New buildings - Shipyard

New buildings shipyard We must strongly underline that the Elysator does not replace any traditional conservation liquid, antifreeze or and flushing liquid during the building period and start up of the machinery prior to delivery. It is entirely the shipyard / shipbuilders property and responsibility to perform this procedure. When all machinery is prepared to be taken over, the Elysator can then be taken into use with “ non” chemical water, and the maintenance to be followed

Warranty. The anodes are designed to last a number of years, and are therefore dependent on the conductivity and volume of the water, which is to be treated. It will be to the benefit of the user/owner that the water should be drained down, and renewed with new fresh water without chemicals at the start up of Elysator. If this is done, the producer then guaranties the living time (functioning) of the anodes to minimum 3 years. If the anodes are consummated before in spite of renewal of the water, new anodes will be delivered free of charge.

Functioning. The function of the Elysator is based on the anodic/cathodic principle i.e. by letting a less noble metal (magnesium) to be sacrificed (corroded) instead of the system itself. During the corrosion process of the anodes, oxygen will be consummated creating H2O, and magnesium hydroxide. The Elysator tank is built up as a cyclone filter & magnet which will sediment impurities .

THE ELYSATOR IS NOT AND SHALL NOT BE SUPPLIED WITH EXTERNAL VOLTAGE. When installing the Elysator, the entire system will be protected against corrosion. Even aluminium and aluminium alloys are protected.

The following is achieved: Increased pH value (aprox. 8,5-10) Magnesium hydroxide Precipitation of sludge Cyclonfilter, magnet De-aeration (oxygen consumption) New water H2O Protective layer Oxide incrustation Low conductivity (50-200 uS/cm) Sulphate & chloride sedimentation The purpose of the Elysator system is to protect against corrosion and precipitation of sediments, which in turn gives a better, economic, safer and more environmental protection of the plant. And absolute no chemicals is longer necessary.

Installation / Components. The Elysator delivery consists of the following:

1 PC Airvent 1 PC Water counter 1 PC Regulating valve 2 PC Plugs 3 PC Ball valves 1 PC Milliampere indicator (analogue) 1 PC Circulation pump (boiler systems) 1 PC Mounting package (pipe, fittings, non-return valves etc.) optional1 PC Digital indicator with connections for alarm Hi-Lo optionalSpare parts on request: One milliampere meter, water counter, one set anodes optional

Cooling water systems

Cooling water systems (closed systems reheat & preheat. etc.)The Elysator to be mounted as shown on the illustration (fig. 1) in a by-pass position preferably over the main pumps, discharge line to be connected to the lower half (inlet) and suction line to upper half outlet. The inlet/outlet not in use are to be plugged (only on type15,25,,25, 50, 75 and 100). The water flow to be adjusted with the regulating valve after the water counter, while the ball valve on the inlet remains full open. Pipes to be of mild steel(galvanized pipes Is not permited) and with diameter not less than 1” Elysator to be installed as close as possible to the connection point, and as low as possible in the system.

For high range medium speed engines with attached HT and LT pumps and separately driven St-By pre-heat pump, 2-two separate Elysators to be mounted 1-one for each system. The pipe connection to be such as preheat pump gives flow through the Elysator when working / operating.

that no air pocket will be built up inside in the Elysa-

tor, avoid cavitation in circulation pump and that the

existing sludge in the system will enter more easily /

faster into the Elysator. Some boiler plant might have

been fi tted with the anodes built-in in the hot well (feed

w.tank). PS ! If it`s not possible to install the Elysator

below hotwell, there should be made a “goose neck”

(above hight of hot well) to avoid any air inside the

Elysator. Notice that hot well temperature to be kept

from 90 to 95ºc. When boiler is idle the boiler should be

topped up and if possible a circulation should be es-

tablished between hot well and boiler(s). If the boiler is

not under pressure then the Elysator circulating pump

can be fi tted with a recirculating line to the Boiler fi lling

line with a valve.

Running

Digital indicator

Running.

Before start. A water sample to be taken on a clean distilled bottle and sent to a laboratory or IWTM A/S for physical analysis. Make sure the Elysator is correctly installed and that the Elysator is correct calculated for the water volume.

Start up.Open the inlet valve (lower half) slowly while outlet remain closed in order to permit all air to enter out through the de-aerator. When there is no more whistling from the de-aerator, open the outlet valve and adjust for correct flow according to fig.3. 1-one step on the counter (0,001) gives 1-one litre. Correct direction is clockwise on the counter. If not, water counter is opposite mounted, or the water flow through the Elysator is wrong. Check out that the indicator gives a reading (to the right), if not the cables are opposite or broken.

When using the digital indicator, this can either replace the analogue or be mounted in serial with the analogue. (When mounting in parallel only half the current will be read out). The indicator can either be installed in the control room or nearby the Elysator.

Running and maintenance practice

Running and Maintenance practice.Draining for sludge is to be done frequently after experience obtained. Normally 1-once a day in the beginning. Depending on the condition of the system the anodes might have to be taken out several times in the beginning for «cleaning off» the insulating glazed layer, which might occur as a result of remaining chemicals in the system.

Renewal / cleaning of the anode. When the indicator is more or less on the zero point (to left), the anode might been corroded away or an insulating layer is covering the anode (or the entire water system has been COMPLETELY passivated), so the galvanic current is minimal.

Step by step 1.0 Inlet and outlet valves to be closed. Attention to warm parts & water!!!1.1 Drain valve to be opened, (for faster emptying unscrew the de-aerator) 1.2 Remove insulating cover for access to manhole / flange. 1.3 Release cables gently. 1.4 Lift out flange and release anode from flange. (Not valid for type 25-50 and 100) 1.5 Clean the anode(s) by means of using a sharp steel edge, knife etc. 1.6 CAUTION!! DO NEVER USE A ROTATING BRUSH OR EXPOSE THE ANODES FOR

WELDING. 1.7 When mounting back new or cleaned anode, use always-correct 10 mm and 15 mm

wrench, and keep attention to the insulated bolt through the flange. 1.8 Clean the Elysator internally with cold water (no chemicals). 1.9 The Elysator to be reassembled and adjusted to correct flow (one step on 0,001 counter= 1 litre.)

The anodes when opened for cleaning, should not be dismantled from the anode stack, but instead cleaned with the sharp edge of a knife while still in the stack. If dismantled from the stack, the washers and nuts can be spoiled and may need replacement. The stack is designed so that the anodes should not be dismantled for the life of the anodes, so that the tefl on washers and nuts etc last the lifetime of the anodes. We recommend that the Elysator is opened up and cleaned once every 4-week.However, this is up to the general condition of the system. But, Ignore of maintenance will lead to Non functioning.

Page 11: Elisator Running and Maintenance

Replacing the anode

Replacing the Anode

If the indicator of the instrument is completely in the red area, showing "service", fill the ELYSATOR with fresh water to check if the display is changing. This way it is possible to test the function of the anode without opening the ELYSATOR. If the indicator stays in the red area, the ELYSATOR should be opened to check or replace the anode.

1. Close inlet and outlet, empty the ELYSATOR through the drain cock.

2. Open the lid to the flange and unplug the electrical contacts softly

3. Open the flange and pull out the anode together with the flange. Check as follows:

a) The anode is all used up; only the steel core is left

= Replace anode

b) The anode is not used up but covered with a protection layer of oxides, stopping the anode from functioning

= The anode must be cleaned with a sharp tool

c) If the anode has more than one centimetre in diameter left

= The anode can be used for further time after cleaning

4. The isolation screw going through the flange has two special washers on both sides of the flange. Once opened, they cannot be reused. These washers are not part of the replacement kit. So do not open the isolation screw. When replacing the anode hold the isolation screw going through the flange and unscrew only the small inner screw at the end oft the steel core of the anode. After having mounted a new anode make sure, that all screws are tight and that the electrical wiring is properly reinstalled. If there is no indication on the meter, the ELYSATOR is not working.

If you have no indication after changing the anodes, check if: - The ELYSATOR has been refilled with water - The white isolation washers are both in place (no shortcut between anode and cathode) - The electrical wiring has been reinstalled properly - The instrument is not working (use an external mA-meter for testing)

Airvent If the de-aerator is leaking, close both the inlet and outlet valves. Open drain for release pressure. Dismantle the de-aerator and clean all parts. Reassemble, mount back and adjust for correct flow.

Reading the ELYSATOR Watermeter

The fraction counter on the left (x 0.0001) is one litre at a full turn It is also important to know, that the fraction counters and the full coun-ter are on the same clockwork, they cannot have different (indi-vidual) readings. It is possible that the daily total on the counter is not equivalent to the calculated total if the fl ow is not constantly the same. The instrument is very precise. It is sure that the total of the full counter does represent the exact amount of treated water in m3 (unless it is broken).

Flow meter. The running wheel is not running. Is the valves (inlet/outlet) opened? Close the inlet and outlet valves, open drain for to release pressure. Release the counter from the Elysator and clean the inlet filter. Reassemble and adjust for correct flow.

Galvanometer /indicator AnalogueThe instrument is not giving any reading on the scale Are the cables correctly mounted to the flange under the cover or cables broken? If cables are OK. The entire system might have been totally passivated. At start up the galvanic current might be up to 100mA, but while Elysator is increasing pH and scavenging oxygen the water gets less aggressive and the current wil decrease and stabilize. (normally from 4-15 mA). If some chlorides or sulphates should interfere resulting a higher conductivity or oxygen increasment (feed water), the ampere & output will increase again.

Property Average pH 8-10,5 Conductivity S/cm 50-800 ( normally below 400) Total hardness (boiler system) <10Chlorides (Cl) < 40 mg/l Sulphates (SO4) <100 mg/l Iron (Fe) mg/l < 1 mg/l Copper (Cu) mg/l < 1 mg/l

The current stands for the aggres-sivity of the water as well as for the oxygen molecules combined in the ELYSATOR.with an analog meter it is the only way to measure in full short cut. If you had a by-pass, you would measure less than the full produc-tion of electrons and interpretation would be diffi cult.We have digital indicators that measure with a shunt and have no resistance, but the analog indicator is most common and very reliable.• Low resistance of the meter gives

a better function of the electrode.• Our analog mA meters have an in-

ternal resistance of 1.5 ohm which is neglectable at the current range we are working in.

• The red switch does not brake the circuit, it only makes a short cut. This is for safety reasons. If the switch could brake the circuit, it could lead to a permanent brake not only of the instrument but of the whole function. The purpose of the switch is only to check if the the analog mA meter is mechani-cally o.k. (it could be blocked and lead to misinterpretation). Since the resistance of our mA-meters is so low, it can happen, that while pressing the button the indica-tor does not fall totally to zero (although the contacts ar gold plated, they resistance may grow with time). But knowing what the switch is for, this is no problem as long as the needle of the indicator moves a bit. All you need to know is that it is not blocked.
