BiographyQuirky pop artist, 21 born and raised in Camden Town London, Eliza Sophie Caird. Brought up from a musical background – her father John Caird, an English stage director and writer of plays, musicals and operas who is also an Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her mother is English musical theatre actress and model artist Frances Ruffelle. Doolittle is the granddaughter of Sylvia Young, founder of the famous theatre school.

From a young age Eliza has been used to being around musical parents and grandparents and has been exposed from birth to the theatrical and musical lifestyle. Eliza chose the stage name ‘Eliza Doolittle’, the character from ‘My Fair Lady’, as she had been referred to this as a child.

To gain recognition Doolittle toured the UK with her band to help enter the charts. This soon tuned into the ‘Playground Unplugged’ tour where she performed at the secondary schools Hagley RC High School, The Magna Carta School, The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre, Highworth Grammar School and Presdales school and more.

This is a home video of Eliza and her band at Kingsdale School.

Critical Opinion • Fraser McAlpine of BBC Bloggave the album a positive review stating:Let’s start with the voice. It’s a beautiful, expressive thing: high and clear, with the occasional emotive crack. The pretty melodies and tweeting harmonies (literally, in some cases) are rendered snoozily, as if Eliza’s vocals were recorded just after waking and stretching from a dream-filled sleep.

Michael HannThe Guardian It's hard not to jump to this conclusion about Eliza Doolittle: if Lily Allen sticks to her pledge to retire from music, there's a sparky-young-woman-sized gap in the market into which she can skip. Her debut album, due in summer, is cut from a similar cloth to Allen's – a collage of tastefully chosen vintage samples, over which she trills her tales of being 21 and pretty in London.

Influenced By..

This is a short interview I found online in which Eliza explains how her musical parents and upbringing have influenced her and the sort of music she listens to – which influenced her music.

Influenced ByAfter listening to Eliza’s album it is apparent that she has had an impact on three main female British pop artists Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash and Lily Allen. Her sound reflects a modern jazz and funk, which sends off a vintage vibe. She has an excellent band of 2 or 3 multi instrumentalists who play instruments such as the ukulele, double bass, guitar and more. This is all merged in to give a 50s style look by dressing them in retro pin stripped shirts, white chinos and bow ties. All matching – of course

How Eliza represents herself as a ‘Pop Artist’

Pop is a very general genre to specify however I feel that Eliza Doolittle manages to portray pop in a very sweet endearing way with a modern touch. Most would associate pop with Britney Spears or the Spice Girls however I feel that pop has a new element to it and a more meaningful undertones in the sounds and the lyrics. Eliza has very sleepy, girly tune to her tracks and voice which make her music sound innocent and sweet – this is why I like her music. Eliza is similar to other pop artist yet she has a very individual style, and manages to pull of fashion in a very different way to most (you wouldn’t catch her in anything but shorts or dress’s).

How Eliza represents herself as a ‘Pop Artist’

Eliza strived to be an original pop artist and this reflects on her music. Over all looking at Eliza Doolittle she is is not a 1st generation pop artist and takes inspiration from her theatrical upbringing and other soul/jazz artists. The more mainstream tracks don’t indicate this however the other tracks on her album do reflect this.

Eliza Doolittle ‘Image’

As Eliza has only released one album she is still not that recognised as a ‘leading poop artist’ but she does has a very individual image. She has had a good reception from the British public and is often described as being a ‘quirky’ and ‘fun’ this makes her more loveable. She is not only recognised through her music, she is a fashion icon too and encourages young people to express themselves through music and fashion and hopes that her music can encourage this.
