Dialogism and Popular Culture: The Hannibal TV seriesThe NBC psychological thriller-horror series Hannibal (2013-2015), is an adaptation of Thomas Harriss tetralogy focusing on a serial murder. Praised for its script, filming techniques, cinematic rhetoric and the actors performances alike, the series is a complex popular culture artifact. Rich in intertextual references to a wide range of texts from philosophical treatise through the arts and the Bible to fairy tales, Hannibal focuses on topics such as the nature of God, of man, the idea of becoming while the main conflict reminds us of G.W.F. Hegels master-slave dialectic. Intertwined with ominous fairy tale elements, such as Bluebeard, and references to artists like William Blake, this series is a school example of Bakhtinian dialogism. Therefore, we propose to read Hannibal in terms of its intertextual references and analyze how these operate within its main conflict.
