Elliot McKellar The BriefEmerge Magazine(brief 3)

As part of the brief I have proposed all issues for the magazine to be published for a year. I have designed and created the first issue which is about type and layout and proposed the further five with a design theme for each and the designers and content which could be in it. I have also proposed an online element to the brief to show how the concept and emerge magazine could be taken further.

01/06

Create a free publication targeted at graphic design students showcasing emerging talent in graphic design, (specifically recent graduates) the publication will be published every other month and each issue will focus on a different area of graphic design (e.g first issue could be about typography and layout) the specific theme of an issue will be mirrored in theshowcased talent

The content focuses on how the showcased designers work in terms of their design process as well as interviews which offer advice to design students who are looking for internships or becoming freelance this acts as inspiration and a platform for design students going in to the design industry.

The center fold for the first issue will double up as a poster with reference to the issues bookshelf feature with Projects Projects and this poster showcases pieces of their work and their design studio to act as inspiration to its viewers. It’s also a reference point for readers to find out more about the studio and their design practice.

Elliot McKellar Issue 1- Type & Layout 02/06Emerge Magazine(brief 3)

The content of this issue was researched to find out who the best talent was, reffering to D&AD and their feature new blood whilst also referencing magazine such as Grafik to see who would be suitable for this issue and had a design practice which was type and layout driven.

The first issue of Emerge is about Type & Layout and showcases the best emerging talent in this field. It also informs students of relevant events in this area as well as offering students the opportunity to be showcased in the magazine.

Interviews with the designers and students will give the readers an insight in to the professional industry and advice they can give having graduated and experienced internships and working with a design studio or agency.

Elliot McKellar Design Direction

The publication also acts as a platform to inspire young designers, the feature ‘bookshelf’ shows what books professionals in the creative industry turn to for reference and inspiration. This is a good way for aspiring designers to develop a professional reading list and understanding.

In the first feature of bookshelf it focusses on Rob Giampietro of Project Projects, this is a perfect example to be used in this issue as their work is heavily driven by typography. This will help give young designers a better understanding of a professional design practice.

Elliot McKellar Proposed Covers

To bring this brief to life I designed and proposed 6 issues of the publication, as the magazine will be issued every other month. These issue all have separate themes of graphic design, so you can see how it would appeal to different designers who specialise and practice in different areas of graphic design.

All covers and inside spreads are be printed on 130gsm double sided in full colour, as the publication is free I had to consider costs of stock and binding techniques so the book is simply folded like a newspaper.

Elliot McKellar Online

Emerge online, the online proposals for this brief helps to round off the ideas and purpose of the publication by offering extra more in depth features which are relevant all readers which will help inspire design student and help them gain a better under-standing of the design industry and a professional practice.

I also wanted to use the online resource as a way of bringing its young readers together to talk about experiences they have had be it from freelancing, college work to internships it would be a forum which would be driven by its readers about topics that they have to deal with as young designers. It would also act as a chance for students to talk with others and potentially collaborate with each other.
