Miniature is a specific type of painting which has been thriving in traditional societies based on the cultural and literary characteristics, requirements based on raw materials such as gold, silver, vermillion, and lapis lazuli, and the view point on the world, nature and its interpretation. This style of painting is completely different from realistic and naturalistic styles. The most important of its characteristics are: The important role of the element of line: the most fundamental element in miniature is the line. This means that in miniature an illustration can be without colour and based on whether the lines are white or black they are called siah-qalam or sefid-qalam. Using level and even colours: all the colour used in a miniature are level, even and lucid, and do not have shading and colour shading within a single background. Disregarding the physical and material realities: The world shown in miniature painting is completely symbolic and is not aligned with the real world. No exact equivalency can be found between the miniature world and the real world, in form, colour, or even in the human, natural and building proportions. The lack of perspective: fundamentally, miniature is based on the two dimensions of width and length and height, depth and distance is principally not shown. The general composition of this type of painting is vertical and the precedence of the events shown are based on the proximity to the main subject which is normally in the middle of the painting. Non-individuality: all the independent drawings such as animals, plants and humans are painted using several main templates and none of them have any individuality with which they can be identified among other drawings. The miniature used to be exclusive to manuscripts and murals in the past, but now individual frames, as well as accessories, rugs, textiles, clothes – by hand or prints – wood and metal work, stamps, and homeware such as chandeliers are all used as well as books and murals.
