MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL – Mr. W. King-Hunter With such great weather lately, it’s hard to believe that Christmas is less than a month away! We would like to recognize the contribuons that so many staff and students made for our Remembrance Day ceremony to honour those who have sacrificed so much for peace, and for us as Canadians throughout the years, and want to thank so many of our school’s family members for coming to support our ceremony on November 9 th . It was moving to see how thoughul and respecul our students were. We would also like to thank all the parents and families who contributed to and/or joined us for our School Bazaar and Bake Sale, as well as to all those who volunteered to work at the Parent Associaon Casino. With the changes we have made in co-pilong a new Report Card this fall, we look forward to this month’s Parent-Teacher Interviews, as parental involvement in a child’s schooling is crucial for providing feedback for future school planning, and for modeling the importance of educaon for your child. In addion to the parent leer sent home clarifying why and how we are using outcomes to inform and report on student learning (which is likely somewhat different than what many of us have experienced or are most familiar with), we will be offering a Report Card Q&A informaon evening on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:00pm to help clarify and/or answer any quesons that parents may have about the change in how student learning is reported. Although this report card format may be new for Ross Glen School, Outcomes Informed Report Cards describe what students are expected to know and do according to the Alberta Educaon Programs of Study, and are certainly not new in Alberta. We want to thank you as parents for your paence and support in improving learning, assessment and reporng at Ross Glen School, and welcome your quesons and feedback as we connue to refine and move forward. We hope that you and your family will be able to join us at the Family Leisure Centre (FLC) on Thurs, Dec 14th (6:15-8:15pm) for some swimming, skang, hot chocolate, cookies, and possibly even a visit to the Secret Santa Workshop ($1 giſts available for children to purchase for family members). MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL – Mr. W. King-Hunter

With such great weather lately, it’s hard to believe that Christmas is less than a month away!

We would like to recognize the contributions that so many staff and students made for our Remembrance Day ceremony to honour those who have sacrificed so much for peace, and for us as Canadians throughout the years, and want to thank so many of our school’s family members for coming to support our ceremony on November 9th. It was moving to see how thoughtful and respectful our students were.

We would also like to thank all the parents and families who contributed to and/or joined us for our School Bazaar and Bake Sale, as well as to all those who volunteered to work at the Parent Association Casino.

With the changes we have made in co-piloting a new Report Card this fall, we look forward to this month’s Parent-Teacher Interviews, as parental involvement in a child’s schooling is crucial for providing feedback for future school planning, and for modeling the importance of education for your child. In addition to the parent letter sent home clarifying why and how we are using outcomes to inform and report on student learning (which is likely somewhat different than what many of us have experienced or are most familiar with), we will be offering a Report Card Q&A information evening on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:00pm to help clarify and/or answer any questions that parents may have about the change in how student learning is reported. Although this report card format may be new for Ross Glen School, Outcomes Informed Report Cards describe what students are expected to know and do according to the Alberta Education Programs of Study, and are certainly not new in Alberta. We want to thank you as parents for your patience and support in improving learning, assessment and reporting at Ross Glen School, and welcome your questions and feedback as we continue to refine and move forward.

We hope that you and your family will be able to join us at the Family Leisure Centre (FLC) on Thurs, Dec 14th (6:15-8:15pm) for some swimming, skating, hot chocolate, cookies, and possibly even a visit to the Secret Santa Workshop ($1 gifts available for children to purchase for family members). Admission to the Ross Glen Family Christmas Night is FREE of charge, while any clothing donations will be given to the Phoenix Safe House and monetary donations will be given to the Salvation Army.

PLEASE …. ALWAYS HAVE YOUR CHILDREN USE THE CROSSWALK WHEN CROSSING THE STREET.

Having your children cross in the middle of the street to get in or out of your car is dangerous!

The Grade 3 classes wish to extend a BIG thank you to the Redcliff Bakery for donating 3 loaves of Kolach, a traditional Ukrainian Christmas bread. The Grade 3’s will enjoy this as a part of their study of the country of Ukraine. We are thankful to community members and their impact on our learning!

HOT LUNCH ORDERS – Menus are sent out every Monday and are due back on Friday mornings (or Thursday when there is no school on Friday). Mrs. Nickel form the Lunch Program counts these orders and purchases the food supplies for the following week. These funds should be dropped in the Rubbermaid bucket in the office by your child by Friday morning.

After reading the bulletin with your student please return this portion for our monthly draw. (Draw box in hallway out-

side of the office).

My child(ren),

in Grade(s) A / B / C, and I have read the

Road Runner Reporter.

In December, grades 1-3 are participating in a special program

called Book Club. Every week I will be reading a new book to

your child and their classmates. Each book is designed to pro-

mote emotional intelligence within children. A small class dis-

cussion and activity will follow, including time to reflect on

what they have learned from the “book of the day”.

Another exciting program starting in December is called Worry

Warrior. Classroom Teachers have signed up for a weekly

presentation designed to educated children about worries,

stress and anxiety. Children will not only be learning how to

cope with such feelings, but also feel empowered by knowing

that these feelings are normal and manageable. Worry Warrior

is being offered to grades 1 through 6 for a total of 6 weeks.

For more information regarding upcoming programming,

please read my monthly newsletter insert or email me at the

address listed above. For any of your Parent Education needs,

please call McMan Parent Link Centre at 403-504-0833. They

have many options to choose from.

SAFETY PATROL NEWS – Did you know…pedestrian casualty collisions are most likely to occur on Friday and least likely to occur on Sunday? Or how about…pedestrian casualty collisions are most likely to occur during the evening rush hour period?

Please help out our patrollers by slowing down during times when students are dismissed and watch carefully for pedestrians during these busy time periods. Thank you for your continued support of the Ross Glen Safety Patroller program.

PLEASE PARK FAR BACK FROM PATROLS

SO THEY HAVE A GOOD VIEW OF TRAFFIC!

JUST A FEW REMINDERS – Students wishing to return to a classroom after 4:00 p.m. MUST BE accompanied by an adult. This is to provide some assurance that their return to the classroom is without incident.

COLD WEATHER – jumping into the car in a heated garage can make us forget how cold it can feel outside. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather (mittens, scarves, headgear, boots and possibly snow pants) and be prepared to play outside at recess and at noon.

LOST AND FOUND – COME AND GET IT!

Each year, our lost and found box devours hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of clothing that students have left on the playground or around the school. Much of this clothing goes unclaimed each year, and is then sent to various charitable groups.

Please stop by the lost and found box and see if you can find one of your child’s long lost jackets, mitts, shirts or other items. It is located at the rear entrance of the school, just off of the playground. The items not claimed will be donated to charity during the Christmas break.

DECEMBER SAFETY PATROL SCHEDULE

Hand Washing

Anytime is hand hygiene time. Studies done by the Center for Disease Control have shown that if children wash

their hands as few as four times during the school day they have up to 50% fewer colds, flu and sore throats.

There are five important steps:

1. Wet hands with warm water.

2. Apply enough soap.

3. Scrub for 20 seconds focusing on the thumb and fingertips.

4. Rinse off the soap and dirt.

5. Dry hands well.

The first four steps remove 60% of the germs. The last 40% of the germs come off when hands are dried. Keeping

skin in good condition also keeps the germs away, so use lotion if skin gets dry. If the dirt is visible, waterless hand

gels do not work. The best way to keep the germs away is to use plain soap and water, spend the time and get

good friction. Hand hygiene continues to be one of the best and simplest ways to stay healthy all year round.
