Literacy

In reading, we will be continuing Module B of

Unit 1 in ReadyGen. In this module, the big idea

continues to be “Depending on Each Other”,

however we will be reading non-fiction texts

such as Rachel Carson: Pioner of Ecology,

Rainforest Food Chains and Pale Male. This

module’s essential question is “How do readers

identify relationships and interactions in texts?”

Students will be exposed to new vocabulary,

have text based discussions, form opinions

based on a text and identify the relationships

among scientific concepts.

In writing, students will work on informative

essays. They will practice developing a topic

with facts, definitions, concrete details, and

quotations from their texts. The essential

question for this module is “How do writers group

information logically with supporting details?”

Students will examine a topic and convey the

ideas with facts in an essay.

Math

This month, students will be learning how to

divide by a one digit divisior. In this chapter,

students will relate division to multiplication and

use different division strategies such as the

distributive property and partial quotients. They

will be challenged as they learn to interpret

remainders and solve complex division word

problems. By the end of the chapter, students

should be able to answer the essential question

“What strategies can be used to divide whole

numbers?” In each lesson, students will build

upon their understanding of this question, by

answering rigorous questions, dicussing the

strategies they used and by being exposed to

varies pathways to the answer!

Science

For November, students will continue to study the

nature of science and how scientists use the scientific

method. We will be working on a lab in class and

students will need to use their notes to create a lab

report. Be aware that this assignment is worth a test

grade. It will be posted on EDMODO at the end of the

experiment and must be completed on EDMODO for

homework. Having access to technology, and

becoming comfortable using it, is an important part of

the science curriculum. Students will then start an

engineering project using up-cycling. Up-cycling is the

term for repurposing things that would normally be

thrown out or recycled.

REMINDER: All students should be logging into

EDMODO regularly to check for and hand in

assignments; ask questions to our class communities;

and participate in discussions. Parents should create a

parent account using their child’s parent code

located on their child's home screen for each group

they belong.

Social Studies

This month, students will complete Unit One of the

Social Studies text and be learning all about European

exploration. They will be introduced to influentail

explorers such as Ferninand Magellan, Chrisopher

Columbus and others who bravely sailed the ocean in

persuit of a sea route to Asia. In this unit, students will

critically think about the struggles and motivations the

explorers were faced with. They will particpate in text

based conversatiions and complete content related

projects to enhance their learning!
