a Spring getaway, you’ll find few better places in the United States. Our host hotel for the course will again be the Coronado Island Marriott Hotel and Spa, which is located right on San Diego Bay and is only a short distance from San Diego’s world-famous attractions - the Zoo, SeaWorld, Wild Animal Park, the Gaslight district and Old Town. And, with its own water taxi to take you across the bay, you’ll have the convenience of the city just minutes away, yet be able to enjoy the beaches and tranquility of beautiful Coronado Island.

Orlando, FL Wednesday, April 16 – Saturday, April 19, 2014 (Easter Week)

The hotel website is www.marriottworldcenter.com

We’ve been holding courses in Orlando for over 25 years because it is a great location at which to combine a first-rate CME experience with a terrific family Spring break getaway. Our host for many years has been the Marriott World Center. This first class resort has its own golf course on the premises and several huge pools with lots of water features. In short, it has all the amenities you would expect from an Orlando Marriott. As the number of world-class attractions in the Orlando area continues to grow, it is easy to understand why this destination has become an international vacation Mecca. If the kids are out of school (the course concludes the day before Easter), Orlando is a great getaway for the whole family. And if you get tired of the parks, Cape Canaveral has lots to see and isn’t very far away and the quaint, nearby, Disney-built city of Celebration is worth a visit.

San Francisco remains one of the most popular destinations for our courses and we’ve been holding them at the recently updated Fisherman’s Wharf Marriott for many years. You’ll find no better place than San Francisco to renew and nurture relationships and, at the same time, savor the offerings of perhaps the most beautiful city in America. Afternoons are free to explore the rugged coast, the giant redwoods, wine country, tour Alcatraz or do some serious shopping. And, it goes without saying, the restaurants of San Francisco are fantastic – from small bistros to world-class dining, you won’t find better. So bring your walking shoes, friends or family, and enjoy a great course in a great city that is just waiting to be explored.
