Exalted Ruler from page 1 . . . by community members expressing interest in obtain-ing membership in our lodge. The community is watching how we care and help in our neighborhood and they want to help as well. People who see our support of charities and giving realize that the BPOE is a great organization. This is all because of our active membership. I know that at times your work may seem to go unnoticed but when people come to me and say, “WOW!, your membership works hard! I would like to be a part of the Paramus Elks.”, it warms my heart and provides testimony of what a true Elk is. I thank you. As always if you have any questions or con-cerns please contact me. member that we are brothers and sisters in fraternity. If someone seems overly upset during the time on task, take some additional time to diffuse the situa-tion through a nod of agreement or just by exhibiting a “let it slide” smile. We are all under pressure and honestly, at the end of the day, we are all here to support the charities we joined the Elks to help. By having fun and show-ing each other respect, coupled with giving each other the benefit of a doubt, we can do anything. When we do that, we as a Lodge cannot be stopped. I have so much faith in all of us working together as a unit that I know that by this time next year we will be excited to review all that has been accomplished together. It is really a wonderful vision. As we look at all the positive events coming up we are also seeing our membership growing. We have three new members joining us at the September 23rd meeting. They have all expressed where they would like to use their talents. Please take the time to get to know them. As an event chair, inform them of your mission and ask them to help you out. Addition-ally, we have had several lodge members approached

Gather your stuff and rent a space to sell, barter, or donate. An end of summer standard with fun for whole family. Buy a space for $10.00 member or $20.00 non-member. Plan now to be part

of this marvelous tradition! To reserve space call Diane at 201-483-3119. Cost is $20, $10 for Paramus Elks. Which is a bargain. To have your own garage sale it would cost you $65 for the newspaper ad and $15 for the permit. Food will be available. Rain or shine.

The House committee is preparing itself for a big rental season and in doing so members should be

prepared for a change or two. The first and most we have changed our entry security. If you have not received the new combination yet, please contact me. Addition-ally, the alarm system has been updated; if you have not selected a new code or received the new password you must see me as well. We have also secured the storage trailer in the back of the lodge as it had become a catch all of stuff. Now that most of the junk has been tossed, we plan to keep it neat and organized.

We have established firm lodge hours beginning September 1st giving members more opportu-

nity to come down and spend time with friends. The hours for the members bar are as follows:Sunday: Closed unless otherwise notedMonday: ClosedTuesday: 7:00 pm–10:00 pm (2nd & 4th Tues. only) Closed during meetingWednesday: 6:00pm-10:00pmThursday: 7:00pm-10:00pmFridays: 6:00pm-11:00pm

Bartenders have the option to stay open beyond set hours based on activity!! If you show up and the

bar is closed during set hours please notify me!!WE NEED BARTENDERS!!!! Contact Chris Civello to be added to the list!! [email protected] This is your lodge!!!! Be the reason it remains open!! Not the cause of it closing!!John Napoli. PVP • 551-574-2703 • [email protected]

House Committee Corner

Take a look around you. Do you see those 10 people doing everything down at YOUR lodge?

Where are the other 190 members? Do you see those same 10 members attending every lodge meeting? Where are the other 190 members? Do you see those same 10 members socializing almost every Friday night in the lounge? Where are the other 190 mem-bers? My point is that we don’t have to worry about running out of money and closing our doors. What we need to fear is the apathetic attitude that is eating away at this lodge. Gone are the days of large mem-berships willing to take on many tasks. Gone are the days of basking in the comfort of knowing who the officers are going to be “next year”. Your PER’s have been there and done that and none of us want to do it again; yet we do it to help our beloved lodge exist. But eventually that well is going to dry up. Do you want to be on the outside peering in the darkened window of a closed lodge or do you want to be on the inside looking out of the window on a bright fu-ture? Don’t be frightened. Step up to the plate. Take a committee, chair an affair, take on an office. Watch how your fellow members rally around and help you to get through your year. While money may be an is-sue, we need membership and leadership back. If we don’t have an ER ready to answer the call in seven months, all of the money in the world won’t save us.

While many of you are dumping buckets filled with ice and water over your heads in the name of

charity, let us remember that “Charity begins at Home”. I am challenging myself to have the downstairs mem-bers bar fully functional and open by October 1, 2014. You wanted it and you shall have it!! Keep me moti-vated by coming around starting now and show me how we are going to have the barstools full, the poker table busy, and the pool table and shuffleboard table with waiting lists!!!! Lets bring the fun back!! I hereby call out all Paramus Elks Members to take the challenge and turn the lodge back around!! . . . . .John Napoli, PVP

Elks National Foundation I am back for a short period of time to try and help our Lodge and Exhalted Ruler Debbie Kirkland with the Elks National Foundation. Since I left this column, we have lost our biggest yearly contributor, Vivian Denlinger. Over the years she has donated more to the ENF than any other mem-ber of the Paramus Elks. We have a lot to make up and will sorely miss her usual contribution. We all know that there are 115 Lodges in New Jersey and at the present time we are considered in 76th place, contributing just $0.61 per member. This was at the end of June, which is one quarter of the Lodge year. Just three members have contributed since June. In June we were in 9th place in the District with only one lodge trailing us. The latest July results show our lodge is on the move upwards in the District and State. As of this printing, we are up to 7th in the District and 59th

in the state by contributing $2.02 per member. Three cheers to PER John Brudie from his new location. He made a very nice donation to the ENF. Join the team to help get our numbers up there.

Please remember that this is our organization’s main charity. I am aware of the count-less requests each of us gets for contributions on a daily basis and many are for worthy causes. We do not get requests for this charity; we donate on our honor. Money goes to-wards youth activities, scholarships, and community activity. A considerable amount of donation funds received by ENF are returned to New Jersey.

PLEASE drop off your donation at the Lodge or mail it in. If you send a check (No cash) c/o Walt Burke, 689 Terrace Drive, Paramus, NJ 07652, I will forward it to Chicago. ...Thanks for reading, Walt Burke

We saw you. . .Diane Heron,

Chair of Com-munity Welfare and husband John - we highlight Diane’s tireless efforts with Community Wel-fare Tricky Tray and both Pasta Night and Pancake Break-fasts. John also is to be commended for his tireless efforts in helping with the Community Welfare committee and for being available all the time to help with programs and Lodge building maintenance. Photo was taken at the Paramus Food Bank where over the year they have used the ENF Beacon Grant of $2000.00 to help keep it filled.

Kudos to this team who continues to do the work of Elkdom and bring praise to Paramus Lodge 2001.
