1. Introduction

This User Guide describes ElixirFont for AFP™, a so-phisticated bitmap character set editor that allows youto create and edit character sets in what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) format.

With ElixirFont, you can perform the following opera-tions to fonts:

edit individual characters in a font by providingtools to manipulate each character bitmap

apply transformations to one, all, or a sequenceof characters in a font, enabling you to embolden,italicize, underline and perform othertransformations

display and change character or font propertiessuch as kerning, baseline offset, orientation, etc.

The current release of ElixirFont fully supports charac-ter set editing and creation for conversion to and fromAFP bounded-box and unbounded-box fonts, double-byte fonts, and HP fonts.

In conjunction with the Elixir Desktop and Convertersfor AFP, fonts can easily be imported and convertedto Elixir's generic font format, edited, and reconvertedback to their original or other formats.

ElixirForm for AFP, a forms creation package thatenables users to create and edit boilerplate formsusing standard OGL form elements (see the Elix-irForm for AFP User's Guide for moreinformation).

Who should use this guide

This guide is intended for users familiar with AFPcharacter sets and with AFP page printing resources.

Knowledge of Windows and DOS, specifically naviga-tion through directory and subdirectory structures andfile operations is also required.

Conventions

This section describes display and typographical con-ventions used in this guide.

Display conventions

ElixirFont adheres to Microsoft Windows conventionsfor using menus, menu commands, dialog boxes,command buttons, icons and a mouse. See yourWindows manual for more information.

Typographical conventions

The following typographical conventions are usedthroughout this guide.

Keystrokes are shown enclosed in < > (anglebrackets). For example, <Enter>.

Key combinations are denoted by a plus sign be-tween keys. For example, <Shift> + <F1> indi-cates to simultaneously press the <Shift> and the<F1> keys.

Menu titles are shown in bold. Menu options areenclosed in [ ] (square brackets). For example,

Pull down the File menu and select [New Font].

Commands, options, actions, and parametersthat require description are shown in bold fol-lowed on the next line by the description. For ex-ample:

DeleteDeletes the selected characters.

Steps in a procedure are shown in numbered boldparagraphs. For example

Comments relating to a step (such as this para-graph) are shown in regular text following the boldparagraph.

On-line Help

Elixir software uses the Microsoft Windows Help pro-gram to provide on-line Help for all functions.

For more information about Windows Help, select the[How to Use Help] option in the Help menu, or seeyour Microsoft Windows documentation.

The Help files included with your Elixir software in-clude graphics created using screen drivers with largefonts. If you use a screen driver with small fonts, theHelp file graphics may not display clearly. For opti-mum graphics display, use a screen driver with largefonts.

You can display on-line Help in the following ways:

Bubble HelpClick on an icon with the right mouse button to view itsproperties (if applicable) or to display "bubble help."Bubble help is a short description of the icon functionthat displays in a bubble extending from the icon.

Quick HelpEnable the quick function by selecting the quick helpoption in the Usage Switches (or Preferences -- forElixirImage) dialog box. When you move the screenpointer over an icon on the screen, a short descriptionof the icon function displays in the message area ofthe screen. During certain operations a messageabout the function you are performing also displays inthe message area. To see these operational mes-sages, disable quick help.

Context sensitive HelpTo use this function, click on an icon and press <F1>.If available, the appropriate Help topic displays. If nospecific topic is available, the Help table of contentsdisplays.

Help menuSelect [Help] from the top pull-down menu and chooseone of the displayed topics.

Dialog box HelpClick on the [Help] button in a dialog box to view anassociated Help topic. Under Windows 95 and Win-dows NT, right-click on a dialog box option to displayan associated Help topic.

Help pop-ups and jumpsWithin Help topic text, words or phrases underlined ingreen are pop-ups or jumps. When you click on apop-up topic, a box displays within the current Helptopic with additional information. When you click on ajump, a different, associated Help topic displays.

Help hypergraphicsHypergraphics are special graphics within Help filesthat contain "hot spots". Hot spots are either pop-uptopics or jumps. Hypergraphics in Elixir Help are mostcommonly dialog boxes with option hot spots (pop-updefinitions), toolboxes with tool hot spots (topicjumps), and menus with option hot spots (topic jumpsor pop-up definitions).

Move the cursor over a hypergraphic until a hand dis-plays, then click on this hot spot to display a pop-uptopic, or a "jump". To close a pop-up topic, click themouse button. To return to the original Help topicfrom a jump, click on <Back> in the Help file menu.

Organization of this Guide

This guide includes the following:

an overview of AFP font structure

how ElixirFont handles fonts converted from AFPand non-AFP formats

ElixirFont features and how to use them.

This User Guide is organized as follows:

Chapter 1, "Introduction," provides an overview ofElixirFont and describes how to install and start Elixir-Font. It also gives additional information about thecontents of this manual.

Chapter 2, "ElixirFont basics," describes the layoutand components that make up the ElixirFont mainscreen.

Chapter 3, "Font structure," describes the AFP andElixir-format font structure, and the AFP terminologyused throughout this guide. If you are not familiar withfont structures and, specifically, AFP character sets,we strongly recommend that you read this chapter.

INTRODUCTION


Starting ElixirFont

You can only start ElixirFont from the Elixir Desktop.

To start ElixirFont from the Elixir Desktop, open(double-click on) the ElixirFont icon at the right of theDesktop.

The ElixirFont main screen displays.

Alternatively, with the Elixir Desktop displayed:

1. Open the Elixir Fonts folder.

2. Make sure you selected the [Show Charset]option (as shown below) or the [Show CodedFonts] option in the Filter menu.

3. Open (double-click on) any .HDR font file.

The ElixirFont Character Set window displays the fontloaded.

Exiting ElixirFont

To exit ElixirFont, double-click on the Exit button atthe top left of the main screen.

2. ElixirFont basics

This chapter describes the layout and componentsthat make up the ElixirFont main screen.

Main screen components

The ElixirFont main screen contains the followingcomponents:

Start the ElixirFont application by double-clicking onthe ElixirFont icon. The main screen displays.

File menu

The File menu allows you to:

load and save character sets, coded fonts, andcode pages

exit ElixirFont.

Open Coded FontDisplays the Load Coded Font dialog box listing .CDFfiles. Select a coded font and click on [OK].

Open CharsetDisplays the Load Charset dialog box listing .HDRfiles. Select a character set and click on [OK].

Open Code PageDisplays the Load Code Page dialog box listing .CODfiles. Select a code page and click on [OK].

Save Coded FontAllows you to save the .CDF file with the names of thecurrently loaded character set and code page.

Save Charset asAllows you to save an edited character set under anew name or an existing name (overwrites old file).

Save Code Page asAllows you to save an edited .COD code page file un-der a new name or an existing name (overwrites oldfile).

System menu

The System menu allows you to:

set usage switchesreset to defaultssave customized configurations.

Usage SwitchesDisplays the Usage Switches dialog box with the fol-lowing options:

Save State on ExitSelect to save your customized settings. Unse-lected returns settings to ElixirFont defaults.

Show Quick HelpSelect to display short descriptions in the area un-der the ElixirFont menu bar.

Always bring Toolbox to topSelect to have the Toolbox always display on topof any window (no need to tile windows to accessToolbox).

Convert non-AFP font to Charset on loadSelect to load and reformat fonts as an Elixir-format character set. Unselected loads the fontas a non-AFP font.

Highlight chars in the Code PageSelect to display all fonts referenced in the codepage as a different color in the Character Setwindow.

Select Charset with Code PointReserved for future use.

Reset to DefaultsResets all configuration parameters to the ElixirFontdefault values.

Save ConfigurationSaves your customized settings rather than resettingto ElixirFont defaults.

Window menu

The Window menu controls the way each editing win-dow displays. You can:

tile all displayed windows

toggle the display on or off for the Character Set,Code Page, and Toolbox windows.

Help menu

The Help menu allows you to access the on-line helpfiles for ElixirFont. See the "Introduction" chapter forinformation about how to use on-line help.

Toolbox

The left side of the screen shows the Toolbox whichcontains buttons you can select to view, edit, and ma-nipulate individual characters or the entire font.

Toolbox options

This section describes ElixirFont tools and theirfunctions.

Select a tool to display options for that tool at the bot-tom of the Toolbox. Most tools also contain the op-tions shown below.

The middle buttons allow you to undo the last opera-tion, suspend the current conversion, or to apply thecurrent tool or conversion.

If you suspend the current conversion, the undo op-eration may not be available.

The area below the buttons contains different optionsdepending on the selected tool.

The ElixirFont tools are described in more detail in thefollowing chapters of this guide.

You use the Character Set window menu bar for cre-ating, editing, and saving character sets with selectedcoded fonts.

Charset menu

The options in the Charset menu allow you to create,open, and save a coded font, and merge charactersets together.

New CharsetAllows you to create a new character set through useof several dialog boxes requesting information aboutyour new character set. Once you have entered therequired information, the new character set displays.

Open CharsetDisplays the Load Charset dialog box listing .HDRfiles. Select a character set and click on [OK].


Save CharsetAllows you to save a character set.

Save Charset asAllows you to save an edited character set under anew name or an existing name (overwrites old file).

Save Coded FontAllows you to save the .CDF file with the same name.

Merge CharsetsDisplays the Load Charset for Merge dialog box listingthe .HDR files. Select a character set to merge withthe currently displayed character set and click on[OK].

Edit menu

The Edit menu allows you to undo actions and deleteor select/unselect characters or entire character sets.

UndoUndoes the last edit operation.

DeleteAllows you to delete selected characters.

Select allAllows you to select all characters in the character set.

Unselect allAllows you to unselect all selected characters in thecharacter set.

Font menu

The Font menu allows access to information aboutthe properties and statistics of a complete font and re-format of a non-AFP font. You can also view a sam-ple of how the font will print.

PropertiesDisplays the Font Properties dialog box which pro-vides values and parameters of the loaded characterset.

StatisticsDisplays the Size of Elixir Format Font dialog boxwhich provides the size (bytes) of each component(headers, bitmaps, etc.), and the total size of theloaded character set.

SampleDisplays a sample pad showing the characters as theywill print on a page.

ReformatAllows you to reformat a non-AFP font to AFP. Dis-abled if an AFP character set is loaded.

SortSorts characters by their GCID's.

Char menu

The Char menu provides properties and statistics ofan individual character.

PropertiesDisplays the Character and CodePoint Properties dia-log box which provides rotation, GCID, and character-istics of an individual font.

CopyAllows you to copy a selected font to a new location.

KillAllows you to remove a selected character from acharacter set.

SwapAllows you to swap a selected character with anothercharacter.

Load ImageDisplays the Load Image dialog box which allows youto load BMP, LP3, PCX, or TIF images. Size limit is64K.

Transforms menu

The Transforms menu allows you to perform trans-formation options to selected characters or to a com-plete character set. See the chapters on transformingfor complete option descriptions.

Code Page window menu bar

The Code Page window menu bar allows you to cre-ate, load, and save code pages, edit code points, andcontrol how the Code Page window displays.

CodePage menu

The CodePage menu allows you to create, save, oropen an existing code page.

New Code PageDisplays the Code Page Properties dialog box whichprovides options that include:

Code Page descriptiondefault character informationvariable space character information.

Open Code PageDisplays the Load Code Page dialog box listing .CODfiles. Select a code page and click on [OK].


Save Code PageAllows you to save the loaded code page, overwritingthe original. No warning is given if you edited charac-ters within the code page.

Save Code Page asAllows you to save an edited code page under a newname or an existing name (overwrites old file).

Save Coded FontAllows you to save the loaded coded font file, overwrit-ing the original. If you loaded a character set andcoded font individually, the program prompts you forthe name of the coded font, either creating a new fileor overwriting the existing file.

PropertiesDisplays the Code Page Properties dialog box con-taining the following:

3. Font structure

This chapter describes AFP and Elixir font structuresand how ElixirFont handles fonts originating from AFPand non-AFP sources. We strongly recommend thatyou read this chapter, even if you are familiar withAFP fonts. If you are not familiar with AFP fonts, youshould also read IBM's Host Font Data Stream Refer-ence and About Type manuals.

ElixirFont uses a proprietary structure that enablesyou to display and edit characters in a WYSIWYG for-mat.

Converters in the Elixir Desktop allow you to convertfonts from AFP Bounded Box and Unbounded Box,Hewlett-Packard (HP), and Bitstream Facelift outline(contour) formats, to Elixir format fonts.

AFP font structure

To understand AFP fonts, you must have a basic un-derstanding of some general font-related definitions.The following sections describe the components of atype family, a term that encompasses all the charac-teristics of printed text.

Type family

A type family is a group of typefaces that have a com-mon basic design but can vary in size and style. Ex-amples of type families are:

Typeface

A typeface is collection of characters with the samestyle, weight, and width, as described below:

Style is the inclination of characters with respectto the vertical axis; for example, Roman (upright)or italic (top slant to the right).

Weight is the degree of boldness of a typeface,for example, semi-light, light, medium, or bold.

Width is the degree of horizontal spacing of acharacter; for example, condensed or normal.

Examples of typefaces are:

Type font

A type font (also called a font) is a collection of char-acters that share the same type family, typeface, andsize. Examples of fonts are:

Sonoran Sans Serif 10-point Roman mediumnormal

Helvetica 8-point italic bold condensed

Times 12-point italic light normal

AFP font types

AFP fonts can be Bounded Box or Unbounded Boxfonts.

FONT STRUCTURE


Unbounded Box fonts

Unbounded Box fonts are AFP fonts for IBM 3800printers. A characteristic of Unbounded Box fonts isthat for printing rotated text, a separate font is re-quired for each of the four rotations of the font (0o, 90o,180o, and 270o from the inline print direction).

Bounded Box fonts

Bounded Box fonts are AFP fonts for IBM printersother than the 3800. For printing rotated fonts onthese printers, only one version of the font is requiredwhich is rotated "on the fly".

AFP font components

Each AFP font has three components:

Character setCode pageCoded font

Character set

An AFP character set corresponds to the type font (orfont) described in the previous section. A characterset contains information about a single type family,typeface, bitmap, and point size, and can also includeinformation about the baseline positioning, rotation,ascender, etc. Included in the character set is aunique identifier for each character in the characterset called a graphic character ID (GCID).

Code page

A code page maps keyboard entries to characters in acharacter set. Each key on a keyboard correspondsto a hexadecimal code point. When printing on anAFP printer, the code point is matched to a GCID inthe code page. This allows you to use different codepages, for example to print subsets of characters in acharacter set (like for different European languages).

A coded font links a character set to a code page. Inorder for a character to be printed, you must include itin the character set, and list it in a code page, and thetwo must link in a coded font.

(also called the code point). When printing the letterA:

its code point (C1) is matched to a GCID in thecode page for the font (LA020000 in the exampleshown in figure 3-1)

the GCID is matched to a raster pattern in thecharacter set for the font

Note that you must include all GCIDs (in the codepage) in the character set, otherwise an error condi-tion will exist at print time.

AFP font characteristics

This section describes some characteristics of AFPfonts, particularly their appearance on a printed page.

Inline (Print) direction

The inline print direction (or simply print direction) isthe direction in which characters are added to a line oftext. The inline print direction has four possible val-ues: 0o, 90o, 180o, and 270o as shown below (with re-spect to this page):

Character baseline

The character baseline is a reference to which char-acters align as they are added to the page in the inline(print) direction. The character baseline is always par-allel to the inline (print) direction.

Character rotation

The character rotation is the angle through which yourotate a printed character clockwise in 90o incrementsabout the character baseline.

The following figure shows the four character rotationsfor the 0o inline (print) direction.

As there are four inline print directions, there are a to-tal of 16 combinations of inline (Print) directions andcharacter rotations. Note that since Unbounded Boxfonts do not support the 180o print direction, only 12combinations apply for Unbounded Box fonts.

Toned-Pel box

A Toned-Pel box defines the boundaries of a charac-ter bitmap. Each character bitmap in a character setconsists of an ordered array of black dots called tonedpels and non-printing blank dots called untoned pels.The toned pels define the shape of the character andthe untoned pels define the white space in and aboutthe character.

Printing adjacent characters

When printing side-by-side characters (like text in aword), each character is positioned according to itscharacter reference point and character escapementpoint.

The character reference point defines the current printposition for the character.

The character escapement point marks the end of thespace along the character baseline allocated for thecharacter. When printing adjacent characters, the ref-erence point of the next character is placed at thispoint.

The distance from the character reference point to thenear edge of the toned-pel box is the "A-space" forthe character.

The toned-pel box width is the "B-space" for thecharacter.

If a font's characters have the same increment (or uni-form increment), the font is a monospaced or fixedpitch font.

If a font's character increments are different for eachcharacter, the font is a proportional-spaced or typo-graphic font.

Raster-Pattern box

A Raster-Pattern box encloses, or is superimposed onthe toned-pel box. The Raster-Pattern box providesanother method of placing characters on a printedpage.

For a Bounded-box font, the width of the Raster-Pattern box is measured along the inline (print)direction.

For an Unbounded-box font, the width of the Raster-Pattern box is always measured along the top edge ofthe printed form.

For a Bounded-box font, the Uniform A-space is thenumber of pels of the character's A-space from thenear edge of the Raster-Pattern box to the CharacterReference Point. The Uniform A-space can be zeroor positive (zero means that the Character ReferencePoint lies on the near edge of the Raster-Pattern box).

Monospaced Bounded-box fonts have the same uni-form A-space value for all characters.

Ascenders and descenders

The character ascender is the distance from the char-acter baseline to the topmost toned pel.

The character descender is the distance from charac-ter baseline to the lowest toned pel.

Note that ascenders and descenders are different fordifferent rotations of a character.

Baseline positioning

The character baseline offset specifies where to placethe character relative to the character baseline. Thefollowing figure shows the baseline offset (measuredin pels) for different character rotations.

If the baseline offset is the same for all characters in agiven rotation of a character set, it is a Uniform Base-line Offset.

If the baseline offset is different for characters in agiven rotation, the largest offset is the MaximumBaseline Offset.

Kerning

Kerning is a technique of printing characters so thatthey partially overlap. Kerning is normally used toplace italicized characters closer to each other for amore pleasing appearance.

Kerning can be of two types:

A character is Left kerned if it partially overlapsthe preceding character, like the letter f in the fig-ure above.

A character is Right kerned if it partially overlapsthe next character, like the letter f in the followingexample.

AFP font naming conventions

AFP font naming conventions relate the inline (Print)direction and character rotation combination to a two-character file name prefix. The two-character prefixidentifies the coded font or character set, and the re-maining (one to six) characters are the coded font IDor character set ID. See an About Type ReferenceManual for more information.

Bounded-box naming convention

All Bounded-box coded fonts are prefixed with X0,and all Bounded-box character sets are prefixed withC0.

Unbounded-box naming convention

Unbounded-box font file name prefixes depend on theinline (print) direction and the font rotation, as shownin the following table.

Elixir font structure

When converted to Elixir format, you can edit a font ina variety of ways; for example, you can resize a font,merge it with other fonts, italicize it, etc. The opera-tions you can perform on individual characters and onthe font depends on the source of the font; whetheryou converted the font from an AFP character set orfrom a non-AFP font.

The following sections in this chapter describe howElixirFont handles fonts from AFP (Bounded-box andUnbounded-box) and non-AFP (such as HP PCL andBitstream Facelift) sources.

Chapters following this one describe how to edit andtransform AFP and non-AFP sourced fonts.

Elixir font converted from a non-AFP source

Each Elixir format font includes at least three compo-nents with different file extensions in the drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\ELIXIR directory. These are:

A .HDR component; this file contains the fontheader information.

A .GLH component; this file contains header in-formation for each character.

A .GLY component; this file defines the actualbitmaps of the characters.

If you converted an Elixir format font from an AFPsource (Bounded-box or Unbounded-box) using theElixir Desktop Converter icon, it also contains the filesdescribed in the following section.

Elixir font converted from an AFP source

When you use the Desktop Converter icon to convertan AFP (Bounded-box or Unbounded-box) font toElixir format, a dialog box prompts you to create eithera "PC-mapped" or "Full" Elixir version of the AFP font.

PC-mapped Elixir fonts

The "PC-mapped" option creates an Elixir version thatis a subset of the AFP font. Because an AFP charac-ter set may contain many more characters than al-lowed by other non-AFP fonts, the "PC-mapped"version limits the number of characters to 256, thenumber allowed by many other font formats. An ElixirKeyboard Mapping Table determines the subset thatconverts (the table is a .KMP file indrive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\MAPS).

A number of .KMP files are written to thedrive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\MAPS directory during ElixirDesktop and Converters installation. Each .KMP fileis an ASCII file which lists GCIDs with correspondingASCII (hex) keyboard positions. You select the .KMPfile (used for font conversions) when you install theElixir Desktop and Converters and normally will notchange it unless generating fonts in another language(see the Elixir Desktop and Converter for AFP User'sGuide for more information).

Typically, you use the "PC-mapped" option if you donot want to edit the font, but want to convert it to an-other non-AFP format (such as HP PCL). The "PC-mapped" font contains the three .HDR, .GLH, and.GLY components described in the previous section.The "PC-mapped" Elixir font stem name starts with X0if the source was a Bounded-box font and X1, X2, orX4 if the source was an Unbounded-box font.

Note: You should not edit a "PC-mapped" font unlessyou do not plan to reconvert the font back to AFPformat.

Full character set Elixir fonts

The "Full" character set option converts the entireAFP character set to an Elixir-format font. You use

this option if you want to edit the Elixir-format font,then reconvert the font back to AFP format (Bounded-box or Unbounded-box). When creating a "Full" font,the following components are generated in thedrive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\ELIXIR directory:

Bounded-box fonts:

.HDR, .GLH, and .GLY components described inthe previous section. The stem names are thesame as the AFP character set and start with C0.

GL1, .GL2, GL3, and .GL4 files. The stem nameof each file is the same as the stem name of theBounded-box character set (for example,C0A075N0.GL1, C0A075N0.GL2, etc.). The filescorrespond to 0o, 90o, 180o and 270o rotations ofthe Bounded-box character set, respectively.Note that each is an ASCII file containing metricsinformation (such as the A-space, B-space, C-space, GCID, and orientation) and other informa-tion for each character in the character set. Allfour files are created during conversion.

A .HDA file with the same stem name as theBounded-box character set (starting with C0).This file contains additional font header informa-tion for the Bounded-box font.

Unbounded-box fonts:

HDR, .GLH, and .GLY components described inthe previous section. The stem names are thesame as the AFP Unbounded-box font file andstart with C1, C2, or C4 depending on the sourcefont orientation.

A .GL0 file (called the GCID Mapping List) withthe same stem name as the Unbounded-box font(starting with C1 through CG depending on thesource font orientation). The file includes metricsinformation (such as the A-space, B-space, C-space, GCID, and orientation) and other informa-tion for each character in the character set.

A .HDA file with the same stem name as theUnbounded-box character set (starting with C1through C4 depending on the source font orienta-tion). This file contains additional font header

information for the Elixir version of theUnbounded-box font.

The following components are created for bothUnbounded-box and Bounded-box fonts:

A .COD file with the same stem name as thecharacter set (starting with T1). This is an ASCIIfile that derives from the AFP Code Page and is alist of EBCDIC code points and correspondingGCIDs for each character in the AFP characterset.

A .CDF file with the same stem name as the char-acter set (starting with X0, X1, X2, or X4 depend-ing on the source font). This is an ASCII file thatderives from the AFP Coded Font and is a list ofcorrespondence between the character setname, code page name, and the Keyboard Map-ping File (.KMP).

Elixir character set and font differences

The differences described in this section assume thatyou are familiar with editing Elixir-format charactersets and non-AFP fonts described in the followingchapters.

ElixirFont handles Elixir-format character sets andnon-AFP fonts differently in the following ways:

AFP-originated character sets are arranged in or-der of GCID; non-AFP fonts are arranged inASCII-sorted order in the displayed charactercells.

Non-AFP fonts may have null (gray) characters;Elixir-format character sets do not.

The [Swap] option is disabled when editing char-acter sets.

When using the [Merge] option in a character set,the program prompts you for the character rota-tion and GCID of each in the target font. If theGCID exists in the target font, you are prompted

whether you want the original character replaced.Otherwise the character is merged in the targetfont and the character set is restored. When us-ing the [Merge] option in a non-AFP font, the tar-get character is overwritten.

Character header properties dialog boxes aredifferent.

The character set header information displays inthree additional dialog boxes.

4. Loading fonts and code pages

This chapter describes how to create a new characterset, load an existing font, and load and edit a codepage.

Loading an Elixir-format character set

To display an Elixir-format character set, load one ofthe following by opening them from the Desktop ElixirFonts folder, or by using the ElixirFont main screenFile menu, or the Character Set window Charsetmenu (described later in this section):

an Elixir-format character set (C0 or C1 prefixedfile)

a Coded Font (X0 or X1 prefixed file)

a non-AFP font. (Respond with YES to [Refor-mat to AFP Charset]).

When opening files note the following:

Opening a Character Set (C0, C1 prefix) displaysthe character set in the Character Set window.

Opening a Code Page (T1 prefixed files) displaysthe code page in the Code Page window.

Opening a Coded Font (X0, X1 prefixed files) dis-plays both the character set and code page in theappropriate windows.

The ElixirFont screen header shows the ElixirFontmenu bar.

The top right portion of the screen shows the Charac-ter Set Window which displays rows of characters ar-ranged (left-to-right and top-to-bottom) in alphabeticalorder by character GCID. Each character bitmap dis-plays in a rectangular cell. The Character Set Win-dow header also shows a menu bar.

The left of the screen shows a number of editing toolsarranged in a Toolbox. These and other operationsare briefly described at the end of this chapter and inmore detail in later chapters.

The bottom right portion of the screen is the CodePage Window (initially blank if you loaded a characterset). Loading and using a Code Page is describedlater in this chapter. The Code Page Window headerdisplays the Code Page Window menu bar.

LOADING FONTS AND CODE PAGES


Use the standard Windows handles to enlarge, maxi-mize, and move the Edit and Code Page windows andto move the Toolbox. Use the Window menu tohide/show the Edit, Code Page, and Toolboxwindows.

When you move the screen pointer over a character,the GCID of that character displays at the top left ofthe screen. (A gray border displays around the cur-rent character cell).

The top of the screen also shows (from left to right)the positional order of each character in decimal andhexadecimal notation, the width of the character inpels, and whether the current character is NON-BLANK or a SPACING character. A spacing charac-ter is a blank bitmap used for applying spacingbetween characters or words. All other characterswhich contain bitmaps are NONBLANK characters.

Loading a non-AFP font

To load a non-AFP Elixir font, follow these steps:

1. Pull down the System menu and select [UsageSwitches].

The Usage Switches dialog box displays.

2. Select the [Convert non-AFP font to Charseton load] option and click [OK].



3. Press <F8> (or pull down the File menu andselect [Open Charset]).

The Load Charset dialog box displays and liststhe .HDR components of fonts.

4. Select a non-AFP font.

Note that AFP character sets begin with C0 andC1, and that non-AFP fonts can begin with anycharacter.

5. Click on [OK].

The following dialog box displays:

Your selection at this point determines how ElixirFonthandles the loaded non-AFP font:

Click on [Yes] to load the font and reformat it asan Elixir-format character set. See the "Refor-matting to a character set" section in this chapterfor further information.

Click on [No] to load the font as a non-AFP font.See the "Loading as a non-AFP font" section inthis chapter for further information.



Reformatting to a character set

To reformat to a character set:

1. Follow the steps for loading a non-AFP font.

2. Select [Yes] to reformat the font into anElixir-format character set.

The Reformatting to AFP Character Set dialogbox displays:

The Reformatting to AFP Character Set dialogbox contains the following options:

Select [BOUNDED] to reformat the font to aBounded-box format.

Select [3800 UNBOUNDED] to reformat thefont to a 0o rotation Unbounded-box format.

Note that you cannot use ElixirFont to reformat anUnbounded-box font to 90o or 270o rotations. Todo so, you must use the Elixir Desktop Converterto convert the font to Unbounded-box format andspecify the rotation in the dialog box that displays.See the Elixir Desktop and Converters UserGuide for more information.



ResolutionSelect [Fixed 240 Pels] or [Relative Units] to set aflag which specifies the internal measurements(such as A-space, etc.) of a Bounded-box font tofixed 240 dots per inch or to relative units (the ac-tual relative measurement is specified in the AFPfont header and cannot be specified from Elixir-Font). Unbounded-box fonts can only be set to240 pels.

Most users should select [Fixed 240 Pels] unlessyou want to generate a font for the IBM 4028which operates at 300.

Charset nameSelect the name of the reformatted character set:

The default for a Bounded-box font is C0 ap-pended to the start of the font stem name.For example, C014NP converts toC0C014NP.

The default for an Unbounded-box font is C1appended to the start of the original filename. For example, C014NP converts toC1C014NP.

The last characters of the original non-AFP fontstem name truncate if the original font name con-tains more than six characters. We recommendusing the default character set name thatdisplays.

GCID Mapping listThe GCID mapping list is a file that maps charac-ter positions in a non-AFP font to predefinedGCIDs. Two default GCID mapping lists are pro-vided: C0ADOBE.GL1 for creating Bounded-boxfonts and C0ADOBE.GL0 for creatingUnbounded-box fonts. You can overwrite thesebut we recommend using the defaults.

Current ResolutionThe current resolution of the font in pels (cannotbe edited).



Resize to 300Applicable only for Bounded-box fonts whenchanging the resolution using the Resolutionfield, described above. When you resize the fontby specifying this option, check the quality of theoutput font. We recommend resizing the font us-ing the [Resize] option in ElixirFont. See the"Transforming Elixir-format character sets" chap-ter for more information about the [Resize] option.

Loading as a non-AFP font

To load as a non-AFP font:

1. Follow the steps for loading a non-AFP font.

2. Select [No] to load the font as an non-AFPElixir-format font.

The character set displays in the Character Setwindow as shown in the following figure:

The Character Set window shows the character bit-maps of the font arranged left-to-right and top-to-



bottom by the ASCII position of the character in thefont. The positions are defined in the font header file(.HDR).

The top of the screen shows the position of eachcharacter in decimal and hexadecimal notation whenyou move the screen pointer over the character (agray box appears around the current character).

The Code Page window is initially blank.

Also shown is the width (in pels) of the character, andwhether the character is NULL, SPACING, or NON-BLANK. A null character means that a character isnot defined for this position and displays as a filledgray cell (like the first 32 characters in the font). Aspacing character occupies a cell but does not have abitmap and prints as a spacing character. All othernonblank characters contain bitmaps.

The left of the screen displays the Toolbox with toolsthat you can use to edit and manipulate the charactersor the entire Elixir-format character set. See the "Edit-ing non-AFP fonts" chapter for more information aboutthe Toolbox.

Creating new character sets

ElixirFont allows you to create the following types offont:

PC-mapped font.Elixir format character set.

Creating a new PC-mapped font

To create a new PC-mapped font,

1. Pull down the Charset menu and select [NewCharset].

The Properties of New Font dialog box displays.

2. Select [PC-Mapped Font].

Note that the default stem name and spacing typefor a new PC-mapped font are FONT01 andNULL.

3. Specify the [Number of Characters], [Height ofcharacter boxes], [Width of character boxes],and [Baseline from bottom] for the new fontand click on OK.

The Font Properties dialog box displays.

4. Select options in the Font Properties dialogbox.

See the "Editing non-AFP fonts" chapter for infor-mation about the options in the Font Propertiesdialog box.

5. Click [OK].

A new PC-mapped font containing all NULL char-acters is created.



Adding a bitmap to a cell

To add a bitmap to a cell:

1. Select a NULL cell and press <F2>.

The Properties of Null Character dialog boxdisplays.

2. Change the character type to [Spacing] andclick on OK.

3. Double-click on the new SPACING characterand edit the bitmap.

See the "Editing non-AFP fonts" chapter for informa-tion about editing a bitmap.

Creating a new AFP character set

To create a new AFP character set:

1. Pull down the Charset menu and select [NewCharset].

The Properties of New Font dialog box displays.

2. Select [AFP Character Set].



Note that the default stem name and spacing typefor a new AFP character set are C0FONT01 andSPACING

3. Specify the [Number of Characters], [Height ofcharacter boxes], [Width of character boxes],and [Baseline from bottom] for the newcharacter set.

4. Click on OK.

The Reformatting to AFP Character Set dialogbox described earlier in this chapter displays.Note that the [GCID Mapping List] option is notavailable when creating a new character set.

5. Select options and click on [OK] as thefollowing dialog boxes display:

Options in these dialog boxes are described inthe "Editing Elixir-format character sets" chapter.

A new AFP character set containing all SPACINGcharacters loads into the Character Set window.

6. Double-click on each new SPACING characterand edit the bitmap.

Loading a Code Page

A Code Page maps keyboard entries to characters ina character set. Each key on the keyboard corre-sponds to a hexadecimal Code Point. When printingon an AFP printer, the Code Point is matched to aGCID in the Code Page. This allows you to use differ-ent code pages (for example to print subsets of char-acters in a character set which is useful for printingdifferent European languages).

Elixir provides PC versions of code pages asT1*.COD format ASCII files indrive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\ELIXIR.

To load a Code Page:

1. From the Desktop, open a T1, X0, or X1prefixed file in the Elixir Fonts folder

Note that opening a T1 file loads only a codepage while opening an X0 or X1 file loads both acode page and its associated character set.

Alternatively:

Make the Code Page Window the active win-dow and either press <F8> or pull down theCodePage menu and select [Open CodedPage].

In the ElixirFont Screen, pull down the Filemenu and select [Open Code Page].

The Load Code Page dialog box displays a list ofcode pages in the default directory.

2. Select a Code Page and click [OK].

The Code Page Window displays the selected CodePage as shown at the bottom of the following figure. Ifa character set is not loaded, the Code Page displaysGCID names only.

3. Pull down the System menu and select [UsageSwitches].

The Usage switches dialog box displays asshown earlier.

4. Select [Highlight chars in Code Page] andclick on [OK].

This highlights characters in the selected charac-ter set that map to the Code Page.

Editing a code page

To edit a code page, maximize the Code Page Win-dow for a better view.

Horizontal/Vertical Hex Display Toggle



The Code Page shows a grid of cells arranged in rowsand columns identified by hexadecimal digits acrossthe top row and left column.

The arrow at the top left of the grid (shown in the fig-ure above) points to the row or column that specifiesthe first hex digit of the code point.

For example, in the above figure, the number 1 has ahex code point B1. To switch rows and columns, clickon the arrow.

Each cell (identified by its hex code point) shows theGCID and corresponding character bitmap for the cur-rent Code Page.

You can edit a Code Page as follows:

Select any character/GCID and drag and drop itto another blank cell (code point).

Drag and drop a character from the Character SetWindow to any cell in the Code Page Window.

This powerful ElixirFont feature allows you create cus-tom code pages using simple drag and droptechniques.



5. Editing non-AFP fonts

This chapter describes how to edit Elixir-format fontsthat were not originally sourced from AFP charactersets.

Some examples of non-AFP fonts are installed in thedrive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\ELIXIR directory on your PCduring installation (CURL, ROUND1, and LION).

You can also generate your own Elixir-format fonts byusing the Efont Factory to convert Bitstream Faceliftfonts to Elixir-format fonts. See the Elixir Desktop andConverters User's Guide for more information.

Font basics

This section describes the characteristics of non-AFPfonts used to display, edit, and apply metrics to non-AFP fonts. The following figure shows some impor-tant characteristics of a character in a cell.

This section describes the ElixirFont menus and toolsused for editing, transforming, and setting fontproperties.

Select tool

The Select tool allows you to select one character or all char-acters in a loaded font.

Use the <Ctrl> + <A> fast key to select and deselectall characters in a font (toggle).

Select a range of characters by clicking on the firstcharacter, then <Ctrl>-clicking on the last character.

The Edit tool allows you to edit individual characterbitmaps.

Select a character and then select the Edit tool to editthe character. If you do not select a character, thesoftware defaults to the first non-space or non-nullcharacter. Alternatively, double-click on the character.The Edit Window displays at the right of the screen.

The bottom of the screen shows a partial list of char-acters with the current character selected. You canclick on another character to display it in the edit win-dow. You can also scroll through the entire font usingthe <Page Up>, <Page Down>, <Home>, and <End>keys, or use the Windows scrolling buttons.

Framing window



The right of the screen shows the framing windowwhich you can move to display different portions of thecharacter you are editing.

Initially the character displays at 8X magnification(each dot in the bitmap displays as a black or whitebox 8 bits high and 8 bits wide).

The Toolbox now shows editing tools and various op-tions which you can select. A selected tool or optiondisplays with a black background. In addition, you canselect options available from menus shown in the EditWindow menu bar, and also from the Edit WindowToolbar displayed just below the menu bar.

The three left blocks display object coordinates andsize, and change based upon the selected tool.

The following are the other options, from left to right:

GridDisplays or hides the grid. The grid does not displayfor magnifications of 4x and less.


MagnificationShows the current magnification. Click on the downarrow to decrease the magnification, or the up arrowto increase it.

PostSaves changes made to the character bitmap.

PrevDisplays the previous character in the font for editing.Prompts for confirmation if you made changes.

NextDisplays the next character in the font for editing.Prompts for confirmation if you made changes.



Edit tool options

The editing tools display at the top of the Toolbox asshown in the following figure.

Character PropertiesDisplays the Character Properties dialog box. See the"Character Properties tool" section in this chapter formore information.

RulerDisplays the horizontal and vertical coordinates of thescreen pointer from the top left of the character cell (indots). The coordinates display at the left of the EditWindow Toolbar.

Select areaAllows you to select a rectangular area of the dis-played character and to move or copy it (by selecting[M] or [C] in the Toolbox) to another location in thecell.

Draw dotAllows you to draw a dot in the character cell. Youcan select the color (black, white, or reverse currentdot), and the thickness of the dot.

Draw lineAllows you to draw a line in the character cell. Youcan select the color (black, white, or reverse), and thethickness of the line.



Draw boxAllows you to draw a box in the character cell. Youcan select the color (black, white, or reverse) and thethickness of the border, and draw hollow or filledboxes.

Draw circleAllows you to draw a circle in the character cell. Youcan select the color (black, white, or reverse) and thethickness of the border, and draw hollow or filled cir-cles.

Draw brushAllows you to draw with a brush tool. You can selectthe brush thickness and color (black, white, or re-verse) and paint with hollow or filled strokes.

BlendAllows you to blend another character into the currentcell. After selecting the Blend tool, click on anothercharacter from the font to view it in the framing win-dow blended with the current character. Click in theframing window and drag the new character to posi-tion it on top of the current character, then click on[Accept] in the Toolbox to save the blend.

After editing or viewing the bitmap, close the Edit win-dow to return to the ElixirFont main screen.

TransformAllows you to alternate between edit mode and trans-form mode with the current character set or character.See the "Transforming non-AFP fonts" chapter formore information about transformations.



Transform tool

The Transform tool allows you to change the appear-ance of single characters or the entire font.

The transformations you can perform are:Resize Rotate Shift SlantDarken Lighten Underline ReverseFilter Outline Halftone Mirror

Kill tool

The Kill tool deletes or blanks a character from thefont, depending on your selection below the Toolbox.

Character Properties tool

The Character Properties tool displays the CharacterProperties dialog box.

Equivalent ASCII CharThe ASCII representation of the selected character.



Character NumberThe ordinate position of the character in the font indecimal and hexadecimal notations.

Cell WidthThe width of the character cell. Also called the char-acter width or the delta-X of the character.

Baseline OffsetThe distance in dots from the bottom of the characterbitmap to the baseline. The baseline is positive if thecharacter sits above the baseline and negative if it sitsbelow the baseline.

Blanks LeftThe blanks left of the character. This is the distance(in dots) between the left side of the character cell andthe start of the character bitmap.

Blanks RightThe blanks right of the character. This is the distance(in dots) from the right side of the character bitmapand the edge of the cell. If the character has rightkerning, this value is negative and the character ex-tends past the right side of the cell.

Left KerningThe left kerning of the character. This is the distance(in dots) the character extends over the left side of thecell. This value produces left kerning only after thefont converts. The 9700 family of printers does notsupport left kerning.

Bitmap width/Bitmap heightThe width and height of the character bitmap in dots.

Char typeThe type of the character. [Spacing] makes the char-acter a spacing character and [Null] eliminates thecharacter. When you select a [Null] or [Spacing] char-acter, a dialog box with fewer options displays



Floating accentThe flag for distributed printers which instructs theprinter to map accents to a [High] or [Low] position orto assign [No] accent to a character. This option isnot used for the 9700 series printers and refers to theEuropean ISO standard.

Selecting the [Prev] and [Next] buttons displays theCharacter Properties dialog box for the previous andnext characters in the font.

Copy tool

The Copy tool allows you to copy a character into anyother position in the font. Select the character tocopy, then select a target position to which you wantto copy the character. If the target position alreadycontains a character, it is replaced.

You can also copy a range of characters to a new po-sition in a font. Click and <Ctrl>-click to select a rangeof characters and click on a target character cell. Theselected range of characters are copied to new posi-tions starting at the target character cell.

Swap tool

The Swap tool allows you to swap the positions of twocharacters in the font. Use the screen pointer to selectthe first character, then select the second character.The two characters swap positions.



Merge tool

The Merge tool allows you to load another font andcopy the font characters into or replace characters inyour original font. A dialog box displays from whichyou select another Elixir-format font. After font selec-tion, the screen splits into source and target font win-dows. The source window shows the font from whichyou want to merge characters; the target window con-tains the font you originally loaded.

To merge fonts:

1. Select the character you want to merge(source).

2. Select the [Replace] or [Insert] option in theToolbox.

3. Click on the character in the target font youwant to replace or insert a character in frontof.

The character from the source window is copiedto the target window. The Replace operationoverwrites any character in the chosen position ofthe target font. The Insert operation inserts char-acters in the position before the selected charac-ter in the target.

To cancel a selected character, select anothercharacter.

Merging a tall character into a smaller font verticallystretches the cells in the smaller font. See the follow-ing figures for an illustration of the effect of merging atall character into a smaller one.

Sample tool

The Sample tool displays a font sampling pad in whichyou can see how text created with the current font willdisplay at print time.

Use the keyboard or click on the characters in thecharacter set window to place the characters in thesampling pad.

Select [Print Sample] from the File menu to proof printthe sampling pad (when proof printing, text prints asbitmaps).

Click on [Line] in the Font window Toolbar to displaythe baseline when entering characters (or select[Show Baseline] from the View menu).

Click on [Kern] in the Font window Toolbar to see theeffect of kerning character pairs (or select [ShowKerning] from the View menu). The bitmap of thekerned character must extend beyond the charactercell for this effect to be visible.



Font Properties tool <Ctrl> + <F2>

The Font Properties tool displays the Font Propertiesdialog box.

OrientationThe orientation of the font: portrait, landscape, inverseportrait, or inverse landscape.

ResolutionThe font resolution: [240], [300], [480], or [600] dpi.

PitchFixed or proportionally spaced. Selecting [Fixed] dis-plays a dialog box requesting a fixed width value.

LinespacingChanging [Distance Above], [Below], or [Leading]changes the linespacing. To calculate the new linespacing, click on the [Linespacing] button.

Point SizeDisplay only. The point size of the font (a point is 1/72inches).

Pixel HeightDisplay only. The height of the font cell in dots.



Last Character atThe decimal position of the last character. The firstcharacter position is always 0, and the maximum lastcharacter position is 255. If you increase this value,new null characters are added to the end of the font. Ifyou decrease this value, characters are removed fromthe end of the font.

Change cell widthAllows you to increase or decrease the width of everycell in the font by the number of dots you enter. Youcan change the relative spacing between charactersfor the entire font.

Header submenus

Displays the font header information for HP PCL fonts(other options are grayed).

HP PCLDisplays the HP PCL Font Properties dialog box.

Options in the dialog box are:

the typeface name (file name of the font)

the typeface number

the symbol set of the font

the style (italic or normal)



Select the stroke weight (boldness), from [Ultra-Light] to [UltraBold]



6. Transforming non-AFP fonts

This chapter describes how to use ElixirFont to applytransformations to single characters or to all charac-ters in a font.

Transformations are editing functions that change theprinting characteristics of characters. The transforma-tions you can apply are:

Resize, Rotate, Shift, Slant, Darken, Lighten, Under-line, Reverse, Filter, Outline, Halftone, and Mirror.

Some examples of single-character transformationsare shown in the following figure.

To apply a transformation:

1. Select either a single character or the entirefont (<Ctrl>-<A>).

2. Pull down the Transforms menu or click onthe Transformation tool (the top center tool inthe Toolbox) and select the transformationyou want to apply.

3. Select the transformation options you wantfrom the bottom of the Toolbox area.


4. Click on the button in the Toolbox toC

start the transformation.

5. Click on the button in the Toolbox ifyou want to stop the transformation duringexecution.

6. Click on the [Undo] button in the Toolbox toundo the transformation just applied (theundo function does not reverse atransformation that is stopped duringexecution).

The following sections describe transformations inmore detail.

Transformation tooloptions

Resize

This transformation resizes a single character or theentire font.

The current point size displays. Enter a new point sizeby clicking on the up and down arrows (you can onlyresize within an allowable range), or specify horizontaland vertical resize percentages within the allowablerange.

Select the [Filter bitmap] button to remove jaggededges and single bits after resizing. The bitmap fea-tures that are filtered are those currently selected inthe Filter Toolbox. To verify the selected options, se-lect the Filter tool and specify:

Remove single black bitsRemove single white bits

You may want to apply filtering to a single character tosee the effect of different filtering options.

When resizing the entire font, a second dialog box dis-plays requesting resize confirmation. Line spacing,cell widths, and other values are resizedproportionately.



If you are increasing the character size and the en-larged character does not fit in the character cell, adialog box requests confirmation for increasing thesize of the character cell.

Repeatedly resizing the same font significantly distortsthe font and is not recommended.

Rotate

This transformation rotates characters in 90-degreeincrements.

Select [Clockwise] or [Counter-clockwise] rotation.

If you rotate the entire font more than once, cell di-mensions such as blanks left are not preserved, andreversing the rotation does not restore the fontprecisely.

This option does not create a landscape font from aportrait font, or a portrait font from landscape font. Tochange the orientation of the font, modify the orienta-tion in the Font Properties dialog box.



Shift

This transformation shifts a character in its cell. Se-lect a direction to shift (up, down, left, or right arrow),and set the number of dots you want the characters toshift.

If shifting a character extends it beyond its cell, a dia-log box requests confirmation for increasing the sizeof the character cell.



Slant

This transformation is useful for creating an italic ver-sion of a character or a font.

Select the slant direction by clicking on it, then selectthe number of dots by which you want the character(s)slanted.

If slanting a character extends it beyond its cell, awarning dialog box displays.

You should not repeatedly slant characters. Eachslant operation adds distortions (like jagged edges,single bits, etc.) that are compounded with repeatedoperations.



Darken

This transformation darkens (emboldens) characters.

This operation adds one or more dots next to existingdots in the character bitmap.

Specify the number of dots, and the side of the bitmapto which you want dots added.



Lighten

This transformation lightens (debolds) characters.

This operation removes one or more dots near exist-ing dots in the character bitmap.

Specify the number of dots, and the side of the bitmapfrom which you want dots removed.



Underline

This transformation underlines characters.

Specify the position of the underline as above or be-low the baseline, and the distance to the baseline.

You can also specify the thickness of the underline (indots, default 4 dots) and whether the width of the un-derline is across the character or across the cell.



Reverse

This transformation reverses (changes black to whiteand white to black) character cells.

You are prompted for confirmation when you want toreverse the entire font, but not when you want to re-verse a single character.



Filter

This transformation applies filtering to one or morecharacters in a font.

The following figure shows the features that you canfilter.

The effects of the filter are limited. For example, thefiltering result may not be consistent with bits that areon outer edges of the character bitmap. You shouldalways check character bitmaps after filtering and per-forming manual edits.



Outline

This transformation encloses the character bitmapwith a border and reverses the enclosed area.

Specify the outline thickness between 1 and 9 dots(the default is 2 dots).

The following figure shows the effect of outlining.

Halftone

This transformation applies line or shading patterns tocharacters.

You can apply halftoning as horizontal, vertical, andslanted (45o and 135o) lines, and in many shades.

You can specify the line width and line separation indots, and apply halftoning to the character bitmap(foreground) or the cell background.

You can also outline the character bitmap and specifythe outline width in dots.

When halftoning a spacing character, reverse it toblack then apply halftoning to the foreground.



Halftoning is applied to solid black portions of a char-acter. Halftoning a character that is not solid black(for example, a shaded or previously halftoned char-acter) results in halftoning being applied only to theblack portions of the character.

When halftoning an entire font, you may be requiredto adjust some character width settings for correctcharacter fit when placed together, as shown in thefollowing figure.

Mirror

This transformation rotates characters vertically orhorizontally to create a mirror image.

7. Editing Elixir-formatcharacter sets

This chapter describes how to edit Elixir-format char-acter sets that were converted from AFP format usingElixir converters. See the Elixir Desktop and Convert-ers for AFP User Guide for more information aboutfont conversions.

Some examples of Elixir-format character sets areloaded in the drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\ELIXIR directoryon your PC during installation (for example,C0A05570 and C0A05580).

Bounded-box character set names start with C0 andUnbounded-box character sets can start with C1through CG; however Elixir only supports C1, C2, andC4 prefixed character sets, as described below.

ElixirFont supports editing C1, C2, and C4 prefixedUnbounded-box fonts that were converted from AFPformat using Elixir converters. ElixirFont can alsocreate C1 prefixed (0o inline print direction)Unbounded-box character sets. Other inline print di-rections for Unbounded-box character sets can be ob-tained by converting to AFP format and selecting 90o

or 270o directions.

Character set basics

You should refer to the "Font structure" chapter for anoverview of AFP and Elixir-format character sets andto understand the terminology used in this chapter.


Editing Elixir fonts

The ElixirFont font editor functions in two differentways depending on the source of the Elixir font andthe format to which you want to convert the editedfont:

In this guide, Elixir-format fonts that contain only.GLH, .GLY, and .HDR components are referred to as"non-AFP" Elixir fonts. These fonts are created in thefollowing ways:

The Desktop Converter icon was used to createthe Elixir font from a non-AFP source (such asBitstream Facelift or HP).

The Desktop Converter icon was used to createthe Elixir font from an AFP (Bounded-box orUnbounded-box) character set using the "PC-mapped" option.

The font was originally a "non-AFP" font and wasedited and saved using ElixirFont.

Alternatively, if you use the Desktop Converter icon toconvert an AFP character set to Elixir format andspecify the "Full AFP font" option, in addition to the.GLH, .GLY, and .HDR components, the convertedElixir font includes components described in the previ-ous section. In this guide, these fonts are referred toas "Elixir-format character sets".

This tool deletes or blanks a character from the font,depending on your selection below the Toolbox.

Character Rotation(Bounded box character sets only.) The angle throughwhich a printed character is rotated clockwise in90-degree increments, relative to the characterbaseline.

Graphic Char IDThe character identifier (GCID) for each character inthe character set.

A-spaceThe distance from the current print position to thenear edge of the character cell.

C-spaceThe distance from the far edge of the character cell tothe character escapement point (the end of the spacealong the character baseline that is allocated for thecharacter).

Char IncrementThe sum of the character's A-space, B-space, andC-space.

Baseline Offset The distance in dots from the bottom of the characterbitmap to the baseline. The baseline is positive if thecharacter sits above the baseline and negative if it sitsbelow the baseline.

Char indexThe character index number. The first character in afont has a character index of zero.

Raster WidthThe width of the character bitmap.

Raster HeightThe height of the character bitmap.

Char AscenderThe distance from the character baseline to the top-most toned pel.

Char DescenderThe distance from the character baseline to the lowesttoned pel.



Code Point Data for Code PointThe hexadecimal representation of the current char-acters code point.

Options which you cannot edit are grayed.

Copy tool

The Copy tool allows you to copy a character into anyother position in the character set. Select the charac-ter to copy, then select a target position to which youwant to copy the character. If the target position al-ready contains a character, it is replaced.

You can also copy a range of characters to a new po-sition in a font. Click and <Ctrl>-click to select a rangeof characters and click on a target character cell. Theselected range of characters are copied to new posi-tions starting at the target character cell.

Swap tool

The Swap tool allows you to swap the positions of twocharacters in the font. Use the screen pointer to selectthe first character, then select the second character.The two characters swap positions.

Merge tool

The Merge tool allows you to load another font orcharacter set and copy into or replace characters inyour original character set. A dialog box displays fromwhich you select another Elixir-format font or charac-ter set. After selection, the screen splits into Sourceand Target font windows. The Target window con-tains the character set you originally loaded; theSource window shows the font or character set fromwhich you want to merge characters.

To merge fonts:

1. Select the character you want to merge(source).

2. Select the [Replace] or [Insert] option in theToolbox.



3. Click on the character in the target font youwant to replace or insert a character in frontof.

The character from the source window is copiedto the target window. The Replace operationoverwrites any character in the chosen position ofthe target font. The Insert operation inserts char-acters in the position before the selected charac-ter in the target.

To cancel a selected character, select anothercharacter.

If you are merging a character into a position for whicha GCID is already defined, or if you are merging to acharacter with a duplicate GCID, a warning dialog boxdisplays to confirm continuing with the operation afterentering a new GCID, or allows you to Stop theoperation.

If your merge operation is from a non-AFP font, thefollowing dialog box displays.

Because a non-AFP font does not have GCIDs orother information required for AFP character sets de-fined, you must specify a GCID template file (mappinglist) for the information. Elixir provides default GCIDtemplate files for Unbounded-box character sets(C0ADOBE.GL0) and for Bounded-box character sets(C1ADOBE.GL1). Unless you are familiar with GCIDmapping tables, you should use these default map-ping lists when merging from non-AFP fonts.

When merging a character from a non-AFP font, thefollowing dialog box displays to allow you to specify adifferent GCID for the merged character (to avoidoverwriting the current GCID with the new character),or to stop the operation.

Merging a tall character into a smaller font verticallystretches the cells in the smaller font. See the follow-ing figures for an illustration of the effect of merging atall character into a smaller one.

Sample tool

The Sample tool displays a font sampling pad in whichyou can see how text created with the current font willappear at print time.

Use the keyboard or click on the characters in thecharacter set window to place the characters in thesampling pad.

Select [Print Sample] from the File menu to proof printthe sampling pad (when proof printing, text prints asbitmaps).

Click on [Line] in the Font window Toolbar to displaythe baseline when entering characters (or select[Show Baseline] from the View menu ).

Click on [Kern] in the Font window Toolbar to see theeffect of kerning character pairs (or select [ShowKerning] from the View menu). The bitmap of thekerned character must extend beyond the charactercell for this effect to be visible.



Font Properties tool <Ctrl> + <F2>

The Font Properties tool displays the Font Propertiesdialog box.

OrientationNot applicable for AFP character sets.

ResolutionThe font resolution: [240], [300], [480], or [600] dpi.

PitchFixed or proportionally-spaced. Selecting [Fixed] dis-plays a dialog box requesting a fixed width value.

LinespacingChanging [Distance Above], [Below], or [Leading]changes the linespacing. To calculate the new linespacing, click on the [Linespacing] button.

Point SizeDisplay only. The point size of the font (a point is 1/72inches).

Pixel HeightDisplay only. The height of the font cell in dots.



Last CharacterThe decimal position of the last character. The firstcharacter position is always 0, and the maximum lastcharacter position is 255. If you increase this value,new null characters are added to the end of the font. Ifyou decrease this value, characters are removed fromthe end of the font.

Change cell widthAllows you to increase or decrease the width of everycell in the font by the number of dots you enter. Youcan change the relative spacing between charactersfor the entire font.

Header submenus

Displays the font header information for AFP charac-ter sets.

AFP/AttributesDisplays the Character Set Attributes dialog box whichallows you to change attributes for the character set.

Changing character attributes by editing or transfor-mation does not change the corresponding values inthis dialog box. You must manually reset the values.

When you convert an Elixir character set to an AFP-format character set, values in this dialog box are in-cluded in the AFP data stream and read by text for-matters such as DCF.



Typeface NameA description of the current typeface, up to 32characters.

Point SizeThe character set point size.

Font TypeDisplay only. Shows whether the characterset type is Bounded-box or Unbounded-boxor both.

WeightSelect the option that best describes theweight of the character set you are creatingor modifying.

WidthSelect the option that best describes thewidth of the character set you are creating ormodifying.

Character Descriptors(Optional) Select a character attribute.

AFP/Increment Displays the Character Set Increments dialog box.

For Character Rotation(Bounded-box character sets only). Selectthe rotation of the printed characters: [0],[90], [180], or [270] degrees.

Word SpaceThe spacing between printed words, in pels.Enter the number of pels or click on [UseSpace Character]. You cannot use [UseSpace Character] when creating a new char-acter set as a spacing character GCID(SP010000) does not exist.

Figure SpaceThe character increment for the numerals 0through 9, in pels. Enter a value or click on[Use Zero Character] to use the GCID for thenumeral 0 (ND100000). This value is some-times equal to the numeric space character(GCID SP310000).

Default Baseline IncrementThe default baseline increment as set in theFont Properties dialog box [Linespacing] op-tion. You can override the line spacing valuein this dialog box.

Character SpacingSpecifies whether the character set you arecreating or modifying is [Monospaced] (fixedpitch) or [Typographic] (proportionallyspaced).

Char IncrementThe character increment in pels. For mono-spaced character sets, the uniform incrementdisplays. For typographic character sets, thelargest increment (maximum) of the charac-ter set displays.

Baseline OffsetFor monospaced and typographic charactersets, specifies the maximum baseline offsetvalue in pels.



A-SpaceThe Uniform A-space value in pels for mono-spaced character sets and the minimum A-space value in pels for typographic charactersets.

Pel ResolutionFor display only. The pel resolution per inch,multiplied by a factor of ten.

x-HeightThe height in pels of the lower case x charac-ter (GCID LX010000). Click on [Use x Char-acter] to use the standard lower casecharacter height without descenders orascenders.

M-HeightThe height in pels of the upper case M char-acter (GCID LM020000). Click on [Use MCharacter] to use the standard upper casecharacter height without descenders orascenders.



Em SpaceThe character increment in pels of an emspace. An em is a square with sides equal tothe point size. For example, 9 point at 240dpi is 30 pels (240/9=30). An 9-point em is a30 x 30 pel square.

Underscore/WidthThe thickness of the underscore stroke inpels.

Underscore/PositionThe number of pels from the baseline to thetop pel of the underscore stroke, includingthe top pel. A positive value signifies an un-derscore under the baseline, a negativevalue signifies an underscore above thebaseline, and a zero value specifies that theunderscore is on the baseline.

Character Box FormatSpecifies whether the raster-pattern boxesfor the character set are all the same size[Uniform] or are different sizes [Variable].

Box Width/Box HeightDisplay only. For Uniform raster-patterncharacter sets, the Uniform box width andheight display. For [Variable] raster-patterncharacter sets, the [Maximum] box width andheight display.



HP PCLDisplays the HP PCL Font Properties dialog box.

Options in the dialog box are:

the typeface name (file name of the font)

the typeface number

the symbol set of the font

the style (italic or normal)

Select the stroke weight (boldness), from [Ultra-Light] to [UltraBold]



8. Transforming Elixir-format character sets

This chapter describes how to use ElixirFont to applytransformations to single characters or to all charac-ters in a character set.

Transformations are editing functions that change theprinting characteristics of characters. The transforma-tions you can apply are:

Resize, Rotate, Shift, Slant, Darken, Lighten, Under-line, Reverse, Filter, Outline, Halftone, and Mirror.

Some examples of single-character transformationsare shown in the following figure.

To apply a transformation:

1. Select either a single character or the entirefont (<Ctrl>-<A>).

2. Pull down the Transforms menu or click onthe Transformation tool (the top center tool inthe Toolbox) and select the transformationyou want to apply.

3. Select the transformation options you wantfrom the bottom of the Toolbox area.


4. Click on the button in the Toolbox toC

start the transformation.

5. Click on the button in the Toolbox ifyou want to stop the transformation duringexecution.

6. Click on the [Undo] button in the Toolbox toundo the transformation just applied (theundo function does not reverse atransformation that is stopped duringexecution).

The following sections describe transformations inmore detail.

Resize

This transformation resizes a single character or theentire character set.

The current point size displays. Enter a new point sizeby clicking on the up and down arrows (you can onlyresize within an allowable range), or specify horizontaland vertical resize percentages within the allowablerange.

Select the [Filter bitmap] button to remove jaggededges and single bits after resizing. The bitmap fea-tures that are filtered are those currently selected inthe Filter Toolbox. To verify the selected options, se-lect the Filter tool and specify:

Remove single black bitsRemove single white bits

You may want to apply filtering to a single character tosee the effect of different filtering options.

When resizing the entire character set, a second dia-log box displays requesting resize confirmation. Linespacing, raster-pattern box widths, and other valuesare resized proportionately.



If you are increasing the character size and the en-larged character does not fit in the character raster-pattern box, a dialog box requests confirmation for in-creasing the size of the character raster-pattern box.

Repeatedly resizing the same character set signifi-cantly distorts the character set and is notrecommended.

Rotate

This transformation rotates characters in 90-degreeincrements.

Select [Clockwise] or [Counter-clockwise] rotation.

If you rotate the entire character set more than once,raster-pattern box dimensions such as blanks left arenot preserved, and reversing the rotation does not re-store the character set precisely.



This option does not change the inline print directionof a character set. To change the inline print directionof an Unbounded-box character set, use the Desktopconverters to convert the 0o Elixir-format Unbounded-box character set to Unbounded-box AFP format andspecify the inline print direction as X1, X2, or X4 dur-ing conversion (see the Elixir Desktop and Convertersfor AFP User's Guide for more information).

Shift

This transformation shifts a character in its raster-pattern box. Select a direction to shift (up, down, left,or right arrow), and set the number of pels you wantthe characters to shift.

If shifting a character extends it beyond its raster-pattern box, a dialog box requests confirmation for in-creasing the size of the character raster-pattern box.



Slant

This transformation is useful for creating an italic ver-sion of a character or character set.

Select the slant direction by clicking on it, then selectthe number of pels by which you want the character(s)slanted.

If slanting a character extends it beyond its raster-pattern box, a warning dialog box displays.

You should not repeatedly slant characters. Eachslant operation adds distortions (like jagged edges,single bits, etc.) that are compounded with repeatedoperations.



Darken

This transformation darkens (emboldens) characters.

This operation adds one or more pels next to existingpels in the character bitmap.

Specify the number of pels, and the side of the bitmapto which you want pels added.



Lighten

This transformation lightens (debolds) characters.

This operation removes one or more pels near exist-ing pels in the character bitmap.

Specify the number of pels, and the side of the bitmapfrom which you want pels removed.



Underline

This transformation underlines characters.

Specify the position of the underline as above or be-low the baseline, and the distance to the baseline.

You can also specify the thickness of the underline (indots, default 4 dots) and whether the width of the un-derline is across the character or across the cell.

Underlining a SPACING character is not recom-mended unless you change the Code Page name. Ifyou convert the character set to AFP format and up-load it to a host, not changing the Code Page namemay affect other applications on the host.



Underlining the entire character set

Special consideration must be given when underliningan entire character set or coded font.

When printing on AFP printers, sometimes a calcu-lated value is used to separate words rather than us-ing the spacing character. In such cases, applying theUnderline transformation to the spacing character inthe Elixir character set will not translate to the AFPcharacter set, and spaces between words on the AFPprintout will remain blank.

To allow translation of the underlined spacing charac-ter, you must turn off the variable spacing field in theassociated Code Page.

When underlining the entire character set, if only thecharacter set is loaded, the following dialog box dis-plays with a warning to turn off the variable spacingfield on the Code Page used with the character set.

Skip transform of Spacing CharactersDoes not modify the Code Page and underlines allcharacters except spacing characters.

When underlining a character set, you should create acustom Code Page by copying an existing IBM CodePage and renaming it (you can use the custom CodePage with other character sets as well). Modifying anexisting IBM Code Page may affect the printing of re-sources created with page composition packagessuch as DCF/SCRIPT which use the calculated vari-able spacing value for word spacing.



Reverse

This transformation reverses (changes black to whiteand white to black) character cells.

You are prompted for confirmation when you want toreverse the entire character set, but not when youwant to reverse a single character.

Reversing the entire character set

Special consideration must be given when reversingan entire character set or coded font.

The effects of the filter are limited. For example, thefiltering result may not be consistent with bits that areon outer edges of the character bitmap. You shouldalways check character bitmaps after filtering and per-forming manual edits.



Outline

This transformation encloses the character bitmapwith a border and reverses the enclosed area.

Specify the outline thickness between 1 and 9 dots(the default is 2 dots).

The following figure shows the effect of outlining.

Halftone

This transformation applies line or shading patterns tocharacters.

You can apply halftoning as horizontal, vertical, andslanted (45o and 135o) lines and in many shades.

You can specify the line width and line separation inpels, and apply halftoning to the character bitmap(foreground) or the raster-pattern box background.

You can also outline the character bitmap and specifythe outline width in pels.

When halftoning a spacing character, reverse it toblack then apply halftoning to the foreground.



Halftoning is applied to solid black portions of a char-acter. Halftoning a character that is not solid black(for example, a shaded or previously halftoned char-acter) results in halftoning being applied only to theblack portions of the character.

When halftoning an entire character set, you may berequired to adjust some character width settings forcorrect character fit when placed together, as shownin the following figure.

Mirror

This transformation rotates characters vertically orhorizontally to create a mirror image.

ascenderThe part of a lowercase letter which extends abovethe x-height. Another name for a spacing character.

baselineAn imaginary line which is used to position a charac-ter. Characters may rest on the baseline or extendabove or below it. Characters are normally positionedso that their baselines are aligned. Such charactersare said to be base aligned.

bitmapA two-dimensional array of dots or pixels which isused to represent each character in a computerizedfont. Each black dot in a bitmap is represented in thecomputer as a number 0, and each white dot is repre-sented as a number 1.

cellAn imaginary frame surrounding a character whosewidth equals the set width and whose height equalsthe linespacing of the font.

cell heightThe cell height of a character is equal to the linespac-ing of the font.

cell widthThe cell width of a character is equal to the set width.

character cellSee cell.

character headerA record stored in the computer for each characterwhich contains information such as the set width andthe position of the descender relative to the baseline.

leadingThe amount of white space placed at the top or bot-tom of characters to prevent overlapping betweensucceeding lines. Usually linespacing is equal to thepoint size plus the leading.

linespacingThe distance between succeeding lines of text whenprinted on a page. In other words, the linespacing isthe distance from the top of the characters on one lineto the top of the characters on the next line.

mirroringThe flipping of a character so that its top becomes itsbottom or its right becomes its left.

nonblank characterA printable character with a bitmap containing a char-acter or symbol.

null characterAn unprintable character that occupies an unused po-sition in a font.

overstrikeTo print characters over each other.

pageA number of characters and their cells which fill ascreen.

picaOne pica is 12 points or 1/12 of an inch. The length ofa printed line of characters is measured in picas.

picture elementSee pixel.

pitchA fixed pitch font has the same set widths for all char-acters. With proportional pitched, the set widths varyfrom character to character.

pixelThe smallest mark that can be printed. A pixel issometimes referred to as a dot. Character bitmapsare made up of dots or pixels. The word pixel is a con-traction of picture element.

pointThe size of the characters of a font when they appearon paper is given in points. One point is 1/72 of aninch or 0.352 mm.

point sizeThe number of points from the top of the ascender tothe bottom of the descender. Sometimes the pointsize is given in dots or pixels, and in other instances, itis given as how many points (or units of 1/72nd of aninch) the font will have when the characters areprinted on paper. Thus, if the characters in a font are,on average, 1/2 inch high when printed, the font issaid to have a "point size of 36" or to be a "36 pointfont."

portrait orientationRefers to printing from left to right across the width ofthe page.

reverseTo switch a character from black on white to white onblack, or vice versa.

serifA short stroke that projects out from the main part of acharacter. An example of a serif is the chisel-like at-tachments on the end of a Press Roman uppercaseletter I. Fonts without these strokes are called sansserif.

set widthThe distance from the start of the character to the be-ginning of the next character.

spacing characterA blank or all white character that is used for position-ing characters on a line. These characters do thesame thing as a space key on a typewriter.

styleA modified version of a typeface. An example of astyle is Italic. Thus, a Press Roman typeface may bein the Italic style.

typefaceA unique design for printed letters, such as PressRoman.
