The Mar Health Park of Barcelona is born
Last February 1, 2010, the Mar Health Park of Barcelona was founded. The Mar
Health Park is a new organiza tion that replaces the IMAS in the supply of public health services. The new Park is one of the most dynamic poles of knowledge in healthcare, academia and research in Barcelona and Catalonia. Its main characteristic is the diversity of its healthcare services: acute patients, social medical care, mental health and primary assistance. The research of the park is provided by IMIM, a centre linked to Hospital del Mar and located at the PRBB, which is a national and international reference in the field of biomedical re search, where high level competitive
research is developed with the participation of national and international researchers and clinical doctors of different disciplines, most of them, coming from Hospital del Mar. The Mar Health Park Consortium is a new legal entity that adjusts to the current legislation by granting all its competencies in the health sector to the Ministry of Health of the Government of Catalonia. In the Consortium, the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat, 60%) and the Barcelona city council (40%) take part. The governing council, chaired by the autonomic minister Marina Geli and composed of six representatives from the Generalitat and four from the Barcelona city council, appointed Jaume Reventós as director and Mercedes Ribalta as secretary, during the Park’s constitutive session
Reforming the law of patronage
At a time when rivers of ink are written on the urgency of involving
the private sector in R&D, the scant philanthropic support received by the scientific system in our country becomes a focal point. One reason for this low support is the current law of patronage. In Spain, individual donations receive a tax relief of 25% or 35% of corporation tax in the case of companies, whereas in France these conditions are 66 and 60%, respectively. We want a tax system like the French one! The Foundation Pasqual Maragall has obtained temporary exceptional tax profits for the 2011 International Alzheimer's event organized together with the Fundación Reina Sofía. Previously, these tax benefits were only awarded to sporting or cultural events. It is therefore the first time they are granted to a scientific initiative and that precedent can not remain a mere anecdote. The modernization of the patronage law in force in Spain is therefore urgent. Many voices are claiming it.

“We are recognised for our studies on PARP2”
It’s been about three years that José Yelamos directs the research group on poly (ADPribose) polymerase (PARP) in
the cancer program at IMIMHospital del Mar. The group consists of a technician, two PhD students and one postdoctoral researcher. They investigate this family of polymerases of 17 members. These enzymes function in the cell nucleus by adding molecules of ADPribose to proteins such as histones (proteins that bind DNA and help to maintain its structure), transcription factors (that bind DNA to control gene expression) or DNA repair proteins. This modification transitorily changes the function of these proteins. For example, in the case of histones, it adds a negative charge that produces repulsion with the DNA, which will cause an opening of chromatin.
The importance of understanding PARP
The interaction of PARP with the DNA repair proteins is of special interest for the group, especially in the context of diversification of the immune system. To generate receptors capable of recognizing any antigen, lymphocytes must undergo a genetic rearrangement that requires a DNA breakage followed by repair. PARP proteins are activated in

Aquestes funcions específiques poden ser rellevants a nivell clínic. Existeixen inhibidors farmacològics de PARP en assaigs
response to that DNA damage and are involved in the recruitment of the repair proteins. The lab also studies the role of PARP in the epigenetic modifications that take place during the ontogeny of B and T lymphocytes. The group focuses particularly on PARP1 and 2. These have some redundant functions, but each has also its own specific functions. "Some years ago we demonstrated that PARP2 but not PARP1 is important for the development of thymocytes", points out Yelamos. These specific functions may be important at the clinical level. Currently there are pharmacological PARP inhibitors which are used in clinical trials in different tumours, because they block specific routes of DNA repair. But these drugs affect the entire family of PARP proteins and it is important to define the specific functions of PARP1 and 2 in order to seek more effective and specific inhibitors. The group uses both mouse models and genomics and proteomics studies. In par ticular they are interested in studying proteinprotein interactions and to discover in which molecular complexes PARP1 and 2 are included. In order to computationally study the protein networks where PARP1 and 2 interact, the group has planned to collaborate with Baldomero Oliva (GRIB: IMIMUPF).
Looking for a therapeutic target
In collaboration with the oncology group of Joan Albanell (IMIMHospital del Mar), the lab is beginning to study the expression of PARP2 in different tumours in order to find out if this could be used as a tumour marker and as a potential therapeutic target. Besides the internal collaborations within the PRBB, the group collaborates with other groups in Spain (Hospital Clinic and Madrid), France, and Austria. "Our greatest contributions to the field of PARP have been on PARP2, a fact by which we are internationally recognized. We have characterized the PARP2 knockout and have shown its fundamental role in the development of thymocytes", concludes Yelamos

An endogenous peptide is implicated in the smoking relapse
Hypocretins are neuron modulator proteins located in the hypothalamus neurons and so far they have
been related to the energetic metabolism, the regulation of digestion and the wakefulness period, as well as with the reward mechanisms and addictions. A research group of the Neuropharmacology Laboratory at the CEXSUPF directed by Rafael Maldonado, together with scientists at Stanford University, has discovered that hypocretins are involved in the smoking relapse after an abstinence period. Specifically, hypocretins modulate the effects that nicotine exerts over anxiety by interacting with

Most of the proteins that are released by cells follow a wellknown classical pathway of secre

the vasopressin neurons of the hypothalamus and with the corticotropin releasing factors (CRF). Corticotropin is a peptide involved in the response to stress. Therefore the CRF and the hypocretins act independently but complementarily. This has significant implications when thinking of designing a therapeutic strategy based on blocking
the action of both peptides in order to avoid the smoking relapse. The study has been published in the Journal of Neuroscience and is a part of the doctoral thesis that Ainhoa PlazaZabala is doing under the direction of Fernando Berrendero.
Contamination accelerates the atherosclerosis process
It has been proven scientifically for the first time that atmospheric pollution accelerates the atherosclero
sis process by more than double its average evolution and, therefore, it increases the chances of suffering a heart attack or cerebrovascular accident. This was demonstrated by researchers at the Environmental Epidemiology Research Centre (CREAL), jointly with Swiss scientists and researchers from
California, in a study which was just published in the magazine PLoS ONE. The study concluded that people living within 100 metres of a motorway or a busy road with high traffic levels suffer from an acceleration in the growth of the plaques of their arteries of 5.5 micrometres per year, or over double the average annual growth. According to Xavier Basagaña, a CREAL researcher and participant in this study, “these results are extremely significant, considering the relevance of atherosclerosis in western countries”

Descrita una nova via de secreció de proteïnesproteins that follow an unconventional pathway not yet well understood. The CRG group led by Vivek Malhotra has published a paper in the Journal of Cell Biology which describes the nonconventional secretion of the yeast protein Acb1. Acb1 is captured by an autophagosome, a vesicle which normally captures molecules to degrade them. But in this case, the autophagosome transports the Acb1 protein to the cell membrane so it can be released. "Working with yeast has allowed us to do genetic analysis to describe the Acb1 secretion pathway, which is highly conserved. Understanding it is of great importance for human diseases", says Juan Duran, the first author of the article. In

No he rebut cap tracte diferent per ser dona.
“We need to change the immovable vision of universities and research centres”
When did you first feel the passion for science?
It just came along. I studied Biology and I liked the mixture between reasoning and creativity that is science.
After your PhD you went abroad, why? There weren’t so many laboratories here at the time; there was no choice, we all left when we finished our PhD. I think it’s a fantastic personal experience.
What made you return to Barcelona?I heard about a different public university, the UPF, and about a new project, the PRBB, and it sounded interesting. Now I’m delighted to be part of this adventure.
What’s your opinion about research in Ca-talonia, compared with abroad?
Maruxa Martínez-Campos
I m’encanta donar classes.
It’s improving, but there’s still a lot to do. Here there are isolated places where science is done in good conditions, but in general, both infrastructures and human resources are lacking. Conditions need to improve in order to recruit the best scientists and change de hierarchical and fixed vision that still prevails in some universities and re search centres.
What would you advice to someone that is thinking of doing research? If they are really motivated, they should just go for it. Research isn’t just another job, it needs a certain degree of passion. It has a lot of advantages but without motivation and enthusiasm, it could be frustrating.
How do you combine research with tea-ching? Here at the UPF it is possible, the educational burden is less than in other universities. I love teaching. You have to put very specific know ledge into perspective.
For a long time you have collaborated in outreach projects.Yes, I think that scientists must help bring science closer to society. Every day there are more challenges about which citizens have to take decisions, so it’s necessary for society to be well informed.
What has been your experience as a wo-man in the scientific world?I don’t think that I’ve received a different treatment just because I’m a woman. But it’s clear that a lot of women do their PhD and very few make it to group leaders.
And what is the reason? There isn’t a unique reason. For one, the period in which one has to be most productive coincides with women’s biological clock, and there isn’t much help to conciliate high level research with maternity. And we live in a society with an acquired sexist behaviour, even from women. It is also true that, in order to be successful in research, one must be very competitive or even aggressive. A lot of women don’t feel comfortable with this; the challenge will be to introduce different behaviours in the research world

Pluripotent cells from adipose tissue
Researchers from the Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMRB), along with colleagues
from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (USA), as well as from Kyoto University and from the Research Division of the company ASTELLAS Pharma, both located in Japan, have demonstrated the feasibility of inducing pluripotency to cells of the fatty tissue both in mouse and in humans. BIANA allows creating protein interaction networks of the proteins stored in the database, regardless of their species of origin, and making predictions based on sequence homology or common structural domains. The result is the identification of proteins susceptible to become good therapeutic targets. The potential of this new bioinformatics tool is great. For example, BIANA could identify therapeutic targets to combat diseases such as Alzheimer's or diabetes

Long term evolution is more than a sum of individual mutations
Researchers of the CRG led by Fyodor Kondrashov, along with colleagues at the University of
Michigan, have published in the journal Nature the first scientific demonstration of the theory of compensatory evolution proposed by the Japanese
biologist Motoo Kimura 25 years ago. This theory proposes that harmful or deleterious mutations can also play an important role in evolution. Darwin's theory describes evolution as a gradual process caused by an accumulation of consecutive mutations of small impact where each mutation gives an adaptive advantage or, at least, is not harmful. The scientists have compared a segment of the secondary structure of mitochondrial transfer RNA (tRNA) in 83 mammalian species. "We have seen that some deleterious mutations are not necessarily evolutionary dead ends. As the evolutionary unit is an entire population, rather than the individual, we can even find in the population, for a short time, two individually deleterious mutations that, when combined, are benign and can provide novel paths for evolution", explains Kondrashov

higher efficiency and speed than those obtained with fibroblasts. In addition, scientists have found that the adipose cells express intrinsically high levels of pluripotency factors. This means that the cellular reprogramming could be done in the absence of xenobiotics. These are elements derived from species other than human or mouse and which can alter the cell culture and the reprogramming. This represents a major advance for the possible use of human fat, a very abundant tissue, as a source for cellular regeneration and for the repair of organs and tissues, according to researchers. The study was published in the journal PNAS in February

Studying memory
The memory is a fascinating brain function: what we are and what we do greatly depends on it.
In the deepest part of the brain a structure exists that has special relevance for memory, the hippocampus. The hippocampus acts as a gateway that allows the recording of memory in the cerebral
cortex. When it is definitely injured, the person ceases to form new memories but he or she is still able to recall what was already recorded. This fact is sometimes difficult to understand: how patients are able to remember things from their youth but unable to remember what they did the previous day. Memory highlights a general biological principle: any behaviour of an organism is the result of a hierarchical organization: molecules, synapses, neurons, neural circuits, connections between circuits, and ultimately behaviour. This whole organization changes constantly through the experiences that we live. Creating memories is the result of certain connections (synapses) of the cerebral cortex. With so many actors involved we can say that, like memory, research on memory requires the same cooperation to work, and it is necessarily multidisciplinary

Finding Jagged1 in tumor tissues
In this image, obtained by Verónica Rodilla (IMIM) in the confocal microscopy service of the UPF, we can see a section
of the intestine of a mouse with cancer, with Jagged1 (green) and cell nuclei (red) labelled. Jagged1 is a ligand of the Notch pathway that is normally anchored to the membrane. When the Notch receptor binds Jagged1, this ligand loses its membrane localization and goes into the cell. The Notch pathway is crucial in the proliferation and differentiation of cells in many tissues and it is involved in many tumour processes. In this case, the image shows how normal epithelial cells of the intestine express Jagged1 in the membrane (arrow), while its distribution changes to the inside of the cell in the tumour tissue (asterisk), as a result of the activation of the Notch pathway

Safety in the laboratory
During the Conference about Health and Safety in Biomedical Research Centres in February 2010 the "Manual of Preventive Information in Biomedical Research" (MPI) was distributed among the PRBB residents. The different authors explain the
importance of this guide and what goals they have for the future.
Jordi Ruiz (IATCRC)
“The MPI is the answer to the questions and doubts of the laboratory staff related to their workplace hazards and how to prevent them. In this technical, simple and specific manual users can find everything from the type of glove to be used in the handling of a reagent to the hood needed to work with a specific biological agent. The manual is an initiative of a working group formed by the prevention members from the centres of the PRBB.”
“From July 2007, a working group formed by the prevention members of the centres of the PRBB is working together with the goal of standardizing the prevention guidelines and behaviours in the whole Park. The researchers have participated in it by transmitting their daily difficulties in terms of security in the lab. An example of what has been achieved is that many laboratories have replaced the use of ethidium bromide by a non mutagenic product. This change is significant when it comes to ensuring occupational health in a laboratory.”
Sergi Jarque (UPF)
“With the MPI ready for printing, we decided to supplement its content with some specialized seminars that could enrich the subjects contained in the document. The project was first conceived in late 2008 and it has become a reality this February. After many efforts, the Conferences about Health and Safety in Biomedical Research Centres have been held, the first of their kind organized in Catalonia and which allowed attendees to pose their questions to renowned specialists.”
“The conferences have left us with two points to consider. The most negative one is the low participation of the staff from most institutions. This demonstrates that
the prevention members must continue working together to increase the prevention behaviour in our day to day work. The good news is the goodwill shown at all levels to organize events like this one, which allow answering the concerns of the staff in our institutions.”
Rosabel Marrugat (CMRB)
“The longterm objectives of the prevention members of the centres of PRBB are to keep on working together and making sure that PRBB residents are aware of the importance of working in safe conditions. We are convinced that with everyone’s collaboration we will manage to establish a culture of prevention. We are planning to make a version of the MPI for all personnel working with computer screens and some more preventive instructions to facilitate daily work in laboratories.”
Another robot at the PRBB. On Thursday February 18, the ReemH robot was lending a hand to the PRBB reception staff. The company PalRobotics, which has its R+D centre in Barcelona, chose the Park to test its new prototype. For three hours ReemH interacted with the people going in and out of the building. Through a touch screen, REEMH provided information
about the PRBB and about PalRobotics. After Asimo, REEMH is the second humanoid robot that visits the PRBB.
