Embroidering Baby Garments

METHOD 1The first method is to embroider directly onto a garment and add a soft flannel back.

Cut a piece of cut-away stabilizer a little larger than your hoop. Give the stabilizer a quick shot of spray adhesive.

Turn the garment inside out and smooth the stabilizer directly behind the area you would like to embroider with the design.

Turn the garment right side out.

Use embroidery software to print a paper template of the design at full size. Trim around the template for easier placement.

Position the template on the garment. Measure between the center point and each side to center the design.

Poke a hole in the center of the paper template and use the air erase pen to mark the center point on the fabric. Mark the horizontal and vertical axis points as well.

Remove the templates and draw lines out from the horizontal and vertical axis points. These lines will be used for hooping

Hoop the garment. Align the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.

Add the hoop to the machine, load the design, align the needle directly over the center point. Roll the garment back from the hoop and secure with hair clips or small chip clips.

Embroider the design.

Embroidering Baby Garments

After the design has finished sewing, unhoop the garment, turn it inside out, and trim away the excess stabilizer.

Cut a piece of flannel or knit fabric to be a little bit bigger than the design. Use the paper template as a guide for the size.

Cut a piece of fusible web to the size of the flannel or knit fabric piece.

Remove the paper from the fusible web, exposing the sticky side, and smooth the fabric piece on top.

With the garment inside out, lay the fabric piece over the back of the embroidery with the fusible- web side down. Permanently set the fabric in place by pressing with an iron.

And there you have it!

A perfectly embroidered garment -- great looking on the outside and soft and gentle on the inside.

METHOD 2The second method is to embroider on a small piece of fabric and machine applique it to the garment.

Spray a piece of cut-away stabilizer with a quick shot of adhesive and hoop it with a piece of fabric.

Add the hoop to the machine and load and embroider the design.

Embroidering Baby Garments

After the design has finished sewing, unhoop the fabric. Flip the fabric over and draw lines around the design creating a square. Measure and mark 3/4 inch around the square and connect the marks, creating a second square around the first square.

Mark 1/2 inch between the corner of each square. Do this on all four corners.

Embroidering Baby Garments

Cut out the shape following the lines of the outside square.

Make angled cuts on each corner by trimming up to the 1/2 inch mark.

Fold all the edges up about 1/4 inch and press in place.

Embroidering Baby Garments

Cut a piece of fusible web to match the size of the fabric.

Remove the paper from the fusible web, exposing the sticky side. Smooth the fabric on top of the fusible web.

Embroidering Baby Garments

Use a rule to perfectly position the fabric by measuring from the center of the design to each side of the garment.

Permanently set the fabric in place by pressing the fabric with a pressing cloth.

Sew around the fabric with a decorative stitch. We chose a "blanket" or "E" stitch to finish the applique.

And there you have it!

An adorable appliqued embroidery design without a scratchy back.
