Leisure Walks in Eltham Shorter Route Walking directions: 1 From Eltham Church, cross the road at the trafc lights and enter Court Yard. Cross again opposite the Public House and bear right. Keep straight and cross safely again at North Park mini round- about.You now have a straight route to the Tarn via some of Eltham’s nest housing stock, some of which is early Victorian.You will pass the entrance to Royal Blackheath Golf Course, the oldest Club in England. The clubhouse is a former hunting lodge of Henry VIII. Note house number 99 on Court Road the house is called “Wuthering Heights” and pays homage to Kate Bush who was a former Eltham resident at the start of her career and Wuthering Heights was her rst number one hit. 2 Enter Tarnwood Park at the gate marked with a Green Chain Walk signpost. See the ice well, a very early type of refrigeration and recently refurbished. Follow the path round the lake. Go clockwise and cross the bridge. There are nice seats on the bridge. Continue clockwise and leave the Tarn at rst exit bearing right. Continue right into Court Road and cross at safe area bearing right and north. Continue straight then left into Tilt Yard Approach. 3 Medieval jousters on horseback would need to “tilt” their lances to enter through. Here, you are anked by an original Tudor wall! 4 Continue left past the Gatehouse and you will see the Palace entrance. This is run by English Heritage and is well worth a visit. The bridge across the moat is possibly the oldest in London and well stocked with carp. Turn around clockwise and follow the path bearing left to Court Yard. Follow until you reach the original crossing point to Eltham Church. Well done for completing the shorter route. Why not try the longer route next time! Cross Archery Road just before the junction with Orangery Lane and Gourock Road. Continue past Dobell Road with a Blue Plaque at number 55 for Herbert Morrison the former Labour Cabinet Minister. At the junction to Strongbow Road turn left into Station Approach crossing at the zebra keeping straight then turn right into Well Hall Road. 2 Go under the bridge and cross Dunvegan Road. At Well Hall Parade cross and bear right into Craigton Road. Number 44 opposite is where Bob Hope was born. He lived here until he was four years old. Cross the road and turn right at the end of Craigton Road and enter Grangehill Road. Cross Earlshall Road then cross Greenvale Road and turn right into Dunvegan. Shorter RouteA 30 minute walk taking in the Church, the Tarn and the PalaceGreenwich Pleasaunce is one of the hidden gems of this part of the borough. It is a charming park and host to the East Greenwich Community Festival. It is lovely place to relax, for children to play, and to catch up with friends over a coffee or tea and the splendid community café.
