FOLLOW THE STEPS EMERGENCY EVACUATION WEEK Perfect practice, makes perfect!
Consider scheduling the first school week of each term as Emergency Evacuation Week. By nominating this as the regular time throughout the year it’s less likely to be forgotten. Most children can attend as they are back from holidays and conducting it 4 times a year provides adequate opportunity for staff and children to be involved.
All staff should be aware of their role and the role of others in an emergency evacuation.
THE NOMINATED RESPONSIBLE PERSON STARTS THE DRILL
FOLLOW THE EVACUATION PLAN AND INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED BY YOUR FIRE SAFETY COMPANY
DOES THE NURSERY NEED AN EXTRA PAIR OF HANDS TO MOVE ALL BABIES IN LESS TIME?
CONSIDER PROVIDING TODDLERS A SKIPPING ROPE TO HOLD ONTO TO KEEP THEM IN LINE WHILE MOVING TOWARD THE ASSEMBLY AREA
MOVING ALL CHILDREN FROM DANGER TO SAFETY IS THE OBJECTIVE – NOT BEATING A PREVIOUSLY SET TIME OR RECORD
MAKE SURE THE DAY’S ATTENDANCE RECORD IS BROUGHT TO THE ASSEMBLY AREA SO CHILDREN AND STAFF CAN BE TICKED OFF
An ‘Evacuation Rehearsal Record’ should be carried with the Responsible Person to record how the evacuation progressed. It doubles as part of the compliance trail as well as notes relating to any required changes or improvements that need to be made before the next practice. The template can be downloaded from the either the FORMS area or Emergency Evacuation Rehearsal Module.

All evacuation rehearsals must be documented and kept on file. Information should include:
• The date and time of the evacuation • The time duration of the evacuation practice (From when the alert was made until all children
and staff have been accounted for in the assembly area) • Names of participating staff and volunteers • Names of participating children (the day’s sign in sheets are a good checklist) • All rooms must participate • An evaluation of the practice is to be documented and any resulting issues followed up
Additional suggestions:
• Consider staff training in general emergency procedures and Occupational Health & Safety • Share your Emergency Evacuation Rehearsal Record with families via your daybook or even as
an Observation for their child. They will appreciate your diligence and it’s good for families to be aware that their child/children are involved in this style of activity.
• Discuss the rehearsal, its purpose and the children’s involvement before you participate in the exercise so the children are comfortable and feel supported.
