Reading: The First Woman in Space

10.-Read the passage. Then answer the questions below.

The First Woman in SpaceThe first woman in space was a Soviet cosmonaut. (The English word for “cosmonaut” is “astronaut.”) In June, 1963, Valentina Tereshkova went around the Earth in a space capsule 48 times in three days. She became a “Hero of the Soviet Union” and received many honors.

Valentina was a factory worker before she became an astronaut. She also knew a lot about parachutes because her hobby was parachute jumping.

She wanted to be an astronaut and wrote to her government about this. Her government chose her to become an astronaut. Then she received many years of training for the flight.

She married another astronaut, Andrian Nikalayev. He traveled in space too. They have a daughter Elena, a doctor.

Valentina never flew in space again. After her flight, she studied engineering and in 1976 received a degree in technical science.

Italian sausage, peeled & chunked1 fryer chicken, cut up & skinnedSalt, pepper, paprika & flour1 clove garlic, minced1 c. long grain rice1/4 tsp. turmeric3 lg. carrots, peeled & sliced1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen peas1 med. onion, chopped1 sm. green pepper, chunked2 tsp. chicken bouillon granules3 1/2 c. hot water1 tomato, sliced

Brown sausage in roaster or very large skillet and remove. Season chicken with salt, pepper, paprika and coat with flour. Brown chicken in sausage drippings.

Remove chicken and discard all but 1 tablespoon fat. Cook onion, garlic and pepper until tender in drippings. Stir in uncooked rice, bouillon granules, turmeric and water; boil. Stir in sausage and carrots and arrange chicken on top.Reduce heat, cover and simmer 20 minutes. Rinse peas and sprinkle on top. Cover and cook 15-20 minutes until rice is tender. Top with tomato slices and heat through. Serves 5-6.

Pastry (frozen) Defreeze before use.

- 2 cups mashed cooked pumpkin- 1 2/3 cup milk (evaporated)- 2 eggs- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar- 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg- 1 1/2 teasponns ground cinnamon- 1/2 teaspoon salt- 1/4 cup whipping cream

1. Prepare pastry for 1 crust pie, line 9 inch pie plate. Set aside.2. Preheat oven to 400ºF. In large bowl, beat pumpkin with all ingredients except cream.3. Pour pumpkin mixture on pastry lined plate.4. Bake pie 40 min. (or until knofe inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean.5. Cool pie on wire rack about 1 1/2 hours.6. Beat cream until stiff peaks form. use to garnish pie.

FLOUR TORTILLAS Favorite!3/4 to 7/8 c. hot water4 c. Flour 1 tsp. salt1/2 c. shortening 1 tsp. baking powderCombine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add hot water to make a stiff dough. Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll into 1-inch balls. Roll each ball into a 5-6 inch circle. Place each circle on a hot griddle and cook for 30 seconds; turn and cook 45 seconds; turn and cook for 30 more seconds. Keep cooked tortillas warm and covered as you finish cooking the remainder of the dough.

REFRIED BEANS1 c. Pinto Beans or canned pinto beans and skip 1 2 and 3.2 cloves garlicLard (oil or shortening)

1. Clean and wash beans.2. Soak for a minimum of 2 hours and no more than 24.Rinse well.3. Cook beans in garlic and water until very tender.Drain.

4. In a hot skillet, add lard, and add mashed beans.(Canbe mashed in the skillet with the hot oil)5. Fry until water is cooked out.If still soupy add a little corn starch or flour tothicken or just keep cooking..

Corn Tortillas is what you want. Go to the grocery store and buy a bag of Masa Harina and follow the directions on the bag. OR just buy some corn tortillas.

There are two ways to make the tacos you speak of. This sounds like what you want.

Let the tortillas sit out individually on your counter to let them dry and get a little hard. This will cut out the splatter when you put them in the hot oil.In a small skillet put no more than a 1/4 inch of oil. Bring to temperature. Carefully put a tortilla in the hot oil for 20-30 seconds per side. Remove from the oil and put your ingredients in while still warm and plyable. When they cool to eating temperature the tortilla will be crisp.

The Mexican vendors use shredded meat, rolled up in a tortilla, stick a tooth pick in it to hold it together. Cook in hot oil as before. Remove and serve with Pico de Gallo.
