The 33rd anniversary Emergency Medicine and Acute Care course is a 20-hour, AMA/ACEP/AAFP/AOA-approved Category I/Prescribed/2A (AOA) course jointly sponsored by Emergency Medical Abstracts and the Center for

Emergency Medical Education. The course has been presented over 400 times and has been held throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Chile, London and Paris.

The target audience for this course is physicians, PAs and NPs who practice in emergency departments and who are seeking an evidence-based, literature-focused update in controversial areas of emergency care.

After completing the Emergency Medicine & Acute Care / A Critical Appraisal - 2014 program, participants will be able to:

eDiscuss key points from the literature regarding leading-edge emergency medicine topicseDiscuss literature-based recommendations for practice improvementeEffectively translate the acquired strategies into improved diagnostics and subsequently implement a better treatment plan for their patients

Target Audience / Learning Objectives

Using primarily the Emergency Medical Abstracts (EMA) database of over 17,000 abstracts and focusing on the literature primarily of the last five years, 28 presentations, each of 30-minute duration, are presented along with four 90-minute faculty panels. The topics chosen to be addressed are determined by faculty input and feedback from prior registrants. Using largely a question/answer format, the focus of the course is the new, the controversial and the provocative. The course faculty synthesize the literature and combines it with their clinical experience to provide participants with specific recommendations regarding diagnosis and therapy related to emergency care.

Most of our faculty have been teaching the EMA course for more than 15 years. All are very knowledgeable regarding the literature of emergency medicine and most participate in emergency medicine training programs. They have been chosen because of their broad knowledge and clinical expertise, as well as their energy, enthusiasm and love of emergency medicine. The faculty, combined with the unique, literature-based content, truly make the course an exceptional learning experience – one that over 40,000 physicians have attended in the last 30 years.

Depending on the location, the courses run over four or five days. Typically, five-day courses begin at 7:30am and conclude at noon, while four-day courses generally end at 1:00pm. For selected five-day courses a day off is provided in the middle of the course. At the Vail course lecture times are from 7:30am until 9:30am, and from 4:30pm until 7:00pm daily. On the last day of the course only a morning session is held. Schedules for all the courses are emailed approximately four weeks before the course date. Note: The course manual is picked up on-site.

We’ve heard so much about Panama, that we had to schedule a course there. The New York Times has selected Panama as “Best in Travel” for 2012. Our host for the course will be the Panama Marriott Hotel. This 20-story, cosmopolitan, 4-star hotel is located in the financial district and, in addition to the amenities you would expect with a Marriott hotel, there is a casino on the premises. Celebrating its 100th birthday, the Panama Canal is a must see. Key West has been one of our most popular course destinations for decades and it’s easy to see why. The town seems to be “lost in time” and this is what makes it so unique and charming. It is funky, quaint, very friendly and a great place to enjoy the sun and Caribbean blue water. If you’re into fishing you won’t find better. If you’re a walker, there’s lots to see -- Hemingway’s home, the most southern spot in the U.S., the harbor where huge liners berth for the day, and great window shopping on Duval Street. Our host hotel this year will again be the Casa Marina Resort and Beach Club -- the best hotel in the Keys. Located on the largest private beach in Key West, the Casa Marina combines old world charm with every amenity you would expect to find in a world-class hotel. Based on very successful trips in prior years, we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to return to this extensively updated hotel. Every year we coincide our New Orleans course with its world famous Jazz Fest (NOJazzFest.com) and this year will be no exception. In support of the city, the artists performing at the Jazz Fests since Katrina have been among the world’s best and this year’s Jazz Fest will maintain the tradition.
