Newsletter No 31 – 17th
October 2013
Dear Parents
NAPLAN Reports
Students in Year 3, 5 & 7 will bring a sealed envelope home today containing their 2013 NAPLAN Report. These reports were delayed due to a printing error. A brochure that explains the reports is included. When reviewing these reports, parents should remember that NAPLAN tests are an indication of student performance on the day of the test and cover a limited part of the curriculum. As such they do not provide the full assessment of a student’s performance that teachers provide through semester reports and conversations with parents.
Como Primary Celebrates 100 Years
2016 will see this school celebrate its Centenary and to ensure we make the most of this milestone, I am forming a Committee of interested parents, staff and former students to manage the process. The first
meeting will take place next week on Wednesday
October 23rd at 7.00 pm in the staff room.
The School Council has begun this process by meeting with the principal of a school that has held its own highly successful centenary celebrations and they have a wealth of ideas and information to start the ball rolling. I look forward to meeting with all interested people next Wednesday.
Staffing & Funding Reforms
At this time each year teachers are engaging in a review of our operations for the year and formulating plans for the new school year. In light of the significant reductions in staffing and funding that we will experience from 2014, several aspects of our previous operations will come under close scrutiny and hard decisions will need to be made. While schools always work within the available resources, these changes will impact quite heavily and unfortunately the school will have to follow the
advice from Regional Office ‘to do less with less’.
IPS
The option for Como Primary School to sign up to the Independent Public School (IPS) program is again on the table. A delegation from the school will attend a briefing on Friday next week and in the following weeks the wider community will be provided with opportunities to engage in information sessions and a decision making process. Members of the school community are encouraged to visit the department website to view the wealth of information that is posted. http://www.det.wa.edu.au/independentpublicschools

Virtues
Peacefulness
What Is Peacefulness?
Peacefulness is an inner sense of calm. It comes especially in quiet moments of reflection or gratitude. It is getting very quiet and looking at things so you can understand them. Peacefulness is a way of approaching conflict with others so that no one is made wrong. It is being fair to others and yourself. Peace is giving up the love power for the power of love. With peacefulness, everyone wins.
Speech Night
An early reminder that our whole school Speech
Night is on Tuesday 10th
December at 6.30pm. All students from Years 1 – 7 are expected to attend this most important occasion. It is an opportunity to celebrate academic, artistic, sporting and citizenship success across the school as well as farewelling our graduating year sevens. Please mark this date on your calendar.
VacSwim December/January school holiday programs
Enrolments are now open. Swimming pools and beaches are part of our Western Australian lifestyle. It is important for every child to learn to swim and develop essential water safety skills. VacSwim’s December/January school holiday swimming programs are conducted by qualified instructors who teach children the skills to be confident swimmers and safe in the water. For information and to enrol, visit det.wa.edu.au/swimming. For further information, telephone VacSwim on 9345 4007 or email [email protected].
No Hat/No Play Policy A reminder that students must wear the wide brimmed school hat at all times when outside.
Those not wearing a wide brimmed hat must sit on a bench in the covered assembly area.
