Remembrance Day We commemorated Remembrance Day this year in our own classes. Time was spent discussing Remembrance Day, the significance of this year, being the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. We learnt about the event in Canberra ‘62 000 poppies’. A display of 62 000 handcrafted, red poppies on the Memorial's grounds is the centrepiece of commemorations, symbolically representing Australian lives lost in the First World War. Each handcrafted poppy was created by a volunteer and represents an Australian life lost in the First World War. The names of those lost are individually listed on the Memorial’s Roll of Honour. Every single poppy was unique. We all agreed this was a beautiful display.

After watching some footage about Remembrance Day and having a group discussion about how and why it is special to Australians, students were asked to write about Remembrance Day in any genre they chose. There were a range of letters from soldiers, nurses, family members, reflections, diary entries and a variety of poems. I would like to share some writing from the year 5/6 class.

Laura – Year 6

To me, Remembrance Day means thinking about the people who went to war. They should all be awarded for their bravery and courage, especially those who sacrificed their own lives to help protect our country, they held strong watching people who were killed right in front of them. They kept on fighting, knowing they could be next themselves.

4 “Helping each Other Grow”

Term 4 – Week 5 Wednesday, November 21, 2018

This week, students in the 2/3/4 class have been presenting their maths projects. They were commissioned by the Mayor and Council of Barcelona, Spain to revamp their concrete jungles into beautiful and useful communal spaces for all the community to enjoy. They needed to work out the area of their space and all the elements they included.

Presentation Night & End of Year Concert Cathy has been working very hard with the students on their activities for the end of year concert to be held in week 9 at Lismore Heights Public School hall. It is sure to be a great night for everyone!

Year 6 Farewell Dinner The year 6 Farewell dinner will be held at La Vida Restaurant in Lismore on Tuesday, 18 December. For students moving onto High School next year, this is a wonderful night for staff, year 6 students, parents and carers to enjoy a social night commemorating their primary school years.
