    When fashion director Juliana

    Schiavinatto w as planning

the shoots for this issue, she

had one request. “I w ant to

    shoot with real dinosaurs,

she said. “I like the irony and

    juxtaposition of exploring

the future by looking to the

past. Any ideas on w here w e

    could shoot?” “G ive m e a

few days, I said. I then called

the Royal Tyrrell M useum of

    Palaeontology in Drum heller,

Alta., to see if they’d be keen

on having their w orld-fam ous

    dinos featured in a fashion

spread. It w as a first for

    them —and definitely a first

for us, shooting our m odel

    Rachel M acK night beside

    the fam ous Albertos urus

    We invited three bloggers

into our EL LEC anadaC loset

to take on a style challenge

w ith our top spring picks

    from N ordstrom . C heck out

    “Fashion M ath” (page 5 0).

    During the shoot, I raided

the racks for this m onth’s

EDITOR S POV  A large part of m y job as an editor involves trying to predict the future. “What’s next, and how do I get therefirst?” is the question I’m always trying to answer. This m onth, I can say w ith confidence that up-and-com ers M atilda L utz above and

j As is inevitable w hen you’re talk-

ing to the star of a horror m ovie, the

conversation first turns to things L utz

is afraid of— open w ater, being in a

forest in the dark and bees (ever since

she w as sw arm ed w hile on a scooter in

G reece)— and then it turns to the things

she doesn’t fear (at least not anym ore),

    like free-falling out of a plane: “I w as

really scared of flying w hen I w as little,

but I recently w ent skydiving, and it w as

the best experience of m y life. You’re

present like you’ve never felt before. You’re just thinking of you being in the

of relentless optim ism that Am erica w as

built on, L utz nam es the thing that scares

m ost of us silly: w hat lies ahead. “It’s not

useful to panic about the future. I have

it in a satiricaland playfulw ay.”

    IT’S LIKE W E’RE AT A PLACE W ITH SO-

    JUST CELEBRITIES AND ARTISTS—FEELS

LIKE TH EY HAVE TO PRESENT A PER-

them selves as a product for sale.

     You’re m arketing a retouched

version of your life on Facebook.

People’s self-w orth and identity are

m easured by how m any likes they

    get,and they’re seeing allthese pic-

     Wondered and they’re like,‘I don’t

W HERE DO YOU THINK W E GO FROM

    HERE? “T hat’s w hat I’m trying to

figure out! T hat’s the job of art:to

be a m irror and hold up the currentreality of culture so w e can take a

    step back.I don’t think there’s that

m uch reflection happening anym ore

in society— even artists aren’t sitting

    and thinking,because w e spend 70

percent of our tim e m arketing our

    art so w e can m ake a living.What

    if I had m ore tim e to spend on m y

    m usic and m y art and m y w riting?

    Instead,I’m fighting for attention

because of this ADD culture.I just

think there needs to be a m om ent of

    M onica Heisey has

    a new “crystal clear”

    take on life.

    ’m into crystals now. I’m sure I don’t need to m ake

this announcem ent— you’ve probably all gathered

from Instagram — but som etim es you just have to

shout your bliss from the rooftops, or at least m ake it

Facebook O fficial. So, w ithout further ado, ladies and

gentlem en, M om and Dad, close friends and that guy I

    m et w hen I w orked at a restaurant one sum m er w hom I

can’t seem to rem em ber to unfriend: I’m into crystals now

This has been a really exciting journey for m e. It began

over a w eek ago, w hen I started follow ing a bunch of

C alifornia-based gift shops on Tum blr. Frankly, it w as love

at first saginite. It w asn’t long before I w as seeing crystals

everyw here: at hip vintage stores and artisanal ceram ic

w orkshops, dangling delicately from the sw anlike necks

of hip urban florists. T he pull of the crystals seem ed om ni-

present— the shining sacred rocks purifying the air and

    m aking m e think “C ool.”

I w as draw n to them by a pow er you m ight call “m ys-

tical.” Suddenly, m y energy w as focused on a priority in

    m y life that hadn’t previously been there: healing m y aura

    in a w ay that m ade m e look very, very cool. I started w ith

a sm ooth, curved orb of rose quartz. I’m not a sucker—

    I didn’t fall for that cutesy carved-into-a-heart-shape-

    and-then-m arked-up-thirty-dollars bit. O h, no. I paid a

reasonable $20 for a hunk of pink rock designed to attract

unconditional love and self-love. And, you know, I think

it w orked I definitely love m yself m ore in m y new life as

    a Person W ho’s into C rystals than I did in m y old life as

Som eone Less C ool. It has been very healing.

    M y next purchase w as a classic: O w ning a large hunk

of am ethyst brought peace, stability and “psychic sobri-

ety” to m y life w ithout m y even having to learn w hat

psychic sobriety m eans C rystals have really opened m y

eyes to the energies em anating from nature and the fact

that you can just buy cool stuff if you w ant to seem cool-

er. In the past, I used to w orry about not looking trendy

and in the know on social m edia; I w ould overthink it and

w ork m yself into a frenzy before posting a desperate pic-

ture of m y face— w ithout even a hint of im pressive rocks.

Now, I just get a m anicure and then reach for a piece of

hem atite and hold it in a beam of sunlight against a w hite

w all. Sim ply holding the anti-stress stone blocks all that

negative energy, so I can take a m ystical photo and post it

along w ith a bunch of shooting-star em ojis.

The skeptics am ong you m ight be thinking “You sound

    like a caftan-w earing, rosé-drinking L os Angeles divor-

cee.” To w hich I say “T hank you, that is exactly w hat I’m

going for ” In m y apartm ent, I’ve even set up a num ber of

different altars to bohem ian-looking thin w om en w ho

probably ow n crystals and are therefore heroes.

T he citrine-head lifestyle is not for everyone, but it has

im pacted m e in w ays I can’t really explain. Is it the healing

properties of these m agical stones? Is it that I have discov-

ered you can literally buy free-spiritedness? Is it that lapis

lazuli is the m ost beautiful and expensive paperw eight I’ve

ever ow ned? T hat’s not for m e to say. I am a princess of

the New Age, and there is no turning back. Now, can I

interest you in a tourm aline?

     RE O

IGGY AZALEA MAY E ONE of the m ost polariz-ing figures in the m usic industry today. Since releasing her

first album ,T he New lassic, in 2014, the 25-year-old

Australian has proudly defended her right to be a w hite

fem ale rapper. In doing so, she has am assed a legion of

devoted fans w ho have been interacting on social m edia

w ith the m usician alm ost daily since her early days produc-

ing m ixtapes. Shortly after releasing T he New lassic, her

singles “F ancy” and “Problem ” held the num ber one and

num ber tw o spots sim ultaneously on the Billboard Hot

100 chart. FY I, no artist has been able to achieve this feat

since the Beatles.) She has also received industry praise over

the past tw o years in the form of four G ram m y nom ina-

tions, tw o Am erican M usic Aw ards and three Billboard

    M usic Aw ards.

As all of this w as happening, how ever, an em otionally

charged debate about race, gender and the socio-political

state of the hip-hop scene w as also heating up. By m id-

2015, the conversation engulfed Azalea w hen her public

feud w ith rapper Azealia Banks w ent viral. In the w ake

of protests in Ferguson, M o., N ew York and Baltim ore,

M d., Banks called her out for not com m enting, tw eeting her

“Black C ulture is cool, but black issues sure aren’t, huh?”

The w idely respected rapper Q -Tip jum ped in shortly after

w ith a series of tw eets aim ed at Azalea, inform ing her about

the history of hip hop, w hile the hacker group Anonym ous

threatened to leak nudes of the m usician if she didn’t apolo-

gize for m isappropriating black culture.

There w ere also the w eirder controversies, like w hen

Azalea publicly fought w ith the pizza chain Papa John’s on

Tw itter after she gave a delivery m an her phone num ber

and began receiving calls from his fam ily m em bers. By the

end of last year, Azalea had cancelled her tour, abandoned

social m edia and retreated from the spotlight.

But on the eve of her second album release,Digital

Distortion, Azalea says she’s ready for another go-round

at the rap gam e. This tim e, how ever, m uch of her bravado

w hich fuelled the controversies) seem s to have faded.

Instead, she’s in a m ore reflective and even regretful m ood.

Over the phone late one Friday evening from her L .A.

hom e, Azalea openly discussed her conflicted relationship

w ith social m edia, her unapologet
