TheSoundgateAppallowsyoutointeractivelyexploreanumberofarchaeologicalsitesastheymighthavelookedintheancientpast.Aswellasseeingwhattheylooklike,youcanalsohearwhattheysoundedlike.ThreeWorldHeritageSitesarevirtuallymodelledvisuallyandsonically,includingprehistoriccavesinSpain;StonehengeinEngland;andPaphosTheatreinCyprus.Whileexploringthesespaces,youcantriggermusicalsoundsthatmayhavebeenheardthereinthepast,andhearhowtheacousticsofthespacesenhancesthem,experiencinghowtheacousticschangeasyoumovearoundthesite.Youcanalsovirtuallyvisitanumberofwonderfulplacesthatarenotusuallyaccessibletothepublic.TheSoundgateisintendedtoprovideanexperienceofwhatitmighthavefeltliketobeintheseplacesinthepast.Fromthemenuyoucanselectthreedifferentarchaeologicalsitestovisit.

ThefirstfeaturescavesthatarepartoftheCaveofAltamiraandPaleolithicCaveArtofNorthernSpainWorldHeritageSite.Theyfeaturecavepaintingscreatedtensofthousandsofyearsago,enigmatictracesofearlyhumanart.5cavesarefeatured,ElCastillo,LaGarma,TitoBustillo,LasChimeneasandLaPasiega.Thepaintingsyouwillseerangefrom42,000to15,000yearsold.Theoldestaresimplereddots.Generallytheredimagesyouwillseeareolderthantheblackpaintings,andthesimpledotsorhandshapesyoumightseeareolderthananimalimages.Youmightseedeer,bulls,bison,horsesandgoatsfeatured.Theancientexplorerswhoventuredintothisdarknessinthepast,wouldhavehadonlysmalllampsthatmightprovideaboutonemetreoflighting,gentlyflickeringburninganimalfat,sothisisthekindoflightingyouwillseeinthemodel.We'vemadeitsoyouhavetohuntaroundabittoseethepaintings.Howeveravideoatthestartwillgiveyouaquickguidedtour.Asyouopeneachreconstructedcavemodelyouwillhearasoundrecordingthatwasmadeonsiteinthecave,andafterthatyouwillbeabletoplaymusicalsoundsbypressingbuttons,andhear

theacousticeffectsofbeinginthecave.Bytheway,thiswillworkbetterwearingheadphonesthanusingbuiltinspeakers.Thedigitalmodelsthatwereusedtocreatethecavesimulationsarebuiltfromdozensofphotographsthatweretakeninthecavesandstitchedtogetherdigitally.

ThesecondsiteyoucanvisitfromthemenupageisStonehenge,oneofthemostfamousarchaeologicalsitesintheworld.WhatcanbeseenofittodayinWiltshireinSouthernEnglandisonlyaruinoftheoriginalsite,withabouthalfofthestonesmissingorfallen.VariousphasesofdevelopmentofthesitehavebeendigitallyrebuiltintheSoundgatesothatyoucanexperiencewhatitmighthave

beenliketobetherewhenitwasfirstconstructed.Wecan'tbeabsolutelysureexactlyhowitwasarranged,butarchaeologistsnowhaveaprettygoodidea,althoughwhatyouseeisonlyoneinterpretation,itmayhavebeenslightlydifferent.YoucanbeginbyexploringStonehengeasitwasmorethan5000yearsago,about3000BC,whentherewasbasicallyjustacircularditchwithabankinside.Alargestandingstone,theHeelstonemayhavebeenthereatthetime,wearenotsurewhenthisarrived,orifitisanaturalfeature.ThefirststonecirclecreatedatStonehengeisfeaturedinasecondmodelyoucanselect.Thisisfromaround2900BC.Aboutthistime,acircleofAubreyHoleswasduginsidethebank,anditisnowthoughtthatbluestones,broughthundredsofmilesfromWales,wereplacedintheseholes.PerhapsthesestonesmarkedsomekindofrelationshipbetweentheEnglishlocalsandpeopleinWales.Crematedremainsofpeoplehavebeenfoundintheholes,soitseemsthatStonehengewasakindofcemetery,orhomefortheancestors,atleastatthistime.Thethirdreconstructionofthesiteisdated2500BC,andatthispointwestarttoseehugelocalstonescalledsarsensarrangedinacirclewithlintelsonthetops.Trilithonsarealsoadded,giantpairsofstoneswithathirdstoneontop,lookingalmostlikeadoorway.Thefourthandfinalphaseisdatedtoabout2200BC,withthebluestonesrearrangedamongstthelargerSarsenstones.Thisisthefinalstageofdevelopmentofthesite.

AtStonehengeyoucanpressabuttontotriggerthesoundofareconstructionofanancientbirdboneflute,theWilsfordflute.Thisobjectwasdugupbyarchaeologistsnearby,andhasasimilardatetoStonehenge.SoitispossiblethattheoriginalarchaeologicalfindwasplayedinsideStonehenge,orthatsomethingsimilarwasplayedthereaspartofasacredceremony.Perhapstheancestorswereconsultedforhealing,visitorstravellingtothishomeofthedeadtofindsolutionstotheirproblems.Youcanalsohearawoodendrumbeingplayed,aswellaslocalsongbirdsandcrows.Inthedifferentpartsofthesite,youwillhearechoesreflectingoffthestones,especiallywhenyoumoveinsidethestonecircle.

YoucanchoosetoseethemodelofStonehengeasitmightlookinthedaytime,intheevening,oratnight.Atnightyoucanheardifferentbirds,theowl,nightingaleandcorncrake,birdsthatweremorecommoninthepast.

Thethirdsiteyoucanselectinthemenuisanotherworldheritagesite,PaphosTheatreinCyprus.TheversionmodelledhereisRoman,datedfrombetween300BCand500AD.Thetheatreisnearthesea,andifyoulistencarefullyyoumighthearwavesinthedistance,alongwiththewindflutteringinthematerialofthetheatre'scanopyandcurtains,andperhapssomeseagulls.Youmightalsohearpigeonsanddoves,birdsweknowtheRomansusedtoeat,aswellaslocalbirdstheCyprusWarblerandCyprusWheatear.YoucanalsotriggerthesoundoftwoRomanmusicalinstrumentswithbuttons,thedoublepipe(alsoknownasthetibia),andthelituus.Playingdoublepipeswaslikeputtingtwooboesinyourmouthandplayingthematonce,exceptthatyouusedcircularbreathingsoyoucouldcontinueplaying.Thisinvolvesusingyourcheekstoblowairout,whilebreathinginthroughyournoseatthesametime.TheLituusisalongbronzetubewithacurvedbellattheend,andsoundsalittlelikeatrumpet.Asyoumoveawayfromthefrontyouwillhearmoreofthereverberationofthetheatre,asiftheinstrumentsarebeingplayedatthefront.

Shakers,cowhorns,andandanIsturitzpipereconstructionplayedasaflute,aremadeandplayedbySimonWyatt.TheIsturitzpipewasaflutelikeinstrumentmadeofvulturebone,foundintheIsturitzcaveinFrance,theoriginalobjectwasmadearound20,000yearsago.

Thedrums,playedbyRupertTillandRaquelJimenez,arereplicasofaMansidrumfromwestSiberia,collectedbyArtturiKannistoin1906,madefromsprucewoodandreindeerskinbyJuhanaNyrhineninFinland.ThisisthesortofdrumusedbyShamen.

AreconstructionoftheIsturitzpipeisplayedwithareedbyCarlosGarcia.
