A fi ery and passionate leader with a unique ability to motivate and inspire today’s stu-dent-athletes, Andy Coen is in his 12th year as Lehigh’s head football coach. During his time as the Moun-tain Hawks leader, Coen has produced

122 All-Patriot League honorees, 23 All-America selections and 219 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll student-ath-letes.

A two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, Coen has guided Lehigh to four Patriot League titles in 11 seasons in Bethlehem. He was a fi nalist for the Eddie Robinson Award on three occasions, fi nishing seventh in 2010, sixth in 2011 and 11th last year.

In 11 seasons, Coen has amassed an overall re-cord of 77-49 (.611) and a 47-19 (.712) mark against Patriot League foes. Late in the 2016 season, Coen passed the legendary John Whitehead and moved into second place on Lehigh’s career coaching wins list. He enters 2017 eight wins behind Bill Leckonby for the top spot.

Coen led the Mountain Hawks to their 11th Patriot League title in 2016. After an 0-2 start, Lehigh reeled off nine consecutive victories, capped by a 45-21 win over rival Lafayette to cap an un-defeated Patriot League season. Coen was named Patriot League Coach of the Year and was a fi nalist for the Eddie Robinson Award.

Thirteen players garnered All-Patriot League honors, led by quarterback Nick Shafnisky who was the league and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year. The Mountain Hawks boasted one of the top offensive attacks in the FCS with wide receivers Troy Pelletier and Gatlin Casey and running back Dominick Bragalone eclipsing the 1,000 yard mark in their respective areas. Pelletier went on to earn the fi rst All-America honors for a Lehigh football student-athlete since 2013.

Offensive lineman Micah Tennant and nose guard Jimmy Mitchell garnered Academic All-Patriot League honors, with Tennant becoming Coen’s second Academic All-American, and fi rst fi rst-team selection.

Lehigh fi nished 2015 with a 4-2 league mark. A 49-35 win over rival Lafayette, clinched a win-ning campaign at 6-5. A balanced offensive attack kept Lehigh in every game with quarterback Nick Shafnisky leading the Patriot League’s top-ranked offense. Freshman tailback Dominick Bragalone became the fi rst Lehigh freshman to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season and was named Patriot League and ECAC Rookie of the Year as well as being named a fi nalist for the FCS Freshman Player of the Year award.

Eight Mountain Hawks garnered All-Patriot League honors in 2015 with Pelletier and linebacker

Colton Caslow recognized for the second time. Academically, 22 student-athletes were

named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, with seniors Cody Kondas and Chris Ruhl earning Academic All-League recognition. Ruhl was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

Coen coached fi ve All-Patriot League per-formers in 2014 including three-time All-League offensive tackle Ned Daryoush and punter Austin Devine. Pelletier was a fi nalist for the Jerry Rice Award, given to the nation’s top freshman.

The Mountain Hawks posted their fourth consecutive winning season in 2013 with an 8-3 mark. Coen mentored nine All-Patriot League selections including wide receiver Lee Kurfi s, who led the FCS in receiving yards per game and earned All-America honors.

Under Coen’s guidance, Lehigh posted its third consecutive ten win season in 2012. Lehigh posted its fi fth straight win over Lafayette and fi nished in the top 20 of both national polls for the third straight season.

Coen coached 11 student-athletes to All-Patri-ot League honors, with a trio of seniors recognized as ECAC All-Stars. Seniors Zach Barket and Ryan Spadola were CoSIDA Academic All-District selec-tions, while Barket became Coen’s fi rst Academic All-American.

In 2011, Coen guided the Mountain Hawks to their best season in a decade, one that featured an 11-2 overall record, a 5-0 Patriot League record and Lehigh’s league-leading tenth football champion-ship. The Mountain Hawks won 10 straight games, including a 40-38 win at Towson in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Lehigh fi nished in the top six in both polls and captured its eighth Lambert Cup en route to being named ECAC FCS Team of the Year.

With quarterback Chris Lum leading the way, Lehigh ranked among the top fi ve nationally in passing offense and scoring offense. Lum fi nished second in the voting for the Walter Payton Award.

Five Mountain Hawks garnered All-America recognition, led by Lum and Spadola. Academical-ly, Spadola and Barket were Academic All-District selections.

The 2010 season saw Coen guide the Moun-tain Hawks to their ninth league championship and Lehigh’s fi rst outright league title since 2001. The Mountain Hawks won ten games for the fi rst time since 2001 and posted the fi rst undefeated Patriot League season in seven years.

Lehigh qualifi ed for the NCAA playoffs for the fi rst time since 2004 and went on the road to defeat Northern Iowa 14-7 for the Patriot League’s fi rst playoff win in seven years, while fi nishing the season ranked 14th nationally. For his team’s success, Coen was named Patriot League Coach of the Year.

Coen coached 10 All-Patriot League selections and six All-Amer-icans; marking the fi rst time since 2004 Lehigh produced an All-American.

Coen led the Mountain Hawks to a share of the Patriot League Championship in his fi rst-ever season as a head coach in 2006. The Mountain Hawks boasted a balanced attack on both sides of the ball, topping the Patriot League in scoring offense (27.2 ppg) and defense (20.2 ppg). The New Jersey native mentored 14 All-Patriot League selections.

Coen became the 28th head football coach in Lehigh history on January 3, 2006. That announce-ment marked his return to Lehigh, where he spent six seasons as an offensive line coach – including four as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Coen returned to Lehigh from Penn, where he spent six years as the offensive coordinator with the Quakers. In his six seasons in Philadelphia, the Quakers captured three Ivy League titles, includ-ing a top ten national fi nish in 2003.

In his fi rst stop at Lehigh (1994-99), Coen was a part of three Patriot League championship teams, including the 12-1 1998 squad. That team set a school mark for the most wins in a season, while reaching the NCAA Division I-AA quarterfi nals.

Coen produced ten All-Patriot League offensive linemen at Lehigh, while his teams twice fi nished in the national top ten in passing offense (1996, 1998). During Coen’s tenure as coordinator, Lehigh produced four consecutive 1,000-yard rush-ers, including Rabih Abdullah ’97, who remains Lehigh’s all-time leader in rushing yards (3,696). Recruiting Areas: Southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Georgia

Tim McGorry joined the Lehigh football coaching staff in March 2017. A veteran with more than a decade of experience coaching in the Lehigh Valley at both the college and high school levels, McGorry will coach Lehigh’s wide receivers.

McGorry comes to Lehigh after spending the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator at nearby Moravian College. He helped coach the team to its second best record in school history in 2015. ANDY MARINOOFFENSIVE LINE

Recruiting Areas: Central and Northern New Jersey, Central Florida (Orlando and Tampa areas)

Andy Marino begins his fourth season on the Mountain Hawks’ coaching staff. He was promoted to offensive line coach in the spring of 2015 after coaching the tight ends in 2014.

Three of Marino’s starting linemen garnered all-league recognition with senior left guard Matt Ford garnering fi rst team honors and tackles Zach Duffy and Tim O’Hara earning second team laurels. Lehigh’s fi ve starting linemen accounted for 54 of a possible 55 starts together and paved the way for Dominick Bragalone to become the fi rst Lehigh fresh-man to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.

Marino came to Lehigh from Widener University where he spent the 2013 season working with the offensive line. He also held titles of As-sistant Head Coach, Recruiting Coordinator and Run Game Coordinator. He mentored one All-Conference lineman while his offensive line paved the way for the conference’s top scoring offense.

Prior to his stint at Widener, Marino spent three years on the coaching staff at Delaware where he spent two seasons as an offensive graduate assistant before working with the tight ends and tackles in 2012. He also coordinated and directed the punt team. In his fi rst season at Delaware, the Blue Hens reached the FCS National Championship game. Marino also worked with Blue Hen center Gino Gradkowski, who now plays for the Carolina Panthers.

Marino has familiarity with the Lehigh Valley as he spent one season as the offensive line coach at Whitehall High School, where he led the team to 7-5 record and the Eastern Conference championship.

A 2009 graduate of Lycoming College with a degree in History, Marino was a three-year starter and a two-year team captain on the offensive line. In 2008 he was a MAC Champion in the NCAA Division III National Playoff Qualifi er. He added a Master’s in Higher Education Administration from Delaware in 2012.

TYLER WARDLINEBACKERS

Recruiting Areas: Ark., Canada, Ill., Iowa, Kan., Minn., Mo., Neb., N.D., S.D., Southern Va, Wis.

Former team captain and All-Patriot League performer Tyler Ward ’14 enters his second season on the coaching staff at his Alma Mater. Ward joined the Lehigh coaching staff in the spring of 2016 and will work with Lehigh’s linebackers in 2017. Last season, Ward coached the Mountain Hawks’ rover position.

In his fi rst season on Lehigh’s staff, Ward oversaw the development of Kareem Montgomery and the re-emergence of LaQuan Lambert, who, after recovering from a serious injury in 2015, stepped in for an injured Montgomery and excelled over Lehigh’s fi nal seven games at the rover position.

A three-year letter winner at safety and a member of Lehigh’s 2010 and 2011 Patriot League Championship teams, Ward was named a team captain prior to his senior season and went on to earn fi rst team All-Patriot League honors after leading the Mountain Hawks with 98 tackles. Ward also led Lehigh with two interceptions as the Mountain Hawks fi nished 8-3. In Ward’s four years, the Mountain Hawks posted a 39-9 overall record. Ward appeared in 35 career games for the Mountain Hawks, fi nishing with 165 total tackles.

Ward spent the last two seasons on the coaching staff at Franklin & Marshall College. He worked with the wide receivers in 2014 before moving back to the defensive side of the ball and coaching linebackers last year. In his fi rst season at F&M, Ward coached three-time All-Cen-tennial Conference receiver Jordan Zackery who set school records for receptions and all-purpose yards. Last season, Ward mentored Luke Foukas who was the Diplomats’ second leading tackler and led F&M with 8.5 tackles for loss.

A Charlottesville, Virginia native, Ward graduated from Lehigh in 2014 with a degree in political science.

A.J. REISIGROVERS/RECRUITING COORDINATOR

Recruiting Areas: Ala., North Fla., La., Southeastern Md., Miss., N.Y., Okla., Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth Area), Northern Va.

A.J. Reisig enters his second season on the Lehigh coaching staff. Reisig, a 2009 graduate of Dickinson College, joined the Lehigh coaching staff in July 2016. He spent the previous three seasons as a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland. After serving as assistant sec-ondary coach in his fi rst season, Reisig will take over Lehigh’s rovers in 2017, while also serving as the football program’s recruiting coordinator.

In his fi rst season at Lehigh, Reisig worked with the Mountain Hawks’ cornerbacks. Lehigh ranked third in the Patriot League in passing defense with Brandon Leaks earning second team all-league recognition and Quentin Jones and Donavon Harris both contributing when in the lineup.

Reisig came to Maryland in 2013 as a graduate assistant under head coach Randy Edsall, working with defensive backs and special teams. He assisted a defense that ranked in the top third of the Football Bowl Subdivision in both total defense and pass defense in 2013 and pass effi ciency defense in 2014. Maryland made bowl appearances in each of Reisig’s fi rst two seasons in College Park, participating in the Military Bowl in 2013 and the Foster Farms Bowl in 2014.

Midway through the 2015 season, Reisig took over the Terrapins’ outside linebackers, and guided that unit through Maryland’s fi nal six games. Maryland’s defense ranked 23rd in tackles-for-loss and 14th in sacks among FBS teams in 2015. Reisig also worked with Maryland’s kickoff coverage units and a punt return unit that led the Big Ten and ranked fi fth nationally.

Prior to his stint at Maryland, Reisig spent two seasons at Shippens-burg University as a graduate assistant working with the secondary. At Shippensburg, Reisig helped improve a defense that ranked 113th in pass effi ciency before he arrived, into one that ranked 13th in Division II in 2011 and 42nd in 2012. He placed an emphasis on his defensive backs creating turnovers with Shippensburg ranking in the top ten nation-ally in takeaways in both of his seasons. Shippensburg won the PSAC Eastern Division with a 10-0 record in 2012 and advanced to the second round of the Division II playoffs.

Reisig was a two-year starter at cornerback at Dickinson, recording fi ve interceptions, 101 tackles, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick in four seasons from 2005-2008. He also served as an undergraduate assistant to the head coach, assisting with game fi lm and recruiting while working with the defensive backs in the spring segment.

Reisig earned his B.A. in Psychology from Dickinson in 2009 before moving on to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., where he spent two seasons coaching the secondary. He added a Master’s degree in Organizational Development and Leadership from Shippensburg in December 2012 and added a second Master’s degree in Information Management from Maryland in 2016.

JOHN SIBELRUNNING BACKS

Recruiting Areas: Southwestern Fla., Ind., Ky., Southern Ohio, N.C., S.C., Tenn., Texas (all but Dallas-Ft. Worth), W. Va.

John Sibel enters his fi rst season on the Mountain Hawks’ coaching staff. He will work with Lehigh’s running backs. He comes from Susque-hanna University, where he was the team’s wide receivers coach and assistant special teams coordinator.

“(Sibel) is going to be a very good fi t for our football team,” Coen said. “He most recently coached at Susquehanna University, and that’s becoming another strong team from the Centennial Conference. But what I liked with John was how detailed he was in his interview. He is going to be able to connect very well with our running backs. We’re handing (Sibel) a really talented group of guys, and I expect (Sibel) to be able to develop our running backs.”

At Susquehanna, Sibel mentored the Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year as well as a pair of receivers who received All-Conference honors. Sibel was also responsible for coordinating Susquehanna’s kick-off return and punt return units.

Before Susquehanna, Sibel was a wide receiver at Lycoming College from 2011-15. He was a three-time All-MAC Academic Team member and on the fi eld ranked second on the team in receptions and receiving yards in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Sibel earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Lycoming in 2015.

NATE PRZESTRZELSKISPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR/SPECIALISTS

Recruiting Areas: Alaska, Ariz. Calif., Colo., Conn., Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Mass., Mont., Nev., N.H., N.M., Ore., R.I., Utah, Vt., Wash.

Nate Przestrzelski joined the Lehigh football coaching staff in March 2017 as specialists coach and special teams coordinator. Like his predecessor, Ryan Dougherty, Przestrzelski was a punter at East Caroli-na University.

Przestrzelski most recently served as the special teams coordinator for Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C. Prior to Chowan, Przestr-zelski spent two seasons as a special teams and defensive administrative assistant at Utah State, where he worked with former Lehigh assistant Dave Ungerer. In his time at Utah State, the Aggies led the Mountain West in Net Kickoff Coverage in both 2013 and 2014. Przestrzelski also coached Nick Diaz to second team All-Mountain West honors as a placekicker.

“(Przestrzelski)’s ability will be working really close with all of our specialists, and I think he’s really somebody who can help the young guys that we have in the specialists group and obviously help continue to make Eddie Mish a very good specialist for us,” Coen said. “A big part of Nate’s job here will be to help develop the younger skill players that we have that we need to develop, and Nate will also have the title of special teams coordinator.”

Przestrzelski, who graduated from East Carolina in 2009 and obtained a master’s in sports administration from St. Thomas University. He was a member of two Conference USA Championship teams at ECU and the Pirates appeared in four bowl games when he was there.

2017 SPRING OUTLOOK

2017 LEHIGH FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS • PAGE EIGHT

The Lehigh football program returned to the top of the mountain in 2016. The Mountain Hawks overcame an 0-2 start to win nine straight games, capturing their Patriot League-best 11th league title and fi rst since 2011. Follow-ing a second-straight win over rival Lafayette, Lehigh re-turned to the FCS playoffs for the fi rst time in fi ve seasons. The Mountain Hawks fi nished the season ranked in the top 25 of both major FCS polls and captured ECAC Team of the Year honors.

The turnover to a new season always brings change. In Lehigh’s case, most of a senior class that helped turn the program from 3-8 in 2014 to Patriot League champions two years later will be gone. Two assistant coaches who have spent several years with the program have been ele-vated into coordinator positions.

On the other end, there is plenty of experience and tal-ent returning. Eight of Lehigh’s 10 All-Patriot League selections return, plus three of four ECAC All-Stars and All-America wide receiver and Walter Payton Award fi nalist Troy Pelletier. The returning core will also be bolstered with the addition of three student-athletes who have been granted a fi fth-year of eligibility: nose guard Jimmy Mitchell and offensive linemen and team captains Zach Duffy and Brandon Short.

Lehigh’s offense is once again expected to be powerful, with eight starters returning including three all-league skill players and 80 percent of the offensive line. Brad Mayes is expected to take over at quarterback and has performed well over his fi rst two seasons with signifi cant playing experience.

Defensively, the Mountain Hawks improved from 2015 to 2016 and will look to continue to improve, especially in terms of stopping the run. Lehigh will make some tweaks to its system, relying heavily on a deep and talented defen-sive line and a secondary that was an area of strength last year despite its relative youth.

With higher numbers this spring than in previous years, Lehigh is looking forward to a spring segment with an em-phasis on improvement through competition. The Moun-tain Hawks hope the competitive environment will have Lehigh ready to make a run at another Patriot League title in the fall.

OFFENSELehigh’s 2016 offense ranked among the best in the FCS as the Mountain Hawks fi nished in the top 10 nationally in passing offense, total offense and scoring offense. The Mountain Hawks also set school records for total points (466) and total offense (5,806) in 2016. Former wide receiv-ers coach Scott Brisson takes over as offensive coordinator and will coach the quarterbacks, but the expectation is that the Mountain Hawks’ offense should remain potent. Lehigh loses Patriot League and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year Nick Shafnisky but has experienced junior Brad Mayes waiting to take the reins. At Mayes’ disposal will be a trio of All-Patriot League skill players in 1,000-yard rush-er Dom Bragalone and 1,000-yard receivers Troy Pelletier and Gatlin Casey. In addition, Lehigh returns a veteran offensive line that includes four returning starters, three all-league performers and two fi fth-year seniors.

QuarterbacksThe development of Nick Shafnisky as a three-year starter resulted in a Patriot League title for the Mountain Hawks and a Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year award for Shafnisky. When Shafnisky was out or limited due to injury, Brad Mayes came in and more than held his own. Mayes started three games and played a majority of a fourth, completing nearly 68 percent of his passes for 1,386

yards with 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Mayes’ fi rst start of the season at Yale turned out to be one for the record books, as he threw for a school record 524 yards and six touchdowns in a 63-35 victory.

There will be competition for the backup quarterback spot behind Mayes. Senior Matt Timochenko has the most experience, appearing in six games over his fi rst three sea-sons and completing all fi ve of his passes in 2016. Senior Brendan Craven returns after being sidelined through all of last season, while sophomore Tyler Monaco will also battle for time.

ReceiversLehigh boasts one of the top receiver duos in the FCS as seniors Troy Pelletier and Gatlin Casey both eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards and fi nished in the top 12 nationally in receiving. The question marks come in the slot where the Mountain Hawks must replace dependable veterans Derek Knott and Trevor Socarras.

Pelletier continued to improve in his third season, fi nish-ing with 96 catches for 1,278 yards and 12 touchdowns on the way to earning third team All-America honors. If healthy, he will make a run at Lehigh’s career records for receptions and receiving yards.

Casey emerged as a force opposite Pelletier and was rewarded with fi rst team all-league accolades. He caught 62 passes for 1,135 yards, averaging a team-best 18.3 yards per reception, and also led the Mountain Hawks with 14 touchdown receptions.

Lehigh will look to senior Sasha Kelsey to return to form. Kelsey contributed as a sophomore and after a strong per-formance in the 2016 season opener was lost for the season due to injury. Among the junior class, Luke Christiano could get the fi rst opportunity in the slot, while Conner Bi-anchini continues to improve and could provide depth out wide. Also in the wide receiver mix are juniors Matthew Gargano, Dylan Parsons and Cam Richardson and sopho-mores Dylan Connolly and Greg Gamble. Sophomore Dev-on Bibbens was originally recruited as a wide receiver and moves back to offense after spending his freshman season working in the secondary.

Running BacksWhile not deep in terms of numbers, this group, which will consist of four in the spring, features players who have made major contributions as younger players and should continue to improve as they mature.

The leader of the group is junior Dominick Bragalone, who with 1,171 yards last season joined Rabih Abdullah ’97 as the only Mountain Hawks to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a season twice in their careers. Bragalone had four 100-yard receiving games a season ago and rushed for 14 touchdowns on the way to earning fi rst team All-Patriot League honors for the second straight season.

Bragalone’s classmate Micco Brisker appeared in nine games to form a 1-2 punch with Bragalone. Brisker ranked second among Lehigh running backs with 209 yards and contributed four touchdowns.

Former walk-on Naha Amankwah-Ayeh continued to be a hard-nosed, powerful and reliable runner. Amank-wah-Ayeh contributed 194 yards, averaging 4.4 per carry. He capped his junior campaign with an impressive performance against Lafayette in which he rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown.

The fourth member of the running back group is senior Marc Raye-Redmond, who spent three years in the sec-ondary and essentially switched spots with junior Nick Thevanayagam, who moves to safety.

Tight EndsLehigh returns fi ve of its six tight ends from a season ago, losing just blocking specialist Zach Bucklin. Incorporating the tight end position into the passing game will be a goal for the Mountain Hawks in the spring and heading into the fall. Senior Drew Paulsen is the returning starter. He caught 13 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown.

Paulsen is the only Lehigh tight end that owns a career reception. Senior Michael Baur has improved steadily during his time in the Brown and White and could be in line for a larger role this season.

Also in the tight end mix are juniors Dan Scassera and Jimmy Schulz, the latter of whom moves back to offense after working as a defensive lineman last season, and sophomore Stephen Puhl.

Offensive LineA veteran offensive line served as the foundation for much of Lehigh’s offensive success last season and with four starters returning, including a pair of fi fth-year seniors who served as captains in 2016, the offensive line should once again be an area of strength. The Mountain Hawks’ fi ve starters made 59 of a possible 60 starts to-gether last season.

Fifth-year seniors Zach Duffy and Brandon Short are the returning captains who will serve as a veteran presence on the offensive line and will continue to provide strong leadership for the entire team. Duffy, a three-year starter at right tackle, is a two-time all-league performer who earned fi rst team honors last season. Short is a three-year starter at center and is coming off a season in which he was named second team All-Patriot League.

At left tackle, Lehigh returns a two-year starter in senior Tim O’Hara, who has earned second-team all-league lau-rels in each of the last two seasons.

The other returning starter is junior Liborio Ricottilli, who started all 12 games at right guard in his sophomore campaign. There will be competition to replace Academic All-America Micah Tennant at left guard as well as devel-oping depth in the interior line. The coaching staff is hope-ful that junior Eric Hawkinson can step in and contribute after missing all of 2016 due to injury. Hawkinson could fi gure in at guard or as a backup at center. Also compet-ing on the interior will be junior Tim Wagner, who has equipped himself well as the backup center, junior Thomas Zuewsky and sophomores Derek Lomax, Ryan Oneidas and Nick Rosen.

At the tackle spots, Lehigh returns junior Aidan O’Carroll and sophomore Alex Motley, while sophomore Taylor Curlin will miss the spring segment due to injury.

DEFENSEAn improved defense was one of the keys to Lehigh’s nine-game winning streak and Patriot League title run. A number of young players emerged in the secondary turn-ing a question mark into an area of strength. An oppor-tunistic unit created 21 takeaways including 17 intercep-tions after the Mountain Hawks created just 13 turnovers in each of the previous two seasons. Secondary coach Craig Sutyak takes over as defensive coordinator while Joe Bottiglieri will take over as a senior advisor for the de-fense. The Mountain Hawks will play to their strengths, a veteran defensive line and a talented secondary, and will make some tweaks to their previous system. Lehigh also must sure up a run defense that allowed more than 200 yards per game on average, if it hopes to make another postseason run.

Defensive LineWith no losses to graduation and the entire rotation returning, the defensive line should fi gure to be one of Lehigh’s deepest units. The Mountain Hawks upped their sack total to 27, led by senior Tyler Cavenas, who had fi ve and led all Lehigh defensive linemen with 55 tackles. Jimmy Mitchell returns for a fi fth year of eligibility and should anchor the nose guard position. Lehigh returns solid depth on the interior with junior Julian Lynn, sopho-more Ryan Nace (who appeared in all 12 games as a freshman) and senior Justin Gille all returning as contrib-utors.

At the defensive end spot, senior Harrison Johnson returns after registering three sacks a season ago. Junior Harrison Kauffman also contributed last season and could be in line for a larger role. Also vying for time will be junior Juwan Morrow and sophomores Matt Prender-gast and Davis Maxie. Sophomore Jake Weir contributed as a linebacker on special teams as a freshman and has moved to the defensive line where Lehigh hopes to use his quickness and athleticism as a pass rusher.

LinebackerAn area of strength last season will be one of Lehigh’s biggest question marks heading into 2017. The Mountain Hawks’ top three tacklers were a trio of senior lineback-ers who provided both leadership and production in

Lehigh’s championship campaign. Colton Caslow, Evan Harvey and Pierce Ripanti combined for 214 tackles, 21 tackles-for-loss, fi ve sacks and fi ve interceptions.

A number of younger players will be in the mix for play-ing time at the linebacker position. Junior Mark Walker replaced an injured Caslow in Lehigh’s playoff loss at New Hampshire and will get one of the fi rst opportuni-ties, along with junior Matt Butler who has bulked up after working as a rover at times last season. Four other juniors are in the mix at linebacker, with Jake Buskirk owning the most experience of that class with 22 tack-les over two seasons. Jake Scott will also battle for time as will Brian Olshanski who looks to bounce back from injury. Max Frankel moves to linebacker after working as a fullback in his fi rst two seasons.

Lehigh also has a pair of talented sophomores, who could fi gure in at linebacker or at the rover position in Jon Seighman and Keith Woetzel. Senior Hobson McCain will also compete for time at linebacker.

RoverWhile injuries decimated a new rover position in 2015, the position was an area of strength in Lehigh’s defense last season. Once he returned to full strength after missing the previous season due to injury, LaQuan Lambert’s physi-cality and sure tackling helped elevate Lehigh’s defensive performance. Junior Kareem Montgomery played well at times but will move back to his more natural position of cornerback. In the spring, junior Mike Gies moves from safety and may get the fi rst crack at the rover position. Also in the mix is sophomore Alex Duke who was last season’s defensive scout team MVP.

SecondaryDespite a number of underclassmen manning key roles, Lehigh’s secondary emerged as an area of strength. The Mountain Hawks allowed just 212.2 passing yards per game and the secondary accounted for 10 of Lehigh’s 17 interceptions. Lehigh loses second team all-league per-former Brandon Leaks to graduation but has a number of young, talented players waiting in the wings.

Quentin Jones was regarded as one of the most talent-ed players on defense for the Mountain Hawks. Jones returned to cornerback last season but after starting Lehigh’s fi rst fi ve games was lost for the season after suffering a serious head injury at Yale. Jones has been cleared to return to action and fi gures to hold down one of the corner spots.

In Jones’ absence, junior Donavon Harris emerged as a capable performer opposite Leaks. Harris made 37 tack-les and recorded a key interception in Lehigh’s Patriot League championship-clinching win over Bucknell.

With junior Kareem Montgomery returning to corner-back and promising sophomore Marquis Wilson, Lehigh should have enough talent and depth at cornerback.

Starting together as a sophomore and freshman, respec-tively, Sam McCloskey and Riley O’Neil formed a for-midable tandem at safety. McCloskey made 54 tackles and tied for the team lead with three interceptions, while O’Neil was the only Lehigh freshman to start and started all 12 games, making 44 tackles with two interceptions.

Behind McCloskey and O’Neil are juniors Devan Polanis and Nick Thevanayagam, the latter of whom moves over to defense after working as a running back in his fi rst two seasons.

Lehigh’s incoming freshman class also includes four stu-dent-athletes who will vie for time in the secondary upon their arrival this summer.

SPECIAL TEAMSLehigh’s special teams units were solid in 2016 and the Mountain Hawks will enter the new season with a new specialists coach and special teams coordinator in Nate Przestrzelski.

Ed Mish was outstanding as a sophomore, handling all of the kicking and punting duties and earning fi rst team All-Patriot League honors for both positions. Mish set a school record with 62 extra points last season and was a perfect 62-for-62 on PATs, including a school-record nine at Yale. He also had 27 touchbacks on 81 kickoffs and averaged 43 yards on 42 punts.

The Mountain Hawks hope to use the spring to aid the development of their two rising sophomore specialists, Oliver Clowes and Austin Henning.

Lehigh returns a number of capable athletes in the return game. Senior Gatlin Casey was outstanding in his fi rst season returning kickoffs, and was named fi rst team all-league as a return specialist. He and senior Marc Raye-Redmond return as the primary kickoff returners, with several others with kickoff returning experience, including senior Sasha Kelsey and junior Donavon Harris, who have returned kickoffs in previous seasons.

Seniors Troy Pelletier and Quentin Jones and junior Luke Christiano have all handled punt return duties in previ-ous seasons.

Lehigh returns several players with snapping ability, no-tably junior Mark Walker, who handled punts and junior Harrison Kauffman, who handled placements. The Moun-tain Hawks are bringing in a long snapping specialist in Jack Dean as part of their incoming freshman class.

LEHIGH ANNOUNCES 2017 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Feb. 17, 2017) – Six home games, including the 153rd meeting of college football’s most-played rivalry highlight the 2017 Lehigh football schedule. The Patriot League champion Mountain Hawks will welcome a perennial CAA power plus the two-time defending Ivy League champions as part of the Goodman Stadium slate. “It is important to challenge our program every year,” explained Coen, the 2016 Patriot League Coach of the Year, who enters his 12th season. “We always want to play the best teams from the CAA and the top end of the Ivy League.” The 134th season of Lehigh football will begin at Goodman Stadium when the Mountain Hawks host Villanova on Saturday, Sept. 2. In the fi rst of three September home dates for the Mountain Hawks, Lehigh welcomes a Villanova team that went 9-4 a season ago and reached the second round of the FCS playoffs. The game will be the fi rst as head coach for Villanova’s Mark Ferrante, who replaces longtime coach Andy Talley, who retired at the end of last season. “Coming off of our 11th Patriot League championship, it will be exciting to welcome what should be a nationally-ranked Villanova program for our home opener,” Coen said. “It will be an early opportunity to test ourselves against a strong CAA program.” Lehigh’s fi rst road game of 2017 will see the Mountain Hawks head to West Long Branch, N.J. to face Monmouth on Sept. 9, in the Hawks’ second game at what will be a newly-renovated Monmouth Stadium. The Mountain Hawks will visit Monmouth for the fi rst time since 2013 and will be looking to snap a two-game slide against the Hawks, after dropping last year’s opener 23-21. The Mountain Hawks will return to Goodman Stadium for back-to-back games against Ivy League opponents on Sept. 16 and 23. Le-high will entertain Yale on Sept. 16 and the following Saturday will host a Penn team that has shared the last two Ivy League titles. One of the highlights of Lehigh’s 2016 campaign was a 3-0 mark against Ivy League foes, including wins over both co-champions Penn and Princeton. “Our team will be excited to get another shot at Monmouth after losing our opener to them last year,” Coen explained. “We then come home to face two strong Ivy programs that we beat last year. Both Penn and Yale will surely be looking to avenge those loss-es.” The month of September and Lehigh’s non-league schedule will conclude with Lehigh’s fi rst-ever meeting with Wagner, set for Sept. 30 in Staten Island, N.Y. “Wagner has a very strong football tradition and has won several NEC championships in recent years,” Coen said. The Seahawks went 6-5 last season and were 4-2 in the Northeast Conference. Wagner won the NEC and reached the second round of the FCS playoffs in 2012 also shared the NEC title in 2014. Patriot League play begins Oct. 7 when the Mountain Hawks visit Colgate. Last year’s game, won 45-31 by the Mountain Hawks at Goodman Stadium marked the earliest Lehigh-Colgate game in 19 years. This Oct. 7 clash in Hamilton, N.Y. will mark just the third time that Lehigh will open league play against Colgate. The Mountain Hawks will then return to Goodman Stadium to host Georgetown on Oct. 14, a game that will be followed by Le-high’s bye week. Following the Oct. 21 bye, Lehigh will take to the road for key Patriot League games at Fordham (Oct. 28) and Bucknell (Nov. 4). The regular season will conclude with back-to-back home games. Lehigh will host Holy Cross on Nov. 11 before welcoming rival La-fayette for the 153rd edition of The Rivalry on Nov. 18. The Mountain Hawks have won the last two meetings against the Leopards, including a 45-21 triumph in Easton last season, and seven of the last nine games in the series. “We will close the regular season with two huge home games,” Coen said. “Holy Cross had some tough luck with injuries last year but I expect them to bounce back. The Lehigh-Lafayette game is obviously a very big game for a number of reasons.” Lehigh is coming off a 9-3 season that includes the program’s 11th Patriot League championship and fi rst playoff appearance since 2011.
