Current Forest Condition

FOREST INVENTORY (2012)

• Forested area on City property = 600 ha

– 145 km of city owned forest bordering with private lands

• Forested area on Private Property = 1,650 ha

• Estimates of ash trees of all ages in forests:

– 180,000 ash trees in public forests

– 500,000 ash trees in private forests


Current Forest Condition

URBAN TREE ASH INVENTORY (2012)

• Approximately 140,000 individual trees (private and

public) in Barrie (mapped in GIS database)

• Included:


City Parcels: 1,700

Road ROWs: 3,560

Total Public: 5,260

Private Property Estimate: 13,000

“The City of Barrie will provide public education and

awareness of the significant threat that Asian Long-horned

Beetle and Emerald Ash Borer poses to our urban forest.”

Staff to monitor ALHB, EAB

and other future forest pests.



November 2006: EAB Discovered in London

2007: Barrie implements a moratorium on planting Ash trees

on public lands and recommends that Fraxinus be

omitted from all private landscaping plans (e.g. site plan

development)
