Benefits of the electric heating systemTo heat with electricity offers distinct advan-tages over other heating systems:- low purchase price,- low installation cost,- no cost for storing fuel,- no boiler compartment or storage rooms for

oil necessary,- no cost for procurement of fuel,- no chimney necessary, no cost for cleaning

the chimney,- low maintenance cost,- easy retrofit in existing apartments and

houses,- high efficiency also at partial load,- no exhaust gas or smell,- no potential danger by leaking gas or oil.

With the new energy efficient houses, the useof electric heating systems is a viable alternativeto conventional heating systems. The influenceof increased consumption of primary energy atthe power plant and higher cost of electricity isno longer a decisive factor. The greatly improvedinsulation of new buildings has drastically redu-ced the heat requirement. For an apartment with100 m2 a total heating capacity of 6 kW is oftensufficient. This means that during the heatingperiod an average heating capacity of little morethan 2 kW will be needed. This can be achievedeasier with an electric heat source rather thanwith today´s boilers, since their capacity is muchtoo high for these applications.

In addition, conventional heating systemshave losses due to the start of a burner or due topartial load in spring and autumn whereas elec-tric heaters use only energy when it is reallyneeded. Another important incentive for the Elec-tric heater-circulator unit can be given by thevery attractive electricity prices offered by someutility companies for electric heating.

The Electric warm water floor heatingIn contrast to conventional hydronic systemswhere there are always a boiler and radiators,electric floor heating offers two possibilities, thedirect heating and indirect heating with warmwater.

The electric direct heating uses heating wiresplaced into the slab which heat the floor surface.This method however has a distinctive disad-vantage:

Usually such heating wires produce heatindependent from the surrounding temperature.If for instance a part of the floor is very wellinsulated by a plastic foam sofa, a cabinet orboxes, such heating can result in dangerouslyhigh floor temperatures. Such overheating canonly be eliminated by integrating sensors whichdeactivate the heater partially when a set tempe-rature is exceeded.

With electric warm water heating, an electricboiler warms up water which is then circulatedthrough the floor heating system. The water canonly dissipate heat while the floor has not yetreached the water temperature. This systemtherefore has a self regulating effect. As soon asthe floor in an area of the room has reached acertain temperature the temperature differenceto the heat carrier becomes smaller so that inthis area less heat is transferred to the floor. Thisalso applies to areas of the floor which areexposed to direct sun. Since the floor in theseareas has a higher temperature already, lessheat from the heat carrier will be transferred dueto the smaller temperature difference. This is notpossible with direct electric floor heating, sincein this case each part of the floor receives thesame heat input.

A further advantage of the electric warmwater heating is the possibility to change theheat source. As soon as the favorable conditi-ons for electricity are no longer available, theelectric heater can be replaced by an oil or gasboiler. If this possibility is taken into accountwhen the floor heating is designed, the changecan be made with little expense.

For these reasons, the indirect electrical floorheating is always preferable to a direct electricalheating system.

In the design of the Electric heater-circulator unit weused a completely new approach. As the name„Electric heater-circulator“ suggests, the sphericalmotor pump with its whisper quiet operation and theelectrical heater form an integral unit that guaran-tees the most compact and efficient heat source fora hydronic system.

The spherical motor pump conveys the waterthrough the rotor/impeller into the enlarged pumphousing which contains the heating elements thatheat up the water. The swirl created by the impellerimproves the heat transfer from the heating ele-ments.

The heated water exits the unit through thedischarge port situated at the upper part of thehousing. A safety valve and a bleed valve are placedat the highest point of the heater-circulator unit. Apressurized expansion tank is attached to a portnear the inlet port. A safety temperature cutout andan electronic control are placed in the terminal box.This control performs absolutely noiseless swit-ching of the electric heating elements, providesconstant temperature control, shuts the pump offwith a time delay, and offers reliable protectionagainst overheating.

All parts of the Electric heater-circulator thatcome into contact with the heat carrier fluid arecompletely corrosion resistant.

The LAING Spherical MotorThe circulator integrated into the Electric heater-circulator unit has a spherical motor developed byLAING. The spherical motor pumps have provenreliable in decades of successful service.

The only moving part is the rotor/impeller unitthat glides on a ceramic stationary ball suspendedby electromagnetic forces. The rotor/impeller unittilts automatically to allow small dirt particles toflow through. This bearing principle eliminates fro-zen shafts, leaky seals and noisy bearings.The pump therefore stays quiet over its lifetime.

The LAING Electric heater-circulator unit - applications

The LAING Electric heater-circulator units are theleast expensive heating solution. They are suited forsingle family houses as well as for apartments witheither floor heating or radiators. The LAING Electricheater-circulator units are also ideal for room additi-ons which cannot be integrated into the existingheating system or for vacation homes and weekendhomes. A further application is the heating of ba-throom floors in summer, which otherwise wouldrequire operation of the main heating system.

Due to its compactness and its extremely quietoperation the LAING Electric heater-circulator unit

can even be installed in apartments or hallways.Because of its flat design the unit fits inside wall-mounted cabinets so that no separate space isneeded. Room temperature controls as well as outsi-de temperature controls can easily be added to theintegrated noiseless electronic constant temperaturecontrol.

The installation of the LAING Electric heater-circulator requires only the electrical connection andthe connection to the floor heating system or theradiators which results in low material and labor costs.

Electrically heated substations with manifolds - Models EPR SDand EPR XDThese compact units reduce the installation time and expense to aminimum. The units contain all components necessary for electric floorheating or electric radiator heating. They consist of an Electric heater-circulator unit with integrated electronic control, a plastic manifold, aflowmeter for each loop, a pressurized expansion tank, compressionfittings and safety devices. All components are assembled and factorytested for leaks. The units can be delivered in a cabinet or on mountingbracket. All components coming in contact with the liquid are corrosionresistant.

Electrically heated central substation - Model EPR ZThe central unit combines an Electric heater-circulator unit with itselectronically actuated switch Model EPR, a pressurized expansion tank,connection fittings and safety fittings in an extremely compact package.

The central unit should be used when there is not enough space for thecompact unit or when the radiator heating only requires a single loop. Allcomponents coming in contact with the liquid are corrosion resistant andall units are factory tested for leaks.

Electric single room heater with cabinet - Model EH 2 SThe electric heater-circulator unit - Model EH 2 S is assembled into acabinet to be mounted inside a wall. This reduces the installation costsfor a separate single room electric heating to a minimum.

In addition to the electric heater-circulator unit EH, it contains anexpansion tank, a manifold for two loops, and valves for filling. The unit hasbeen factory tested for leaks.

Electric single room heater Model EH 2The Electric heater-circulator unit Model EH is a compact small electric boiler with a heatperformance of up to 2 kW. It is mainly intended for the heating of a single room. This heateris especially suitable for bathroom floor heating during the time of year when the centralheating system is shut off. It is also suited for the heating of room additions or rooms inattics.

The heater contains a heating element of 2000 W output, a quiet LAING sphericalmotor pump, a safety temperature limiter and a constant temperature control. Optionallya timer can be included to run the heating only at certain hours of the day. All componentscoming in contact with the liquid are corrosion resistant.

Electric heater-circulator unit - Model EPRThese LAING Electric heater-circulator units are compact electrically heated boilerswith an integrated circulator pump. Their performance ranges from 6 to 15 kW,sufficient for the space heating of a single family home or an apartment.

Due to their compactness and a depth of only 110 mm they can be mounted insidea wall or placed in a recess. All components are corrosion resistant so that they caneven be used in floor heating systems with plastic hoses which are not oxygen diffusionproof. The use of the LAING spherical motor pump guarantees quiet operation over itslifetime. The integrated electronic control enables noiseless switching of the electricheating elements. A safety temperature limiter protects against overheating.

DescriptionThe Electric heater-circulator unit contains 3 heatingelements, a LAING spherical motor pump, a safetytemperature limiter, an integrated electronic control, asafety valve, a pressure gauge, and a thermometer. Allcomponents are combined into a compact unit.

The integrated electronic control has the followingfunctions:- Electronic, absolutely noiseless solid state relays

for each electric heating element.- Electronic fixed temperature control.- The three heating elements can be activated

either simultaneously, staged over time, stagedby temperature or by the temperature gradient.

- Overheating protection for the solid state relays.- Switch selectable delayed pump shutoff. If this

function is activated, the pump will run as long asthe heater is switched on and stay on for twoadditional minutes after the heating is turned off toremove the residual heat of the heating elements.

- Electronic dry fire protection of the heating ele-ments.

- Remote control input. The Electric heater-circula-tor unit can be activated by remote control. A roomthermostat or an outside temperature dependentcontrol can be connected to this input.

- The second and third heating element can becontrolled by an external source.

- Electronic pump run test. If for any reason thepump does not work, the heating elements will notbe activated.

- „Malfunction“ output. In case of any malfunction, acontact will be closed which can be connected toan external control system.

- Main switch. The main switch turns off the heateras well as the pump.

Customer requests for a unit that combines allcomponents necessary for electrical heating led tothe development of the electrically heated substati-on with manifolds. Installation of this unit requiresonly the mounting of the unit to the wall or into arecess and the connection of the pipes and electri-cal supply.

With a minimal depth of only 112 mm the LAINGsubstation can be placed inside almost any wall.Due to the adjustability of the cabinet the unit canbe adapted to practically all conditions of installati-on.

InstallationDue to the compactness and the quiet operation ofthe LAING substation it is possible to install the unitin the same place where normally the heating circuitmanifold is placed. This means that the pipingconnections and installation cost are reduced to aminimum.

The easiest solution is the use of the steelcabinet which contains all components and whichcan be easily built into a wall. The only visible partswill be the frame and the door, both of which aregalvanized and can be painted. This makes it pos-sible to adapt the visible parts of the substation tothe surrounding wall.

If the unit is to be mounted inside an existingcabinet or recess, the substation on mounting brak-kets can be used. In this case, the unit is attachedto the wall with the mounting brackets. If desired,the unit can be covered up after installation.

The components of the systemThe LAING Electrically heated substation with ma-nifolds contains the following components:

Pressurized Expansion tankAll expansion tanks used in the LAING units arecorrosion resistant.

The standard model of the substation is equip-ped with a 6 liter membrane expansion tank. Uponrequest, the unit can be equipped with an openstainless steel expansion tank.

Manifold with flowmeterAll LAING substations are supplied with plasticmanifolds. The manifolds are assembled from indi-vidual segments so that even after installation thenumber of loops can be increased or decreased. Themanifolds are equipped with a flowmeter for eachloop. This makes it easy to adjust the individualloops without having to consider the valve characte-ristics.

The viewing glass of the flowmeter is filled with wateronly at startup. Since the fluid exchange thereafteris restricted, the glass remains transparent evenafter prolonged use.Due to the double walled design of the manifolds the

heat transfer to the cabinet is minimized. All LAINGsubstations are delivered complete with compressi-on fittings. The required size of the fittings needs tobe indicated on the order.

Filling valveTo facilitate the filling, the substation has a checkvalve built into the feed side. During the filling thisvalve is closed so that the water flows through theloops and not through the heater-circulator unit. Thecheck valve replaces manual shut-off valves foundon conventional manifolds.

CabinetThe cabinet of the substation for installation insidea wall is made of solid steel. The frame consists ofhot galvanized sheet metal, the walls of the cabinetand the door are made from galvanized sheet metal.The depth of the cabinet can be adjusted from 112to 177 mm, its height from 1000 to 1070 mm.Depending on the number of loops, the width of thecabinet is either 1000 or 1330 mm. The mountingrails allow for horizontal and vertical adjustment ofthe substation inside the cabinet. Cabinets forinstallation on the wall are available upon request.

Mounting bracketsThe mounting bracket for substations without cabi-net consist of a solid structure of metal rails. Therails will be attached to the wall. The substationthen can be adjusted by sliding it on the rails. Fortransportation, the rails are mounted on a woodenboard which has to be removed before installation.

The use of the central substation is preferable whene-ver there is not enough room for a substation withmanifolds or when the radiator heating is done in asingle loop.

The central substation can be installed in the utility roomor, because of its whisper-quiet operation, even in theliving quarters. Due to its compact size the centralsubstation can be placed in a small recess.

DescriptionThe electric heater Model EH 2 consists of an electri-cal heater, a LAING spherical motor pump and anelectric control. The whisper-quiet spherical motorpump draws water from the return side and pumps thewater past the electric heating elements to the feedside.

The Electric heater-circulator unit contains a safe-ty temperature limiter as well as an integrated con-stant temperature thermostat. Optionally an integra-ted timer with daily or weekly programming is available.

All parts of the Electric heater-circulator unit co-ming into contact with the liquid are corrosion resi-stant so that the unit can be used for domestic hotwater as well as in heating loops.

ApplicationsDue to its compact design (depth only 80 mm), itsquiet operation and the integrated controls, the Elec-tric heater-circulator unit EH 2 can be used for singleroom heating without any problems.

DescriptionThe electric single room heater with cabinet EH 2 Sconsists of an Electric heater-circulator unit EH 2 withan electric heating capacity of 2 kW, feed and returnline manifolds for two loops, filling and draining fittingsand a pressureless expansion tank with fill heightindicator. All components are assembled in a galvani-zed steel cabinet for mounting inside a wall.

The pressureless expansion tank ensures optimalair purging for the whole system and renders thesafety valve and pressure gauge unnecessary.

The completely assembled unit reduces the instal-lation expense to a minimum. The unit can be placedinside a recess and requires only the electrical andpipe connections.

ApplicationsThe single room heater with cabinet EH 2 S isapplicable wherever heating independent from a cen-tral heating system is required. Such applicationsneed a separate expansion tank.

Due to its compact design the unit can be placedalmost anywhere without a problem. Attention mustbe paid to the fact that the unit has to be placed abovethe heating loops due to the pressureless expansiontank. It is even possible to place the unit inside an 110mm thick wall.

Due to the whisper-quiet operation of the sphericalmotor pump, the unit can be installed inside rooms.The integrated control elements allow the room tem-perature to be controlled with just an additional roomthermostat such as our RT or RTU.
