Night at Thirsty’s Oasis

Saturday, Jan. 26

Congratulations to Kings High School Senior Nick Collado on being named a

finalist for the “That’s My Boy” award sponsored by the National Football

Federation. Nick is a running back for the Kings Knights Football Team. This

is one of the most prestigious awards in all of Ohio sports!

Nick’s athletic and academic accomplishments have made him the lone rep-

resentative from the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, said Knights Coach

Andy Olds.

Congratulations also go out to Kennedy Cook on being

selected as the 2013 Anthony Munoz Foundation Offensive Lineman of the

Year for Division 2 in Ohio. The award recognizes top Linemen in the tri-

state region for their successes on and off the playing field. Keeping with the

mission of the Foundation, division winner must have shown a level of aca-

demic success and community involvement as well. Nick and Kennedy will

be honored at a black-tie banquet February 28, at the Westin Cincinnati.

The Kings Local School District’s Kokorodza Marimba Ensemble will once again

perform at the Cincinnati Museum Center’s “African Culture Fest” this week-

end. They will perform in the Patricia A. Corbett Children’s Theater on Sunday,

Jan. 20, beginning at noon. Following their noon performance, they will present a

short workshop teaching some young audience members to play a marimba

tune. The workshop will be followed by another performance by the marimba

ensemble.

That morning at 9 a.m. (Sunday, Jan. 20), the Kokorodza Marimba Ensemble will

be featured on FOX19 for a segment about the African Culture Fest.

Quiz Bowl

Some teachers at Kings Junior High want-

ed a better way for students to review

previously learned material. Something

that would be fun and engaging.

So team leaders Brent Allen, Mike San

Marco, Erik Poggi, and Matt Knott came

up with the idea of Quiz Bowl. Organized

much like a game show, Quiz Bowl takes

nine teams of three students each and

matches them up in a battle of

knowledge. Students are asked questions

about math, science, language arts, history, and social studies.

Thanks to a grant from the Great Cincinnati Foundation, KJH was able

to purchase a wireless buzzer system for this game. After a question

was read students buzzed in. The team with the fastest buzzer and

correct answer scored a point. Each KJH Team (White, Red, and Blue)

had three competitive teams (A, B, and

C).

At the end of the first match the White

Team emerged victorious. This was based

on the combined score of the White

Team’s three competitive teams. The

team of Ethan Cain, Julianna Powers, and

Jonathan Moster (8 Blue) were the overall

champions.

“This was a first attempt, but it went

amazingly well,” Mr. Allen said. They are

already brainstorming ways to make it

better. The plans are to host four Quiz Bowls each year.

“The students were very excited to participate and the audience had

tracking sheets so they could follow along,” Mr. Allen said.

This will certainly become a new tradition at KJH.

Sharing an Interest

Students in Diane Wallace’s class at J.F. Burns Elemen-tary are authors.

They researched a topic of interest, then wrote a book full of facts and illus-trations.

The students’ inter-ests were varied.

They wrote about the Titanic, the Civil War, dogs, myth-ological creatures, famous landmarks, singers, animals, and more.

When the project was finished students shared their sto-ries with students in Wendy Flynn’s third grade class.

“Sticks Up” Indoor Lacrosse Clinic

Kings Education Center (old KME Gymnasium)

Presented by Kings Men’s Lacrosse

Especially designed for Kings Youth Players, Grades 2-6

Registration Deadline Monday, Jan. 21

This three hour clinic is designed for players of all experience levels. Players will be grouped by experi-

ence level and taken through a series of dynamic Lacrosse Drills, physical conditioning challenges,

and “chalk talks.” The day includes some friendly competition complete with prizes. This preseason

event is being coordinated by the Men’s HS Lacrosse Program and will feature Ron Cheek, Men’s Var-

sity Head Coach and his coaching staff along with several of the Kings HS Varsity Players.

Recycled Paper

“So why recycle paper when you can just grow more trees?” Susan

Geisler asked a Deb Monroe’s 2nd grade class at South Lebanon Ele-

mentary. “Because our landfills are filling up and if we recycle paper

that saves space in the landfills. It also takes less energy to recycle

paper than it does to make new paper.”

Suzanne, environmental educator with the Warren County Water

and Sewer District, was at SLE Friday, Jan. 11, to help students make

recycled paper.

Using water, paper, and a blender Mrs. Geisler made pulp. Zak

Burress, pictured, said he really liked this project. He predicted that

his paper would look like the earth, and he was right!

All this month students in Kelly Shields’ Digital Media Arts class at Kings

El Dia De Los Reyes Magos

During the first week back from winter break students in

Rhonda Allen-Harman’s Spanish III class at Kings High School

learned about El dia de los reyes magos, or Three Kings Day.

This is a holiday celebrated in many Spanish speaking coun-

tries on January 6. The students wrote letters in Spanish to

the Three Kings. They also baked rosca de reyes (king cake)

to top off the celebration.

Students are applying the processes of science to investigate motion. On Monday, Jan. 14, students were demonstrating that the change in motion of an object is related to the size

of the force applied. They were predicting the distances different objects would move with a small force and larger

force, then applied forces and measured the re-sults. Students were also trying to find out if an object’s

mass had an effect on the distance it moved. Pictured are Adrianna Fuentes and Deslyn Dixon.

KJH Swim Team Sweeps Champion-ships

Congratulations to the Kings Junior High Swim team that swept league championships over the weekend! The boys and girls com-peted against nine other teams in their league to win all

three first place trophies: boys’ division, girls’ division and overall small team division!

First and second place overall finishers included Megan Sichterman and Zack Handorf in the 200 free, Emilee Carlin in the 25 Fly, Corinne Baber in the 50 Free, Zack Handorf in the 500 Free, Megan Sichterman in the 100 Fly, Jordan Cheatham and Kyle Glennon in the 100 Free and Ally Carlin in the 100 Breastroke.

We also had two league records broken by our team! First was the 25 fly a time of 13.31 seconds set in 2005. Our Emilee Carlin broke that record on Saturday swimming a 13.29 seconds! Way to go Emilee! Second was the 100 Fly a time of 1:01.31 set in 1996! Megan Sichterman broke that record on Saturday swimming a 59.42 seconds!!

Kings Kids Preschool—Registration Now Open

Kings Kids has been educating preschoolers from the Kings Local School District for more than 20 years. The Preschool and Preschool Childcare is located in the Kings Educational Center in Kings Mills. Registra-tion for the fall 2013-2014 school year began this month. Applications will be accepted until classes are filled.

Class Offerings include:

3-year-old Preschool—Three day program de-signed for children 3-years old by September 30. Morning and afternoon sessions available.

4-year-old Preschool—Two or three day pro-grams designed for children 4-years old by Sep-tember 30. Morning and afternoon sessions available.

Childcare for Preschoolers—Full time child care is also available for children enrolled in the Pre-school program.

Curriculum is based on the Ohio Early Learning Con-tent Standards for preschool education as well as the philosophy of the Kings Local School District.

This select group of Kings Dance Team girls attended their first competition in more than five years at Seton

High School on Saturday, Jan. 12. They took home first place and scored in the "superior" range while

receiving many positive comments on choreography, execution, and technical ability!

Kings Girls Recreational Fast Pitch Softball

Kings Girls “rec” Softball will have sign-ups Wednesday, Jan. 16, and Wednesday, Jan. 30,

at Columbia Intermediate School (cafeteria) 7-8 p.m. Mail-in registration is also available

Knight to Remember will be here before you know it. This 10th Anniversary event, at the

Great Wolf Lodge Conference Center, is on Saturday, April 13. The evening includes a

cocktail reception, dinner, live entertainment by 2nd Wind, silent and live auctions and a

fabulous basket raffle. Knight to Remember is presented by the Kings Athletic Booster

Club and benefits all junior high and high school athletic programs.

Students Donate to Make A Wish Foundation

Students in Ann Wood’s and Sean Sittason’s classes at Columbia Intermediate School

donated $337.30 to the Make A Wish Foundation this month. They were able to do this

after gathering their profits from last month’s Holiday Sale, a tradition at CIS.

For the past several years teacher Ann Wood and Sean Sittason have used this holiday

sale as a way to teach math and economics.

While working in teams, students design an inexpensive product that can easily be made

and sold to other students. The teams had to compute the cost of the product, set the

price to make a profit, decide what quantity to sell, do some advertising and write a per-

suasive speech to sway students to buy their product.

At the end of the sale students donate their profits to a charity.
