Con el fin de asegurar que el hipoclorito de sodio –blanqueador para lavanderías, para uso doméstico ó usoindustrial – resultado de la reacción entre cloro y sodacáustica sea de la mejor calidad posible, la reacción debecontrolarse adecuadamente. El punto final de la reacciónes crítico por que – en adición al uso ineficiente de lasmaterias primas – el uso de un hipoclorito que contengaun elevado exceso de soda cáustica disminuye la velocidadde blanqueo. Al contrario, un producto sobre clorado esaltamente inestable y ocasiona normalmente unaliberación de cloro. La manera más precisa de monitorearla reacción es por el potencial de óxido-reducción –comúnmente conocido como ORP ó REDOX – El uso delORP es una forma simple de lograr la mejor eficiencia paraobtener un producto con la máxima estabilidad y unaperfecta velocidad de blanqueo.
El medidor y controlador Powell 2 usa el principio de ORPpara monitorear el exceso de soda cáustica en el sistema.Los electrodos de ORP son colocados inmersos en la líneade producción de Hipoclorito produciendo un voltajeinversamente proporcional a la cantidad de exceso de sodacáustica en la solución. Los electrodos mostrarán la mismamedida de voltaje si el exceso de soda cáustica es siempreel mismo. Esto permite al fabricante establecer un puntodeterminado sobre el controlador para obtener un productoestable con el mismo exceso de soda cáustica.

El Electrodo ORP Powell ORP ha tenido un buen desempeño
en las industrias del hipoclorito de sodio y cloruro férrico. El
electrodo puede también ser usado con cualquier producto
químico halógeno.
El electrodo Powell para potencial de óxido-reducción (ORP)utiliza platino para el electrodo medidor y plata para el electrodode referencia. Esta unidad ha sido probada en numerosossistemas como la decloración de salmuera y en las industriasde producción y consumo de hipoclorito de sodio y cloruroférrico. Está recomendado para ser usado con cualquierproducto químico halógeno y en absorbedores, tanques deneutralización, chimeneas de escapes y producción por lotes.Los electrodos Powell de ORP están disponibles para tuberíasde tamaños desde 1" hasta 18" y son reconocidos en elmercado por su larga vida útil e impecable desempeño.

Donde Eo es el potencial de oxidación estándar para la reacción.
Dado que el potencial del electrodo es primordialmente una función del ión hidrógeno se observa una inflexión bien definida enel punto final de la reacción similar a la obtenida con las mediciones de pH.
La experiencia ha mostrado que una curva típica de milivoltios en un absorbedor de cloro empieza con una concentración desoda cáustica del 21% que reaccionando con el cloro producirá unas señales en milivoltios respecto al remanente de hidróxidode sodio vs. el porcentaje en peso del hipoclorito de sodio. Los datos se pueden observar en la tabla 1.

De acuerdo a los datos de la tabla 1, el potencial de óxido-reducción puede representarse gráficamente como se muestraen la figura 1. El uso apropiado del electrodo ORP en cualquierabsorbedor de cloro diseñado para procesos continuos ó porlotes, controla los altos niveles requeridos de hidróxido desodio.
Los clientes de Powell han controlado exitosamente los nivelesnormales de hidróxido de sodio tales como del 12% en peso.Muchos clientes prefieren trabajar los absorbedores con nivelesinferiores en la concentración del hidróxido tal como 1.5%,controlando el nivel con el electrodo ORP ya sea para produccionesde procesos continuos ó de lotes.

Si el sistema está automatizado y realiza la adición dehidróxido de sodio por programación, el conjunto con elcontrol del electrodo ORP llevará a que los posiblesdesequilibrios del proceso sean rápidamente controlados.
Un absorbedor de cloro para procesos de producción dehipoclorito de sodio por lotes, utiliza electrodos ORP loscuales suministrarán información y activarán lasalarmas con el fin de informar a los operadores cuandosea necesario realizar la operación de cambio de lote deproducción en los tanques de hipoclorito de sodio.
