Hauck’s Anti-Surge Control Systems(ASC) are designed to reduce surging pulsations that may disturba combustion process at reducedair flows. These pulsations aremost likely to occur in applicationswhere it is necessary to keep theblower operating during periods ofvery small demand - periods thatmay call for as little as 10 to 20% ofrated volume output of the blower.

The system is comprised of a variable damper which is attachedto the turbo blower inlet flange.Vane position is automaticallydetermined by the systemdemand. Blower surge for a givenblower is a function of the locationof the main air control valve down-stream of the blower dischargeand the system operationalrequirements. Blower surge is automatically controlled by modulating the pressure dropacross the inlet damper vanes, maintaining a constant dischargepressure. The operating point oneach blower curve is kept to theright of the flow rate that wouldallow surging.

Energy savings are an additionalbenefit when using an ASC system.Vane re-swirl reduces blowerhorsepower at partial load andgenerates a different performancecurve at each damper position.Energy costs are lowered byreduced motor amperage draw. With this in mind, the ASC can alsofunction as a system flow regulatorby connecting the control motordirectly to the system demandprocess variable.

The control sequence is illustratedin the figure above. If the demandon the blower is decreased in volume from a normal operatingpoint F, to another normal operatingpoint G, the vanes close to a newposition providing the new flowand maintaining the pressureequal to that at point F.

If the demand is further decreasedin volume from point G to a minimalturndown point, I, the vanes closecompletely and the pressure is stillmaintained at a constant value.

Further volumetric flow decreasesfrom point I cause the pressure torise accordingly towards point J.Note that the blower operatingpoint remains to the right of themaximum pressure point through-out the turndown sequence, reducingthe possibility of surge. Reversingthe demand on the blower causesthe sequence to reverse. Theoperating point on each blowercurve is kept to the right of the flowrate that would allow surging.
