Game NotesSeason Opener: The Elmira College women’s volleyball team opens the 2014 season against the University of Pitts-burgh at Bradford. Elmira has been excellent in season opening games, going 11-2 in the last 13 season openers. Of Elmira’s last 13 season opening games, nine have been played at Speidel Gymnasium, with the Soaring Eagles posting a convincing 8-1 record. However, the only team to beat Elmira in a home season opener in the last 13 years was the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford during the 2010 season.

Purple vs. the Panthers: In the last 13 years, Elmira and Pitt-Bradford have squared off a total of seven times. El-mira owns a 5-2 edge in the series with their only two loss-es coming in the 2010 and 2007 seasons. Additionally, the Purple and Gold are riding a four-match win streak against the Panthers entering tonight’s contest.

Big Shoes to Fill: Scrolling through Elmira’s roster, one very noticeable name that is missing is former All-Ameri-can Taryn Rumsey ’14. Rumsey, who graduated last June, accounted for nearly 40 percent of Elmira’s kills in the 2013 season. Her absence however has opened the door for several returning players to step-up, including local tal-ent Kierstin Derr ’16, who logged a career-high 253 kills last season.

Looking Ahead: Following tonight’s non-conference tilt with the Panthers, Elmira will make the short trip to the Flower City as the Soaring Eagles compete in the Univer-sity of Rochester Tournament. Elmira will open tourna-ment play against another team from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in Penn State Behrend.

Game NotesLast Time Out: The Panthers of Pitt-Bradford enter to-night’s non-conference match with a 2-2 overall record after competing in the University of Scranton Tournament last weekend. Pitt-Bradford opened the tournament with a per-fect 2-0 record with a pair of wins against Bard College and Wentworth Institute of Technology before dropping their next two contests to Keystone College and the University of Scranton.

Returning Veterans: Pitt-Bradford returns several key play-ers from a season ago, including last season’s kills leader in Taylor McMillen ’15 as well as the Panther’s top two set-ters in Peyton Kauffman ’15 and Brittni Cumberland ’15. McMillen will be both setters’ main target as the 2013 All-AMCC First Team selection posted a season-high 21 kills against the Soaring Eagles last season. On the other hand, Cumberland just might be as big of a threat with her tran-sitioning into more of an attacking role this season as she has already posted a pair of double-digit kill performances.

One Win From Career 150: Head coach Tina Phillips is sitting on 149 career wins after picking up two wins this past weekend in Scranton. One more win for Coach Phillips will give her 150 career wins at Pitt-Bradford.
