If spam settings for email accounts
need to be changed, the settings
can be modified at
https://mg.uky.edu/ . When the
settings are set to high, then valid
emails can be marked as “Spam”.
Setting the options to a low spam
setting will result in spam not
being marked as “Spam”. Once
spam settings are set, Outlook can
be configured to move or delete
emails marked as “Spam”.

TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALLING INSTRUCTIONS ON STANDARD CAMPUS TELEPHONES
The following are instructions for generating a telephone conference
call between 3 people:
1. Ask the first person to remain on the line.
2. Tap the button in the receiver cradle.
3. Dial the person you wish to connect to.
4. When they receive the call, tell them you wish to create a
conference call.
5. Tap the button in the receiver cradle to connect both parties.
Instructions for making a 4 to 6 way conference call through a phone
station are as follows:
1. Lift the handset, and dial * 5 1 (Listen for tone)
2. Dial the number of the first party, and indicate that you are connecting additional people for a
conference call.
3. Tap the button in the phones receiver cradle.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until everyone is connected, and tap the button in the receiver cradle
twice to talk with the party.

OFFICE COMMUNICATIONS SERVER (OCS)
The University of Kentucky currently Microsoft Office Site License
now includes Office Communications Server (OCS). This software
facilitates communications by using chat, audio, application
sharing, and video capabilities in a streamlined interface. With
OCS, several options are available, as the following:
• Students can attend class virtually seeing other
students and the teacher using web cams/microphones.
• Guest lecturers are able to make presentations from their
office.
• Teachers could have one-on-one personal consultations
with students from their office.
OCS is available for Windows, Macs, Pocket PC’S, Smart Phones,
and iPhone. More information about the OCS is available through

Several hoax emails have been received in the department this month. Some of the following are some

sender wishes you to open a link or attachment.

APPLE IPAD
For those interested in getting a look at the Apple Ipad, the devices are available at the UK University
Bookstore, and at Best Buy in Lexington, Ky. The Young Library is using iPad’s in test environments to
test their usefulness in the library system. Because of the growth of the iPhone adoption rate, use of
the iPad is expected to grow substantially.

4G WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS
Cell phones are entering a new era of increased internet access
speed by jumping from 3G internet access (600 kbps) to 4G internet
access (6 mbps or 10 x 3G speed ) that is currently offered by Sprint,
and potentially soon opened to other phone vendors. Currently, the
Sprint HTC Evo 4G incorporates 4G technology. The Apple iPhone to
be offered later this year is purported to include 4G access with
tethering capabilities.

FBI REQUESTING DATA RETENTION
The FBI has asked internet service providers to keep locations surfed by computers to conduct criminal
investigations. Since 1986, the FBI has required telephone companies to keep records of name, address
and telephone number of the caller, telephone number called, date, time, and length of the call.

FREE CD/DVD BURNING SOFTWARE
When reloading computers with software, often it becomes hard to find all
the cd’s that came with a computer. An example of a piece of software that
is often not found is the CD and DVD burning software. The following
software are free utilities that can be used to burn CD and DVD’s with
computers having a CD or DVD burner installed:

making web information interactive, and includes the

Google Goggles allows phones with the Android operating
system to use the web to determine

• Compare text out of a book to a library of contents,

WIRELESS PROTOCOLS COMPETE WITH ETHERNET
802.11ac and 802.11ad protocols allow maximum network speeds of
600 mbps to 1 gbps, and a normal rate of 300 mbps to 400 mbps.
Although these standards haven’t been ratified, they would allow high
quality streaming video content to be shared over the internet, and are
expected to become available over the next few years.
