Being a part of something special

  • Do we ever stop growing? The words “growing years” may illicit for some the question: “Do we ever stop growing?” Given that this is our 52nd year, Lakes Region Mental Health Center has not stopped growing. We have seen incredible growth in the past decade; in revenues, in staffing, in programming and in our community partnerships. The Board and staff of this organization had a vision for the future – one where we are providing innovative, state-of-the-art services in collaboration with our community partners in a facility that is designed to improve the experience and health outcomes for our patients. Today, we celebrate the attainment of that goal and the continued growth of this organization in serving the needs of our communities.

Peer support is one area that has seen slow and steady growth over many years. We were participants in three state-lead initiatives which this year included a technical assistance grant from SAMSHA that will assist NH in aligning mental health and substance use disorder peer services by way of definition, rules and Medicaid reimbursement. The Community Mental Health Association pushed the peer agenda with its inclusion of peer support on our Assertive Community Team which has been readily embraced here. LRMHC pioneered peers in wellness programming when including it in our integrated care service, “One Health.” We continue to train and support a peer support workforce including access to such, for all our adult clinical teams this year. We look forward to its expansion to families and youth.

LRMHC understands the growth of the organization is dependent upon the growth of our staff. We are investing more each year in the professional development of the employees. Last year we spent $24,896 dollars in tuition reimbursement alone. Our new facility has hosted 103 trainings since our relocation on January 1st. The investment in creating a conference and training center that is equipped with audio/visual technology has supported our efforts to offer more open educational events to our community partners and the public at large. Required trainings for licensure of clinicians are now offered on-site as well. Our physicians and nurse practitioners are offering “Lunch and Learn training

sessions,” keeping staff well informed on subject matters like diagnostics, clinical formulation and psychopharmacology.

We continue to implement and expand evidence based practices. The education of patients and their families and support of systems are key in all these practices. Our list of these include Illness Management Recovery, Supportive Employment, Assertive Community Treatment, InSHAPE, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Informed Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. This year we introduced MATCH (Modular Approach Treatment for Children and Adolescents), an evidenced based practice specifically designed for children and their families, who are diagnosed with anxiety, depression, trauma, and conduct-related disorders. We look forward to the expansion of our integrated practice models including sustaining OneHealth, improving health outcomes and growing our collaborative efforts with primary care and substance use disorder providers through our 1115 waiver work with Community Health Services Network (CHSN).

Our success in growing has been recognized twice this year. Belknap Economic Development Council recognized us for our economic development impact on the region. We received the 2018 Merit Award for Excellence from the NH Architect and Plan NH in recognition of our contribution toward creating a sustainable community through utilization and renovation of an existing building. We know we will never stop growing. We appreciate and embrace the opportunities created for the communities and people we serve through our growing spirit. Society embraces the need for healthy growing children as do we; that said this community mental health center will stay health-focused and will continue to grow for many years to come.

Thank you all for your support and friendship.
