ELITES SHOULD COME FORWARD TOMANAGE THE RELIGIOUS SET-UP

Progress of an individual and the society depends on theirright thinking and right way of working. A needy mancan be offered some immediate help but such supportdoes not bring about a permanent solution. Medicinesalone cannot cure a patient unless he also exercises selfrestraints in his overall way of living. If we follow only thetreatment part of prescription and ignore the restrictionsadvised by the physician, the disease will continue to re-cur again and again. Therefore just offering doles to thepoor is not the real solution of poverty. By giving food,we can, temporarily satisfy a poor man’s hunger, but it isnot at all possible to go on feeding such a man indefi-nitely. Poverty will vanish only when the poor becomeindustrious and put an effort to earn their livelihood. Thisholds good for all problems. Self help is the real help.

Mental sickness is the root cause of the miseries anddeprivations in the life. The only remedy is to reform andrefine the thinking process of man. In fact there cannotbe a nobler task than purifying one’s thinking and cor-recting one's erroneous beliefs and wrong notions. Ac-quiring knowledge and awareness of soul and God andimparting these to others are the noblest of boons. TheBrahmins of old use to take a vow to do so throughouttheir life, were respected as God. Today such persons

have become a rarity. To make up for this deficiency elitesshould come forward to take up this noble task. For thewelfare of this world, dedicated workers who can per-form the true Brahmin’s rite awakening the masses, arethe urgent need of the hour.

THE ONLY BASIC CAUSE FOR THIS ILLS OFSOCIETY

Now a days, everybody is suffering from troubles andtensions. Everyone seems to be falling an easy prey tothe onslaughts of disease, worry and financial crisis. Mis-trust, suspicion, apprehension, deception,, defiance, in-gratitude and undiscipline are the order of the day. Thevices like corruption, black marketing, bribery, cheating, dishonesty, self-gratification, addictions, selfishness andgangsterism reign supreme in society. Groupism, nepo-tism and manipulation are becoming rampant in politics.Civil war-like conditions seems spreading fast on thebasis of caste, language, region etc.

We don’t find even an iota of austerity, sacrifice, restrainand moral restitute in the religious field; only trickestry, ostentations and hypocrisy dominate the scene. Moraldegradation is fast spread in every walk of life. The socalled pundits, Mahants, priests and monastics have be-come the privileged class. No one is ready to dedicatehis life for the good of society. Internationally, exploita-tion and subjugation of one country by the other throughdiplomacy and deceit are openly practised. When evil

manage the religious set-up 5forces have ascendancy manifesting as injustice, crime, idleness, undiscipline and violent passions, we can ex-pect only unrest and conflict to reign this world, makingthe globe a veritable hell. If this state of affairs continuesunchecked we will be forced to commit mass suicidethrough deadly nuclear weapons resulting in the totalextinction of human species (homosapiens) and all otherforms of life. In such dire circumstances, those who re-ally care for human civilization and human survival, mustcontribute their mite towards warding off this catastro-phe.

ONLY MATERIAL PROGRESS IS NOT SUFFI-CIENT

Despite the fact that it has been an era of stupendousmaterial development, tragically mental peace and satis-faction in an individual as well as community life havesuffered a severe blow. This is the result of the lack ofsimultaneous expansion and growth of inner self. Simul-taneous enrichment of material and spiritual aspects areindispensable for the integrated life of man. Abundanceof material comforts alone does not bring happiness; italso needs refined emotions and clear seeing vision. Er-roneously, in modern time attention has been entirely fo-cused on material growth and the means thus acquiredhave been utilised in increasing the creature comforts. The result is an insatiable greed, gross self-indulgence,an inflated ego, deceit and crass self-centredness.

6 Elites shold come forward to

A weak donkey cannot carry a load of heavy decora-tions for a very long time, similarly, the body also cannotsurvive the unrelenting pressures of excessive materialfacilities and sensual indulgence. If education and intelli-gence are used only for satisfying the ego, the mentallevel is bound to deteriorate. Science has endowed uswith material progress, but the spiritual growth has beentotally ignored. Had the soul also grown along with thepiling up of luxuries, the humanity would have beenspared from the prevalent ills of immense suffering, quar-rels and malice. Had the available resources been usedin a wise manner for healthy progress, this world wouldhave become a heaven.

ONLY RIGHT THINKING AND RIGHT EFFORTCAN REVERSE THE DOWNWARD TREND

If the money, labour, resources and mental capabilitiesengaged in unwarranted activities, are diverted to con-structive tasks, they will surely transform the world. Fortycrore persons round the globe are associated with mili-tary activities. If the huge funds spent on the maintenanceof a large number of soldiers and the people engaged inmanufacture of armaments are utilised for eradicatingdisease, poverty, unemployment, and in the spread ofeducation and improvement of medical, it will produce amiracle.

If the various mass-media like cinema, drama, dance, literature, radio and television etc. which contribute im-

manage the religious set-up 7mensely towards the moulding of thoughts and feelings, stop propagating vulgarity and try to promote righteousfeelings, cooperation, idealism, morality, amity and hu-manity, then within a few years nobility and divinity willmanifest in the human scene. If large sums of moneybeing spent on intoxicants like tobacco and liquor arediverted for production of organic fertilizers, nobody willever starve in this world.

If the criminals, thieves, killers and dissolute persons di-vert and utilise their talents energy for the welfare of thecommunity, every wicked man would emulating Balmikiand every immoral woman would become Amrapaliand thus diffuse happiness and radiant zeal themselves allaround. If all news-papers and the print media utilise theirinfluence in promoting global fraternity, morality and ide-alism, millions of people living in this world will adopt alife of high idealism, enabling them to perform nobledeeds. If the administration earnestly sets its goal to servemankind, these countless number of leaders can ensure abright future for the public. If the huge religious networkof 8 million saints, hermits, sermonising priests, ritualistsand merchants of religions who now exists as parasites ina poor country like India, take up the responsibility ofpropagating righteous values and ideals, religion will trans-form itself from a bane into a boon.

THE GREAT ERROR

Looking at the all pervasive lack of peace and harmonyin humanity, despite the creature comforts produced byscientific advancement, it is evident that something is ba-sically wrong somewhere. If this is not identified and cor-rected, misfortunes and calamities will increase in the sameproportion as will the material progress (materialistic ad-vancement). The senseless accumulation of nuclear weap-ons has created the danger of causing total extinction ofcivilization evolved over the ages. Criminal offences haveproliferated with an alarming momentum. People insteadof extending mutual help are after each others blood. Thewidely noticeable tendency of duplicity and deceit "hon-eyed tongue, a heart fall of gall" has rapidly grown. Man'sutter selfishness has poisoned all relationships and noweven people in the same family look at each other withsuspicion and distrust. The intimate and generous humanrelationships, the feelings of mutual trust, are graduallyvanishing. Mere religiosity of hollow exterior pomp andshow have risen like effigies of Ravan.

These symptoms of utter dissolution are making the fateof human race more and more grim. The scientific andeconomic advances which should have made the worldhappy and radiantly alive, have actually made health, harmony and fraternity their victims. If this situation con-tinues, the future would be gloomy indeed.

manage the religious set-up 9TRANSFORMATION IS POSSIBLE

The question now arises whether the existing trend canbe halted, reversed and turned towards creativity?Whether the depending darkness can be converted intoa glowing dawn? Whether this hell can be transformedinto a heaven? The answer can be a strong ‘yes’ but theprecondition is that the elites take up the responsibility ofdiverting the tides of time into constructive channels?

NAR-PASHU (THE ANIMAL-MEN) - A BUR-DEN ON THE PLANET

The elites whose thoughts and feelings are committed tobasic (human) values, are the life of a society. Undoubt-edly such persons are few, but whatever number, theyhave the capabilities to work wonders, once they plungethemselves into this noble task with necessary zeal anddetermination.

By and large, people exhaust all their energy in just earn-ing their livelihood and bringing up their children. Pres-sure of high soaring prices and rising expectations to-gether with the limitation of skills and resources, renderthe poor fellows fully drained off. With passage of time, the number of children increases and gradually the loadbecomes more than what a man can carry. The unbear-able burden of heavy family responsibilities coupled withthe difficult task of arranging the means to discharge themsatisfactorily, does not allow them to think about com-

10 Elites shold come forward to

munity development or to contribute for the upliftment ofsociety. Their thoughts encompass only the bodily com-forts, sensual gratification and maintenance of family, vastmajority of humanity belongs to this category and theycan be termed Nar-Pashu (the animal-man). They liveanimal like lives.

This section of society merely increases the population, and does not make any meaningful contribution for theupliftment of society. They simply add to the alreadydaunting problems of humanity. Poverty and unemploy-ment in the society increases due to them. Superstitions, irrational traditions and evil tendencies are fostered bythem. The society and Government, spend lot of energyin just maintaining their present level of living. Therefore,it cannot be expected from these people that they will beinstrumental in bringing any transformation.

EVEN LESS CAN BE EXPECTED FROM NAR-PISHACH (THE MONSTER-MEN)?

Another section of society is that which is endowed withboth intelligence and strength, but they use these only forself-aggrandisement. They draws pleasure in accumulat-ing wealth, exhibiting it , recklessly indulging in the luxu-ries money provocate. They are not satisfied with whatthey deserve but are avaricious like demon to snatch otherpeople’s share. To this end they use all sorts of foul meansof cheating, tricks, exploitation, abduction, torture etc. They are extremely miserly and cruel. They hve the ma-

manage the religious set-up 11nia for amassing wealth and possessions not only for them-selves, but also for their coming generations, mindful ofpains and miseries of the world. They have no concernfor h society. They are confined only to their petty selvesand 'self interest' is the decisive factor for them to under-take any task. They worship God only to seek worldlyfavours. They lack the feelings of generosity and cour-age. Though such people are not many, but even in smallnumbers they are a source of great harm to society.

The first group can be called the Nar pashu (the ani-mal-man) and the second Nar Pishach (the monster-man). Being parasites on society, these two feed on andruin the society. Therefore it can not be expected thatthey will be useful for any reformation process. Instead, they violate the rules and norms of society and thus arethe problem creators. They do not have any fear of law.All the evils connected to muscle and money power growand are nurtured here only. If the first group can be madea little more thoughtful and the second can be controlledand disciplined, it would be a real significant achieve-ment.

CENTRE OF HUMAN HOPES

The third and a small group is that which can be calledthe elites, whose thoughts and feelings extend beyondthe animal desires and vested interests to the higher realmsof religion, society and culture. Elites are those who aremoved by the prevailing pains, problems and evil ten-

12 Elites shold come forward to

dencies plaguing the society and come forward to con-tribute their mite for their elimination. Only this elite groupthinks sincerely and seriously about God, religion, be-nevolence and patriotism. They are by nature wise, vi-sionary, generous kind hearted and broad minded. Theytoo face the problems of earning their livelihood, butconsider them of primary concern. They are satisfiedwith the minimum that is essential for leading a simpleand healthy life of an average citizen and for this reasonthey require much less to earn their livelihood and therest of the time is used in doing something good for soci-ety. They do not carve for a luxurious living and feelcontended by living like the millions of common personsin the country. Their sole aim is to live a life of high andshining character which acts as a light-house for others inrough seas of life.

This elite group is the conscience of human race. A bodywith a dormant soul turns lifeless. If the soul becomesmorbid, undoubtedly, the body feels sick. And if the soulleaves the body, it dies. If the elites are of high character, enlightened, capable and active, the society advancesrapidly. In contrast when elites think a lot, have highideals; but do not translate their thoughts and ideals intoaction, the society is doomed to dissolution and decline. When the elites misuse religion for their selfish motives, the public loses faith in religion, falls prey to charlatans, misses the direction and goes berserk. Where the com-mitted elites are not much in sufficient number, the evils

manage the religious set-up 13flourish, the system decays and the society is in for disas-ter. Therefore, since times memorial, the true strength andprosperity of a society or a nation has been determinedby the quality its elite.

THE GLITTERING STARS OF HISTORY

The Ancient History of India has been glorious , and thebasis of this honour was the contribution from the versa-tile giants, philanthropist, devoted religious teachers andvisionaries. Our history has lauded saints like Vashishth,Bharadwaj, Atri, Yagyavalkya, Jamdagni, Narad,Vishwamitra etc.; religious dutiful kings likeHarishchandra, Shivi, Karn, Dadhichi, Moradhwaj,Yudhishthir, ; sages like Buddh, Mahavir,Shankaracharya, Ramkrishna, Vivekanand, Ramdas,Nanak, Kabir, Govind Singh,; reformists like Gandhi,Dayanand, Ram Mohan Rai, Ishwar Chandra; lead-ers of freedom struggle like Gokhale, Tilak, Lala LajpatRai, Malviya, Das, Subhash, Nehru, Patel,; revolu-tionaries like Azad, Bismil, Bhagat Singh, Savarkar,Arvind, ; the women like Laxmibai, Ahilyabai,Sarojani, Gandhari, Sita, Ansuiya, without whom therewould have been no history, no honour. No nation is ad-judged great on the basis of its wealth, literacy, art orarchitecture. It is adjudged great on the basis of a galaxyof noble, great men and women of clear vision and he-roic deeds which has produced. It is such men and womenof high and noble ideals, endowed with great vision, whoachieve something abiding and worthwhile.

14 Elites shold come forward to

Any perceptible change or reform is possible at this junc-ture only by multiplying the number of dedicated elites. Ifsome one is moved by the plight of the nation, religion, society and culture and if he has the will to uplift them, hemust, with all his might, start identifying, organising andactivating this class . If this becomes possible, all the prob-lems in every field will be satisfactorily solved.

It has been an historical fact that whenever these eliteshave deployed themselves with commitment, the outcomehas been miraculous. Buddha with his disciples stood upfirmly to change the environment which brought an endto the ailing and corrupt trends of that time. Thousandsof persons could emerge from the masses which wereengrossed in luxuries. Severing themselves from luxuries, they abandoned the worldly ties and preached Buddhismnot only in India but throughout Asia. The enlighteneddisciples of Christ could baptise one third of the worldpopulation only within a span of 2000 years. Gandhi, inan India crushed and subdued by a thousand years ofslavery, could charge the atmosphere, with only a hand-ful of companions, so much, that it forced the British toquit. The followers of Karl Marx were able to establishhis concept, his thoughts, in the one third of the Worldand the rest of the world is being influenced by it in oneway or the other.

manage the religious set-up 15THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ELITES :

It were only a few elites behind all the political, social, religious and economical revolutions the world has wit-nessed. We owe them all the scientific inventions and dis-coveries too. The selfish and self centred men, who re-main engrossed in merry making and fulfilment of theirbase desires, never feel moved to commit their lives forhigh purposes. Soldiers, only after overcoming the greedand fear, develop a strong sense of patriotism and winthe battle. Despite the best of artillery and means, a fright-ened army loses. In all walks of life the elites are seeninspiring and leading men to achieve wonders.

A man is capable of far more than what he normally does.Mostly he spends his energy in fulfilling the demands ofthe body and for petty selfish gains. A human mind al-ways remains engrossed in the twists and turns of desiresand fancies. Cherishing and accumulation of worldly pros-perity may be an indicator of social status, but most ofthe men fail even in this. Even those who are able to pileup and enjoy the wealth, are left empty handed at theend of life, leaving their accumulations behind as bonesof contention for their inheritors. If an intelligent man couldtake a lesson from transient nature of all created things, itwould take very little of his time and energy to earn hislivelihood. And then the rest of his energy can bechannelised for better and greater goals of well being ofhumanity and rather than wasting it in the routine triflesand follies. In fact this is the best use of life. Whosoever

16 Elites shold come forward to

has marched with a commitment towards it, has realisedthat his life has become worthwhile and purposeful.

COURAGE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

In the last freedom struggle, the people, could over ridetheir personal interests, faced imprisonment, participatedboldly in agitations and sacrificed their lives for the sakeof the country. They were the people amongst whommany became our national leaders and glory was be-stowed on them. Gandhi, Patel, Nehru, Das, Malviyaetc. were just ordinary lawyers by profession. Had theyremained in their professions only, they could have man-aged a small house and a meagre saving for their chil-dren. Kabir, Raidas, Dadu and Tulsi would have remainedpoor people with no identity, had they hesitated in leav-ing their parental profession. Truly wise do have to sacri-fice in the beginning but in the long run the are in no waythe losers. What they ultimately receive is much morethan what they have sacrificed.

Today’s greatest need is to arouse and rear wisdom inhuman beings. The virtues of nobility, compassion andkindness should be inculcated and encouraged to bloom. The moulding of men into good human beings is os fargreater importance than establishing nuclear reactors. Ifwe could build up an army of ideal social workers, thewhole environment will gradually be transformed. If thesecommitted men stand up and resolve to bring about revo-lutionary changes, the irrational customs, evil traditions,

manage the religious set-up 17narrow-mindedness and crass selfishness will be washedout of the social system. When the zest for high idealsand feelings of fallowness will pervade the society, thecircumstances which today appear so difficult to copewith, will turn favourable.

THE CALL OF THE HOUR

Those who love idealism, a quest for ethics, a longing forbasic values along with a deep strong spiritual urge, shouldtenderly nurture these urges. If one understands the trueaim of life, and thinks it right to follow the foot steps ofgreat men, he should venture out. Only altruism leads togreatness. Those who only think and do nothing can sim-ply be dubbed as hypocrites. If we have faith in basicvalues, we should adopt them in our practical life. Thiswill further strengthen our faith. Today the human race isat the crossroads which a choice to determine its des-tiny. It has to choose, without delay, either the path ofintegral development or the utter disaster. There is nomore time to waste. The choice has to be made immedi-ately. Times are critical. We must awaken to our duties, put our intelligence to task and gear up to do somethingworthwhile without any further delay.

The first step towards it is to restrict our desires andambitions, shake off laziness and get rid of fear. Theminimum that meets our basic needs should be consid-ered as sufficient. Our time slot for various activities mustbe fixed as eight hours for sleeping, eight for earning,

18 Elites shold come forward to

four for the miscellaneous activities and remaining fourhours for the welfare of the society and we must follow itstrictly. This can be done by all the busiest person aswell as one who has minimum resources. We will fall inthe category of Nar Pashu if we waste all the twentyfour hours in toiling and indulging in the lower craving ofthe flesh. One must set a part time and resources forwellbeing of the community.

For those who have inherited more than enough to meettheir basic needs, it becomes irrational to work for re-muneration. Such a privilege has been granted by theAlmighty, so that they utilise their life for the service ofmankind, without bothering for their livelihood. If theydo not do this, they will be treated as culprits in the eyesof God. Those whose children have become independ-ent or who get pensions, should also spend all their timeand energy for the society. Those who are unmarried andthose who have few children, should consider seriouslybefore adding to their responsibilities. They should thinkof the futility of additional burden and should wiselychoose to adopt a purposeful life of service to the soci-ety. This is the crying need of the hour.

ABANDON THE GREED OF WEALTH ANDPOSSESSIONS

The amount of time, energy, ability, knowledge and wealthwhich is at our disposal should be mainly used for thewelfare of the society, considering these assets as gifts of

manage the religious set-up 19God and ourselves as trustees. It would be in our owninterest and in the interest of future generations, to upliftthe society and make it full (a visible manifestation) ofpeace, love, harmony and understanding. Even if we our-selves are cultured and prosperous, it is not possible tolive peacefully in a vitiated and polluted environment fullof hatred turmoil and turbulations (turbulence). In con-trast, in a cordial and civilised society we can live happilyand merrily even in a state of material scarcity. There-fore, even from the view point of our own enlightenedself interest it would be appropriate that we utilize a partof our resources for the welfare of the community andthus further the objective of social reconstruction.

The foundation of Yug Parivartan (the change of era)will be laid by the visionaries whose conscience feelsconcerned about the society and true religion. Rather thanenjoying more and more facilities such people should learnto share and care. They should root out of their psychesthe cravings for self indulgence and wealth and join theranks of the elites. Where there is will there is a way; sogoes the saying. If something great captures our imagina-tion, we will feel no dearth of time or means to achieveour noble goals. Leave aside the ignorant masses, eventhe elites spend lot of energy simply in making grand plans, debating, arguing and criticising others. And when cru-cial time arrives demanding their positive contribution, they grin, make lame excuses and run away from theirresponsibilities. This state of affairs needs to be changed.

20 Elites shold come forward to

Dedicated and enlightened people should not only talkabout ideals and values but should also come forward tomatch their words with deeds. Thus alone will the newera dawn.

DETERMINATION MAKES EVERYTHINGPOSSIBLE

When a firm-willed person can attract many compan-ions, associates and friends so easily, when gamblers, drunkards and cheats can have many friends, why can'tthe elite do so. If the small groups of dacoits can createterror over large areas why the groups of right thinkingpeople cannot do something. Ember of devotion is verypotent, wherever it starts burning, it spreads fast like jun-gle fire. The celebrities who resolved to reform the soci-ety, have always marched alone. People raised voicesagainst them. They were humiliated and criticised but bytheir firm determination they could work wonders. Thisis the path open to all those possessing devotion. “Thetime is unfavourable, the people are not good, the soci-ety is backward, nobody listens to us” , are the wordswhich reflect the despair, dejection and lack of determi-nation.

Those, who are committed, can do wonders. Nothing isimpossible for them. They are able to grow plants onrocks, can extract oil from sand, and grow vegetationon barren land. A man who is determined can do anywork in any sort of circumstances.

manage the religious set-up 21Those who have the courage and determination, shouldsolemnly pledge to do everything they can towardsawakening the masses. Time is fast changing now. Goneare the days when eloquence alone could influence. Nowa person will be adjudged by his actions. Therefore weshould immediately get down the field and begin the serv-ice of mankind from platform of transformed religion.

IMPACT ON EMOTIONS

There are only two ways of influencing the public mind atlarge; one is politics and the other is religion. Both havetheir own limitations and utilities. The administration, economic policy, curbing crimes, enforcement of law, education, public transport, scientific researches, devel-opment, construction of roads and bridges etc. whichinfluence our material life, fall under the purview of poli-tics. The political leaders remain busy with all theseactivities. Religion touches the emotions, develops faithin ethical values and inspires people to adopt them as away of life. Observance of celibacy, fasting and wor-shipping cannot be imposed by Government through fram-ing rules to the effect. Such inspiration can be inspiredby religion only. The Government can send thieves tojails but only religion is capable of transforming them intosaints and seers like Valmiki and Angulimal.

22 Elites shold come forward to

POLITICAL SYSTEM VERSES RELIGIOUS SET- UP

Guided by the political imperatives, political leaders haveto quite often adhere to unfair ways and means like crook-edness, cruelty, false propaganda, hypocrisy, discrimi-nation and clandestine operations etc. And that is whythe public may recognises their usefulness in smooth run-ning of society, but never accepts them their guides so faras their faith and emotions are concerned. This need ismet by the religious leaders. Generation of trust in ideal-ism, promotion of virtues and motivation to cooperateand serve humanity can only be done by religion. Its set-up is meant to meet this end.

Due to the lure of power and pelf, a large number ofpeople are tempted to join politics. Quite often the numberis much more than required. Today political field witnessessuch a huge rush of aspirants for seats of power. Itpresents the spectacle of an overcrowded train in whichthere is no scope of any new passenger getting in. On thecontrary true religious orders are notable to attract per-sons of impeccable character and devotion to their ranks. The elites should use this avenue to fulfil the great need ofthe hour, by joining the large numbers and authentic reli-gious movement.

The original vision and set-up of spirituality inspired reli-gion is so flawless and systematic that on its basis, wecan confidently nurture the inner self to pursue the path

manage the religious set-up 23of high idealism. The judicious use of religion and itsphilosophy can influence the public mind and emotionsto enable them to practise high ideals and observe basicvalues in daily life. The fundamental problem of today ishow to wean away human beings from the grip of crassmaterialism and generate interest in them for holinessand spirituality. None of the profane views, philosophies, concepts, doctrines or theories are capable of accom-plishing it. Only the true religion can do it.

FROM VICIOUSNESS TO VIRTUOUSNESS

It is true that today gangsterism is dominating even thereligious scene. Frauds and hypocrisy are conspicuoushere. Scoundrels are in majority and treat religion as acheap business. The innocent public is being exploitedfor their faith and religious sentiments. Rather than get-ting any benefit, they are trapped in the mesh of illusions. That is why educated and thoughtful persons are hesitantin associating themselves with religion, and hence main-tain a safe distance from it. A thoughtful analysis will re-veal that just decrying or ignoring religion, is not a solu-tion. Elites should come forward and launch an cam-paign for driving out these wicked elements. They areentrenched because sincere and intelligentsia not enterthe field. Viciousness will vanish when virtuousness makesan appearance. The entry of morally strong and inspiredpeople in this field will expose and drive away the cheats. The society will also not take any time in rejecting them.If the righteous people will keep on hesitating to join, the

24 Elites shold come forward to

forum will remain open for misuse by the vultures whowill make it all the more stinking.

It is not enough just to point out the defects, some fairalternative has brought forth. There can not be a vacuum. If a good thing is not available, people are bound to adoptwhatever rubbish is in front of them. If we want to createa dislike for the vices, we should present the virtues. Manypeople feel disgusted and grumble about the malprac-tices prevalent in the religious field but they are not ableto come-up with a noble alternatives. An alternative is amust.

What is the true spirit of religion? How should the reli-gious leaders and preachers plan and how should theyrun their organisation? If an example of this is presentedbefore the people, they will themselves be able to distin-guish the bad from the good. Today in the absence of analternative, the people are forced to accept whatever isavailable and remain complacent with it.

SHED HESITATION

The educated and learned are hesitant to associate them-selves with religious affairs because of two reasons, firstlydue to fear of being categorised as idlers and deceitfulby the public; and secondly, because they will have towaste much time in the absurdities of Karmkands (reli-gious rituals). If we go a little deeper, both these appre-hensions unfounded. The spinning on Charkha (Wheel)

manage the religious set-up 25was considered a menial job, as it was done by the poor, the widows, weavers etc. But when Gandhi ji took it intohis hands, people like Nehru and Patel started doing itand Charkha became the symbol of nationality, prideand patriotism. When the personages like Buddha,Shankaracharya, Gandhi, Mira, Surdas, Tulsi,Vivekanand and Ramtirth joined the ranks of religion, millions were overwhelmed with religious fervour. We feelgrateful to them while following their foot-steps. The fol-lowers of Buddha included Ashok, Amrapali, andAngulimaletc. They were earlier leading unrighteous livesand they did not have any faith in the religion, but theinfluence of the enlightened one (The Buddha) transformthem into saintly persons. Non-violence and religion hadno place in Nehru’s life, but he was transformed underthe magnetic influence of Gandhi and eventually becamehis right hand in the struggle for freedom.

Today the field of religion is considered as very inferiorand worthless because it is full of notorious people. Theyhave brought disrepute to religion. Due to this, peopleraise eyebrows and look at this useful and holy field ofhuman aspiration with disdain and distrust. The only wayto bring about a change in this scenario is for the noblepeople to enter this field and cleans it of all choss. Thiswill help remove the misgivings about religion in the pub-lic mind and establish that religion is not just a bundle ofsuperstitions and tricks but is a training ground for innergrowth. Freeing religion from the grip of charlatans will

26 Elites shold come forward to

be possible only when they are exposed by the right per-sons taking their rightful places in the religious field. If thisis not done, the deceitful and addicted Sadhus foretellingthe lottery results and the priests claiming to provide thepassport for Heaven, will go on exploiting and mislead-ing the masses. Until true saints, true Brahmins and truereligious leaders, do not come up, we will not be able todethrone these liars and frauds.

THE STRENGTH OF MASSES AND ITS UTILI-SATION

The energy and resources of the public are utilised inplenty for so-called religious programmes. Millions arespent in the name of temples and monasteries every year.Expenditure incurred on religious fairs and feasts comesto crores. 80 lakh people depend on this sector for theirlivelihood. If vast network of religion and the abundantresources available at its disposal, could be utilised con-structively, religion would become the most favourite, glo-rious and honoured institution in this world. Then one willbe proud of being called a religious person. It is a differ-ent job to collect money for any community work, but ifwe, through religious platform, undertake the task of re-fining the human souls, the public would not let us feelany scarcity of funds for this noble purpose.

Gandhiji fought the battle of independence after becom-ing Mahatma. His declarations of Gau-Raksha (protec-tion of cows) and foundation of Ram Rajya (Kingdom

manage the religious set-up 27like that of Lord Rama where everybody was happy),were part of the freedom struggle. He included Kirtanand Bhajan (Chanting of religious songs) in his move-ment, as he feel the pulse of Indian society. And thus, byadopting suitable ways, he could win the battle of inde-pendence. Since others could not do the same, they kepton beating about the bush while Gandhiji could correctlyidentify the problems and unerringly marched towardsthe target. To fulfil the need of a revolutionary transfor-mation of individuals as well as the society and the na-tion, no other medium will be as effective, efficient andswift as the religious set-up.

RELIGION BE USED FOR PUBLIC EDUCA-TION

True religion is the best and the easiest tool for the devel-opment of a person, a family and the society. There aremany ways to influence the mind. Through the teachingof subjects like, Economics, Sociology, Politics etc. theparticular knowledge can be imparted, but if we wantthe teachings to touch the heart, spirituality is the onlyanswer. The science which has the capacity to touch thehuman heart, and mould it by sublimating the emotions isknown as spirituality. Nothing else can be effective inelimination of erroneous beliefs and establishment of right-eousness in life. We must appreciate the importance ofspirituality and religion and use these as major tools forthe regeneration of society.

According to materialistic economics the keeping aliveold and unproductive animals is a losing proposition, hencesuch animals should be slaughtered so that meat so ob-tained will be a direct profit in addition to the indirectsavings on the expenditure which was being incurred ontheir feed and fodder and the value of the occupied space.Where money is the sole concern, the services renderedby such animals in the past have no meaning, i.e.- “if grati-tude is a losing proposition, we should prefer to becom-ing ungrateful”. Materialistic economics will emphases onthis point. Killing of old and unproductive animals shouldnot be stopped on the pretext of kindness or religion. Ifwe go by this concept, our old parents would meet thesame fate. Something akin to it actually happened in Hit-ler’s Germany and Mao’s China. Today all this is notbeing done openly because by a large masses still haverespect for the so-called old values and concepts. Butlater, when the materialistic economics will have the finalsay, the butchering of old persons of society will bestrongly recommended, the way it is being advocated forthe old cattle now.

If material benefits are accorded primacy in life, the scopefor propagating spiritual and ethical values become lim-ited. Man’s materialistic interests and merry-making isadversely affected, once he begins practising basic val-ues, exercises restraints and dedicates himself to the serv-ice of the community. Materialistic concepts of sociol-ogy, economics and history can support these values only

manage the religious set-up 29half hearted. They do not promote the virtues of sacrificeor sharing. These concepts do not accept even the exist-ence of soul. They dismiss as figments of imagination beliefin the existence of God, the theory of Punarjanm (re-birth), Karmaphal (law of sowing and reaping) and theParlok (astral relms) and propose that life ends withdeath, and hence why should one be prevented fromdoing anything wrong for the sake of bodily comforts? Why should not a man hoodwink the law and enjoy luxu-rious life? How can such persons be persuaded to liveby ethical values of universal good, service to man kind, contentment, sacrifice and foregoing one's rights to helpothers? The materialistic theory, though it propounds theinterests of the nation and development of society is un-able to explain why at all a man should take pains for thegood of the society. According to this prevented viewhuman beings are basically individualistic and thereforethey naturally put their own interests above those of so-ciety.

Having denied the existence of soul, materialism cannotnurture the inner consciousness and can not encourage aperson to follow the noble ideals and aims. The onlyweapon left with it is to force a person to do somethingfor the welfare of the state or society is coercion or bymaking man a slave of the rules, the pressure can be ex-erted on him to undertake reluctantly some steps forcommunity welfare. But it will lack the deep emotions, profuse warmth, and the bubbling enthusiasm which be-

30 Elites shold come forward to

come part of the nature of persons practising ethical andspiritual values voluntarily.

If we seriously ponder over these basic questions we willhave to admit that only the religion and spirituality caninfluence and inspire a man to create an idealistic envi-ronment in the society. Therefore fundamentals of reli-gion should be the foundation for all our activities, all ourteachings and all our plans. Whatever is to be establishedas tradition, should have religion and spirituality at its core.To lay the foundation of a new world order, to reversethe evil trends of the times, the first necessity is of emo-tional refinement transmutation. This is the purpose be-hind the Gyan Yagya and initiation of Bauddhik Kranti. This entire framework of thinking, planning and execu-tion can be raised on the basis of religion and spiritualityonly.

If we miss this fundamental point, and follow the materi-alistic approach, all our efforts will abort like Govern-ment’s social welfare plans and we will also end up withadvertisement and paper work only. If the implementersare selfish, immoral and narrow-minded, their greed willgobble up all plans, however attractive they may be onpaper. There is no guarantee of success of any plan insuch a situation. Any great deed can be completed suc-cessfully only by people imbued with ethical values. Ifthis is absent, all the ability, talent and education will bewasted for amassing personal gains, at the cost of soci-ety. We see this happening every day in this world. If our

manage the religious set-up 31mission also functions on the same pattern, despite a dif-ferent label on it, we will also follow the same gloomyend.

It has been said thousands of times, and need repetitionagain and again that to create an ideal man and society,to establish moral values, there is no other way exceptspirituality. It is not unlikely for this materialistic attitudeeven to suggest in the not too distant future to poison ourold parents like unproductive old cattle and bury them ina manure pit. People with such perverse attitudes wouldsuggest that we should not cremate or bury the dead asthe cremation requires wood and burying requires landand labour. Financially, they would argue, both these waysof disposal are uneconomic and hence it would be logi-cal to put the dead in a dung heap to convert the bodiesinto manure. We must confine such views only to thematerialistic affairs. When the questions of faith and ba-sic values arise, spirituality and ethics are the only sureguides.

The promotion of Gyan Yagya is the first step towardssensitising and ennobling dull emotions. Only the emo-tionally sensitive people can be motivated to join the crea-tive and missionary programmes. Whatever we teach orpromote should have the elements of faith and reverencein it. The philosophy of life and spiritual concepts pro-pounded by the Rishis could be of immense help in ourcampaigns. The emotionally sensitive people can be eas-ily influenced, convinced and motivated. There is no ob-

32 Elites shold come forward to

jection to use of intellect to make people emotionally sen-sitive, but glorifying intellect as the supreme instrumentfor enlightenment will not be able to kindle the nobleemotions and inspire people to live altruistic lives fired byloving kindness and compassion. Here only faith and ide-alism can be effective.

It is not right to think that religion and spirituality are notprogressive and are just a bundle of superstitions andconservative traditions. It is true that such perversionsdo exist in these fields, but progressiveness is far moreextensive than blind orthodoxy. We should not think thatthe practices of our forefathers do not warrant any re-thinking as to their relevance or otherwise in today's con-ditions. Like Swan who can separate water from milk,we must scan all old traditions and accept only thosewhich are useful and progressive. With such a midset, even in the so called conservative scriptures and sects,we can discover progressive elements in plenty, whichsupport and promote the enlightened aims of YUGNIRMAN YOJNA. Only useful portion of the ancientliterature and old customs should be highlighted and theirrelevant, useless and meaningless portions should beignored. The problems are bound to crop up if whateverhas been written in old scriptures or has been in practice,is conceded as a gospel truth, showing utter contempt tologic rationality and the needs of the hour. Blind faithinvolves many risks. With a catholic outlook and atti-tude, we will come across nuggets of truth in all faiths

manage the religious set-up 33and philosophies which we can incorporate in our visionfor global unity. Swan is the carrier of Ma Gayatri (thepresiding deity of (righteous) knowledge). It is a sayingthat swan possesses the capability to separate the milkfrom water. Once we develop a similar out look, all thereligious faiths and scriptures will have much in commonwith the doctrine which we are proclaiming.

To create an emotionally charged environment,Karmkands (religious rituals) have their own importanceand the teachings imparting during this time have a lastingeffect, like iron which can be easily moulded when hot.We will have to train a force of competent and efficientpersons who are well versed in decorating the siteaesthetically, in creating a charming environment and inaddressing the gathering, keeping in mind their receptiv-ity. Responsibility lies with the branches of the mission totrain such volunteers. In order to fulfil these needs, therelevant books on Karmkands and lectures have alreadybeen published by Yug Nirman Yojna. Thus, it just needsa little practice and study to develop the skills to performthe karmkands.

If the various celebrations like birthdays, marriage anni-versaries, Sanskars of children, marriages andVanprastha pravesh etc. are solemnly performed in areligiously surcharged environment and the significanceof these rituals and their close relation with the enfold-ment of human life is carefully explained, we can educate

34 Elites shold come forward to

people effectively. These teachings can guide, both theindividuals as well as families to uplift their lives.

Usually people are at leisure during the holidays for fes-tivals. Full day may not be off, but the morning hoursbefore going to office or shops, and the evenings are usu-ally free for everyone. As per the convenience, the timeslot and the venue of the celebrations can be decided. Ifa person attends regularly such functions on all the festi-vals of the year and attentively listens to the discourses,he can find answers to a number of work-a-day prob-lems of life and inspiring them to solidly contribute to-ward eradicating social evils.

Sanskar ceremonies would be quite useful in providingknowledge to those who usually remain ignorant of theirduties and responsibilities towards their families. Everynow and then, in one house or the other in a village orMohalla, such sanskar ceremonies should be organisedmotivate people to understand better the nature and ide-als of family life. To infuse a new zeal, celebration of birth-day has its own significance in a person’s life. Sanskarceremonies of marriage anniversary can inculcate betterand deeper understanding between husband and wife.

Beside these, there are many other established ways toelevate people’s morality in an emotional atmosphere. The SATYA NARAYAN KATHA is very popular in HinduSociety. The Pandit highlights the story only. WhatLilavati, Kalavati and king Tungadhawaj actually did and

manage the religious set-up 35which story they actually heard, is nowhere narrated. YugNirman Yojna has interpreted it in a refined manner thatTruth (Satya) be taken as God (Narayan) and stressingthat truth be actually practised in daily life and a vow istaken to follow the ethical values. This teaching is alreadypresent in the story. This should be narrated by an im-pressive speaker in a way that it touches the hearts of thelisteners and enlightens them.

If during a Ramayan week in the morning and eveningsessions, the collective recitation of the text is done anda discourse on the illustrious life of Ram is given, it willcertainly motivate the masses to led righteous lives .

Likewise Gita Week can also be observed. It is not pos-sible for everyone to recite and understand the SanskritShlokas properly. Its poetic translation suitable for col-lective recital has already been published. If one Shlokais explained properly every morning and evening in theGeeta Week, we have the advantage of listening to 14shlokas during the week with commentary there in. Thiswould not only reveal the essence of Gita but also ofhuman life. The book ‘stories of Gita’ has already beencomposed to meet this purpose.

The great scriptures like Gita and Ramayan are testi-mony to our rich cultural heritage. If these weekly reli-gious celebrations of seven days become popular in so-ciety, it will pave the way to cultural and moral rejuvena-tion. Instead of long and windy speeches in huge gather-

36 Elites shold come forward to

ings, the teachings in such a small gatherings may proveto be more effective. People may come willingly to listento a Satyanarayan Katha while they may not exhibitmuch interest for a political rally. The conservative Pan-dits who are afraid of losing their Dakshina (offerings)may create hindrances but they must be made to under-stand that our aim is not to snatch their livelihood but tocreate a religious environment in the society.

80% of India’s population lives in the villages and major-ity amongst them are uneducated. The epic stories andlegends are the only means of education for these illiter-ates. It is useless to deliver them a scholarly lecture oneconomics, politics or sociology. Their receptivity wouldbe the best if knowledge given to, has a religious flavour. The mental level of the vast majority of population is suchthat if they are told about today’s problems in a religiousbackground, and are exhorted to practise high values andideals in daily life, the efforts will bear fruit. Gandhiji, had understood this secret, so he lived and stressed saintlyvirtues in the political field and it enthused the masses.Contemporaries of Gandhi ji were equally competent, but due to his saintly virtues he enjoyed a special place inpeople’s hearts.

The Indian public had high esteem for Maha ManaMadan Mohan Malviya and Lok Manya Tilak, whichcan be attributed to their religious conversions and con-duct entwined with their political activities. Even if, wedo not agree in principle about the significance of religion

manage the religious set-up 37for a common man, looking to the mindset of the Indianpublic, we will have to consider it a vital determinant forthe successful implementation of any policy. Pandit Nehrudid not agree with the principle of non-violence, but heaccepted it as the right policy, after watching the successof Gandhiji’s Satyagrahmovement. Even those who havea difference of opinion on the use of religion for awaken-ing the masses, should at least agree to the fact that it willnot be possible to impart any effective teaching to thebackward public and rural masses of our country with-out having a religious fervour in it.

In order to bring a complete renaissance in the nation, the desired orientation must have a religious flavour in it.

RELEVANCE OF RELIGIOUS ORGANISA-TIONS

There must be no hesitation in spending time and moneyto promote and maintain religious outfits and Karmkands. It is like a capital investment in agriculture or a businesswhich ultimately leads to profit. Mere sermonising willnot help in refining the thoughts and feelings. For this acreative and psychologically effective planning has to bedone. People launching agitations often organise hugeprocessions and rallies. When they are questioned aboutthe rationality of such heavy expenditure, wastage of timeand labour on leaflets, pamphlets, big posters and cutouts etc., they say that they use these as mediums to arousepublic emotions in their favour. Similarly Satyagrah and

38 Elites shold come forward to

civil disobedience observed during freedom struggle couldalso be dubbed as futile because the value of salt pro-duced was not even one fourth of the cost of the woodconsumed to boil the brine water. But all this was essen-tial to motivate the people and stir-up their feelings andthe aim was not doing salt business.

Congress has been spending approximately fifty lakhs ofrupees on its annual general body meetings and so do theother parties. The religious functions are also very costly,as are the exhibitions, in which lot of money and resourcesare spent. Many tools used by the Government for aware-ness generation about its rural uplift programmes e.g. cin-ema shows, are no less expensive. If we take into ac-count the expenses being incurred on meetings, confer-ences, organisation of various games and sports events,we may call it a wastage, but in reality it is not so. It willnot be a bad bargain if large amounts of money and timeare spent for inspiring noble ideas. Very little money isspent on organising Yagya. It has its scientific benefitstoo. Even if we do not consider them and just view it asanother public function for religious purpose, the expendi-ture incurred will be far below that on other gatherings.People overlook the amount of money they waste onaddictions and ostentations, and a little expenditure onreligious chaos their flak. The reason is that they do notunderstand its utility properly. If these religious activitiesare made as mediums to awaken the society and rebuildthe nation, the expenditure incurred will be welcomed by

manage the religious set-up 39all sensible men and there will be no question of calling ita waste.

THE FOCUS MUST BE ON THE AIM

The aim of all religions is to infuse noble thoughts andfeelings among men and rituals are just its symbols. Nowa-days, aimless rituals dominate the religious scene, hencevoices is raised against their uselessness. If these ritualsbecome capable of uplifting the society, and are used forinstilling values of morality, good conduct and patriot-ism, they will be supported and welcomed by one andall.

Today, variety of religious festivities like RamayanSammelan, Gita Samaroh, Bhagwat Katha,Satyanarayan Katha, Kumbh, Tirth Snan, ShodashSanskar, Ram Lila, Ras Lila, Yagya, fasts, festivals, fairsetc. are organised from time to time. If the significance ofthese rituals is properly explained it will serve the aim ofmoral regeneration of society. Public education relevantto the present times can also be fitted in these religiousactivities. Indeed the Rishis having prophetic vision, notonly by putting their spiritual insights in the scriptures, butalso popularised the significance of religious festivals andrituals to enable the common masses to assimilate theirspiritual insights. It is very beneficial to public gatheringson such occasions. The mindset of people in these reli-gious gatherings becomes more receptive, to the teach-ings of basic human values and ideals. Such gatherings

40 Elites shold come forward to

are of paramount importance for upliftment of society bysublimating their feelings and emotions.

The way in which these religious functions are arrangedthese days, is really deplorable. The atmosphere lacksolemnity. These are organised by unenlightened and un-educated people who have no understanding of true re-ligion. Naturally, therefore, the environment in these reli-gious f unctions lack solemnity and piety. If the manage-ment and planning of these functions is undertaken byprogressive minds having faith in and reverence for thereligion and the arrangements made aesthetic refinementand culture, even a small function will be extraordinarilyattractive, enjoyable and a source of inspiration. It is afact that where the volunteers of Yug Nirman Yojna havestarted celebrating birthdays, marriage anniversaries etc.in an appropriate manner, an environment of religious fer-vour promoting unity has been witnessed. If all other cer-emonies are also observed, the public mind will experi-ence a new enthusiasm and vigour. For setting the back-ground for Vichar Kranti (upliftment of thoughts) theseprogrammes are of immense value. This can be realisedonly by attending these functions and listening carefullyto what is said.

Based on my experience of the past forty years, I canempathically state that only this will be the most effectivemethod for awaken up and sensitising the emotions ofthe masses for the rebuilding of the nation. From my ex-perience, of remoulding the life styles and personalities

manage the religious set-up 41of lakhs os people I can say with confidence and con-viction that if more and more elites join this field and planto use religious set-up for awakening people, unimagina-ble miracles will occur, which can not be even thought oftoday.

THE EMERGING LEADERSHIP

The responsibility to lead the nation in the right directionhas to shift from the political leadership to the elites, intelligentsia, religious teachers and nation builders whowill not only deliver sermons, but will also concretelymanifest the high ideals, and values of religion in theirlifestyles. The time is not far off when religion will leadpolitics. Once these religious teachers are able to influ-ence and inspire the public minds, they will guide politicson righteous lines.

Religiously, sacrifice is to dedicate oneself to the nobletask of awakening the society after managing one's ba-sic needs. Those who want to devote their whole life tosuch a noble cause, are assured that they will not starve. The Indian society which can provide money in plenty tothe 80 lakhs idlers, claiming to a loft the flag of religion, will not keep its true servants, mentors and guides hun-gry. Those who cannot afford full time, can spare at leastfew hours daily for the service of society. After spending8 hours in sleep, 8 hours in earning livelihood and fourhours for other activities, four hours are still left. If theyresolve firmly to dedicate these four hours for awakening

42 Elites shold come forward to

the masses using religious set up as a tool, it will workwonders. They can train many more like themselves andcan launch many constructive campaigns.

Tormented humanity is craving for such learned, moti-vated and dedicated workers to come forward to per-form their role in nation building. Among such personsthe most important are you, the reader. Go through theselines and endeavour boldly to do something concrete.Further guidance and help can be obtained from SHAN-TIKUNJ, HARIDWAR.

MAY HIGH IDEALS AND ASPIRATIONSFLOURISH

Man, by nature, is discontented. He wants to rise to thehighest heights of his cherished ambitions and uses vari-ous ways and means to achieve his ends. He strives toearn more and more money, indulges in endless sensegratification, to exhibits his superiority by pomp and showand tries to earn cheap popularity. But the noblest en-deavour is to devote his God gifted talents for the wel-fare and upliftment of the individual and society. Theonly way of Communion with God is to make our maxi-mum contributions towards making this world a betterand a happier place. Such spirits of sacrifice and serviceto mankind is the highest attribute of a true devotee ofGod. The people who devote lot of time in singing prayers, chanting of Mantras and telling of beads but remain un-moved by the pain and suffering of humanity, are not thetrue devotees of God. Their belief that God is pleased by

manage the religious set-up 43flattery and eulogies is false. God loves purity of feelings, the only manifestation of which is to contribute more andmore towards the welfare of human beings. To servehumanity and to promote moral values, is true austerityand the real service to God.

There cannot be a better compliment for a man than tosay that he has dedicated his life to the service of hu-manity. Such great men make their lives exemplary andbecome a source of inspiration to others. Majority of thetalented people waste their lives in just earning livelihood, indulging in sensuous pleasures and pathetic attachmentto the family. How one wishes they had not have wastedtheir lives in these childish acts, and had done somethingto make it meaningful. There are many unfortunate peo-ple, who despite of enough resources, facilities and time,do not possess the greatness and generosity to share theseGod-given gifts with their less fortunate fellow humanbeings. They do not leave behind any trail of good deedsto make them memorable.

Every awakened person should endeavour to let loosethe bonds of selfishness and also earnestly pray to Godto help him in the process. This is true Mukti (salvation)in this life and to achieve this, is equivalent to attainingGod. Wisdom demands that we make proper use of ourtime and resources. Our surplus resources, after meetingthe basic needs of family, should be utilised for altruisticpurpose. In fact, the rituals like pilgrimages, dip in theholy waters, visiting shrines and Brahma Bhoj are not

44 Elites shold come forward to

the true acts of piety and charity. In today's context thebest form of charity will be the efforts put to awaken andsensitising the society which has lost its vigour as well aswisdom.

An emotionally sensitive person is an embodiment of anangel. If something could be done to transform theanimality of human beings into rationality and nobility, this will be a real altruism. Today, there is an urgent needof lakhs of dedicated people to take the responsibility ofawakening and sensitising the dulled emotions of the publicthrough missionary campaign. The elite must come for-ward and bear this responsibility and make their livesglorious and meaningful.

EVOLUTION OF A DIVINE MISSIONChronological Compendium

The divine soul of Pt. Shriram Sharma Acharya descended onSeptember 20, 1911 as the son of Pt. Roopkishor Sharma andMata Dankunvari Devi in Anvalkheda (Dist. Agra). That hissaintly heart breathed for the welfare of all living beings wasclearly expressed, since his childhood, by his altruist service ofthe poor, weaker and down trodden ones around him. MahamanaMadan Mohan Malviya bestowed the initiation of GÄyatrÅMantra on him when he was 9 years old. January 18, 1926, onthe auspicious day of Vasant Panchami, the sacred flame of thedÅpaka (lamp) flashed the subtle body of his Guru – a great yogiof the rishi age – during his GÄyatrÅ SÄdhanÄ. This had sparkedthe unfolding of the divine origin and purpose of his life andenlightened it with the grace and guidance of his Guru. [Thisakhand dÅpaka is kindled since then and is enshrined atShantikunj, Hardwar.]

The next 24 years of his life were devoted to ascetic endeavorsof 24 MahÄpuraÇcaraÉas –– each of 24 lacs GÄyatrÅ MantraJapa (the highest kind of spiritual sÄdhanÄs of GÄyatrÅ). He hadalso sincerely participated in the freedom movement of India1

under the noble guidance of Mahatma Gandhi during this pe-riod while continuing with his altruist services to the societyand attending to the familial duties too.

The unique experiment of VicÄra KrÄntÅ –– gradual refinementof thoughts, righteous transformation of attitude and sublimetransmutation of human psychology up to the high realms ofspirituality –– was initiated by Acharya Sharma from the day hewrote the first issue of Akhand Jyoti in 1937. The subscriptionsof this magazine (in Hindi and translations in English and tens ofregional languages) have expanded exponentially since then….

His wife, Smt. Bhagavati Devi Sharma was also born in 1926 –the year, when the afflatus of his Guru was realized and the year, which is described by Sri Aurobindo as that of the renaissanceof divine force on this earth. Ever since their marriage in 1943,this rishi couple dedicatedly pursued the noble mission forarousal of human glory and revival of divine culture.

Pt. Sriram Sharma had established the Gayatri Tapobhumi atVrindavan Road, Mathura and performed the purÉÄhuti of hismahÄpuraÇcaraÉas there in 1953. He had organized a grandGÄyatrÅ Yagya in 1958. This GÄyatrÅ Yagya was a unique ex-periment towards renascence of spirituality in human life. Thisalso initiated propagation of the knowledge of GÄyatrÅ Mantraand Yagya in scientific light and laid the foundation of YugNirman Yojna –– architecturing of a bright era of moral, cultural, intellectual and spiritual evolution. In another couple of yearshe had translated the entire Vedika Literature in Hindi and pre-sented the first ever, comprehensive volume on the science andphilosophy of GÄyatrÅ Mantra and GÄyatrÅ SÄdhanÄs. Savantslike Dr. S. Radhakrishanan and Acharya Vinoba Bhave hadhonored his contributions as historical and recognized him asVedaniÑÖha .

The saintly lives of Acharya Sharma and his wife, the spiritualcharge of their personalities and the inner power of their sacredlove for all beings, had attracted all the readers of Akhand Jyoti, and all those, who had attended this yagya, to work for thenoble cause of his great mission. This is how the “larger family”kind of organization –– called “Gayatri Pariwar”, came intoexistence. This has now expanded across the globe beyond thebarriers of religion, creed, caste, sex, socioeconomic status oreducational background.

Acharya Sharma –– the rishi of this age, had projected the YugNirman Yojna in 1962 as determined plans of his divine missionof ushering into a bright era. The period of 1971-1990 has wit-nessed remarkable accomplishments of his life on multiple fac-ets. He had climbed the arduous and mystic heights of the Hima-layas several times and stayed there for specific sÄdhnÄs as perthe guidance of his Guru. He pioneered the resurrection of therishi culture by simultaneous renaissance and expansion of thereformative and constructive endeavors of all the rishis of thevedik age.

He instituted the mission’s fraternity at Shantikunj, Hardwar asan academy for moral and spiritual awakening and training andits research wing Brahm Varchas as a center for creative integra-

tion of the modern science with spirituality, in 1971 and 1979respectively. Regular short-term and long-term interactive train-ing programs for –– personality development, spiritual refine-ment through GÄyatrÅ SÄdhanÄ and perfection in the art of liv-ing, commenced at Shantikunj in the early eighties. The 2400Shaktipithas spread across the country also became functionalas distributed centers for social reforms and training of PragyaYoga under the banner of the mission with this advancement.

Around the same time, Gurudev Shriram Sharma wrote the PragyaPurana as the 19th in the series of the eighteen Puranas of theVedika Age. This was another remarkable addition to his monu-mental contribution of over 3000 books and volumes on thegamut of topics concerning human life. Mass education fromreligious platform and efforts for uplifting the status of womenin India gave revolutionary boost to the reformative and con-structive programs of the Yug Nirman Yojna in this period.

During 1984-1986, he endeavored the unique spiritual experi-ment of sukÇmÅkaraÉ ––subtlization and sublimation of vital forceand physical, mental and spiritual powers. He authored a spe-cial set of 24 books (KrÄntidharmÅ SÄhitya) highlighting thefuture of the world and conveying the message of time to pre-pare us for the realities stored in the distant depths of the 21st

Century….. On the 2nd June, 1990, he left the physical sheath ofhis being and magnified his sublime powers up to the higherrealms of divinity in order to enlighten the subtle world of peo-ple’s thoughts and sentiments……

There after, Mata Bhagavati Devi had guided the series ofAshwamedha Yagyas, which accelerated the global expansionof the mission with great impact, in the critical juncture of thedecade of change of a millennium and change of an era. She toojoined Acharya Sharma in the subliminal domains of divinityafter leaving the physical body on the 19th September 1994.

The light of righteous knowledge and human glory kindled bythem continues to illuminate the excelling path of their greatmission and promises the descent of “The Age of Truth” in theyears to come…..
