Message from the Principal

Year 12 are about to reach the end of 13 years of schooling this week as they formally finish their studies at Homebush Boys High School. They have finished their last classes, their last school assembly and special events including: the Year 12 activity day at Sydney University sports centre, and their Graduation Assembly - all memorable events with the emphasis on community and a celebration of a great six years at Homebush Boys High School. Reaching the end of formal schooling is a significant milestone. The course work, revision and HSC preparation has now been completed in all subjects. The key to success now is for each boy to have a study plan that he follows until the start of the HSC on Thursday 18th October. In a very short time they will be finished and they will be facing the next challenging phase of their lives. On behalf of the Homebush Boys High School community I wish every boy in Year 12 the very best for their Higher School Certificate and their future endeavours. It has been a real pleasure getting to know this Year 12 cohort in a very short time.

Introducing our new 2018/19 Student Leadership Team Our new Prefect body went to Leadership Camp at Fitzroy Falls from early Sunday morning until Tuesday afternoon this week. I was fortunate to visit and spend time with them on Sunday and Monday morning before returning to school. During this time they completed activities that required team work, communication and leadership skills. I was very impressed with their problem solving skills and ability to work together as team. The camp leaders were experts in this field and

ensured that all boys were active and involved for the entire 3 days and nights. Challenging physical activities were mixed with Leadership skill and discussion sessions on a strict schedule. On Monday before I left the camp the boys elected our new school leaders. Congratulations to these boys, I look forward to working closely with them in leading the school from the beginning of next term and through 2019. Thank you to Mrs Duch and Mr Abbou for all their efforts in ensuring that the camp was a great success.



International Student of the Year Last Tuesday night Duy Quang Mai from Year 10 was awarded the International School Student of the Year at a very prestigious event held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Duy Quang was presented with the award by the Minister for Trade and Industry Niall Blair. Duy Quang is pictured here with Mrs Anton, myself, Mrs Elizabeth Webber (Chief Education Officer, DE International), Mrs Horiatopoulos and Mr Peter Smith (Strathfield Rotary) all there to support him and celebrate with him.

In the two years since coming to Sydney from Hanoi, Vietnam, Duy Quang has become a highly respected leader in the local community. An avid volunteer, the 16-year-old student has earned praise for his compassionate and giving nature, and become an exceptional role model. Duy Quang teaches English to younger students, assists Year 7 students via the Peer Support Program, and has been instrumental in the recently formed Social Justice Club, which sees students advocate for issues such as gender equality and refugee rights. The broader community has benefitted from Duy Quang’s participation in the NSW

State Conference for UN Youth Australia, his volunteer work at the local Salvos Store, and his work with the Interact Club, a school-based Rotary club. In his spare time, the Year 10 student loves to practice his art and photography. ‘I think every small moment in life is captivating, and I want to capture them,’ he says.

From the Deputy’s Desk Year 8 Literacy and Numeracy Assembly

On Tuesday 28 August during Period 3 Year 8 were introduced to the online Literacy and Numeracy Program by Mr Martyrn Bawden. This fortnightly program is available to students through Moodle and they were issued a Literacy and Numeracy booklet at the assembly. Exercises will be posted and marked and student progress will be tracked. Feedback will be provided to students and I have

already received positive, enthusiast comments from Year 8 students informing me that they have completed their first exercise. We hope that their enthusiasm continues throughout the year!

Year 8 Music Incursion

On Thursday 30 August Year 8 students where highly engaged with the Music incursion that was held in our school hall. The students thoroughly enjoyed the musical performance by either participating in the show or dancing around in the background. We would like to thank Mr Alexander and Mr Albertson for organising

the event and all the staff that assisted in the program. It was great to see Year 8 enjoying this wonderful experience.

International Student Award

Duy Quang Mai Year 10 has been nominated for the prestigious International Award. The film crew came out to our school and interviewed Duy Quang asking him questions about his life and achievements. It is a great honour for our school to have such a wonderful student and to receive this nomination. We wish him all the best.



Year 12 CAPA Night

The Year 12 CAPA night was a huge success on Thursday night as it showcased the creative talents of our Year 12 Music and Visual Arts students. It was great to see a number of parents, staff and our SGHS colleagues attend this magnificent event and it was a pleasure to see John Kennedy attend once again to support our students. The quality and standard of the artworks and musical performances was a testament to the dedicated teachers Mr Letsios and Mr Alexander for all their hard work this year! Well done Ms Juska and the CAPA faculty.



Breakfast Club

It is rare for me to visit the Breakfast club on Thursday mornings at it is the only time I spend with my son in the morning dropping him off to school, however, I managed to visit this week. It was great to see the commitment and dedication of both the staff and students. It is always a great opportunity to sit down and have a chat with colleagues and students and to have time to listen to some loud music before we head off to our usual grind. Thank you to Mrs Anton, Mrs Houvardas and all the students for all their hard work and the ability to smile all the way through!

Community Liaison Officer – NSW Police Force

On Friday 14 September, Mr Gandhi Sindyan, the Community Liaison Officer based at the Campsie Local Area Command, came to talk to some of our Year 8, 9 and 10 students. This was a great start to build positive outcomes for our students with the wider community. I will be in discussions with Senior Constable Anne Ferfolya and Gandhi to organise workshops for our students next term. This is a great opportunity for our students to build positive goals for their future.

Building Strong Community Links and strengthening ties with our local feeder school communities.

• Transition program with Homebush Public School

Our Transition program with Homebush Public School continues to be popular and the “talk of the town”. Many thanks to Mr Johnston and Ms Lee who put on a great “scientific show” in Week 6 this term. The boys from HPS loved the wonderful world of Science and many commented that “Science is fun” and how much they loved the lab facilities. Bone franctures versus bunsen burners…intriguing and highly entetauining for our young visitors.

• Library Network Meeting

Many thanks to Mr Beal for coordinating and hosting the Sydney Teacher Librarian Network Meeting in Week 8. The day’s program was an excellent show and tell and sharing of resources and what works best in schools. I managed to pop into the library in the morning and the crowd were engrossed in metalanguage that was foreign to me. The use of technology made me think how much I missed out on by growing up in the 80’s and visiting Canterbury local library……..all books, no computers to be seen!



• Community Reading Program.

In Week 8, Mr Howard escorted Bassam Maaliki, Tom Nieser and Zain Ousmand of Year 10 to the Nugent Park community reading program at Chester Hill. As part of the Sydney Thunder Leadership program, HBHS is participating in a range of leadership opportunities in the community, Bassam, Tom and Zain has the job of reading to a group of very keen and wide eyed 3-4 year olds at the community fair day. From all accounts the boys had a great time and it is always nice to receive positive feedback from Jonathan Lees, who is our contact liaison person in the program. Prefects 2018-2019

Congratulations to the boys below who were elected to the position of Prefect 2019-2019. Over 300 votes were cast from Year 11 2018 students as well as teaching and non-teaching staff members. At the time of writing, the 2018-2019 Prefects are attending a Prefect Leadership Camp at Fitzroy Falls. One of their key jobs during this time, is to elect the Captain, Vice-Captain and Senior Prefect for 2018-2019. The successful students will be announced to the student body by the end of Term 3.

The Prefect 2018-2019 investiture will occur on Tuesday 16 October 2018 at 9:15 am.

As always, the group of students is representative of our multicultural student population.

Preliminary Final Examinations

The Year 11 students have just completed 2 weeks of Preliminary Final examinations. Thank you to all parents for providing the stability and guidannce on the homefront and to all staff or their assistrance and feedback. The boys seemed very

settled and most controlled their nerves. Continue to maintain a



positive attitude around the boys. The students will be receiving their results soon and this is an opprtunity to reflect on the 10 units they may continue with for HSC 2019.

Coping with exam results Not doing as well as you expected or hoped in your exams can be really tough.

It can also be tough if you feel you didn’t meet the expectations of others, such as family members or teachers.

How pressure might affect you You might be experiencing a range of feelings after receiving your results including:

Talk to someone outside the situation Talking to someone outside the situation, such as a friend, teacher or counsellor, can be a great way of expressing your feelings and exploring other options.

Talk to the person setting the unhelpful expectations Sometimes the person might be unaware of the pressure they have put on you and how it affects you. When you talk to them, trying how to explain how unhelpful this is, it might be helpful to use a phrase such as “When you treat me like that, then this happens”.

Challenge and reset your expectations Sometimes it can be helpful to re-think your own expectations. This may help you decide if they are achievable for you. Ask yourself “What would I suggest to a friend in this situation?”

Explore other options for the future Sometimes expectations are only focused on one outcome and so if you don’t meet them you might feel disappointed or that you have failed. Usually there are a number of ways to achieve a goal. It may help to talk to someone you trust about what the different strategies might be. This may be a teacher, a friend, counsellor or family member.

Take some time to chill out Sometimes a change of scenery can be helpful – it’s important to give yourself permission to do this. This might include going for a walk or listening to your favourite music, reading a book, going to the movies – whatever works for you.

Express your feelings Writing down your feelings or keeping a journal, can be a great way of understanding a situation and reducing the power of expectations. It can also help you think about alternative solutions to problems. Other ways you might express your feelings in a way that won’t cause bodily damage to yourself, another person, or your computer might include yelling, punching, or crying into a pillow, or dancing around the room to loud music.

Look after yourself Expectations can lead to a lot of stress. It’s important to take time out by doing something that you usually enjoy. Even though you might not feel like it or have time, exercising and eating well can help. Getting plenty of sleep can also help. Exercise helps stimulate hormones, such as endorphin, which help you feel better about yourself and your life.

If you haven’t done a lot of exercise before, it might be a good idea to start doing something small a couple of times each week, such as a 15 minute walk or two or three laps of a pool.

Visiting your GP for a general check-up can be a way of making sure there isn’t any physical problem.

Year 9 Assembly and Year 9 High Achievers Luncheon.

Thank you to Mrs Kumaralingam, Mr Kisso, Ms Chapman and Mr Bawden for their work with the Year 9 Assembly and High Achiever’s Luncheon this term. I attended the Year 9 High Achievers luncheon and was pleasantly happy to see over 50 students recognised for their efforts in Semester 1. A positive way to promote our students and to left the standards. Ms Kumaralingam spoke to the boys about setting high standards and working hard to reach them. Ms Kumaralingam also spoke about not losing character and using education as a way to build character as a sign of one’s person and stance not just at school but also in the wider community.

Year 7 Zoo Excursion

The Year 7 Zoo excursion was a great way for students to explore all that Taronga has to offer and meet their Semester 2 Science outcomes. Many Year 7 science students and teachers reported that the time at the Zoo was both enjoyable and educational for the boys. Over a dozen boys saw me after the excusrion to say they did have a good time and how much theur enjoyed the educatioanal aspect of the day. One of our Year 7 boys was chosen to help with the seal show. Thank you to Ms K Kaur for her

organisation and to all the staff who ensured the boys were kept safe at all times.



R U Ok Day

Well done to Mr Lee and the SRC students for a very successful R U Ok day on Friday 14 September 2018. The messages and role play on assembly were powerful and the whole day had a feel of support and positivity. The campaign to raise awareness hits home for many staff and students on the day. Every day should be an R U OK Day at HBHS!

Staff Achievements

Good luck and good bye to Mr Peter Wilson as he embarks on his new role as Relieving Deputy Principal at Marsden High School from Monday 24 September 2018 till the end of Term 1 2019. Mr Wilson was successful thorough an expression of interest merit selection process and is very excited about the adventures that lie ahead. Thank you for all your efforts as Head Teacher and teacher of History and a leader of the school’s Student Engagement Team. On behalf of all your colleagues at HBHS, enjoy Marsden High School. TAS faculty is a very large, dynamic and established faculty and has an outstanding record in academic and vocational excellence. The values of the faculty are founded on the principles of tradition, care and innovation. The faculty’s supportive and caring environment builds learning capacity in a wide range of academic and vocational subjects.

The school has excellent facilities and resources, including computing Labs, Engineering Studies Lab, Electronics, Wood and Metal workshops, Graphics Lab, VET Construction workshop and a state of the art refurbished Hospitality kitchen, all equipped with interactive white boards and Multi-Media facilities. The faculty’s delivery of comprehensive, inclusive, student centred programs is achieved with support from highly skilled and committed teachers and intensive collaborative work in differentiating lessons to meet needs of every student. Term 3 has been a busy one with Stage six HSC Trial exams, Industrial Technology Major Projects and Year 11 Preliminary final exams. Students have been given assessment tasks to address the directives of new NESA policy for assessment, thus variety and number of formal tasks have changed from previous years. We have been fortunate to have a room refurbished and converted into a Commercial Kitchen. We are excited to have an opening ceremony taking place early Term Four.

We wish all our HSC students very best in their studies and future endeavours. A reminder to the rest of students that we still have a lot of content and formal tasks to do before the end of the year , so stay focused and committed.

NSW School of Languages Learn locally. Communicate globally

Students in Years 9-12 at HBHS have the opportunity to study a wide variety of languages not offered here at school, by studying with the state’s leading language educator via distance education with the NSW School of Languages, located at Petersham.

The school offers 12 languages to students if the language is not offered at HBHS. The courses conform to NESA requirements and therefore can be studied as courses for completion of ROSA and the

HSC.

Languages available include: Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Modern Greek, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Courses are at Beginners, Continuers and Extension levels.

Student learning is provided at HBHS during the regular school day and is supported through a diverse program of written materials, telephone lessons, online activities, email, face to face study days at the Petersham campus, excursions and even overseas tours.

Students studying languages at HBHS have their courses worked into their daily timetable here at HBHS. Studying via the NSW School of Languages not only provides students with wonderful opportunities to study a wide variety of languages, but also provides opportunities to develop valuable skills in time management and independent learning.

Many HBHS students have successfully completed courses for both ROSA and the HSC via NSW School of Languages and have found the experience enjoyable, rewarding and successful.

Applications are now open for students in Years 8 and 10 and close on 16 November 2019.

7HIE use Minecraft to discover the pyramids of Ancient Egypt

7HE had an engaging and enjoyable lesson with Mr Beal and Mrs Symonds demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of Ancient Egyptian pyramids using Minecraft. Students were required to use the information learnt in class to design and label an Ancient Egyptian pyramid and its internal chambers and passageways. Students used their knowledge, creativity and Minecraft to bring to life the burial chambers and treasures of the great Pharaohs.

Students not only had to use prior learning about pyramids, but also skills in the use of various technologies as they were to present their designs in Power Point and upload their finished product onto Moodle for marking. Below are some examples of the end product.

I am impressed by the achievements of our Year 9 Cohort in academia and in other fields. During the last semester over fifty students received their High Achiever’s Awards. Some students received more than one award for taking the first place in more than one subject. Also as a cohort, they have fared well in this year’s NAPLAN tests.

This term we had our Year Assembly in Week 7, where students were informed about the Minimum Standards Tests. This cohort will be sitting this test during the first half of next year. Mr Martyn Bawden our Literacy consultant explained,“Students who are sitting HSC exams in or after 2020 must sit online reading, writing and numeracy tests when they are ready in Year 10, 11 or 12 or even after the HSC, to receive their HSC”. Students will have two

opportunities a year in Years 10, 11 or 12 to pass these tests. They will also be able to take them for a few years after they leave school. This is because “From this year, Year 9 NAPLAN tests will no longer be available as an early way for students to demonstrate the standard. This change has been made to ensure NAPLAN remains focussed on its diagnostic purpose and to reduce unnecessary stress on young people”. Also during the assembly our Year 9 Music students Joseph Wang and Sisitoutai Taufa displayed their skills and were praised by our special guest Mr Bawden. Joseph Wang’s exceptional piano performance of "Croatian Rhapsody" by Maksim was particularly praised by many staff members and enjoyed by the students. In addition during the assembly, some of our students received Gold and Silver Awards. Well done! Emad Fayad, Sudharshan Sundaramurthy and Krish Sethi.

This term Year 10 have been working hard to develop an idea of what shape their futures will take. Some have taken opportunities to help out in the wider community while others have supported our teachers in trying to improve the transitional outcomes of our Year 7 cohort. It has not been an easy term for all students and some still choose to make poor decisions that reflect poorly on themselves and on our school, however, these students and events do not define the Year 10 cohort. Year 10 at Homebush Boys High School continue to demonstrate the capacity for improvement that makes our learning environment strong. This term our group of approximately 40 Peer Support Leaders completed the final module with Year 7. The Values topic seeks to make students cognisant of their behaviours and their true beliefs about their role within the school community. Our leaders have acted with maturity and have given us some valuable information about the ongoing success of the program moving forward. We thanked the leaders with a barbecue earlier in the term and look forward to presenting them with their well deserved badges in the early weeks of Term 4. A large focus over the last few months has been the Year 10 subject selection process and the difficult decision faced by Year 10 of what subjects to take in Years 11 and 12. Every attempt has been made by our timetabling team to ensure that as many students get their preferences as is feasible under such complex constraints. While some subjects have been unable to run as desired all subjects have been selected to run based on student selections and we hope that all students are able to take part in the subjects they have chosen and are passionate about. I hope that our students have taken this decision maturely as this will shape the course of students schooling for the next two years. We held a subject selection evening earlier in the year where the process was outlined and the relationship with NESA and the HSC examination was explained for parents. Several interested parents even stayed behind to listen to an impromptu presentation from our Principal regarding common misconceptions relating to HSC marking and scaling. We have tried to strongly engage students with thoughts about their futures over this last year, looking towards short and long term aspirations. Ms Chapman organised for students to analyse their sleeping behaviours to try and put students in the best position to succeed in all pathways moving forward. The results have recently arrived and we hope to discuss them with the cohort in the upcoming weeks. We recognise and acknowledge that not all students want or plan to go to University, for these students Ms Anton has been working hard to equip students with the skills to venture out into the workforce, many of these skills students do not develop through the typical school curriculum. Mr Carrozza and Ms Anton have put in a great deal of effort into organising an information evening for students to look at options outside of Year 11 and 12 schooling. Many presenters were made available and we hope students who took an interest gained the information necessary to make an informed decision. To all staff who have taken time to support Year 10 in developing their plans for the future I would like to give my thanks. As we approach the end of the year I want to thank all staff for the support they give to the Year 10 group, their time and effort is helping give our students a greater appreciation for the need for growth and maturity. As the Year Advisor for Year 10, I often receive an interesting mix of anecdotes about the cohort and I hope that our boys can continue to develop and grow as they transition into being a part of our senior school and an even more integral part of our whole school community at Homebush Boys High School.
