Elk's Tale

Hello to All. Welcome to Summer! The Lodge is busy and keeping active. On the business side, lunches continue to do well. The budget was proposed, accepted and is based upon the new Grand Lodge format. Much work was spent in developing the new format and Bob McCabe, along with the Finance Committee, are to be recognized for their contributions. Bookings for our ballroom continue with great interest and subscription. Repairs and maintenance have in-cluded carpet cleaning and kitchen steam cleaning, recently completed. The Florida State Elks convention is in late May and our Treasurer, Secretary and myself are attending. The Elks National Convention will be in July in New Orleans which I will be gratefully attending.

The Master Calendar of activities for the year is all but completed. Many events are forthcoming and, as is always the case, be prepared to volunteer your time which is the thrust in making events fun and successful.

The recent horse race events, Derby and Preakness, were fun and profit-able for some! If you missed The Mother's Day Brunch and Blue Angels

Angels, you missed a treat. (Word has it the cooks may make another appearance soon). Two Open Houses were held for members to meet and greet new officers and receive updated information about the Lodge. The ER even sprung for cocktails! A full field of golfers (144+) from the District enjoy-ed good weather and hospitality after golf at our Lodge. Jack Houlihan did a great job!

Check the calendar for future activ-ities and plan to attend. Remember that another Lodge Open House will occur in conjunction with our Fourth Annual Fathers Day Car Show, June 15th, 10-2 PM. The Car Show will feature Classic, Antique, Special Interest vehicles, Rock and Roll music, awards, raffle and 50/50. Food will be available and

the Lodge will be open all day.

I will see you at the Lodge, socializ-ing, enjoying a meal, or volun-teering for an event. As always -- Elkdom first; Social second, while having fun!!

Keep well,

ELKS FACTS

Did You Know...

Nestled among Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, Bedford, one of the early settlements in America, is filled with beauty and a rich tapestry of history. Of all the fascinating and interesting places to visit in Bedford, the Elks National Home and Retirement Center, is definitely a center of attraction, es-pecially at Christmas time. Thousands of visitors drive through the grounds during the Holiday season to witness the beautiful displays of colored lights and decorations.

The Elks National Home was first established in 1903 and offers independent and assisted living in a variety of accom-modations. Our grand, historical home has just announced that it is now accepting applications for residency from anyone, not just Elk Members. But there are financial benefits if an applicant has been an Elk member for at least three years and is currently in good standing.

If you are in the area, they welcome visits and offer tours.

ELKS INAUGURAL AUTISM CAMP

The Elks of Vero Beach Lodge 1774 and its members are stepping up, once again, this year to shine a light to help bring awareness by putting together for the first time a special week this summer for kids with autism. We will be sending a child with autism and a parent to our Florida Elks Youth Camp for 5 days. We will provide transportation and a week of activities designed for them and their family member. This will truly be a special time for these kids to spend with their mom or dad, and also be able to share it with other kids and parents who are facing a lot of the same challenges.

We are asking for a generous donation of $50.00 from each member to be able to pay for the transportation and the expenses to send them to camp. Anything you can give to make this happen, would be greatly appreciated. We are accepting donations at the lodge or via Paypal.

Thank you again for all that you do as our members of Elks Lodge 1774 continue to demonstrate what it means by "Elks Care and Elks Share."

Fathers INTERESTING STATISTICS...

• In 2008 there were an estimated 70.1 million fathers in the US.

• In 2012 there were 24.4 million fathers who were part of a married couple with children younger than 18, with 21% raising three or more children.

• In 2012 there were 1.96 million single fathers in the US, representing 16% of all single parents, with 9% raising three or more children younger than 18.

• In 2012 there were 189,000 stay-at-home dads with children younger than 15, who remained out of the labor force for at least one year primarily so they could care for the family while their wives worked outside the home. These fathers cared for upward of 369,000 children.

• In spring 2011, 18% of preschoolers were regularly cared for by their father while their mother's worked.

FFFlllaaaggg DDDaaayyy CCCeeerrreeemmmooonnnyyy Flag Day in the US began with Elks!

Every year, each and every Elks lodge observes June 14th as Flag Day. This tradition was instituted by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in 1907, and was later adopted by the Congress as an official observance. After three decades of state and local celebrations, many of which were sponsored by Elks Lodges, President Woodrow Wilson, on May 30, 1916, officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Finally, on August 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman, a member of the Order, permanently designated June 14 as Flag Day by signing an act of Congress. Every Elk finds deep significance in Flag Day, a day to acknowledge our great love of country, our commit-ment to the well-being of fellow citizens, and our respect for the values and ideals that our nation's banner symbolizes. The BPOE's patriotic obser-vances on Flag Day will celebrate the continuing and vital importance of Old Glory and what it means to us all.

April saw 6 new members and we received 8 inductees into membership in May. We are well on the way for another year of growth. Both Bob Carroll and Dennis Ryan continue to recover from respective surgeries and will hope-fully be "up to speed" very soon. Our sympathies are extended to the families on their loss of Debbie Cannon, Pat McEnerney, Harvey Rosenbaum and John Celli. All the best to our traveling members and friends as many are returning to their northern homes for the summer. Many thanks.

June, 2014

Page 7 Elk's Tale Vol. 20, No. 4 - June-July, 2014

Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and father figures, and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, the influence of fathers on their children's lives and in society. In the United States it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

There are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father's Day. One of these was the start of the Mother's Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held

In 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907.

A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father's Day. Her father, a Civil War Veteran, raised six children by himself after the death of their mother during childbirth. This was un-common at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. Sonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis, who had pushed for Mother's Day celebrations. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done.

Because Dodd's father was born in June, she encouraged churches in her area, Spokane, Washington, to honor fathers that month. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane in 1910. Over the years, the idea spread, and

people lobbied Congress to establish the holiday. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson, who had signed a proclamation es-tablishing Mother's Day, approved the idea, but never signed a proclamation for it. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations." But a holiday honoring fathers did not become official until 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson declared that the third Sunday in June would be Father's Day. President Richard Nixon made this proclamation permanent in 1972.

Father's Day is not a federal holiday. Organ-izations, businesses and stores choose to be open or closed.

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commem-orating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, de-claring independence from the King-dom of Great Britain (now officially known as the United Kingdom). Inde-pendence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.

Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Decla-ration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Indepen-dence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.

Although not a signer of the Declaration of

Independence, but another Founding Fa-ther who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming

the third President in a row who died on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th

President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only President to have been born on Independence Day. Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. It is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal insti-tutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at public events to praise the nation's heritage, laws, history, society, and people.

Recent Events

The new officers for the Elk's Year 2014-2015 were installed on March 28, 2014. Newly-installed Exalted Ruler Craig Waskow speaks to members for the first time. New Exalted Ruler Craig Waskow held a series of briefings to share 1 with members his goals for the coming year, to introduce the new officers, and to solicit input from the members. The briefings were attended by over three hundred members and were extreme- ly well-received. An unofficial "survey" done by this editor indicates a very favorable response and appears to have generated a renewed enthusiasm in members.

YUM - YUM! Elks honored Mothers with a delicious brunch of Eggs Benedict, potatoes and strawberries cooked by our very own Exalted Ruler Craig Waskow and a diligent crew. Approximately eighty members and guests enjoyed the brunch. Mimosas, Bloody Marys, and other refreshments were available for a reasonable price. All ladies attending received a carnation -- their choice of red or white. This was really special! And, as if the brunch were not enough... those attending were able to watch the US Navy's Blue Angels perform their incredible maneuvers and stunts while flying directly over the lodge. What a spec- tacular show! It really helped make this Mother's Day memorable!

From the Board Chair... I have been asked to write a

brief article for the Elk's Tale. I

am the current year's Chair-

man of the Board of Directors.

We meet twice a month, or

more often if needed, to manage the

financial aspects of the Lodge. We,

along with the ER Craig Waskow and

the Treasurer Bob McCabe, look over

the bills and expenses of the lodge as

well as review any requests for fund-

raisers before they are presented to

the general membership.

If there are any problems that anyone

is aware of, the meetings are open to

attend and the bills are available for

review.

This is your Lodge and we are striving

to improve it. The lodge runs on

volunteers, so please become involved

in some aspect of the lodge. The more

volunteers and more

members that attend events, the more

events that will become available. Less

"bar talk" and more positive feedback

and volunteering make for a great and

successful Lodge.

If you have a problem, don't hesitate

to contact one of us. Thank you.

Membership in our Order is a privilege that we learn to value highly as we develop in Elkdom. As Elks,

we enjoy everything that we stand for and wish to share it with friends and family. Thus, we proudly

and warmly welcome those friends and family members who have just joined our wonderful Order.

The Meaning of Membership

An Elk is an American citizen who guides his/her course in life by the cardinal principles of our order: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity!

Our programs recognize a belief in God; help children grow up healthy and drug-free; quicken the spirit of American patriotism; honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans; address unmet needs; serve our communities through benevolent programs; and cultivate good fellowship.

Vero Beach Lodge members are invited to visit the Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla, Florida on Saturday, June 7th. There will be NO cost to participating members, and lunch will be provided free of charge by the camp.

We need 40 members to participate in order to qualify for a grant to help us send some local kids to the camp this summer. Please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board by the jukebox in the lounge, or call Dan Danaher at 772/321-6100.

If you have never been, you will enjoy visiting the camp.

The Camp is dedicated to enriching the lives of children from the state of Florida. The camp staff presents a safe camp experience that contributes to each camper's mental, physical, and social growth. It is located on 405 acres of rolling hills, forests, lakes, and open space in Marion County, Florida. The camp is accredited by the American Camping Association and is recertified every three years to assure compliance and a safe camping environment for children.

The Camp features 21 cabins, each of which sleeps 9; a kitchen facility; swimming pool; golf driving range; archery; primitive camping sites; baseball; basketball; boating; ropes course; tennis; softball; a pavilion that serves as the dining hall; TV viewing area; meeting hall; and night-time activity center.

The camp opened its doors in 1991 to all of the children of Florida and has played a pivotal role in the development of many children. It offers them countless opportunities that have not previously been available to them. Their team-building skills are improved, they have access to state of the art recreational equipment, and they have a chance to enjoy themselves in a caring, social setting where the good of the children is always the priority.

We offer summer camp opportunities to any Florida child as well as Elks' children and grandchildren at a modest cost for one or two weeks. However, we don't turn away those unable to pay. Additionally, the camp is used year-round by a wide variety of organizations dedicated to enriching the lives of children in general and underprivileged and disabled children in particular.

The camp has become one of the finest of its kind in the country. It is already a facility that Florida Elks take pride in, and it is a popular place for Florida's young people, as thousands use it every year.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

JULY 4, 1776

Elks & Patriotism

Independence Day, the Fourth of July, is THE day of the United States! For on that day we won our freedom from Great Britain.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is and has always been a very patriotic organization. In evidence of our commitment to our country, the Order has taken numerous actions through the years to support our country and our freedom, and to recognize and assist the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for democracy.

In 1940, becoming quite apparent to many people that war was quickly approaching our shores, at the Grand Lodge Session held in Houston, Texas, the Elks unanimously voted to establish the Elks National Defense and Public Relations Commission. The primary focus of this Commission was to establish a patriotic program, which placed the power of the Order behind the United States National Defense Program. All Elks were called upon to help preserve and defend our democratic way of life.

In February, 2003, the Elks National Veterans Service Commission announced a program of mobilizing an "Army of Hope" to assist the families of Military Reservists and the National Guard who have been called to active duty during this time of crisis; to make a difference in the lives of our service men and women and their families.

The Elks Veterans Memorial is a tribute to the bravery, loyalty and dedication of the thousands of Elks who have fought and died for our country. It has been described as one of the most magnificent war memorials in the world, but with its monumental architecture and priceless art, the Memorial is more a symbol of peace and of the patriotism of the members of the Elks fraternity.

To promote patriotism among young people, the Order established an annual "Americanism Essay Contest" geared towards students in 5th through 8th grades. Authors of winning essays receive scholarship awards.

Yes! We Elks are proud to be Americans!
