I t's hard to believe that we are already two full months into this school year! Stu-
dents at CSNC have been ex-tremely busy throughout the month of October as classes and extra-curricular activities have all been in full swing. Our Celtic Football team is playing in the
final this coming Friday. Please come out and cheer them on. For our small school of 400 to be competitive against schools of 1500+ demonstrates the exemplary program we have, and the commitment received from the players and coaches. We'd like to thank all those involved for representing CSNC so well.
Along with football, our volleyball teams have had fine starts to their seasons! All 4 teams are well into their league schedules, along with participation in many weekend tournaments. We are also very excited to have entered a boy's hockey team in the WHSHL this year, and the participation from students in grades 9-11 hopefully will help us sustain a program well into the future.
Athletics, academics, musical events and countless lunch hour clubs have kept our students (and staff) with barely a minute to spare. We are so proud that our school community is able to of-fer all of these opportunities to our students - it is truly a team effort involving students, parents, staff and community vol-unteers that makes CSNC the special place that it is. On behalf of the school's administration, thank you! ❑

O n October 18th our Grade 12 Biology class took a field trip to the Youth BI-OLab at St. Boniface Hospital. Prior to
our visit, Steve Jones, head of the BIOLab, in-serted a segment of DNA in to bacteria which made it glow. The strand is originally from jelly-fish! The bacteria replicated thousands of times overnight. The students were then able to use salts, alcohol, and enzymes to extract the DNA from the bacteria and then cut out the specific
segment that made the bacteria glow. They were then able to run the DNA through a process called gel electrophoresis, which further separated out the glowing strand – the students were able to see the strand glow under a black-light. It was an awesome opportunity for the students to try their hands at real
genetic engineering processes in a state of the art, multi-million dollar lab! ❑
Ooskat 2019
T ansi, Hello
Ooskat has had an eventful start to the school year. On September 30th, we took part in Orange Shirt Day, which is an annual event designed to pro-
mote awareness and educate people about the Indian Residential School System, as well as honour Residential School Survivors. The residential school system had an enormous impact on Indigenous communities in Canada, removing children from their homes and forcing them to live in cold, overcrowded schools. In addition to the time lost with their families, they also lost their culture and language. When a per-son chooses to wear an orange shirt on Orange Shirt Day, they are sending the mes-sage that Every Child Matters.
Ooskat also attended the play The Third Colour on October 16th. Written by Indigenous playwright Ian Ross, The Third Colour uses humour to tackle the serious issues of colonialism and reconciliation in Canada. Some comments from the stu-dents were: “it was funny” and “it left you thinking”.
Thinking ahead to the Christmas season, we have been brain-storming how we can help and give back to the community and have decided that we will donate to the Bear Clan Patrol Inc. this year. Bear Clan is a volunteer organization that de-scribes themselves as “Community People Working with the Community to Provide Personal Security”. You can learn more about them on their website. We will be collecting the following items for the Patrol to give to those in need:
• Socks
• Mittens
• Hats
• Bottles of water
• Non-perishable food items
• Baby formula
• Diapers – all sizes
• New, unwrapped toys
Let’s come together as a community and make this happen!
