Research

Looking at the existing product in Craft Victoria to start my research.

As can be seen the products on shelf are unique and all of them are meaningful and have the story behind it.

The target market will mainly be female in the age of 20-35.

Design ConceptFrom the products that are in store I start to think of the possible item that are suitable to be put on the shelf that will fit the target market.

I start to explore the possible item to be produced, starting from bookmark, key chain, vase, ceramics products and any other decorations. Keeping in mind that the product will have the crafty feeling but produced using the technologies introduced.

Experimentation - Technology UsedChoosing one type of the flowers I researched, which is orchid, I bought it and by using the handheld 3D scanning device, I scanned in the real flower to keep the organic shape of it, rather than making it from 3D program without any references, which will loose the details and the originality of the flower.

These are the flowers that I brought to class for scanning, There are some details that lost during the scanning, however the organic shape of it are still presents after the scanning.

Using the program Geomagic Studio to fill in the holes/ parts that was not scanned in prop-erly to create a filled parts which can then be printed out.

The file fixed was saved as .STL file to be used for printing using UP! 3D Printer for experiment.

NOTE : The real product will be produce with coloured powdered 3D printer with the colour that was added to the file by using Autodesk Maya.

Experimentation - Result Produced

First printing failed due to the wall thickness which was too thin to be printed on the machine for the mock up.

However, for the real product I will still use the thinner wall thickness, as it can be produced by the machine.

I tried printing the mock up again after increasing the wall thickness, it almost suc-ceeded, however because of the complex shape and the way it printed one petal of the flower was not printed out correctly.

So I deleted the other part of the flower and left with the missing petal, and use it to print it out again to create the complete flower.

I tried different orientation for the printing, again because of the complex shape.First orientation was not working well as it did not have enough support at the bottom. However, second orientation works out well with a bigger surface area at the bottom for the support.

Mock-up

The model printed out in abs are coloured with spray paint. The outer petals with same colour and the inner petal (lip) with different colour to make it more interesting, which will then be combined together.

Packaging

The packaging was designed to be low cost and avoid drawing the attention from the product, as the product should be the priority for the sales.

So I kept it simple with meaning of the flower as the background.Printing it on a thicker card with two holes which can be make with hole pucher.A bigger hole is provided so it can be hang during the market day.

Price Range

The price rage for the product will be about $15-25 for each item considering the printing fee of it.

Price shown in the picture is for the half finished product, considering the cost of it half done, added with the packaging and the labour, i.e: the time comitted for this product.

ReflectionThrough this elective I learnt more about new technologies and devices which we have never used before, for example : the hendheld 3D scanner and the Up 3D printer, which I have seen but have never fot the chance to use it.

I have also learnt new sofwares, such as Magics, Geomagic and Maya. Even though I can only do the basic with it, but I have the basic knowledge about the type of file it use, it can modify and what can the softwares do.

Some failures which I encountered along the way taught me about the capability about the technology and the machines. This will be very helpful in the future if I am using any of these machines.

The most important thing will be to learn how the real business works, and how to actually deal with these situation in real life.
