RISING ABOVEthe status quo

If you’ve ever thought of visiting a vineyard but haven’t gone yet, fall is the perfect time of year to enjoy the fruits of the vine. Grape harvest time in the Northern Hemisphere is from August to October. The weather is comfortable and there is lots going on at the vineyards to see and do. You may want to plan your visit based on the wine you prefer to sip. In the U.S., for example, certain varieties reach peak ripeness at different times of the year. If you’re a fan of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, or Chardon-nay, head to the vineyards in September. Chenin Blanc, Merlot, and Syrah tend to peak closer to October. And big, rich Cabernet ripens October through November. Believe it or not, prior to the 20th century, most of America’s wine grapes were grown in the Midwest. It’s no surprise that today, however, California is the nation’s wine leader, producing 90 percent of the wine grapes grown in the U.S. Napa and Sonoma are the pinnacle of wine country on the West Coast. However, things are changing: Wineries are popping up and gaining in popularity around the country, from Washington state and Oregon, to Long Island and upstate New York. Wine grapes are now grown in all but

four states in the nation, according to Snooth.com. Seems there is a variety of grape that grows well in almost every climate in the United States. There are now some 3,000 wineries in the U.S., making it the 4th largest producer of wine in the world. That means ample opportunity for you to stop in at a winery near you or visit one the next time you’re vacationing. Manywineaficionadoshavetheirfavorite variety of vino, whether it’s red, white, blush, or sparkling. But it’s always good to remember that certain wines go best with certain foods. Gone are the hard and fast rules that red wine should be paired with beef and white should be paired with chicken and seafood. A good rule of thumb: Try rosé with hors d’oeuvres; non-oaky whites (think Sauvignon Blanc) with citrusy meals; and reds with steaks and rich tomato-based dishes. Bottom line? If it makes your meal taste better, you’ve found a perfect pairing. And don’t forget to store your wine appropriately.Althoughonlythefinestand rarest of wines truly need to be cellared for a length of time, it is still important to store your wine the right way to keep it tasting its best. Try to keep it stored at a consistent

temperature (the perfect temp is 45 to 65 degrees, but don’t fret if it’s not exact). However, note that extreme changes in heat or cold could affect the taste of the wine. Also, try to keep it out of direct sunlight, which can also alter the flavor.Ifyouaren’tluckyenoughtohaveyour own wine cellar, look for a cool, dark place in your home to store your wine or consider a wine cooler as a nice addition to your kitchen. CHEERS!

Ingredients:1/4 lb Tomatillos, quartered1/2 c water1 garlic clove2 Serrano chiles1/4 tsp salt1/4 tsp pepper1/3 c cilantro leaves, loosely packed2 chicken breasts1 c chicken stock, additional chicken stock may be needed1 c vegetable oil8 corn tortillas1 c sour cream1 lb Mozzarella cheese, gratedLightly salted water

Recipe:Boil tomatillos in water with garlic, chiles, salt and pepper until soft, about 15 to 20 minutes. Puree cooked sauce in blender to liquefy. While blending, add washed cilantro leaves; set aside. The sauce yield is about two and a half cups. It will thicken upon standing and you may need to thin with chicken stock.

Simmer chicken in lightly salted water until tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Cool. Chicken will be slightly under-cooked. Shred cooked chicken and then, just prior to serving, heat in one cup chicken stock. This will heat chicken without cooking.

In medium skillet, heat oil to 300 degrees. Pass tortillas into hot oil for a few seconds to soften and seal. Remove carefully and set aside between paper towels. Do this just prior to assembly.

Fill softened tortillas with shredded chicken and one to two tablespoons of sauce. Roll up and place seam side down in casserole. Pour green sauce over top and garnish with sour cream and cheese. Place in 375 degree oven for 5 to 8 minutes or just long enough to melt cheese.

Luxury Real Estate Marketplace

REAL ESTATECorner

The luxury real estate market is typically definedaspropertiespricedat$1millionand above. This market has recently shown substantial growth due to an improved global economy and surging stock market prices. Forbes Magazine notes that the wealth of the world’s billionaires in 2014 totals$6.4trillion–anumberlargerthanany year previously calculated. Since the number of wealthy individuals grew to the highest levels ever, the pool of potential luxury home buyers also grew. According to the National Association of Realtors, three types of buyers have emerged as key contributors to the recent surge in luxury real estate sales:

LOCAL MOVE-UP BUYERS Low interest rates and an improved economy have motivated local buyers

to “move-up” and this has resulted in stiff competitionintheentry-level$1millionprice point in many markets.

MILLENNIAL BUYERS Clientele for luxury real estate is beginning to skew to the younger generation.“Millennials”–usuallydefined asthosebornafter1980–comprisedagrowingsegmentof$1million-plushomepurchasers in 2013. The fact that real estate is a more secure investment and ahedgeagainstinflationmotivated millennial buyers. In addition, Millennials are motivated by luxury real estate because it is an investment that can be enjoyed and appreciated. AsurveyofaffluentindividualsintheUSshowed that 57% of wealthy young buyers are considering the purchase of a

residence in the next 12 months compared to only 21% of those aged 45 and older.

OVERSEAS BUYERS The overseas buyer typically wants to invest in stable markets and currency favorable locations, especially at the higher price points, which often means investing in “trophy” homes (unique, extremely high-end properties) outside of their resident countries. Because of the low inventory in the luxury real estate market, builders have alsore-enteredtheluxurymarket– especially the luxury condo market. A new trend in luxury condominium buildingis“limitededition”properties–properties that have a limited number of units and offer very exclusive amenities. These limited edition

properties have proven very popular and often times sell out before the entire condo community has even been built. With the continued bullish economy, and as long as the stock market suffers no major setback, the outlook for the luxury real estate market looks favorable for the remainder of 2014 and for several years to come.
