STUDENT ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS Students who wish to apply must: • attend a participating Lehigh County school district and be entering their senior year • complete and submit application by March 1 • have an overall 3.0 or better GPA • have completed at least one year each of high school chemistry and biology with a 3.0 or better grade point average • have completed Trigonometry with a 3.0 or better grade point average • have excellent attendance records, as defined by sending school district • provide a written recommendation from high school guidance counselor and one from a science teacher • meet the academic prerequisites for the Penn State courses in which they plan to enroll If accepted, participation in this program is contingent upon student submittal of all requirements, including: • health certification signed by health care professional • completed TB questionnaire (plus additional TB testing, if required) • required orientation paperwork • $100 initial deposit, which will be applied to first tuition bill • Students must commit to completing the entire school-year long program. Institute, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health

Network, and Penn State Lehigh Valley is

pleased to offer this pioneeringdual-enrollment programwhich combines interactive,university-level classroom learningand observation in a health caresetting. The program is designed for high

school seniors interested in the health care

field and will allow students theopportunity to explore careersin health care first-hand. In

addition, the program is designed to prepare

students for post-secondary education by

offering college-level science courses.

SCHEDULEThe Emerging Health Professionals is a half-day program thatruns the duration of the school year. Students spend Tuesday andThursday with Penn State faculty and the LCTI instructor at PennState Lehigh Valley. Students spend Monday, Wednesday, andFriday at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network (LVHHN)participating in a health curriculum taught by the LCTI instructor.

RECRUITMENT AND ORIENTATIONRecruitment for the Emerging Health Professionals Program beginswith visits by program representatives to Lehigh County highschools early in the spring semester. Students selected for theprogram, as well as their parents/guardians, will be invited to anorientation evening prior to the commencement of the program.Orientation for participants to the Penn State Lehigh Valley andLVHHN campuses will take place at the beginning of theprogram.

APPLICATION PROCESSProgram application is available from school guidancecounselors or online at www.lcti.org. Applications should besubmitted by students or counselors to LCTI. Application deadlineis March 1. Students will be selected for participation by acommittee of representatives from the three program partners.Students will be notified of the status of their application afterApril 1.

TUITIONParticipants are responsible for cost of program plus additionalfees, required textbooks, cost incurred completing requirements,etc. For the 2007-2008 program, Penn State tuition and feesare approximately $1000 per semester (4 credits), whichrepresents a reduced tuition rate due to the dual-enrollment status of the program. Costs are subject to change. Tuitionchanges become available in July of each year.

TRANSPORTATIONParticipants are responsible for their own transportation to all sites, including but not limited to, Penn State Lehigh Valley and LVHHN campuses.

Participants in the Emerging Health Professionals Program will beoffered a total of eight Penn State credits: Chemistry 110 ChemicalPrinciples & Chemistry 111 Experimental Chemistry in the fall semester,and Biology 141 Physiology & Biology 142 Physiology Lab in thespring semester. In addition, they will be able to earn high schoolcredit for the honors LCTI health component of the program. LCTIclasses meeting at LVHHN will reinforce concepts taught at Penn StateLehigh Valley. This integrated model provides a strong framework fordrawing connections between classroom learning and contextual, real-world application, and also for exposing students to the variety ofcareers in health care. Additionally, students will have the opportunityto learn from and observe health care professionals in a variety ofsettings within the LVHHN organization.

Penn State Lehigh Valley courses will be taught by PhD and Master’slevel science faculty, in cooperation with LVHHN clinical staff. The LCTIinstructor is an RN, BSN, MEd.
