    Event Report

    A VISIT TO BETHANY HOME

On 30th January 2010, 30 members of the Welfare Club of SMK Jalan

Mengkibol visited the Bethany Home for Orphans. The advisors, Puan Zaleiha and

Encik Zulnaidi, accompanied us on the visit. Our purpose was to make a donation,

cleaning-up and cheering up the orphans. We brought some food, drinks and toys.

We also brought along guitar and a camera to take pictures.

We chartered a bus to the Bethany Home. After taking the attendance, the bus

boarded and embarked our journey exactly at 8.00 a.m. All of us were feeling on top

of the world to visit the orphanage home as most of us have not been there. Some of

us sang lively songs while a few others whistled a few catchy tunes. It was beautiful

Sunday morning and the sun was shining brightly in the big, blue sky. Birds were

chirping and flying freely above the green trees. Our advisors smiled broadly when

    they saw our happy expressions.

The journey took about 40 minutes. The orphans who had been informed

earlier about our visit were waiting eagerly for us at the gate. With the sight of us,

their faces lit up brightly. They greeted us with broad smiles that reached their eyes.

The supervisor of the orphanage home, Miss Angela, who was with the orphans,

shook our hands to welcome us. Then, she led us into the home.

When the orphans and our members were seated comfortably at the lounge,

we presented each of them a mystery gift. It was heart-warming scene to see their

joy and gratitude as they excitedly opened their individual presents. They were

touched by our generosity and repeatedly thanked us. After that, we took a few

    photos for remembrance.

The supervisor of the orphanage delivered a speech to welcome us. Our

advisor, Pn Zaleiha gave a speech as well. She explained her gratitude and how

honoured she is and we are to be here today with all of them. Then the orphans gave

us a presentation. They sang a few songs and presented a few cultural dances to

entertain us. A few orphans even recited some poetry and nursery rhymes. Their

performances were awesome that all the audience clapped their hands loudly.

After the presentation by the orphans, we separated into 4 groups for the

cleaning up operation. For instance, we were assigned to clean up the hostel, tidy up

the classroom and the lounge. By the lunch time, the whole orphanage was spick

and span. After a short rest, we made our way to the dining hall for a hearty meal

together. There were a variety of delicious food such as fried rice, fried noodle,

chicken curry, vegetables and fried nuggets on the table donated by generous

individuals and parents of some members. The lunch was truly tasty and we ate like

horses as we were very hungry. Within minutes, the serving dishes were empty.

When lunch was over, we adjourned to the lounge once more for a time of fun

and fellowship. About an hour later, a van arrived with a surprising gift. It was a brand

new computer donated by our club. The orphans were extremely excited. They

immediately gathered around the computer, all talking at the same time. The

supervisor smiled broadly. We were glad to hear their happy laughter ringing gaily in

the lounge. Our chairman took out his guitar and we sang some songs to entertain

the orphans. Finally, we took some group photos with the orphans standing proudly

    behind the gift.

When it was time to leave, we bade farewell to our friends, promising to return

for another visit soon. For us, this memorable visit was a worthwhile trip and a day

well spent. We learnt to be generous and love the unfortunate regardless of age,

    race and religion.
