The Sarasota County Branch NAACP presented JFCS the 2015 President’s Award at the Thirtieth Annual Freedom Awards Banquet on

October 8th. The prestigious Freedom Awards are presented to individuals, organizations and businesses that have significantly contributed to furthering the local and national goals of the NAACP.

The NAACP advocates for issues of concern to all Americans and takes a proactive stance to increase the public’s awareness of impediments to freedom, assaults upon civil rights and barriers to equality. Its programs are designed to ensure compliance with civil rights laws, equitable treatment of all Americans under law, the attainment of educational excellence, access to health care and economic empowerment. New Community Collaboration Benefits Children, Families and Veterans

JFCS hosted a Sweet Success Party this fall in recognition of a new collaboration between three local agencies: JFCS, Harvest House and Mothers Helping Mothers; and national distribution

organization K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers. Conceived by Sheila Birnbaum, the goal of the program is to provide basic items needed by individuals served at the three partnering agencies in order for them to get back

on their feet. With the help of K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers, JFCS, Harvest House, and Mothers Helping Mothers will receive and distribute goods such as clothes, towels, blankets, and books to help children, families and veterans in need. This program was funded by a grant from The Z Foundation through The Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

Seniors Attend JFCS Programs Thanks to New Handicapped Accessible Van

Thanks to a grant from the Charlotte P. Graver Fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, homebound seniors and their caregivers who attend the weekly Senior Outreach

Services Program at JFCS have a new handicapped accessible van to transport them every Wednesday and Friday to the agency’s main

campus on Fruitville Road. “Several years ago I met a man who attended the SOS program at JFCS and he told me how important this program was to him and how he looked forward to getting out and being with people. I know how much my own mother benefited from the supportive senior services she received in NY and this van will ensure that seniors here in Sarasota will have the same opportunity to socialize, receive therapy and maintain a community connection,” stated Charlotte Graver. Pamela Baron, Director of Senior Services noted, “Thanks to this gift, our seniors won’t be asking the question: How will

I get to JFCS? But rather, asking a different question: When will the van be here to pick me up?” If you or a loved one is interested in learning more about the supportive senior services available through JFCS, please contact Pamela Baron, MSW, Director of Senior Services at 941-366-2224 or by email [email protected]

Sharsheret Supports Program for Women with Breast Cancer

Sharsheret, Hebrew for “chain”, is a national not-for-profit organization supporting women and their families, of all Jewish backgrounds, facing breast cancer. The mission of Sharsheret

is to offer a community of support to women diagnosed with breast cancer or at increased genetic risk, by fostering culturally-relevant individualized connections with networks of peers, health professionals, and related resources. JFCS recently joined the national Sharsheret Supports program to raise awareness and support these women and their families.

The new support program will be led by Jewish Healing Program Coordinator, Jennifer Singer, MAJE. “I am excited to offer such a comforting service to women and their families so they can connect

to resources in our community. As a breast cancer survivor, I have experienced first-hand the frustrations and struggles. This partnership will allow JFCS to provide a lifeline to other women so they don’t have to face the diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer alone,” stated Jennifer. In partnership with Sharsheret, JFCS will provide access to national breast cancer resources, including culturally-relevant resource materials, local support groups, educational classes and conferences, and community surveys.

For more information, please contact Jennifer Singer, Jewish Healing Program coordinator at 941-366-2224, ext. 166 or e-mail [email protected]. You can also visit the Sharsheret website at www.sharsheret.org.

We are asking all of our friends, donors and volunteers to support JFCS and its Emma’s Dream Team Program offered at Emma E. Booker Elementary School, a Title I

school in Sarasota. Emma’s Dream Team is unique in its delivery of services: focusing on prevention and intervention of behavioral issues and a special sensory approach of redirecting students physically and emotionally that helps them maintain self-control in the classroom. The goal of Emma’s Dream Team is to improve coping and social skills, reduce disruptive behavior and out-of-school suspension for at-risk

elementary school students. With a full-time JFCS therapist providing counseling and sensory services to the students and trained volunteers serving as mentors and tutors, last year 57 children were helped. This year JFCS will be able to serve 80 children with the addition of a part-time counselor.

Check out our website www.JFCS-Cares.org for updates and links to make a donation to JFCS on #GivingTuesday. And please invite your friends and family to join you by supporting JFCS and its Emma’s Dream Team Program.

On Tuesday, December 1st you can join the national #GivingTuesday campaign and help JFCS expand its services to at-risk elementary school children in our community!

With your support, JFCS will help make dreams come true for the children of our Emma’s Dream Team. We Can’t Do It Without You!
