Q Do you have any information on the group Spike Jones and His City Slickers?—Philip Rappenecker, Sperry, Iowa

Jones and his madcap band created musical mayhem throughout the 1940s and 1950s as they satirized pop songs, classical pieces and ballads using silly vocals and noisy cowbells, foghorns, pistols and made-up instruments. Jones had a huge radio hit in 1942 as he literally gave Adolph Hitler the raspberry in “Der Fuehrer’s Face.” And he hit No. 1 on the pop charts in 1948 with “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.” The zany bandleader died in 1965 at age 53.

Q Jon Hamm, who plays Don Draper in

Mad Men, is the most dignified and handsome

actor in TV or movies. Tell us more about him.—Ana Maria Gonzalez, American Fork, Utah

The St. Louis native, 39, earned a degree in English from the University of Missouri and was a schoolteacher before he turned to acting. In addition to Mad Men, he appeared on TV in Providence, The Division, The Unit and 30 Rock, and his film credits include The Town, Space Cowboys, We Were Soldiers and the upcoming Sucker Punch. In comparing his TV character’s retro life to present day, Hamm says, “The one thing I think the ’60s had over present day is the pace. Life moved a lot slower. It wasn’t a constant chase.”

Q I really enjoyed watching Will Estes on American Dreams. Now he plays a cop on the TV series Blue Bloods. Did he have to train for the role?—Juanita Rosas, Taos, N.M.

Estes, 32, also portrays a policeman in the film Magic Valley, which will debut soon on the film festival circuit. For his role as one of New York’s finest in Blue Bloods, he says, “It was about soaking up the culture and mentality of the NYPD. We have a wonderful technical adviser on the show who was on the job 24 years and was a detective first grade. I go to him for everything.”

Soon, a pair of wannabe astronauts joins him on stage where—lying on their backs with their knees in the air—they are buckled into genuine space shuttle seats brought to Baton Rouge to simulate an extraterrestrial journey.

“Five, four, three, two, one, liftoff!” says Harris, 54, leading the teens in a spirited countdown. Suddenly, an onstage screen shows the image of a massive space shuttle rumbling toward blastoff—complete with simulated smoke swirling through the air and the thunderous sounds of rocket engines igniting. One student passenger yelps amid the excitement.

“That gives you an idea of what it’s like to leave Earth,” Harris says with a chuckle.

Harris speaks from experience. A member of NASA’s 13th class of astronauts, the physician, scientist and businessman is a veteran of two space shuttle flights, during which he logged more than 438 hours and 7.2 million miles. On Feb. 9, 1995, he became the world’s first African-American to walk in space, dangling 250 miles above the Earth from a robotic arm attached to the orbiter Discovery.

“When you’re up there, you get to see the sun rise and set every 45 minutes,” he tells the students. “It’s pretty awesome. And remember, I got there because of my education.”

Seeds of inspirationCalling himself a “dreamer who

believes nothing is impossible,” Harris was born into poverty in Temple, Texas (pop. 54,514), and grew up with two siblings in a household headed by his mother in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Living today in Houston, Texas, he takes his Dream Tour across America to encourage teens living in the kinds of inner-city neighborhoods where he started out.

His message: Dream big, work hard and cherish your mentors.

“Believe in those who believe in you,” says Harris, pointing to the teachers standing along the auditorium aisles in Baton Rouge. “Take advantage of the teachers and principals and parents who are responsible for your being here.”

For Harris, his first mentors were the devoted, nurturing women in his family.

His great-grandmother, Lizzie “Honey” Emanuel, was the granddaughter of slaves and a pillar of Oakwood, Texas, where she managed her farm after her husband

Page 8: Elevator operator gives courthouse visitors a liftmatchbin-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/public/sites/975/... · 1940s and 1950s as they satirized pop songs, classical pieces and ballads

died. “I saw at an early age what hard work could do,” Harris says. “And even though my great-grandmother didn’t have much schooling, she considered education very important. Nearly everyone in the following generations had a college degree.”

His mother, Gussie Emanuel Harris, earned her bachelor’s degree in home economics and worked as a cook in a restaurant in Waco, Texas, until landing a teaching job on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona and New Mexico.

“I was in an entirely different culture with people of different backgrounds, and we all had to learn to play together,” recalls Harris, who lived near the reservation for eight years. “I learned from the Navajo to love the Earth and nature and realized that we are all part of a larger universe.”

A vision for successFamily and teachers encouraged

Harris’ natural interest in science, and at age 13, his ultimate dream crystallized while watching history on his family’s black-and-white television set in Tohatchi, N.M. (pop. 1, 037). “In 1969, I saw Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon,” he says. “I

decided that I wanted to be an astronaut myself, and that I wasn’t going to let anything get in my way.”

Nothing did.Inspired to pursue medicine by Dr.

Frank Bryant, his family doctor in San Antonio, Texas, Harris loaded up on math and science classes during high school. His circle of heroes expanded from Armstrong and Aldrin to include Dr. Joseph Kerwin, the first American physician to travel in space. “They were role models from afar,” Harris says. “They didn’t know me, but I knew everything about them.”

After studying biology at the University of Houston, he graduated from Texas Tech’s School of Medicine in 1982 and completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where another mentor, Dr. Joseph Combs, suggested that he specialize in an aspect of medicine in which NASA needed expertise. Winning a National Research Council Fellowship, he studied osteoporosis, a potential problem for space travelers.

In 1990, Harris was among 23 people chosen from 6,000 applicants for NASA’s elite astronaut training program. During his first flight in 1993 aboard the space shuttle Columbia, Harris was a mission specialist and studied the impact of zero gravity on the human body. Two years later, he was a payload commander of the Discovery flight, during which he and British astronaut Michael Foale took their historic five-hour stroll in outer space.

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans.

CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether.

Over 200,000 families, located throughout the U.S. have regained financial independence with CreditGUARD’s licensed, bonded and insured service. CreditGUARD of America has received high marks in consumer surveys showing high consumer satisfaction and confidence. The CreditGUARD debt management program can actually turn a person’s life around.

One such case is Sandra L. who proclaimed “CreditGUARD cut my monthly payment by $656 and saved me over $29,206.53 in interest. They saved my way of life and gave me back my piece of mind! Now I can see myself on my way to becoming debt free.” or Jeffery C. who said “CreditGUARD of America helped me consolidate 3 of my credit cards into one affordable payment. Giving backReady for a new challenge,

Harris left NASA in 1996 to explore the world of entrepreneurship. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston and started Vesalius Ventures, a firm that invests in health care technologies and companies.

In 1998, he established the Harris Foundation “as a means to give back” by supporting math and science education initiatives and crime prevention programs for America’s youth. The seeds for the foundation were planted three years earlier while he worked at NASA and spoke to students on juvenile probation in Houston. He was struck by how many seemed without purpose, adrift in hopelessness.

Launching his Dream Tour in 2008 at a San Antonio middle school

named after him, he since has spoken to thousands of students in more than 30 cities, and with the support of ExxonMobil conducts summer science camps at 30 college campuses across America where mostly inner-city students study math, science and technology.

“We shoot off rockets, make solar cars, dissect sheep eyes, and write computer programs to operate robots. The kids love it,” says Wayne Trail, a physics professor who directs the summer science camp at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

Harris is an inspiration for the campers, says Trail, who adds: “Science and math are often perceived as too difficult, but when he stands there and talks about it, these kids can’t help but think they can excel in these areas, too.”

Harris says many youngsters don’t have voices of encouragement in their lives.

“I’m here to remind you that geeks—the people with knowledge and education—rule the world,” Harris tells the Baton Rouge students. “If someone teases you about being smart, look them in the eye and say, ‘Someday, you’re going to be working for me.’”

Listening in the auditorium is eighth-grader Tanayri Rodriguez,

who afterward says her encounter with Harris has her rethinking her career plan to work in a hair salon.

“Maybe a marine biologist!” she says. “I’d like to go down to the bottom of the ocean and see if I can find something new there.” ★

AFTER ALL THE excitement and festivity of November and December, the first cold weeks of the new year can seem dull by comparison. But look closer at January and you’ll find plenty to celebrate—and a lot to ponder!

• Historical figures Betsy Ross, Paul Revere, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock and Franklin D. Roosevelt were born in January. So were movie stars Mel Gibson, Robert Duvall, Nicolas Cage,

Orlando Bloom, Kevin Costner, Paul Newman, Gene Hackman and Tom Selleck, and singers Elvis Presley, David Bowie, Pat Benatar, Rod Stewart, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond.

• January got its name from Janus, the Roman god “of the doorway,” many times represented as a two-faced mask signifying both beginnings and endings.

• Remember this the next time you sip a milk shake: Paraffin-coated drinking straws were patented in January 1888.

• Would you like fries with that, comrade? McDonald’s opened its first restaurant in the Soviet Union in January 1990.

• Fore! In January 1916, probably because it was too chilly to go outside and play, golfers in New York established the Professional Golfers Association.

• Wedding bells: Billionaire Bill Gates tied the knot in Hawaii in January 1994, reserving every room in his hotel to ensure privacy.

• Wheel of Fortune began its long-running spin on TV, with host Chuck Woolery at the helm, in January 1975. ★

Geraldine Bunn chats with Judge Joseph Schoeberl in the elevator of the Jasper County (Mo.) Courthouse.

WHEN A BUZZER SOUNDS and a green light illuminates on the brass call box of the 1916 elevator at the Jasper County Courthouse in Carthage, Mo. (pop. 12,668), operator Geraldine Bunn knows it’s time to give someone on the third floor a ride.

“I’ll be right back,” Bunn, 82, tells a group of people she’s been chatting with on the first floor.

As she’s done thousands of times, Bunn slides the elevator’s metal gate shut, then grasps a porcelain-knobbed lever and eases it to the right. The 1,000-pound capacity cage climbs slowly past a floor painted with a number “2.” Bunn glides the elevator to a stop, aligning it with the third floor of the courthouse.

“Sometimes I hit it on the spot and sometimes I don’t,” she says, adding that if the floors don’t align, she maneuvers the elevator until the floors are flush so riders don’t trip or stumble when entering or exiting the cage.

For 14 years, Bunn’s workday has been filled with the ups and downs of shuttling 200 or more

passengers between the basement, first, second and third floors of the elegant 1894 limestone courthouse.

“People always ask me, ‘Don’t you get dizzy?’” says Bunn, who lives in nearby Jasper (pop. 1,011). “No,” she assures them. She loves her

mobile office.Originally, the courthouse had only stairs.

Then in 1916 holes were bored through the building’s concrete floors, and the open-cage wrought-iron elevator was installed on steel cables and massive oak beams.

“In and of itself, the elevator is a tourist attraction,” says Judge Joseph Schoeberl, as he descends from his third-floor office and courtroom.

When Schoeberl steps out of the elevator, he pretends to trip over a slight gap between the floors, making Bunn laugh. “He’s always doing that to me,” she says.

Bunn provides a lift in every sense of the word. “She’s very cheery and brightens the day,” says Schoeberl, 62. “She’s like a cup of coffee in the morning.”

Working as an elevator attendant in today’s self-serve world is an “oddity,” concedes Bunn, who began operating the courthouse elevator part time in 2008.

The nation’s first automatic elevator was installed in 1950 at Atlantic Refining Co. in Dallas, Texas, according to Stephen Showers, corporate archivist for the world’s largest elevator manufacturer, Otis Elevator Co. in Farmington, Conn. (pop. 23,641).

The system was called the Autotronic Elevator, which was short for auto and electronic and was advertised as “without attendant” or “operatorless,” Showers says. By the 1960s, automatic elevators were commonplace and manual operators were becoming obsolete.

While modern push-button elevators are quick and efficient, they lack the personal touch of Bunn, who greets courthouse employees by name and says the best part of her job is meeting people.

“There are so many nice people,” she says. “Even the prisoners will speak and tell me to have a good day.”

Her passengers range from shackled and somber county jail inmates to happy hand-holding couples with freshly inked marriage licenses, as well as tourists traveling through town on Route 66. Older folks on tour buses and schoolchildren on field trips also line up for rides.

“Some kids are happy on the way up and cry all the way down,” says Bunn, noting that individuals have different reactions to the 30-second rides.

Though the elevator is furnished with a small desk and a chair, Bunn seldom sits. When she’s not transporting passengers, she’s on the first floor greeting people visiting the courthouse.

“Can I help you, ma’am?” Bunn asks when she notices Kathy Baxter, 55, of Greenfield, Mo. (pop. 1,358), an obvious newcomer to the building.

“I need to take care of this traffic

This summary does not take the place of talking to your

healthcare provider about your medical condition or

treatment. See full Prescribing Information for complete

product information.

What is the most important information I should know about ADVAIR DISKUS?

ADVAIR DISKUS can cause serious side effects, including:

1. People with asthma who take long-acting beta2-

adrenergic agonist (LABA) medicines, such as

salmeterol (one of the medicines in ADVAIR DISKUS),

have an increased risk of death from asthma

problems. It is not known whether fl uticasone propionate,

the other medicine in ADVAIR DISKUS, reduces the risk of

death from asthma problems seen with salmeterol.

• Call your healthcare provider if breathing problems

worsen over time while using ADVAIR DISKUS. You

may need different treatment.

• Get emergency medical care if:

- breathing problems worsen quickly and

- you use your rescue inhaler medicine, but it does not

relieve your breathing problems.

2. ADVAIR DISKUS should be used only if your healthcare

provider decides that your asthma is not well controlled

with a long-term asthma control medicine, such as

inhaled corticosteroids.

3. When your asthma is well controlled, your healthcare

provider may tell you to stop taking ADVAIR DISKUS. Your

healthcare provider will decide if you can stop ADVAIR

DISKUS without loss of asthma control. Your healthcare

provider may prescribe a different asthma control

medicine for you, such as an inhaled corticosteroid.

4. Children and adolescents who take LABA medicines may

have an increased risk of being hospitalized for asthma

problems.

What is ADVAIR DISKUS?

• ADVAIR DISKUS combines an inhaled corticosteroid

medicine, fl uticasone propionate (the same medicine

found in FLOVENT®), and a LABA medicine, salmeterol

(the same medicine found in SEREVENT®).

- Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease infl ammation in

the lungs. Infl ammation in the lungs can lead to asthma

symptoms.

- LABA medicines are used in people with asthma and

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). LABA

medicines help the muscles around the airways in your

lungs stay relaxed to prevent symptoms, such as wheezing

and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen

when the muscles around the airways tighten. This makes

it hard to breathe. In severe cases, wheezing can stop your

breathing and cause death if not treated right away.

• ADVAIR DISKUS is used for asthma and COPD as follows:

Asthma

ADVAIR DISKUS is used to control symptoms of asthma

and to prevent symptoms such as wheezing in adults and

children aged 4 years and older.

ADVAIR DISKUS contains salmeterol (the same medicine

found in SEREVENT). LABA medicines, such as salmeterol,

increase the risk of death from asthma problems.

ADVAIR DISKUS is not for adults and children with asthma who:

- are well controlled with another asthma control

medicine, such as a low to medium dose of an

inhaled corticosteroid medicine

- have sudden asthma symptoms.

COPD

COPD is a chronic lung disease that includes chronic

bronchitis, emphysema, or both. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 is

used long term, 2 times each day to help improve lung function

for better breathing in adults with COPD. ADVAIR DISKUS

250/50 has been shown to decrease the number of fl are-ups

and worsening of COPD symptoms (exacerbations).

Who should not use ADVAIR DISKUS?

Do not use ADVAIR DISKUS:

• to treat sudden, severe symptoms of asthma or COPD

• if you have a severe allergy to milk proteins. Ask your

doctor if you are not sure.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using ADVAIR DISKUS?

Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health

conditions, including if you:

• have heart problems • have high blood pressure

• have seizures • have thyroid problems

• have diabetes • have liver problems

• have osteoporosis

• have an immune system problem

• are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not

known if ADVAIR DISKUS may harm your unborn baby.

• are breastfeeding. It is not known if ADVAIR DISKUS

passes into your milk and if it can harm your baby.

• are allergic to any of the ingredients in ADVAIR

DISKUS, any other medicines, or food products

• are exposed to chickenpox or measles

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you

take including prescription and non-prescription medicines,

vitamins, and herbal supplements. ADVAIR DISKUS and

certain other medicines may interact with each other.

This may cause serious side effects. Especially, tell your

healthcare provider if you take ritonavir. The anti-HIV

medicines NORVIR® (ritonavir capsules) Soft Gelatin,

NORVIR (ritonavir oral solution), and KALETRA® (lopinavir/

ritonavir) Tablets contain ritonavir.

Know the medicines you take. Keep a list and show it

to your healthcare provider and pharmacist each time you

get a new medicine.

How do I use ADVAIR DISKUS?

Do not use ADVAIR DISKUS unless your healthcare

provider has taught you and you understand everything.

Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have

any questions.

• Children should use ADVAIR DISKUS with an adult’s help,

as instructed by the child’s healthcare provider.

• Use ADVAIR DISKUS exactly as prescribed. Do not use

ADVAIR DISKUS more often than prescribed. ADVAIR

DISKUS comes in 3 strengths. Your healthcare provider

has prescribed the one that is best for your condition.

• The usual dosage of ADVAIR DISKUS is 1 inhalation

2 times each day (morning and evening). The 2 doses

should be about 12 hours apart. Rinse your mouth with

water after using ADVAIR DISKUS.

• If you take more ADVAIR DISKUS than your doctor has

prescribed, get medical help right away if you have any

unusual symptoms, such as worsening shortness of

breath, chest pain, increased heart rate, or shakiness.

• If you miss a dose of ADVAIR DISKUS, just skip that dose.

Take your next dose at your usual time. Do not take 2

doses at one time.

• Do not use a spacer device with ADVAIR DISKUS.

• Do not breathe into ADVAIR DISKUS.

• While you are using ADVAIR DISKUS 2 times each day,

do not use other medicines that contain a LABA for

any reason. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if

any of your other medicines are LABA medicines.

• Do not stop using ADVAIR DISKUS or other asthma

medicines unless told to do so by your healthcare provider

because your symptoms might get worse. Your healthcare

provider will change your medicines as needed.

• ADVAIR DISKUS does not relieve sudden symptoms.

Always have a rescue inhaler medicine with you to treat

sudden symptoms. If you do not have an inhaled, short-

acting bronchodilator, call your healthcare provider to have

one prescribed for you.

Call your healthcare provider or get medical care right away if:

• your breathing problems worsen with ADVAIR DISKUS

• you need to use your rescue inhaler medicine more often

than usual

• your rescue inhaler medicine does not work as well for you

at relieving symptoms

• you need to use 4 or more inhalations of your rescue

inhaler medicine for 2 or more days in a row

• you use 1 whole canister of your rescue inhaler medicine

in 8 weeks’ time

• your peak fl ow meter results decrease. Your healthcare

provider will tell you the numbers that are right for you.

• you have asthma and your symptoms do not improve after

using ADVAIR DISKUS regularly for 1 week

What are the possible side effects with ADVAIR DISKUS?

• ADVAIR DISKUS can cause serious side effects,

including:

• See “What is the most important information I should

know about ADVAIR DISKUS?”

• serious allergic reactions. Call your healthcare provider

or get emergency medical care if you get any of the

following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:

Choosing a ‘Green’ Paint

HOME

By Stephanie Vozza

When choosing paint, you’re typically concerned with color and finish. But what about VOC levels?

VOCs—volatile organic compounds—are chemicals emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids, including paint. They may have short-term and long-term adverse health effects.

“We used to think that new paint smell was a good thing,” says Shannon Kaye, host of the DIY Network program Fresh Coat. “Now we know that toxins are in odors as much as in things we taste and touch.”

VOCs may cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, and kidney, liver and nervous system damage, as well as cancer, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Today, in response to environmental regulations and consumer demand, manufacturers offer paints with reduced VOC levels, which are safer for people and the environment. To compare brands, check the label for the VOC level. The lower the number, the lower the health risk.

According to current standards, paint with less than 5 grams per liter is considered “zero VOC.” Flat-finish paint with 50 grams per liter or less, and nonflat paint with 100 or less, can receive a “low VOC” certification from Green Seal, a nonprofit organization that regulates and endorses environmentally friendly paint products. Adding tint to paint may increase the VOCs.

“Families don’t realize that what they put on their walls can release chemicals for weeks and even months after the paint dries,” says Kimberly Button, a healthy-home consultant in Orlando, Fla. “No-VOC paints are a healthier alternative, because the amounts of chemicals are much lower.” ★

It’s amazing how technology has changed the way we live. Since the end of the Second World War, more products have been invented than in all of recorded history. After WWII came the invention of the microwave oven, the pocket calculator, and the first wearable hearing aid. While the first two have gotten smaller and more affordable, hearing aids haven’tchanged much. Now there’s an alternative… Neutronic Ear.

First of all, Neutronic Ear is not a hearingaid; it is a PSAP, or Personal Sound Amplification Product. Until PSAPs, everyone was required to see the doctor, have hearing tests, havefitting appointments(numerous visits) andthen pay for the instruments without any insurance coverage. These devices can cost up to $5000 each! The high cost and inconvenience drove aninnovative scientist todevelop the NeutronicEar PSAP.

Neutronic Ear has been designed with thefinest micro-digital electronic componentsavailable to offer superb performance and years of use. Many years of engineeringand development have created a productthat’s ready to use right out of the box. The patented case design and unique cleartube make it practical and easy to use. The entire unit weighs only 1/10th of an ounce, and it hides comfortably behind either ear. The tube is designed to deliver clear crisp sound while leaving the ear canal open. The electronic components are safe from moisture and wax buildup, and you won’t feel like you have a circus peanut jammed in your ear.

Thanks to a state-of-the-art manufacturingprocess and superior design, we can makeNeutronic Ear affordable and pass the savings on to you.

It works… but don’t take our word for it.Why pay thousands to make everythingsound louder when what you really need is aPersonal Sound Amplification Product? We’re so sure you’ll be absolutely thrilledwith the quality and effectiveness of this product that we are offering it to the publicat a low introductory price with our

exclusive trial offer. If, for any reason, you arenot completely amazed by how this productimproves your life, simply return it for arefund of the product purchase price within30 days. Call now.
